A fun fact that you possibly haven't thought about: both the lowest and highest notes in this performance belong to Dimash. At the same time, the range between them completely covers the entire working range of very many world-class singers. Yes, I know that it is not quite right to measure vocalists only by the size of the range - Frank Sinatra is proof of this. Therefore, this is just a fun fact, which is not even so much surprising (especially if you know Dimash))

Good you know it is not quite right to measure vocalists only by the size of the range. Eventually, it's the emotion of the music that touches people, not howling. Thank you for enjoying this Chinese song ❤

This is a perfect duet. Dimash's vocal is unreal and the Diva Dance is so much fun! I'm overwhelmed. I would agree that Diva Dance is a more powerful song and hits much harder at first listen.
For Li, he's able to create that beautiful picture through his delicacy, which fits so smoothly with the Chinese instrument and the poetic lyrics. Drunken Concubine is just meant for his voice. I listened to it 10 years ago when I was a kid. Now with more life experiences, I truly taste the bitter and sweetness behind Drunken Concubine. It has rich cultural deposits as well. Might not be everyone's type. But if it hits, it takes you to a different place and you will feel so touched, and rethink about life.

They completed each other like two different birds singing together from two different world. Dimash portraying his classical opera and Kazakh music background and Li brings in Peking Opera style into the music. The fusion of both this music was unreal!

I love this performance too!!! Drunken Concubine in dialogue the tragic story between a famous concubine of the Chines imperial court, Li Yugang in that role, and the emperor, Dimash´s rol that´s why the throne at stage. At the end of the story the concubine is poisoned as a result of court intrigues. Li Yugang is a famous artist considered China´s National Treasure and he is a nan dan singer (male playing female roles) art forms from Peking Opera, giving the traditional art a modern edge. The way he moves (knees bent together and those "meows" have a special meaning in the traditional opera). What is most amazing about Li is that he could´nt study in the university or conservatory of music, he is absolutely autodidact which is so admirable!! Dimash is impeccable as usual 🎤❤️🌹🌹 Please react to another traditional song, a duet Dimash Tengri Swan Goose 👌💥 Vocals are amazing!!!

Oh, yes. Listeners are also treated to some Mongolian throat-singing in Swan Goose. It's worthwhile to read up on Mongolian mythology - the Swan Goose (Tengri) is the top deity in a vast pantheon, with interesting and somewhat contradictory habits. He flies, never landing, always over water; yet a number of legends have him appearing on the ground as avatars. The singer Tengri, who is amazing in his own right, has taken the deity's name and is - on stage, anyway - one of those avatars. The performance is thus wrapped up in all sorts of mythical resonances, as well as delightful vocal and instrumental musicality. As a bonus, the lyrics are wonderfully poetic, and for a change, the poetry translates beautifully into English - though one may have to spend some time with a search engine to discover this.
Dimash is rarely anything but at his best, but I especially enjoy his fusion works which combine music from multiple traditions, and his Kazakh ethnic performances. (He plays a mean dombra, too.)

As always, great reaction and analysis. "Drunken Concubine" is one of the masterpieces by Mei Lan-Fang, and is set in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). It is mostly a one-person show and tells a story of the emperor's beloved concubine Yang Yuhuan, also known as one of the Four Beauties of ancient China. The main character of this opera is Yang, played here by Li Yugang. Dimash takes on the role of the emperor. One night Yang arranges a banquet in the imperial garden and waits for the emperor to come, but he never shows up. Yang is informed by her eunuch servants that the emperor chose another concubine over her. She feels humiliated, furious and depressed. The opera shows the change of Yang's mood as she begins to drink heavily. "The icy moon rises above the island, making the world so clear," Yang says, expressing her feelings through lyrics and embeds her emotions onto the moon.
Li Yugang specializes in "nándàn" roles, which is a male who plays a female role in Peking opera. The way he moves (knees bent together and those "meows" have a special meaning in the traditional opera). What is most amazing about Li is that he couldn't study at the university or conservatory of music, he is absolutely an autodidact which is so admirable. He is 42 years young. In 2009, he was invited to join the "China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater" and became China's First Class Artist (National Treasure). In that same year, Li Yugang was invited to perform at Sydney Opera House in Australia, only the second Chinese artist to have done so, and was awarded the Southern Cross Gold Prize for Culture by the Australian Government. He has become an icon in China's contemporary cultural scene. Dimash was invited to sing with him.

I absolutely loved this performance, it was magical. I am so thankful that I discovered Dimash over four years ago, his magnificent voice has brought so much joy and happiness to my life. He has also introduced me to so many other amazing singers. I found this performance to be one of them, getting to hear Li sing this duet with Dimash stirred up my interest in Li Yugang, so I went and listen to more songs he sang. I now have a playlist of his performances that I often listen to, he is wonderful , to watch him play these spectacular roles is something I would never of seen before I discovered our beloved Dimash. Of course, Dimash the first singer I listen to everyday, from the time I get up in the morning till I go to bed, there is that spellbinding sound of his voice that touches my heart and soul daily. Thanks for your wonderful reaction. Hope all is well with you and your family. 🎼🎶🎤❤️🇺🇸🙏🏼

Beautiful interpretation. Two styles the traditional Chinese opera and the contemporary one, telling us a story at the beginning mixed with Diva Dance to end again with Drunken Concubine. Dimash and Li Yu Gang, present us as a dialogue, the tragic love story between a famous concubine (represented by Li Yu Gang) of the Chinese imperial court and the emperor (represented by Dimash) for that reason the two thrones in the stage. The Concubine has problems with her emperor as a result of the intrigues of the enemies in the imperial court. The emperor is sentencing the concubine to death (hence Dimash's fry vowel issuing the sentence). The concubine reminds the emperor of happy times together, but does not change the outcome, the death of the concubine. The amazing Diva dance part. Two great interpreters Greetings from Nicaragua 🇳🇮

Thank you so much for doing this one! Love your reaction and deconstruction! I love the story telling with their voices. 'Drunken Concubine' tells the story of the concubine, Li Yugang, who is before the Emperor, Dimash, for treason (I think). The Emperor is sentencing her to death (when he does the vocal fry), and she reminds him of the wonderful time that they had together when drunk. The Emperor wishes that they could have 1 more wonderful drunken time together. And intertwining this with 'Diva Dance' is just mind blowingly wonderful! Fantastic duet.

I've been on a Dimash rabbit hole lately and have been watching reactions so I know this is 2 years old but still appreciate the reaction... I noticed that a lot of people who react to this are very split on the mid-section Diva Dance where whether it's a blend of the Drunken Concubine or it's an ad lib by Li Yugang - I have been still looking for a translation because I think it may provide insight! But anyway I notice a lot of people scrunch up their faces and say they don't like how it sounds. And I wonder if it is more of for reactors who either don't listen to or don't have an appreciation for Chinese operatic style (or perhaps chinese style music in general) or else I also notice that SO many reactors are very familiar with Diva Dance and this addition to the song of course is either an ad lib or blending of the Drunken Concubine transition at this point perhaps that of course makes it sound different... and although Dimash performs Diva Dance differently pretty much every time he sings it, because of his classical training although he is not faithful to the original song (no one is since it is digitally manipulated to make it practically impossible haha), I think that to people who are familiar with the song Dimash's vocals and natural training will always sound closer to it even when he improvises a lot.
However, much like you I found it a VERY interesting interpretation, especially since they chose to sandwich it in between a performance of Drunken Concubine to add both what seemed to be likely Mandarin phrasing or at the very least the Peking Opera stylings into the Diva Dance section of the song to blend them together. Li's voice is beautiful, and of course stylings are very different, and Chinese opera is very different -- and even when he was singing his parts of Diva Dance he still used his style of singing. It was just a new and different type of singing which in my opinion is what a good adaptation should be. So like you, I appreciated this performance a lot, and found it very beautiful that they were able to very much mix two very different styles of music but still work to blend them and in my opinion not let one style fully take over the performance -- that it felt like a true duet. Of course I'm sure each singer has their own fans, but I felt it was beautiful to see them sing together and at the end when they hit and finished those last notes together I was just in awe over what I had just seen.

The part of the "Diva Dance" that was programmed voice samples in the movie was sung by Dimash at his Bastau Concert as a very difficult descending run. There is another version from Singer 2017 where, because it is so short, it was paired up with "Confessa" an Italian song. In that performance he replaced the run with a series of staccato notes. If you watch that performance, don't bother watching Gloria Wu's version for the Eng. subs, because she also replaced some performance footage with some movie clips which I guess she felt fit the theme of the song. There is also a dancer for the "Confessa" half who represents the character of the cheating woman in the song.

I love watching the way the two sing with their hands. Li uses classical posture and purposely formalized motions--I don't know the words for it, exactly--but he moves in a kind of stylized dance and is so graceful in his arm positions and hand shapes. Dimash....moves his hands to conduct himself as he sings. As much contrast as there is in their voices, there is just as much difference in the way the two perform and control the stage with their body language.

The emperor in his later year did not take care of the politics well and was on the run with this concubine when his military following blamed her as the cause of the issues the country was facing. He tried but could not spare her life so she was hung on a hill (which was mentioned in the song).
Li is a famous Chinese opera singer that sings female roles. His raise to his current status was one filled with hardship and trials.
And just want to thank you for doing the research and understand the difference ways of producing a sound base on cultural backgrounds. The song is on the perspective of the concubine and cleverly added a duet part in.
At the end of the Diva Dance portion, the 2 lines Li sang is from the famous poem written about the the couple. I don't know if it was ever used in the opera, but I love how he used the stage style call.

Loved your enthusiasm! I LOVE this performance and listen to it often. I have also looked up more videos with Li in them, well worth the look. If you want another take on the Diva Dance watch Confessa +Diva Dance. Confessa is sung in two languages and is a sad song about a man lamenting his woman's changing...she is not the same. Dimash really gets into it!

👉Dimash and Li Yugang are here at Dragon TV Shanghai Spring Festival Gala 2020. Li Yugang, born: July 23, 1978 (age 42) is a male Chinese opera singer and performer in the China National Opera & Dance Drama Theater; a member of the National Youth Federation. He specialises in "nan dan" role, which is male who plays female role in Peking opera. Li Yugang has released a number of CDs.
👉 ’The Drunken Concubine’’ is a story that is said to have happened in the Tang Dynasty emperor Ming-Huang. Yang Yu-Huan was the favorite among all of the emperor's concubines. They arranged a rendezvous one evening in the imperial gardens. After waiting a long time, Yang realizes that the emperor had made plans with another concubine. This humiliation makes her angry and depressed at the same time, which leads to her getting drunk all by herself. (Wiki helped). 🌼🇩🇪

The vocal fry phrase he has started using in multiple performances should be Dimash's motto: "Ascolta la voce." Listen to the voice. It's also an alternative or translated title of "Know."

Dimash is the best singer in the WORLD and there are no doubts about that, his voice is a prodigy of nature and a genetic marvel since his parents are two glories of singing from Kazakhstan since he was 5 years old, he sings publicly and has more than twenty years of lyrical training and graduated from the university of music, he is a singer, composer, arranger and multi instrumentalist, he plays more than seven musical instruments and sings in more than Ten(10) languages, he is also a great performer and a great artist who lives and feels music He is not an imitator of voices , Dimash has his own style and is one of the forerunners of the "Popera" he also has a very pleasant, Humble and simple personality, easy access, which makes it very easy to follow, he always travels with His family and friends is a very educated person and an example to follow, he has become known for his musical talent not for getting into trouble or scandals, It has a very wide vocal range of approximately 7 octaves ,he is a singer with a wide vocal range very versatile is Baritone, TENOR , Soprano, against TENOR, mezasoprano, everything at the same time is how to have 5 singers in one, it has a male and female voice, also many resources such as vibrato, "melismas", falsetto, Staccato, whistle tone, reaching a( D8 )live "Outside of Piano"at the concert of Gakku in an unforgettable day, at his young age he continues to improve and grow musically to perfection, he has a good physical presence he measures 191 cm or 6 "3", he is very famous and recognized in Asia and now he is becoming known In Europe and America, ALL their songs are spectacular, it always goes from low to high, soft to spectacular at the end, in my almost half a century of life I never heard so much quality and it is the hope of continuity of the classical genre because all the old tenors have already Almost all of them died and Dimash can sing like them but none of them can sing like Dimash, being a Man he sings better than any Tenor and his female voice is superior to that of any average Soprano, greetings and a hug from Venezuela🇻🇪, "Dears" Forever ❤️👍🏻 Sorry for copying and pasting my informative comment in ALL the Video reactions to Dimash what I see but I do it with the intention of sharing information about him and what I think that in the music industry there are many artists who have been successful and have no talent and are bad people and they do not set a good example for the youth, Dimash and his music deserve to triumph in America, Europe and the whole WORLD, do you want to have already read my comment please come by without problem there is always someone who for the first time knows this information and I won't get tired of sharing it with all my friends"Dear" around the world, thanks for reading and for supporting Dimash 🙏🏻S.O.S. Hi there: Dimash released 3 new songs at the New Wave 2021 festival! Please, can you react to them? Stranger is a very powerful song and beautifully presented in a very theatrical way. It sounds like a melody and music for a movie sound track. Written by Igor Krutoy. The second one is a pop song called Fly Away and the third one is Ave María where you get a ticket to heaven and back. It’s a vocalized version written by Igor Krutoy again and Dimash’s voice is the voice of God talking to us through Dimash’s voice. Hope to see your reactions soon. Thanks a lot for this reaction. Love from 🇦🇷💙🇰🇿

A sad tale between the Emperor (Dimash) who must execute his beloved concubine (Li) due to intricate politics. When they started communicating in 👽 language, I was like 👀... literary rainbow of of octaves from growl to whistle.

Li Yugang is a Chinese 'nan dan' who specialises in playing female roles in Chinese Opera. He can sing much more 'normally', and very well. To our ears its crazy, but still pretty amazing. Watching him in character in opera gives context to his voice.

Dimash has led me to many more fabulous singers in China. You must check out Zhou Shen who has a magical Countertenor voice and is up there right after Dimash in my book! Also, when you can, watch Ayanga, a musical actor and his performances. The backstory on him is so interesting --son of Mongolian herders who is now one of China's biggest stars. Found so many singers on the Super Vocal program (first year ) which has English subtitles.

Dears from the West, let's bring Dimash to #1 on fan's competition in MTV USA Friday Livestream ( 5 to 8 PM). Just register and vote REQUEST DIMASH. No need to add any emoji otherwise your request will be not accounted. Dears from the East are voting 17 weeks, but for that part of planet it is very difficult time (middle of night or daybreak ) and many of Dears can't vote. Tvitter is not available in some of countries 😢. DIMASH holds #2 place because of lack of amount of voting fans. He deserves to be # 1, doesn't he?
