That does make sense but I live in a 480 sq foot apartment 1 bed 1 bath moved from a 2 bed 1.5 bath apartment w laundry room and walk in closet. I had to get rid of most of my furniture and w.o organization my new place still feels cluttered I don't have much stuff but it does need to be organized to not overwhelm the small space :)
Yes and no. Part of it is definitely declutterring, but part of it is organizing things in a manner that works for you. Let’s say my kids need a lot of drawing/crafting supplies for various projects. Since they are needed, they need to be kept neat to allow them to be actually used. So it will depend.
@@Linds-pp3lz check out the minimalist documentary. Love minimalism, saved my mental health and finances when I lived in a studio apartment. I have zero debt and a house after becoming a minimalist and following Dave Ramsey. Though... I do have a lot of cats lol
@@Carola16wanted, not needed. I was a super artistic and creative kid. My folks were against me going into the arts. So since there was a lack of art supplies, I learned to make do with what was a around, fix things, figure out how things work, etc. Your kids don't NEED art supplies, you WANT it for them and they may WANT them. If they didn't have them, they'd find other ways or use other mediums to express their creativity
Thank you! Finally someone says “I like where I live. I don’t want to change my house.” There is something special about feeling satisfied and contented with one’s space. A designer that helps a client feel those things is worth their weight in gold.
Same. My husband and I bought our first house a couple years ago and we're hoping we never have to move out. It really feels like home to us, and we can't wait to remodel a bit and really make it our dream home I'm not the type to want to move every 5 years. Just get me a cozy place I can stay in till I die, thankyouverymuch
I think our taxes should not only pay for clean drinking water but our water usage in general. Corporations and other companies should pay for their water usage not people/citizens.
Nick please don’t listen to those people on swapping out the clock behind you. I get comfort when tuning in knowing that clock will always read 12:17, something has to be stable in this ever changing world.
I also have a clock hanging in my living room, except mine stopped telling time well over five years ago. I guess now I can pass it off as an aesthetic design choice?
For me the worst with the acrylic packaging is when people repackage their laundry detergents and cleaning chemicals into acrylic packaging! Those opaque, safety sealed containers they come in with the warning labels and poison control numbers on them are like that for a reason!
And on top of this, if you really are that person that neeed it, you could instead peel off the label, cut out the vital info to stick back onto the bottle and have your clean aesthetic. It's just not worth it for cleaning supplies, especially since some chemicals don't play well with certain packaging
If it's aesthetics that people are into, I recommend a company called CleanCult. You buy glass bottles/dispensers for all their cleaning products (really pretty and well made - choice of colors), and then you get a subscription to get the cleaning products shipped to you in recyclable packaging whenever you need it. They have all-purpose cleaner, laundry detergent, dish detergent, dishwasher soap, regular soap, etc. And no, I'm not an influencer. Just an actual, happy customer! / Edit: The glass bottles have silicone covers on the bottoms of them, to protect them for life. I got the periwinkle color. Check it out!
Do not get me started on opaque vs clear containers. If a container is opaque, it's probably like that because the contents should not be exposed to light! There is a special hell for people who take herbs and spices, put them in cutesy clear jars and then put them ON THE WINDOWSILL.
@@thaliacrafts407 HAHA I love it. We have a great bulk food store that packages all of their stuff in bags or plastic containers. However, they get all jumbled up in my pantry and my rack for spices, oils and such. I have to repackage them to fit or keep from getting humid. I bought Ball Mason Jars in sized that fit my pantry and cabinets (we have an old farm house) or my door hanging rack. I can reuse them, clean them and label them and refill them with what ever I need. They aren't cutsey, are a small investment, but I can use them for whatever. Bonus, everything stays behind the door unless being used so no exposure. Most of my madness is because I'm not used to living with small cabinets. Oh well.

“Influencing is such a stupid job” 😂😂 I appreciated how angry and honest he was. So refreshing to hear social media personalities actually speaking facts and being honest about the wasteful industry that is social media influencing. We need another video hating on more stupid things ❤️
Another big problem with pouring your acidic orange juice and coffee (And especially soda) into new containers is that the brand packaging has specialized coatings on the inside to protect the product from spoiling.
Maybe those are intended for when you make something, and need to keep it is a container. Cuz pouring from the bottle into another bottle is very dumb.
The containers shown don't make the most sense but I have been using rubbermaid pitchers for year for juice and left over coffee without any issues. Not for making stuff look pretty but because frozen concentrate or kool-aid powder requires a container
"Are you a child ?" with the fancy pants/bougie ice cube tray designs (that look like a Saturday morning cartoons (Lucky Charms) cereal: (classic) marshmallow hearts, stars, (purple) horseshoes, (green) clovers, blue moons, unicorns, rainbows and tasty red balloons.
It's not only the best-before-date you lose when you transfer juice and stuff into those sensless plastic containers. You also have to drink everything in only a few days because it has already been opened. You can't really store it anymore. You don't reduce waste and you have to wash the containers every single time...
Yes and also in these kind of videos I see that the juice/coffee/whatever they pour into these containers, never fits perfectly, they always have some leftovers what do they do with those? It either goes down the drain, which should be a crime against humanity, or they have a second fridge where they put all the unaesthetic leftovers. The second is to absurd even for influencers
I appreciate your honesty in admitting the differences between influencers and their money, and the average working American and their money. People get so caught up in achieving an influencer style life because they don't understand the differences in HOW money is earned.
and it's just staged anyway. That's not the influencer's real life. They just set if up for the shots. No use trying to live like that unless they're in Asia with a whole suite of household staff. I mean, I personally knew someone wealthy back in Dubai and at best their pantry looked like a convenience store. All in original single serve packaging because they wanted to have different brand options for a given type of product available at all times. So yeah, the stupid acrylic repackaging trend is just there to trick social climbers into what they assumed to be the high life.
Fantastic caffeine withdrawal rant! Talk speed at x1.5, pitch at 2 notches higher, vocabulary at 50 times the sting. Added bonus, making total sense and being educational. Amazing.
I slowed him down to 0.75 so I could actually listen to what he had to say….also, I was tired after a long, tiring day so I was probably running at 0.75 of my own normal pace.
The ONLY acrylic organizers that MIGHT be a step up are the sealable ones for storing things like flour, sugar, etc. Way tidier than the crumpled bag (that it comes in from the store). Less likely to spill, stays fresh longer, and less likely to attract any errant pests. But... the same thing could probably be accomplished by reusing the containers that OTHER foods come in. That GIANT clear plastic bin of cheese balls? The one that mixed nuts comes in? The one that the salad greens came in? Wash those out and reuse. Kind of like everyone's grandma had her mending kit in a Danish Butter Cookie tin.
The problem with re-using older containers for stuff like flour is that you have to be absolutely certain you cleaned them out properly. Imagine a cake or pie baked with brad that was in an improperly cleaned out bin of cheese balls. That's not to say those plastic tubs aren't useful. I have....probably more pretzel tubs than I should. I use them for storing craft supplies. When you need a place to keep 20 lbs of jump rings together, they're hard to beat!
Yeah we buy "lunchboxes" for this purpose... Never heard of acrylic or this clear gloss thing irl but yes, some lunchboxes have better aesthetic than others.
I use IKEA's glass containers for all of that stuff, the small, jam jar ones, are perfect for spices, and the larger ones are great for other dry stuff. The seal is airtight, and you can just pop them in the dishwasher to clean, and in the oven to sterilize.
It is refreshing to see someone in the industry pushing common sense for a change, instead of promoting the latest "must have" fashion victim (hot today and not tomorrow) thing. I salute you sir.
The first 2 minutes of you explaining how a regular person will never out-consume an influencer was perfect. I think that is the best explanation I’ve ever heard on how we are continually pushed to buy but don’t acknowledge the fact that the trends we are trying to keep up with are never going to stick longing enough for us to enjoy them
Everything you need is already easily accessible at the store. So the only option influencers have left is to sell stuff you don't need. And for that they need to come up with new trends to keep a fresh market that's ready to buy what they sell.
I redid my cupboards and refrigerator with the long acrylic trays that go the whole depth of the shelves. I’ve loved it - I grouped like items together, and when I want, say, condiments, I slide the whole thing out and there they are. It really helps keep long expired items from being lost at the back of the shelves. However, this is exactly what Nick was saying was fine - I bought good quality, strong, aesthetically pleasing clear containers that increase the functionality of my shelves and drawers and have been working well for 5+ years now. I have no intention of throwing them out when they are no longer trendy and buying something else.
I have the same type of organizers in the fridge. When something leaks, so easy to cleanup! Also easy to get stuff in the back. I’ve noticed that I no longer have things stuck in the back that expires.
I bought some, too, for the fridge and the cabinets. Now I have extras lying around because they actually made it harder to find stuff or in some cases, fit stuff in.
I freaking love Angry Nick. I'm an organization junkie, but I'm also super cheap. I bought a bunch of clear plastic boxes in two sizes from Target in 2002, and I am STILL using them. I have reshuffled and relabeled them over and over, occasionally acquiring a few more as I conquer additional chaos spaces in the house. Once you acquire basic clear boxes, never, NEVER throw them away.
I don’t even throw away my cardboard Amazon boxes!!!! Iffffff they are the right size. I find them to keep some rubbish trash I use once a year and wham it goes into my store room ❤ And I write what’s in it with a marker. And it solves all the problem😅
@@lakshmikrithika2521Same! I have an old pet food box that has the perfect size to hold my cans of tomato paste. Keeps them from getting lost and ending up as kitty's playthings, and didn't cost me a cent
@@lakshmikrithika2521 I've done that and in the short term it works fine. The issue is that you wind up with a bunch of random box sizes that don't really stack well together. I personally just buy clear sterilite boxes in one of two sizes for pretty much everything. I still use the cardboard boxes from time to time, but over time I've been moving more and more towards the standardization and then putting items in the bins in reusable clear bags or using dividers to keep them separate. I've kept buying more and more of them and the amount of stuff that's disorganized has decreased a lot. I'll probably start date labeling the bins based on the last time that I used them and periodically going through them to see which bins I still need. It's been working quite well, but I've got ADHD and there aren't many options that genuinely work for ADDers on the market.
"Your fridge doesn't need to look that good....just stuff it in. It's fine" Thank you for reminding us to keep it real! Especially with the acrylic food packaging! For some reason, I love stuff like this.
In my pantry I use $1 plastic shoe storage boxes from Target without the lid to organize large bags of dried chiles, bottles of hot sauce etc. Its been working well for me for so many years and it's so cheap.
@@BabyGirlTiny Yes, but it doesn't need to be expensive either or having to click on a link. My fridge is organized with $1 baskets that are actually pretty heavy duty and have handles I can pull out like drawers. I have about 8 of them. Cost me $8 and tax. Had them for years now and I can wash them. I don't need to spend $25+ on per container for my fridge.
@BabyGirlTiny That's not the issue. The issue is decanting food from sterilized/sealed store packaging into new containers that significantly reduce shelf life, have no important info, and you have to wash anyway. Wasteful consumption. As opposed to, say, having a clear acrylic tray to keep all your condiments in, or organizer for veggies or something. That stuff is totally fine if it suits your needs.
It helps that he believes that good interior design can be done without completely draining your bank account on luxury brands. Him being in favor of big box stores while also acknowledging buying from small businesses is a good thing is great. I found a silicone ice cube tray for a dollar at a thrift store, and I thought, hey! I can make those cute, big square ice cubes for cocktails and mocktails sometimes, neat! And I have, a couple of times. But like, that’s the level of commitment a novelty ice cube tray deserves, you know? A dollar at as thrift store, and only having one. $21?!!! Multiples??? What the WHAT.
I’ve bought those acrylic organisers in charity shops because I have a very small home and everything needs organising but now way I’m spending money on all that plastic. I wish these didn’t exist but the charity shops are overflowing so I don’t feel bad about getting them there.
Yeah, people only need one or two ice trais in their lides, and you might as well have them be cute, but can't imagine filling half my freezer with just funny shaped solid water
I have several, but we have allergies in the family, so we make our own boullion cubes in several differnt flavors and learned the hard way that we want them to look different to distiguish them. So they have a definite purpose. For flavored cubes for the summer, we usually just puree what ever fruit is close to being done and freeze it in a standard cube, first come first served and when it is gone it is gone. For us it is about reducing food waste and not triggering a severe allergy because a manufacturor put "Natural Flavors". We have also been doing it for close to 20 years...
The only specialty ice cube tray I have is two that are shaped like cats and I got those as gifts one christmas because I love cats lol (I have 4 kitties). Spending so much money so you can have a million different shapes of ice is just strange.
After working in a restaurant for years there are two fridge containers that I use at home and make sense to me: - A full size Cambro where all the defrosting meat lives - this prevents cross contamination when the packages leak - A smaller container for all the lunchmeat and cheese so I can pull out a single container when prepping a sandwich or salad instead of hunting down all the different ingredients that get scattered all over the shelf when left to their own volition
I also have a dedicated container for the sandwich toppings, makes lunch times easier, but I just put meat into a container or on a plate to defrost, don't have a dedicated container for it.
Just want to say how much I appreciate your writing, spelling and grammar usage, including the comments to this comment, as well. It’s so rare on social media today…maybe better on Nick’s channel compared to many other channels.

This video was a just-in-time find. I had literally just seen a TH-cam about a stuffed waffle maker. I went to Amazon to check it out, read great user reviews and because of the steep price was having reservations about actually pulling the trigger on something that seemed pretty cool but do I really need it? Nick just saved the day with some cold water in my face. Actual added value to my life? Minimal at best. Good use of kitchen space? Not really. Likelihood of it ending up in the "donate" box within a year - pretty damn high. Thanks for a reminder about common sense and impulse control, even if it wasn't specifically about waffles.
Loved your rant! The keyword here is “overconsumption.” Yes! I totally agree. We don’t need any more stupid and completely useless plastic containers in our world.
I have no plastics in my home with the exception of the framing around electronics and even there I’ve found wooden and silver frames that mask the plastic frames on my televisions an computers because I can’t stand the looks of them. Even my waste cans are wicker and the one in my kitchen is stainless steel. I just can’t stand plastic. My rugs are either natural wool or cotton. I wouldn’t tolerate synthetics.

My son was born early, before my friends and family could hold a baby shower for me. Best thing that ever happened. I got some hand me downs and I went out and bought exactly what I wanted and no more. I still got a bunch of baby gifts, but most people asked me what I needed or wanted first, and the gifts were spaced out so I didn't have all Newborn clothes and then needed to get more clothes as he immediately grew out of them.. buy what you need as you need it, and that goes for the new house as well as the new person. Accept hand me downs for both as well. But only what you actually like and use. Don't feel guilty for turning down family heirlooms you hate.
The good news is you wait for a bit and second hand sites are gonna be filled with acrylic trays for fraction of the price! I love second hand shopping :3
Try to eliminate as much plastic out of your home as you can. Try storing items in glass. Reuse your glass jars from coffee or tomato paste or whatever. I transfer my milk into glass carafe when I bring it home because I don’t want it sitting in plastic. Plastic is so not good for your health.
The good thing about glass jars is that you can sterilise them quite easily. And I second recycling the jars you get food in, too. It's a cheap way of getting storage containers. Use jars for storing dry food, for storing dummies and teethers, for storing sweets, for storing cotton wool, for storing all sorts of bits and bobs.
I'm a child at heart and I have two funky ice cube trays that I got as gifts. Using them sparks joy because I like the cute shapes and it motivates me to drink more water. They also make for very cute Jello Jigglers. But you don't need 50 million of those trays.
Yep, if a couple bring you joy and you use them, then definitely keep them. Personally, I have a pair of oxo ice cube trays. They're super easy to just get a couple ice cubes out and resist leaking. I might get a 3rd just for water bottles, but I haven't yet, so I may never.
You are 100% right about introducing bacteria into food when switching to the acrylic containers. I think glass would be more practical as you can actually sterilize it and are not chemicals from plastic.
My parents do similar with glass jars and beans. They go to auctions and will pick up a lot of similar sized jars, then they use them to store beans and other dry goods- looks good on the shelves, cost very little, and will last forever.
Yes, just make sure that it's dishwasher safe for best use. Also, you can write on glass with a dry erase pen to keep track of what the thing is and the expiration date. The only real issue is that glass breaks if you drop it, so perhaps not a great option if you've got kids or are a klutz.
@@SmallSpoonBrigade I have a dishwasher, but I don't use it, lol. I have a lot of vintage kitchen ware that would get destroyed in the dishwasher. I just used it yesterday at his house and sorrowfully asked him, you've been putting this in the dishwasher haven't you...Ah, the printing had been half washed off, sigh. If you love vintage glassware, you'd understand.
I don’t think the acrylic is cleaner, I think the process of pouring from the original container to the acrylic introduces the bacteria. I know because my orange juice went bad after I poured it in a glass container

Finally someone who tells it like it is. The overconsumption not only on Tik tok but also on some YT design channels is outrageous. In what world a perfectly good couch from 3 years ago is “so dated and so old that it needs to go”? Not in the real world. As far as organizing stuff to the point of replacing every container your food comes in it is a total waste of time and if there are people who live like that they must have very boring lives. Thank you for keeping it real.
I agree and I've stopped watching channels that keep updating their home over and over. If they really need to show off sponsored items then do a free makeover for a subscriber who needs it.
The irony is never lost on me when people say "oh my gosh this is so dated!" and then proceed to redo it with something that is clearly a trend that's going to last for maybe 5 years... and then look outdated by 2030. What matters is if you like it not if it's "on trend." Trends are fleeting, but what's your style is timeless to you, and that's what counts cause it's YOUR home and no one else's
@@lindsaymorrison7519 It's very apparent when watching old videos mixed with new ones, which I do when I find a channel that is new to me. Then it becomes obvious that the aim of the new video is to get in brand new furniture from a sponsor, but I would not had known it if I had not been "binge watching" old videos. Some of these youtubers also buy huge houses, which I understand helps their content, but it makes it look so easy to become the owner of a mansion at a young age and also so "common practice" to constantly change decor and even big furniture, which it isn't. I believe when they do these big makeovers they should point out the total cost of the furniture. And even if I could I personally wouldn't want to change my furniture every 3 years. First of all, I don't have time for that. Also, when I choose a piece I do it with intention, not just for the sake of the money but to enjoy it. Otherwise what's the point? It would be manic behavior to constantly change everything.
THIS! On top of this being more sustainable, an added bonus will be that your place will look like an actual interesting person lives there! Instead of it looking like a showroom/dentists office.
I LOVE this!!!! Thank you!!!!! By the way.., our ice tray stopped working, and so my husband bought cheap ice trays, and we use a plastic container that we got from ordering food from our fave restaurant, and we just fill that up. Works great! Thank you for your no nonsense outlook! LOVE! So Refreshing!!!
I love this, Nick. The acrylic repacking and organization is a new level for shaming women. I would rather have a wonderful vacation with the money I am NOT wasting on plastic. I prefer having memories of fun times and not being a slave to "Keeping Up with the Kardashians."
Also it might look nice on video, but in reality this acrylic stuff just looks and feels so cheap. Like you set up an aesthetically pleasing bathroom and then you put that plastic garbage under your towels? Or put all your cosmetic stuff in clear plastic drawers like the world's ugliest pharmacy? Just why? I'm not a fan of putting everything in wicker baskets or tying bows around it or stuff like that, but at least it looks nice and not like a random leftover plastic packaging that now stacks up in your bathroom.
Repacking everything in my kitchen in acrylic trays have become a game changer for me. Makes it easier to clean and grab stuff. I can see an influ3ncer saying something else is better and changing to whatever that is though. But I truly love how practical acrylic trays are. Especially acrylic lazy Susan's..and you can't go on vacation for the $43 you'd spend on trays
One place I see repackaging as useful is in the pantry. Especially with a small family size or individual as a household, buying in bulk or anything that doesn't properly re-seal can go into a container better suited for long term storage (flour, sugar, pastas, nuts, etc). Also if you have limited storage space being able to organize upwards (on taller shelves) without burying stuff under other stuff or having imminent collapse of random boxes when you open the door can be very useful. But you have to go in knowing what genuinely needs restoring in something else and have the habit of using that storage.
I so appreciate that you opened the video up with your own experience and profitabily of being an influencer! I think my biggest gripe with anti-influencing videos is that they completely ignore that they themselves are influencers that profit.
I’m new here and i just want to say thank you! Over consumerism is a serious issue and videos like this one are not only highly educational but you also make them fun to watch. Subscribed 😊
I'll say one thing about the acrylic containers, are they practical in YOUR home. We live in London, UK and summer is notoriously known for ants. Couple years back ants managed to get into out larder and into my children's cereal boxes, I guess the honey in them attracted the ants. So I bought those acrylic cereal boxes and kept our cereals free from ants.
I have maybe a dozen of the acrylic containers in my home. Two for my pet food to keep it fresh and pest free and the rest are used to store some crafting and jewelry making supplies, and the only reason I went with them is the fact that they are clear, so it's easy to look at the bins on the shelf and see the products without having to dig through drawers or boxes. I couldn't imagine organizing my entire pantry, refrigerator, or bathroom with them, though. It just seems like both a waste of space and money.
I had issue with pantry moths and they get into almost anything. I got glass containers to store my food insect free. More aesthetic as well than acrylic in my view.
@@sonicbloomtuts That is definitely a much better option. And unlike the acrylic, I know that if you boil and sanitize the glass containers, they are going to be safe to continue to use for years without fear of any chemicals leaching into your foods as might happen with the plastics as they break down.
For more than a decade I've decanted all dry goods into 1 liter recycled glass jars that I ask my local bar to put aside for me. My problem was flour moths.
@@MaryDalton64 We keep food /cat food / sugar/ nuts....in leftover peanut butter jars, pickle jars, anything.... nothing special, cheap not pretty, who cares? If people look in my pantry and don't like it too bad! lol.
Fantastic video. I love “rant” Nick! My friend works in food packing and product safety and she told me to keep milk products fresh, only buy and store in opaque packaging. If you can see the milk the vitamins are degrading every time light hits it. So the cardboard container is best. For the summer I do make fancy ice for drinks in the pool BUT I have one large cube tray and one small/medium cube tray. I take the cubes and store them in a freezer bag, so I don’t need 10 trays 🙄
You are my FAVOURITE person - I LIVE for your moods and love your honesty here. And THANK YOU for explaining affiliated links and commissions - that makes most of the NONSENSE acrylic videos make sooooo much more sense
'All that glitters is not gold.' Just because something is trendy doesn't make it valuable. Your authenticity is refreshing in a world driven by consumerism. It's great to see someone prioritize genuine content over profit. Keep up the great work; many appreciate your honesty and the comfort of a real, lived-in home. Stay true to yourself!
Same with me. And I also use the water dispensers because I have a 5 month old that regularly needs distilled water. I don't boil tap water for her milk.
I am so glad you classigied the acrylic trays with "if they are durable, and you are going to use them" I was using them before they became an influencer trend to corral and contain things in my bathroom, pantry and kitchen. But I would never buy without purpose and have been known to create and replace cardboard stand ins until I find the right size and shape, sometimes for months.
I’ve been using those supermarket cardboard boxes (that they keep lying around when the product is sold out) in my pantry for years now. Didn’t even occur to switch. It’s not that effective but I like it. 😂
Same. I just got some egg holder because of how I buy eggs. The big cardboard packages with the plastic wrap only were a big space taker. The eggs are easier to reach now and there's some more space in the fridge
I detest the taking things that come in packaging and putting them into other packaging trend. Who has the time?! I gotta go to the grocery store, unpack my groceries, put them in other things, then clean up the mess of putting a thing that came in a thing into another thing. And then I gotta wash the thing that I put the things into so I can do it all again? Oh no no no. It's an endless cycle of packing, repackaging, and washing.
I do use containers to protect pasta or rice against bugs.. but i agree this trend is stupid and so useless. What else could you expect from Tik Tok..?
Sometimes it’s necessary. Like, I get some salami and cheese slices semi regularly and they come on plastic trays with those films you’re supposed to be able to readhere. But they don’t properly. So those go into tupperware. I also have some squeeze bottles that make applying sauces and syrups easier. But milk and juice and yoghurt and tubs of spread and jars of jam and so on and so forth? Nah. What’s the point? These people are chasing the aesthetic of home made and locally sourced goods while going to the same big chain shops as the rest of us.
I saw an ad recently push plastic water bottles as being the best choice for the environment. If you're going to get drinks in some sort of a container, aluminum is by far the best for the environment. Nearly all of the damage that's done from using aluminum comes from the initial mining, once it's been mined, it can be melted and remelted almost forever with very little lost in the process. There's a tiny amount of plastic on the inside, but most of it is aluminum. Each time you recycle an aluminum container the amount of damage to the environment per container reduces until it's just the literal energy to melt the container down for recycling and the energy to reform it in the desired size. Those mostly spherical cans are even more impressive in terms of the reduction in material.
Well, this may not have been your intention, But you made me laugh this morning. “21 US dollars!? Not in this economy!“ You are in a mood. I hope your day gets better. 😘
tap water all the way. For the juice cartons, in Poland you can go to a grocery store (several chains) and squeeze juice there to a bottle. This would make sense - you bring your own bottle instead of the one offered in store that you will throw away
A win-win-win for the aesthetic pantry lovers out there: use thrifted glass mason jars of various sizes to hold bulk-bought dry goods instead of packaged goods in plastic containers. Healthier, cheaper, and still aesthetic. Bonus if you use reusable bags to buy the bulk items, and remember to affix a label on the back or bottom of each jar with the purchase date so you'll know when to replace any unused portion!
Agreed! I just need to find some dark/amber tinted jars or cover them in some way, maybe with fabric or masking tape, to prevent the light from getting in and degrading photosensitive products.
If you mix acrylic paint with pva glue you can paint a glass jar. Not sure how washable it would be but worth a try. I only wipe out jars after rice, flour, nuts etc. @tfnvv5469
One additional note on the acrylic organizers is, as someone with ADHD, it's like my brain refuses to accept object permanence. If I can't see it, I won't remember I have it, and with food especially, that means a lot of wasted food and money. But on the flip side, seeing too much is overstimulating and I won't see the forest for the trees. So there's a balance. I use a mixed system of opaque storage with easy-to-read labels, and clear storage to help maximize my brain's ability to function.
We do the same for our adult son who is non-verbal autistic. It makes his life easier when he can see what there is in pantry and fridge, and how much there is. Of course, we've been doing this since he was very young (he's 30 now) so we were ahead of the "influencers"?
I just love how people who shame me for having a plastic drinking straw can't wait to show me how great their acrylic fridge looks! I love how you illustrated the waste of the original sterile container.
We bought a box of plastic straws for a birthday party shortly after we moved to our house in 2000. 24 years later, we're still using that same box, having only thrown out about half of them from being truly worn out. The rest get washed, dried, and reused. I like to say that these unassuming plastic straws have probably seen more actual reuse than all my friends' new metal and glass versions.
@@Kira_MartelThat’s exactly what we do. I stick them in the dishwasher after each use. They eventually wear out and split, but you can get a LOT of uses out of a “single use” plastic straw.
Oh, Nick, I LOVE YOU! Thank you for being real about all of this acrylic junk. A few years ago, I bought some very expensive acrylic refrigerator organizers because we gutted our old kitchen, and I wanted to have the “perfect kitchen”. Everything looked great until i had more product than room in these containers, so I stuck it all in the wide drawer, I.e., the graveyard. Then I put two of them in the dishwasher. GAME OVER!!! They both warped, and I had to toss them away. Just use your fridge, clean it when it dirty, and forget the rest!
I use a few of those acrylic bins to essentially make mini drawers in the fridge. One for butter, yogurt, sour cream. One for cheeses, one for fruit. It keeps everything for being a big jumble in the fridge, it’s not for looks. I don’t invite people over to admire my fridge too often 😂
Same situation here - mice are bad enough without them chewing into your pantry items. I use a lot of "the good plastic" from Costco, which environmentally they are phasing out. Pretzel jars, animal cracker jars, mixed nut jars, ... Canning jars are good but not that large! These items are all in a pantry so the look doesn't matter. Degree of mouseproofness does. I haven't had actual mice in my living guarters for 4 years, but I never want them again.
Yeah. Growing up we did this too. Or any BIG jar ((like the huge pickle ones)) ... all jars were basically Washed and re used. Theres a difference when it's Necessity verses just Appearance Sake. Just the other day, we had a leak, and some of the pantry things we had here were still in bags/boxes ... those bags and boxes didn't hold up to it. It happens sometimes. But you don't necessarily need to buy a $20 jar that looks pretty... when an old pickle jar you finished eating, and cleaned completely... Works just as well AND you didn't have to pay extra for it. ((since you bought it for the pickles, not necessarily storage))
See mason jars on a farm make perfect sense!!! But why did the rest of us “need” them? And why do people suddenly “need” cowboy boots even if they’re like me and a) aren’t american and b) live in a city? Likewise a coastal grandmother or mermaidcore aesthetic is unlikely to last if you don’t even live near a beach. I really think where people either live or are from should be a point of consideration!
@653j521 the reason why they are printed on packaging is because food safety is important. Many people travel, or work irregular schedules, or have inconsistent food purchase schedules. Also, no one cares what the inside of the fridge looks like.
Yes, the "best by"/expiration dates. Also lot #s (for recalls), nutrition info, and ingredients (especially important if you have a guest with allergies/food restrictions whi wants to know if whatever you are offering contains something they can't have).
I'm a decanter. Years ago I had a mouse that tormented me for months until I finally trapped him. Anyway I began decanting all my groceries into mouse proof containers when I walk into the house. I enjoy how tidy it looks and yes I do write the best by dates on chalkboard labels on the bottom of the container its not visible but is there. Granted I'm a single person, if I had a family and a huge pantry, I might not bother

9:10 My tap water isn’t safe to drink unfiltered (one of the least problematic political concerns in the US right now, unfortunately) so I installed an undersink filter exactly because of your point: I didn’t want to buy an entire separate system just for drinking water or have to refill a pitcher all the time. I just change my fridge and sink filters a few times a year and drink out of the tap. Your point still stands for those of us who need to filter our municipal water.
One note about the water dispensers, some people are on well systems and the water is heavy in sulfur and iron making it undrinkable unless filtered. So sometimes it’s easier to have 3-5 5gallon containers you swap out than paying thousands for a water filter system.
Agreed. We are on a well system and we do not drink the water or cook with it, but we use it for everything else. We reuse our 5 gal containers and use local water. It tastes much better and frankly is much safer than drinking our well water. I agree you don't need fancy weird contraptions. I am glad that he has emphasized if it is functional for you and useful beyond a few uses. I hate wasting money and throwing things away so I try not to buy such things. If I cannot donate it in the end or recycle it, we usually don't get it. Also we have a small home and fridge and sometimes I have to put things in our basement fridge or pantry until I use it and we need things to fit in our fridge, but I do not usually repackage things unless it is in the basement and we need to keep it from spoiling or getting bugs (like rice, pasta, cereal, etc.). Humidity also plays a part, but the stuff we have bought to keep stuff from spoiling gets used over and over for years.
So when people are in an area that’s on well water, why can’t they (as in the city/county/state) filter the water, in like a water treatment plant? Is it just cause it’s expensive and they don’t want to?
@@elise85391 Wells are off-grid and off the town's water system. People using a well are paying for and putting in their own pumps to get water from underground on their own property.
Just going to add growing up with tank water in a rural area we kept an old bench-top water cooler(not that it did any colling just seemed the most appropriate noun) and the big blue water bottles because we had an electric pump system (to get water to the taps from the tank) which obviously would not work during, the unfortunately too frequent, power outages in winter. Not too annoyed with my gov's service provision on this front though, because I recognise how costly, difficult and ineffective trying to provide/reliably maintain and quickly fix these services in rural areas is. But yes I agree, drinkable tap water in urban areas in wealthy countries should be a given. We also had an under-the-sink filter in the kitchen for drinking water, but as you can probably guess, that was no use during a power outage.
Nick, I found your channel yesterday and I'm obsessed. I love it, I love your taste, I love your logic, I love your humor. I'm addicted to you and your channel.
I'm not sure I would RECOGNIZE you without The Clock, which I fell I love with when you made fun of yourself for having a clock that always shows the same time. The Clock is a symbol that your advice is TIMELESS!
The reason I started following you is because of the functional, timeless attitude (and sass) you carry in design. The comfort of your thoughtful home background built just for you brings us joy. It is your home after all, not ours! Thank you for talking some sense in these days of “influencing” and trendy, everchanging designs. Hurray for deinfluencing crap and influencing practical, timeless beauty! Keep it up!
The knowingness that this video would be coming today was the one thing my Spirit had to look forward to when I laid my head down upon my pillow last night. thank you Nick for your comments on our ridiculous consumerism. Good design and happy interior spaces does not mean constant purchasing of stuff. Thanks.
THANK 👏🏼 YOU 👏🏼 I mean, I was seeing a LOT of ads for plastic containers to put your food in and have an aesthetically pleasing fridge but who cares?? And I almost got caught in it. Thinking of the additional amount of work it would require to stuff the fridge and then clean everything saved me. But you just helped me got rid of the last tiny thought that still wanted a pretty fridge so THANK YOU for that!
Some comedian once said that Canadians think they're passive aggressive, but in America we just call it "being polite". This is an entertaining, informative and very polite video. Special kudos to Nick for making an emphasis on the lack of necessity of plastic trays.
Thank you for sticking to your ethics and being realistic with your audience by living like the rest of us and standing by your design style! Not “influencing us or giving into our influencing requests”. Great insight!
I've always respected you, but your level of self-awareness in this video supported by the intentional lack of a sponsor to clearly make your point is admirable and makes me respect you that much more.

On plastic organizers: when I was growing up my dad always used to say that you didn't need more organization, you need less stuff
I needed this advice, actually. Thanks!

I literally love you for the "shouldn't your government be paying for you to have good drinking water?" Yes!!!! Bravo to this!! 🙌🏻
I mean... at the very least they should do this.
I feel like after what happened in Flint, MI, people in the US are more wary of drinking from their taps regardless of where they live.
In Finland literally, mineral water comes from the tap 😅 it’s safer to drink in Finland from the tap than drink bottled water from the USA 😢
Sadly "the government" doesn't do their job. WHY should they? The employees make more money to get paid off, and collect a paycheck.
I agree, now I know it isn’t working it makes me smile each time I see it in a video. 😂
Yes I love your background. But I guess it’s like-everything was fine today…is not news lol
I also have a clock hanging in my living room, except mine stopped telling time well over five years ago. I guess now I can pass it off as an aesthetic design choice?
I adore that clock. Nick don't apologize for having set up your space in the way that is best for you.
Same here. I have a clock that reads the same time as well so I know he keeps it because of a certain connection, which helps me connect with him.

Those videos are my imagination of torture videos for me😂
Like nazi could torture me by playing those videos on loop😂
Oh well.
Nick, don't apologize for your 'angry' mood. I've never laughed so hard. I agree with you - we don't need more stuff.

Another big problem with pouring your acidic orange juice and coffee (And especially soda) into new containers is that the brand packaging has specialized coatings on the inside to protect the product from spoiling.
And it was sterilized and sealed in that packaging when you bought it. So he was right about the introducing new bacteria!

It's not only the best-before-date you lose when you transfer juice and stuff into those sensless plastic containers. You also have to drink everything in only a few days because it has already been opened. You can't really store it anymore. You don't reduce waste and you have to wash the containers every single time...
God yeah that's true! it seems to skate over the fact that you still have as much waste at the end of things although now it's out of sight
My first thought was how do you remember what's in which container? Second thought was WHY?!? Just WHY??

My mom used them for crayons.
Kathy B
The problem with re-using older containers for stuff like flour is that you have to be absolutely certain you cleaned them out properly. Imagine a cake or pie baked with brad that was in an improperly cleaned out bin of cheese balls.
That's not to say those plastic tubs aren't useful. I have....probably more pretzel tubs than I should. I use them for storing craft supplies. When you need a place to keep 20 lbs of jump rings together, they're hard to beat!
Exactly
Yes!
Ditto what you said!
I need photos of your useful set up in your fridge!!! I'd ❤ to see how nice it all really looks!😃
Yes that's good, although that's not what he's down on.
I have the same type of organizers in the fridge. When something leaks, so easy to cleanup! Also easy to get stuff in the back. I’ve noticed that I no longer have things stuck in the back that expires.
Thats functional, not just aesthetics. I’m in the process of doing this ❤
I bought some, too, for the fridge and the cabinets.
I find them to keep some rubbish trash I use once a year and wham it goes into my store room ❤

I try to buy them in a color that I can tolerate the longest too.

Some people like their fridge to be organized.

I bought a couple from a box store because I actually like those cubes. Certainly not for the 'gram.
After working in a restaurant for years there are two fridge containers that I use at home and make sense to me:
- A full size Cambro where all the defrosting meat lives - this prevents cross contamination when the packages leak
- A smaller container for all the lunchmeat and cheese so I can pull out a single container when prepping a sandwich or salad instead of hunting down all the different ingredients that get scattered all over the shelf when left to their own volition
I hope the other meat isn't cross-contaminated. Yeah, my fridge has a small drawer that I use for the sandwich stuff.
Perfect.
@@ChronicallyHopefulChar I rent and the fridge is small. I leave the meat in the package wrapped with a produce bag , and a double-layer paper towel underneath, on the bottom shelf.

Agreed! My state government (Indiana), which is under a Republican supermajority for more than 20 years, actually was trying to declassify PFAS (the "forever" chemicals from plastics) and reclassify them as NON-toxic!! Luckily it failed, but they will try again, I know. They are literally trying to poison their own citizens here. Anyway, love ya, Nick! And Go Canada!

Cute yeen
Came here to pretty much day the same thing!
they have them at the dollar store

Yes, I don't subscribe to people that are constantly changing their homes. It is so wasteful.
I miss old youtube I am so sick of everyone just trying to get rich. There is no substance here anymore.

@@divad1818 ok promo
One place I see repackaging as useful is in the pantry. Especially with a small family size or individual as a household, buying in bulk or anything that doesn't properly re-seal can go into a container better suited for long term storage (flour, sugar, pastas, nuts, etc).
Also if you have limited storage space being able to organize upwards (on taller shelves) without burying stuff under other stuff or having imminent collapse of random boxes when you open the door can be very useful. But you have to go in knowing what genuinely needs restoring in something else and have the habit of using that storage.

I personally love the creative ice cubes. If you regularly host people you will understand how much people appreciate it!!
Same with me. And I also use the water dispensers because I have a 5 month old that regularly needs distilled water. I don't boil tap water for her milk.
@@lagnarowk2298 Why would your baby of 5 month need distilled water for her milk? Just curious.
The only things I do that with are bulk items I buy in thin bags with twisty-ties. And my plastic containers (but one is glass) are twenty years old.
I'm just trying to keep the leaked salad dressing from running down the back of the shelves.
Yes! Exactly! And if the volume isn't just right, then you have bits leftover in original packaging that now needs a storage space too. So wasteful!
This video on this topic is so necessary! Less plastic, less consumption and more common sense (I know, the last one is a stretchy term).
This is why I follow you. You’re honest and you show us that practicality. Creating a beautiful home practically.
Nick was drinking the tea and also spilling the tea and keeping it real. Kudos to you, Nick for the honesty and the reality check! ✌
Well, this may not have been your intention, But you made me laugh this morning. “21 US dollars!? Not in this economy!“ You are in a mood. I hope your day gets better. 😘
I feel like everything nowadays is $20 I’m like what the heck happened, $20 is with cheap crap now. No wonder people can’t afford anything
tap water all the way.
@tfnvv5469
I love my space the way it is, it’s really beautiful and maybe not in fashion, I don’t care. Thanks Nick👍
100% this.
Saaaame. It makes everything easier for my brain to compartmentalize and process. It's like folders for my food.
object permanence. The struggle is real.
I just love how people who shame me for having a plastic drinking straw can't wait to show me how great their acrylic fridge looks! I love how you illustrated the waste of the original sterile container.
Amen. But even in the far side of the world (South Africa) our shops all give out paper (degradable), rather than plastic, straws.
There's a difference between single and multi use plastics huge difference
If most ppl used plastic straws like that I don't think there'd be a hate on for plastic straws
Same i have 2 small plastic bins just to separate things in the fridge on 1 shelf. Fruit in one cheese and yoghurts in the other.
I like this idea, if all your door shelves are full, being able to keep the larger items in their own category makes it easier to find.
A few fridge or pantry bins makes sense and is functional, but having everything in matching clear containers just because is dumb
I swear they have less drawers every time I have to buy a new fridge
I live on a farm, we always have to guard against mice. Instead of acrylic storage we use Nick's favorite - MASON JARS ;)
But also, you actually live on the farm. I think Nick probably would be fine with you using mason jars. 😂
I never thought about the "best by" dates on the packaging being lost when decanting fridge acrylics. I'm glad I never bought any of those now.
You could just use them in a reasonable period of time and you'll be fine.
Then you also has to wash/clean the containers to reuse, I don't want the extra work
I'm a decanter.

I just change my fridge and sink filters a few times a year and drink out of the tap. Your point still stands for those of us who need to filter our municipal water.
I think a lot of political problems in your country could come from boomers drinking from lead pipes as a child 😛
You are a breath of fresh air. I enjoy your sarcasm and honesty.
@@elise85391 some rural areas are not connected to sewage or city water supply because it’s just not conducive or the city/county won’t pay for it.
I resonate with liking your home and not wanting to change anything. I curated it to be what I want, why do I need to change it?
I'm not sure I would RECOGNIZE you without The Clock, which I fell I love with when you made fun of yourself for having a clock that always shows the same time. The Clock is a symbol that your advice is TIMELESS!
I love that your space stays the same!!! Youre the ONLY interior designer I watch because of your general aversion to junk and hyperseasonality.
You do so much more than share wit and snark-laced decor and design rhetoric. Nick, your presence, humor, and personable energy momentarily allay my every heavy sorrow. 🖤
Nick is the one channel I watch every week and like you, I know when I go to bed on Friday, I'll get to watch Nick the next day.
thank you Nick for your comments on our ridiculous consumerism.
But you just helped me got rid of the last tiny thought that still wanted a pretty fridge so THANK YOU for that!
watching this makes me feel like im talking to / listening to a friend 😭i love it !! your content just feels REAL and GENUINE
Loved the honesty in this video! Also, now I understand why I get SO many “best things to buy on Amazon” videos on my feed
Spicy Nick is the best kind of Nick
Some comedian once said that Canadians think they're passive aggressive, but in America we just call it "being polite". This is an entertaining, informative and very polite video. Special kudos to Nick for making an emphasis on the lack of necessity of plastic trays.
Thank you for sticking to your ethics and being realistic with your audience by living like the rest of us and standing by your design style! Not “influencing us or giving into our influencing requests”. Great insight!
I've always respected you, but your level of self-awareness in this video supported by the intentional lack of a sponsor to clearly make your point is admirable and makes me respect you that much more.
oh nick ... your super power is your honesty & integrity. We all love you for it. Like really- it's so rare & refreshing. Thanks for never being a sell-out! Keep up the good work
I'm so happy that I'm seeing more and more videos like this. Influencers making content just so they can shove an Amazon link in everyone's faces is getting ridiculous
Love you and your waste not want not rant. Not enough words to express how this is needed in our society. Shame on Amazon and influencers that encourage over consumption.
Excellent episode. For me, Tupperware has stood the test. I am still using the same pantry storage system for OVER 40 years!
