In Drunken Concubine Dimash and Li Yu Gang, present us by way of dialogue, the tragic love story between a famous Concubine (represented by Li Yu Gang) of the Chinese imperial court and the emperor (represented by Dimash) for that reason the two thrones in the stage. The Concubine dies poisoned as a result of the intrigues of enemies in the imperial court. The emperor is sentencing the Concubine to death (the vocal fry part)The Concubine reminds the Emperor of happy times together but does not change the outcome, the death of the Concubine.

Novadays vocal coaches are watching Dimash a lot and all they say is "wow he is a great singer, omg how did he do that, ow he can't be human" etc.. But you sir you explain everything. I mean literally eveything note by note and I consider this is a fantastic thing because in my opinion Dimash is like a school but you can't learn anything without a guider so you become that guider and help people to understand how he does what he does. People might get bored because you stop the song a lot but hey if they want to listen the song then they should open the song and listen it do not watch analysis about it.

Li Yugang (sings with Dimash) soloist of the traditional Beijing Opera - where the classical Chinese repertoire is performed, performs female roles - sings a popular song using traditional Chinese opera technique (where the airflow is directed - compressed - mainly through the back walls of the nasal passage - hence this effect). Your comments about Li's singing are not very accurate because you simply lack the knowledge of this technique. And Dimash just sings clasically staccato using a head voice (like a soprano) and not the pectoral register of what you're trying to show. I am not thrilled with your comments today.
The song is a quarrel of a drunk concubine with the master (Diva Dance in the middle - with Dimash's whistle, which cuts the whole quarrel) and ends with reconciliation.
A very nice performance. Two classical singing traditions (Chinese and European) are wonderfully mixed. I'm not sure, but I think this is Cantonese Chinese, not Mandarin.

@@frankamador9962 Thanks for kind words. Yes, this performance is great. Dimash has a few more that he did after The Singer, where different singing techniques are combined. It's fantastic how the Chinese feel, how open-minded they are, not only experimenting, but also making a great show of it. In general, in the East (e.g. also in Mongolia) there is definitely more combining techniques, tradition and experiment than in the West, which eats its own tail.

I got confused in my first hearing of it too, however I was hypnotized and could understand that there was much likely a very symbolic cultural feature behind it. After some research I found out more about the backstory of the performance (even the vocal-fry has a meaning) and traditional male-only Peking Opera and how males are assigned female roles. It's a very peculiar kind of singing that even though "scares" western ears at first, fits SO incredibly well with this crazy production. The mix of traditional European Opera singing technique and traditional Chinese Opera technique over a bed of electro-pop is mindblowing. It's something really new for all of us. In terms of production this reaches more of a "Bjorkish melting pot" level, which I'm crazy for. Damn... Dimash is unbelievable. I'd never research about Chinese Opera and Li Yugang if it wasn't for him. This man is a vocal encyclopedia and musical messiah. Lol

There’s a music video on TH-cam of li Yugang doing this song and in full Chinese opera female makeup, it’s pretty cool. It has this sort of rock sound fused with the traditional Chinese opera sound.

Not only Dimash is smashing it, but with the Dimash marathon you’re smashing it too. Thank you🙏his singing partner Li Yugang is a pro and performing at the Chinese Being opera (singing and performing in a women voice called Nan dan). They performing in fact a play by singing it, Dimash is the king and Li is the Concubine.

Li Yugang, the Chinese gentleman with Dimash, sings so called nan dan roles, the female ones. I have had the pleasure of hearing Peking opera twice live and it is not something that can be put into words. Even if it is not your cup of tea, I highly advise you to go if you have the chance. It is a magnificent production and the different style, techniques and concepts would I think be highly enjoyable anyway to a professional like you. It is a very different culture but absolutely beautiful; unfortunately we don't have enough opportunities to see it. If you can some day, go! Thank you so much 💞

The man who Dimash is singing with, Li Yugang (plays female roles at Peking Opera), it is his song. I think Dimash may be singing subtly at first to match Yugang's singing if that makes sense. If you take a look at Yugang's video for this song called Shin Gui Fei Zui Jiu, its worth the watch. Also, I find it so funny that someone would argue with you about whether Dimash is a tenor or a baritone.😂 I love all your stuff but I'm really loving Dimash week!💕 I tried the challenge to sing from my chest voice to my head voice, and I'm sure now I have only one octave.🙄I'm not sure if you have all your songs chosen yet for Dimash week but his live performance of Know at one of Igor Krutoy's gala's is one of my favorites. This is a very old Chinese folk song. Background of this composition is very sad. Dimash sings the role of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, who sentenced his beloved Concubine Yang Guifei to death for treason. That's why Dimash growls so hard in the first part. Then she reminds how she was besotted with him and asks why there's only one step between love and hate. Insanely romantic lyrics. Li Yugang (born 1978) Chinese singer, composer and producer in the Peking Opera. Here he sings in the traditional Huadan style when a male singers play a female roles in Chinese opera. That's an allusion to The Drunken Concubine in Peking Opera. Very interesting performance. Thanks a lot for your great vocal analys ☺️☺️ There is also a wonderful duet: Dimash & Tengri " Swan Goose".

Excellent analysis. I fully agree with your findings. Dimash's head voice is better controlled. Dimash sings more comfortably. His head voice is better supported because he connects the diaphragm. Lee Yugang directs the sound into the head resonators and cannot force his voice as much as possible without support, and because of this, flexibility and dexterity in high notes is lost, he has to turn down the volume to maneuver in vocalizations. The main tone of the voice is formed in chest resonators, and it is impossible to be able to saturate with overtones without good support, therefore Li Yugang's tone has a light timbre color. Dimash is a multi-tenor 😂 .

I agree Dimash is naturally baritone as his voice matured you can hear the lower range expand I believe guys voices don't usually finish maturing until around early thirties and Dimash is turning 28 this month in May 2022. Many times I just say he is base, baritone, tenor, alto, counter tenor, saprano, whistle and Dolphin 🐬 😂
The beginning with a light speaking voice is Li YuGang's arrangement of a Peking Opera classic, to make it Chinese version of neoclassical. As like Bel Canto, young people don't listen to Chinese Opera anymore so Li YuGang wants to make it fresh. Just the same way Dimash likes to mix styles with his classical training European Opera. Li Yugang cannot also escape his training since they start training Chinese Opera very young...so he innovates. It's very cool I think

This was a fabulous tutorial, Ken. I'm not a singer, only a lifelong vocal enthusiast and huge admirer of Dimash. Even though I've watched this performance dozens of times, I learned more about it from you today. I especially enjoyed your demonstration of agility practice technique, wonderful! I wish the video had been a little longer because you were only able to make brief mention at the end that you could hear Dimash's true, raw voice without the delay and effects. I would have loved more analysis of that and what you were able to hear in that part. As for the fach discussion, I know that a person's normal speaking voice isn't a reliable indication. But I've always been interested in how Dimash, both in interviews and in conversation with the audience during his concerts, sometimes speaks in a tenor voice, and sometimes speaks in a baritone voice. Both of his speaking voices sound completely natural, though quite different. Is the switch between speaking voices a deliberate choice, or is it an indication of recent vocal practice spent in certain registers?
As crazy as it may sound, I actually think that his talking voices are just another sample of the duality of his Gemini nature... the same way he can look sometimes like a teenager of 15 yrs old and other times like mature man of 40. It's not just the change in his hairdress/clothing what produces the big change in his looks; sometimes he even seems a different person. Why would be different with his talking voice?

Yes, I tried it myself. I have a register break singing that low note into my head voice. Dimash has no register breaks anywhere. I mean it in the best possible way: Dimash is a freak of nature!

I am so falling for Dimash's voice!!! Thank you for the breakdown! Tried your exercises from this video a bit and I actually surprised myself a bit. Goes to show what can happen with the right guidance. Not saying that it's some sort of improvement because as you say, it doesn't happen that fast. I will need to work on it a lot. But, it made me think it is not something that impossible for me. And who knows, with work, sometime in the future maybe I will get there. Thank you, again!

for Li Yu Gang 李玉刚~ he is a special "category" in real Peking／Beijing Opera called "nandan", it's really amazing. traditionally NO females are allowed on stage, so all parts were performed by men. they not only train their voices, also dancing, acting, gestures etc... I personally still prefer male performers (nan dan) but they r getting rarer as of course it is more difficult to train ^^

I'm really interested in the baritone/tenor topic, as it's quite difficult to tell with Dimash. To me too he seems to be primarily a tenor, but I don't know. His speaking voice doesn't help either, he could be both based on that.

@@TotalInsanity I agree with you on this, my speaking voice is like a Baritone ~ Tenor variation and I sing primary as a Bass~Baritone. But higher rock\metal tenor registry also available to me. My speaking voice and singing voice sound nothing alike.

Drunken Concubine is a traditional Chinese opera piece :) He is singing in a traditional way and the characters are the Concubine and the King :) The other singer is a famous opera singer specialized in nan dan roles, which means he does the role of the concubine, there are no female singers, he does the female roles (he had special training for this from a young age).

Thank you for the free music/vocal lesson. The other gentleman is deep into classical/traditional Chinese pop and opera styles. He is a character who, in Chinese Operatic circles, would actually play and sing the parts of women. That's what I got from my research a long time ago. I could be wrong, though. And Dimash has come a very long way since his first rendition of the 5th element track. BTW, that part was composed for 'an alien' to sing, and Eric Serra, the composer, designed it very differently from classical song composition. The jumps were not meant for the human voice, and only 70% of the song was sung by the original soprano. The difficulty lied in the drastic and too rapid changes and jumps that the human larynx and vocal folds could not accommodate. Many sopranos have now been training to actually do it, but I am yet to hear someone who will bring back the magic of hearing it for the first time in the theatre back in the 90s. No one can reproduce the actual discordant notes of the last part of the original computerized version, but I hope I am proved wrong someday.
