      I could listen to Dimash sing all day long. I'm not as excited for Li's type of singing. Not sure why, it just didnt feel natural at all. That's not to say that a whistle tone in the 7th octave is, but I'm more accustomed to Dimash and his more full and round sounding voice .

    Li Yugang came from a village in northeastern China, got admission to university but had to give up because it was difficult for his parents to pay for the tuition fee. He made his way to stardom by years of hard work and went through a lot of twists and turns. He barely made a decent living, but he sent his earnings to his family and spent the rest of income to take lessons to learn the artistic skills that he needed for his career. HIs journey is like an epic drama. In short, he didn't have any formal vocal training and traditional opera skills until in his very early twenties. I wish his touching biography will be published one day and translated into English. (Who wouldn't shed tears when you learn that he took opera training in a room with below freezing temperature because that opera artist couldn't afford heat for his home)

    Full story is very sad. Dimash sings the role of Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, who sentenced his beloved Concubine Yang Guifei to death for treason. That's why Dimash growls so hard in the first part. Then she reminds how she was besotted with him and asks why there's only one step between love and hate. Insanely romantic lyrics. Li Yugang (born 1976) is an outstanding Chinese singer, composer and producer in the Peking Opera. Here he sings in the traditional Huadan style when a male singers play a female roles in Chinese opera. That's an allusion to The Drunken Concubine in Peking Opera. Brilliant Dimash! Awesome Li Yugang! Great work! Thanks a lot for your sincere reaction to the new vocal masterpiece!

    So the story behind the song. Loosely translated. Concubine Yang, one of the concubines of Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty , voluptuously pudgy, rendezvoused with Xuanzong Tang in the Pavilion of Flowers to drink and appreciate the beauty of the moon. Xuanzong Tang, however, stood her up and went to revel all night with another concubine. After waiting so long, and still no sight of the Emperor, Concubine Yang, possessed over by loneliness and animosity, had to drink all by herself. She drank until the moon was hight and bright upon the sky.

    • @pangzhiyu8098
      @pangzhiyu8098 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes that is correct, however, the flexibility kind of sacrifices power. In turn, Classical sacrifices flexibility for power. But, singers from both styles CAN overcome this "disability" with practice, just like in Li Yugang and Dimash's case.

    Another great reaction. "Drunken Concubine" is one of the masterpieces by Mei Lan-Fang, and is set in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It is mostly a one-person show and tells a story of the emperor's beloved concubine Yang Yuhuan, also known as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. The main character of this opera is Yang, played here by Li Yugang. Dimash takes on the role of the emperor. One night Yang arranges a banquet in the imperial garden and waits for the emperor to come, but he never shows up. Yang is informed by her eunuch servants that the emperor chose another concubine over her. She feels humiliated, furious and depressed. The opera shows the change of Yang's mood as she begins to drink heavily. "The icy moon rises above the island, making the world so clear," Yang says, expressing her feelings through lyrics and embeds her emotions onto the moon.
    Li Yugang specializes in "nándàn" roles, which is a male who plays a female role in Peking opera. The way he moves (knees bent together and those "meows" have a special meaning in the traditional opera). What is most amazing about Li is that he couldn't study at the university or conservatory of music, he is absolutely an autodidact which is so admirable. He is 42 years young. In 2009, he was invited to join the "China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater" and became China's First Class Artist (National Treasure). In that same year, Li Yugang was invited to perform at Sydney Opera House in Australia, only the second Chinese artist to have done so, and was awarded the Southern Cross Gold Prize for Culture by the Australian Government. He has become an icon in China's contemporary cultural scene. Dimash was invited to sing with him.

    Hi Caleb! Always love your reaction to Dimash. So the show is Spring Festival Gala of Jiangsu Channel 2020.
    Li Yùgāng is a Beijing Opera performer. He plays female roles on stage. And the original name of Drunken Concubine should be literally translated into New Drunken Concubine, since Drunken Concubine is pure opera and should be sung in a female’s voice throughout the song. But Li mixes pop elements (shown in the first part of the song) into BeiJing opera. The vocal techniques he uses in the clip are actually traditional Chinese opera techniques. 😉

I Love his voice too.

    Hi my dear Friend , thanks for great reaction as always it is really weird that Dimash is adding to his voice day by day. I think he will soon reach the seventh octave😂😂 Anyway, the other singer forty-one year old he a very famous and great Chinese opera singer who is a female singer in Chinese opera because only males performs in Chinese opera. And it has a peculiar sound that relates to Chinese opera poetry and aesthetics💖💙

      actually, that's last time, now adays for Chinese Opera, females do female parts, male do male parts, but Li Yugang being Li Yugang still chooses to do female part and I'm telling you, he does Chinese Opera on the same level as how Dimash does Classical.

    Hi Caleb thanks for reacting to this performance. It is my favourite Di duet since it came out recently. I'm not sure about the story either but I read somewhere that Di is singing the role of an Emperor of an ancient dynasty (hence the chair/throne), while Li sings the part of his beloved concubine, who has been sentenced to death for treason! They are singing about love and hate and life and death.

    Li was definitely singing the woman’s part in Chinese Opera (like Hua did in Nunchucks and I like his tone better) and it seems that Li like Zhou Zhen could possibly be male Sopranos. In the Courts, not sure about China, there are the castrati and they were always soprano after that. ( some news fan for Dimash who thinks she is a delicate Genius said Dimash was a Castrati!!!! This chick says all kinds of weird stuff)
    Also Li,like Hua is wearing the Satin Bathrobe and slippers that Lesley Cheung wore in his concerts and inChina you cannot be Gay. He took his life, Hua knew him and sang many of his songs)
    Dimash has a fuller voice but because the way the Chinese speak and the tonal infections in their language they get this unusual sound, I doubt Dimash could sound like that.
    Thank you again for your reaction.

    Li is Chinese opera (Jing opera) singer. There are different type of Chinese opera in different area. Jing opera is popular Beijing and also is the national opera. And in Chinese opera males can play female role and females can play male role. It is common they need to practice different voice for the role. And the singing voices also have difference between young and old voice for both male and female roles. Li is famous for his lady role voice in the opera.

    Li has such a strange tone. It's quite interesting (although not as beautiful, warm, sweet, etc. as Dimash's). When Li goes up even higher, his tone becomes yet even more weird; at first it was borderline offputting but then I started liking those quirky sounds & tones. It's one of those things that's kind of a turn off at first then, after a few times, you kind of like it and you don't know why, lol.
    The way Dimash sounds is just so different and, to my untrained ears. It's not just his incredible amount of tones/timbres & colours but the technicalities of how he can add warmth and darkness to those upper sounds, not to mention the transitions & note-playing during sustains, etc. It really sounds special and like he's been training since a young child.
    I'm definitely going to search more of Li though. It's so interesting hearing him sing and, despite often not liking the sounds & tone he makes/uses, another side of me wants more of it, lol. Funny how the brain works.

      Yes I had exactly the same experience, at first hearing Li's singing was quite jarring, as if it didn't fit....an interruption, but then my ears became accustomed to the style and now I think it's amazing. Li's singing is SO precise and the meld with Dimash is incredible. I love this duet.

    • @johntibaldi9496

      What you just heard from Li is traditional Chinese opera. He is great not only because he can go so high, but because he sounds exactly like a woman. If you listen to any woman singing Chinese opera you’ll hear that. So that “quirkiness” you mention is super standard. It’s just that people outside China don’t really experience that sound much, so it feels alien

      Yes, Dimash has been training classical voice for 20 years and worked very hard for breath control and within the last 2 years his lower Register is richer and fuller, the Baritone and this is one of the few times I have heard Dimash go into the Whistle Register and the notes were very clear and Dimash might not I never heard him sing off key, sharp or flat, and perfect pitch singing a cappella.

    • @vincer9960
      @vincer9960 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@johntibaldi9496 Would you also consider the sounds/style Li makes from 5:09 - 5:27 "super standard"? I think that was the most "quirky" part but now, after maybe the 4th or 5th time hearing it, I like it and want to hear more, lol.
