  • Recently I took a trip to NYC & I bought some houseplants! I thought it may help ease some minds to see the process of packaging & flying with plants as a carry on. I was soooo nervous the first time I bought new indoor plants & had to fly with them, but it really is such an easy straight forward process & a lot of people do it! So don't worry, friend. You got this (: Buy that new plant because it will be a great travel companion home. :P

    If someone were to go a little overboard shopping for plants far away (hand raised) and you cannot possibly fit them under a plane seat, one could simply mail them home. (I would not want them in cargo, if that is even allowed.)

    • @bkrbkrl
      @bkrbkrl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@XPrincess30 No. You have to look up what the rules are for living things entering whatever country you are from. Many places have rules and they are all different. Try it without checking and complying and your package could be seized and destroyed. You will NOT be reimbursed for your loss.

    I know your video was about domestic travel, but an addition would be to remember to find out about the import regulations when traveling internationally. You don't want to end up in a situation where you have bought something nice and pretty and not be allowed to bring it to the country. And those rules are super important anyway to keep invading species, pests and plant disease away from local plants.

    • @valiumk.9489
      @valiumk.9489 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think that here, in Greece, we have extra strict import plant rules, most of the EU nurseries won't ship to Greece and the ones that do, usually send them barerooted. There are even a few tv ads regarding importing plants and how dangerous that is.

    • @mollymoon510
      @mollymoon510 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was about to comment the same thing! Bringing plants from one country to another is either very difficult and requires planning an paperwork and permits, or is prohibited entirely. Don't go to a different country expecting to bring home plants with you!!!

    • @orginaljun

      Travel by train through Europe and buy plants if you live in Europe? I know with international flight its very strict. I have to agree with traveling flight internationally, almost everything is forbidden. I understand the hazard, because some insects eat entire crops of vegetables of that country, which cause economic value lose.

    I bought about 20 plants while in Florida and traveled home to Washington state. My carry-on and personal bag were both filled. My state agricultural regulations require all plants coming into the state domestically have no soil and could not be from an outdoor nursery. So, all my plants came home in wet paper towels. All the plants did fine 🙂 and I saved hundreds because plants are cheaper in Florida. And TSA had no issues with the plants.

    I recently traveled with houseplants and packed them in my checked bag and they arrived just fine. I remember seeing a blog post about someone who travelled to an orchid show who brought two extra checked bags just for their new orchids lol. Depending on the states you're travelling to/from, you definitely need to know about any kind of restrictions for plant travel also!

    This is the energy we want!!! You're a total gem. Stoked you got new babies (and hope they are thriving still!) you probably won't see this in time but if you do.... tomorrow I travel with a HOLIDAY BOQUET ha! Complete surprise delivery but when I'll be gone for 15 days it will definitely die before I'm home!
    So here's my thinking- because he's 14 inches tall.... we are going in stowaway bins overhead. Scary, but I have a solid plan - i think. I am thinking I use your paper napkin + tissue paper method, since it's floral foam I am lucky but I'm still going to drain the pot just in case it has a water lake inside. I am also going to also put the base in a cardboard box (if I have to make it custom, I will make it and one for the top of the bouquet as it is MAD DELICATE as well so it's a snug little situation for travel for it.) Also going to go the extra mile and opt for additional legroom so I can stow my bag first AND I'll be taping on a notecard saying FRAGILE THIS END UP, PLEASE DO NOT FLIP BAG TO WHEELS OUT THANK YOU!!! so HOPEFULLY it gets there.
    Would attach a photo but just think xmas style bouquet with white carnations creating a little bear (complete with eyes and a santa hat), red carnations, ferns and fir foliage with a string of gold glitter balls as ornaments in a nutcracker drum ceramic pot!

    I have done that recently when I flew from Virginia to Wisconsin . I was able to bring 5 kinds of plants . I have used paper bags and at the bottom I had to put a cardboard to make the paper hardy enough . I was question only one time because of my shoulder bag and my other hand carry but when I told the guy it’s my lunch . He let me board then I immidiately sit down in my seat and get my plants in the corner where no one care .

It has a different pocket where I can keep entertainment/snacks, and I can slide an extra bit of cardboard against the pocket wall for extra insurance. Hi. We live in London. We came to India in the month of February and got the covid locked down. I developed love for greens and decorating my mother's home with so many plants. Im learning how to take care of them with many try and error. Im doing pretty well.
    Now, im so attached to them that i know i will miss them when i go back. I want to take some of my favourites one with me. There are many plants which can be propagated from leaves. I want to take leaves as will take less space. Is it possible? If yes, please let me know how to do that safely.
    Thank you.... your video is very helpful 😊

    super useful post. I'm moving back home and flying is way cheaper and less complicated except for the plant part. I have two tall-ish plants (skinny 12 inch pair of avocado trees). and 2 bushy (10 in diameter each) plants. plus pothos that are in water only. any suggestions? it's a 1.5 hour direct flight. so hoping as long as I can camouflage the taller ones as I board - once we're in the air, I can sneak them upright, maybe blocking the view with my legs....?

    Curious how this would work flying into California. When you drive here from Arizona, you are stopped at the border and questioned whether you have plants (or fruits and vegetables) in your car. Their concern is about bugs and disease affecting the agriculture in the state.

    I have a question, what if someone were to have over 30 plants (that would be me), big and small, and and needed to move them all to another country in Europe? Would that many plants be allowed on a plane? I tried to find anything on it online but everything I found is only about one or two plants that people can carry in their hands or about one big plant. Could you provide any tips on that or maybe direct me to someone who would be able to help?

      Hey! I live in Hawaii, I know some but not a ton as I haven’t tried to take anything out of the state! On the plane they give you an agriculture questionnaire when entering into the state, you have to declare a whole variety of things. As for things leaving there are some things like plumerias that you can find packaged and ready to go. I’m not 100% sure but I think they are so cautious because of our various insects. Honestly if you are planning on buying plants you might want to ask TSA or take a look at the Hawai’i.gov link.
      Hope this helps!
