So, by this point, with Tool being one of my favorite bands/artists, I get a little hesitant with each new release in case they finally release one I don't like. So I went into this one with a little trepidation. Not sure how it didn't grab me on my first listen. I didn't dislike it but I didn't get hooked quite as fast as I did with the other albums. I was driving from St. Louis to the Atlanta area, and decided to really listen to the album on the drive and man how my opinion changed once I started actually listening and hearing the various songs. I really find they are still at their peak on this album and absolutely think it is exceptionally good.
I still think tool should have written the song for bill and Ted that unites the universe. I was wholy unimpressed by the song at the end of the new bill and Ted's movie.
This this and Culling voices are the two best songs on the album but most people overlooked them initially. I listened to this album almost non stop a few days before the album was released because I was travelling for 40 hours and had no other music with me ... not that I minded. Then a week later did the same back home. By the time people had listened to it a few times I had listened hundreds and trying to get people to even pay attention to this album (the regular "the new tool album sucks" rhetoric) let alone Descending was an uphill battle.
Oh yes Descending amazing. According to the musicians Danny Carey on drums, Adam Jones guitar and Justin Chancellor bass that's basically how they write songs. They jam together for hours, pick up ideas, work on them. But essentially tousands of hours of jamming together. So they write the music first and don't give it to the singer until it's finished. Only then the singer Maynard J. Keenan writes the lyrics to the music. That's part of why they tend to take a looong time writing their albums. And you can hear the unique attention for details. Enjoy!
Here's Danny touching on this in an interview with Kerrang! : “It wasn’t just what he was singing, but what he didn’t sing. The spaces that he left, to let these compositions we’d worked our heart and soul out on shine. It was the ultimate compliment. It made me feel that we’re the musketeers again - we’re a fucking band again!"
They played this one and Invincible in Amsterdam 2019, before the album dropped. Just an outstanding performance from one of the greatest bands that has ever walked this earth🥳
I had a similar experience a *long* time ago. I saw them as an opening act for Primus at the 1995/96 New Year's Eve show. They played for more than an hour, and literally half the songs were from Aenima, which wouldn't be released until September of 1996. So we were literally some of the first people *anywhere* to hear some of the songs. Remains the single best show I've ever been to in my life. Then, even after Tool was done, we had a near 2 hour set of Primus coming up for us to ring in the new year. Absolutely *epic*, in every sense of the word. Someone just recently actually put that Tool set up on TH-cam. So, if you want to experience it vicariously (pun intended, lol) here's the link: th-cam.com/video/t_nFCRJ4rqg/w-d-xo.html
Totally agree about the Pink Floyd reference John. I am a big Floyd fan since the mid 80s and Tool has always struck me as one of their successors; not necessarily in sound but in being themselves, unlike anyone else, evolving and unafraid to do something different within and between albums. Great reaction as ever mate. See you on the next one.
What I love most about TOOL is the progression of their maturity and growth in subject matter. From their first album Opiate to this latest of Fear Inoculum it's like experiencing the ascent of a primal energy to spiritual. That's what I find most intriguing about TOOL is their ability to elevate the moment and take you on a journey you were in no way prepared for. Just opening that door we did not realize was closed.
Here's how good your reaction videos are. Because i know the songs so well, i usually watch at 1.5x speed just to see all the different reactions of people. With yours however, i watch at normal speed because it feels like we're sitting listening as friends experiencing this together. Well done. Well done
this song guts me every time. It's my favorite on the new album. Danny has said they have a LOT of stuff that they haven't released yet. He and Justin do a TON of jamming together along with Adam before Maynard even gets to put down lyrics for it. He waits for them to be happy with the song so he can then interpret it into poetry.
I've always thought Adam plays guitar similarly to Gilmour. Its extremely expressive and melodic, and the tone/texture is always very carefully constructed. And he knows how to slip in and slip out of the spotlight really well. Love Descending, it picks up on some of the hallmark sounds found in other great tool songs like Reflection, Lateralus, and yet still has its own unique quality.
The similarity to Gilmour is definitely there. Instead of milking a lick, they have the control to slow it down and milk each note. Tool is one of the few bands that feels like a orchestrated group without a actual orchestrator.
I started playing guitar because of this album. I've always been a fan of music but this album made me realize you don't have to shred or write the most complex riffs in history to create an atmosphere and fill it with emotion. Truly a deep and important album for me so seeing him go through album is like a second rush of excitement for me
It's a pleasure re-discovering the album with such a good driver at the wheel pointing out details I may have missed even though this album has been in constant rotation for me for the past two years.
I can’t wait to see you go through Culling Voices. To me it’s kinda the dark horse on the album - a sleeper. So many good tracks that people often don’t mention this one but it will blow your head off if you’re not prepared.
And they played it live on the last tour. Danny starts playing the rhythm guitar part, then hops to the kit when the drums come in. They sit in a semi-circle in the middle of the stage for the first part. ❤
This song is truly a masterpiece and an incredibly powerful piece of music. The thing that I find most fascinating about it is that the title and the lyrics are opposite how the song is structured. What I mean by that is that the instruments are seemingly always climbing or ascending as one from the beginning all the way to the climax at the end of the song. When I listen to it, I feel as if the piece is being carried along by these huge swells of sound building and building, one note on top another, this massive wall of incredible music. Yet never descending as the title and lyrics would possibly indicate. That my friends, is the mastery that is TOOL.
People may say their songs are too long. I said they’re not long enough. They are some songs I wish they would never end. Great reacting I like your perspective.
Really great reaction/analysis video. I think one of the things that gets left out of the praise Tool gets too often is just how good their producer is. The audio mix is amazing and really creates a three dimensional landscape when you listen with the proper audio setup, be it surround sound or decent headphones.
This song was my initial favorite off this album on my first listen. The jam session gave me incredible goose bumps and still does. You should hear Adam Jones "The Witness" song he did for Gibson. It's Tool minus Maynard and the instruments are amazing
I never get tired of watching Tool reaction videos. Makes my heart so happy, especially brand newbies, but all of them or great. I've never seen a bad review. Tool IS the transcendental experience! 🎶 💫💥
I've been really into this lately. I always felt like Adam Jones was a great guitarist, despite being so low-key. It was great to hear him get to really blow it out there. Your analyses are really great to listen to. I know that you said that you've listened to Tool before Fear Innoculum, but it would be fun to see your analyses of some of their other stuff. Just saying 😉
I've heard Adam Jones describe himself as "not a guitarist, but a cinematographer". It was a reference to the fact his primary job was actually in the movies before forming Tool, but it is actually a great way to describe his approach to creating music. Jones plays his instrument like he's creating a cinematic soundscape, everything he does is in service to the big picture. He's no virtuoso, but his approach to composition is genius and uniquely his. He's virtually impossible to imitate and Tool cannot exist without him.
So based on a recent interview with Danny Carrey by Rick Beato, your comments about it sound like a "jam" are 100% correctly. Danny said they spend most of their time jamming and they record it all and then they'll go back and listen through the jams and pick out the gems and what works what doesn't then use that as building blocks for songs.
Its awesome to see how you pay attention to the subtle things, I've listened this álbum since it came out and In still find little hideen gems in each instrument also thank you for linking two of my favorite things together, Tool and Alien movies!
Fantastic intro, great reaction! Descending is tons of fun to count, with the 7, then a 9 tossed in just to chorus an 11! Would enjoy to see your take on Lateralus album.
The man in the beginning of the video merely heard the sound of wind. Proceeds to analyze and mentions aliens and foreign planets. This is what Tool does to people. Sounds like wind on “Mars”. No way wind on Earth sounds like that
Psychadelic-proggy-Thin Lizzy for the sub!!! Also "wtf hand-gestures" are reminding me why I love this album so much! Your response to Tool's music is satisfactory!
IMO, Descending is one of the most beautiful and stunning pieces of music ever written. Of any genre. And my 2nd favorite Tool song… today, at least. 😆 Nothin’ can ever beat Wings/10,000 Days for me. But 2nd changes. Great video. Subbed!
TOOL is a band where the individual parts that are made up by each constituent band member are so perfectly integrated with the other band member's parts. I have never seen such a perfectly functional relationship like this before where no one sticks out like a sore thumb and the net results are, perfect or near perfect songs. Especially, this song!
I'm sure you have been told by someone by now, but Maynard doesn't see himself as a frontman. He sees his voice as just a part of the band. Another instrument.
Any music that instead of making the listener a passive receiver, that instead actively recruits you imagination and intelligence to think about what you are hearing, is in my opinion the definition of greatness, or genius, or whatever you personally want to term it. We can just go with special. 👍
The more I listen to this without a doubt... it ages like a very old, distinguished whiskey. Prometheus is the movie & it actually makes sense relating the 2 haha.
Thanks for sharing your journey with us but I have to bid farewell. I cant seem to get past descending & I'd rather experience this album in my own time. To put this bs comment in perspective, I only came across reflections last year haha! Wish you all the best with your channel JW! I would love to see your reaction to songs off earlier albums, maybe your top 5? Anyways, Merry Christmas sending positive vibes from New Zealand to you & yours✌😁🤘
Abseloutely brilliant reaction, u keep it moving so smoothly, a beautiful majestic brooding beast of a song , genius of TOOL, I welled up with joy before to the 2nd and last guitar solo during a 2nd and subsequent listens... Greetings from cork
Love watching your journey through this album. It's nice to wake up and see another one of your videos. So, hello from Fargo, ND! One of these years I'll be heading your direction to see my mother land!
@@grimmrepoe - Concur, I play XCOM with this album running and it's a natural fitting soundtrack. Fear Innoculum's intro to a troop carrier lift off? Yes please. And Descending just oozes Epic Scifi Saga.
Hey John, great reaction as always ! Once again you have a good analysis of the song though it's your first listen ! Descending or the importance of having earphones when listening to TOOL, as you noticed. For me, it's a phenomenal piece of music and one of the greatest TOOL songs and one of the greatest songs ever written. Such a journey. Such a buildup. The climax on Descending hits real hard. At least for me. You will definitely need to have several listens of Descending and I would say the whole album in it's entirety to fully take in and grasp it all. It took me at least a dozen listens to fully grasp, each song. But as I was trying to learn each song of the album on the guitar I needed to know every single section. Hope that you enjoyed it and the power of each song off of Fear Inoculum will fully unlock itself when you listen to each song a dozen times. Keep it up !
A great reaction from a serious musician. I remember discovering Tool’s Lateralus as a 16 year old. I would not have the pallet or knowledge of music I know now if it weren’t for TOOL sparking my interest. Because of them I ventured into all the classic prog and progressive jazz, obscure electronic music, world Indian classical etc been devouring and enriching my life with music for past 20 years. If it weren’t for lateralus I’d still be listening to the radio most likely so thanks TOOL :)
I hear Maynard's angelic voice and Justin's bass at the beginning in total sync warming things up, then of course Danny and Adam killing it setting up for the Grande finale
I never comment on youtube i just dont i have my real life. But i havent found a youtuber that encapsulates such a musical knowledge as yourself. Its very refreshing to watch someone who points out exactly what i am drawn too.Definitely a subscriber now. Peace and love to you and yours.
With this one I feel it's a pretty direct call to arms on climate change. Heedless in our slumber, madness of our own making. Human voice stops pretty abruptly half way through and rest is just other instruments speaking the part of nature. In the end it's just water again
Adam Jones is such a criminally underrated guitarist. Always playing for the song and not for the shine.... but he still finds ways to shine on every album, even if it isn't in a conventional way. Here's another suggestion for Familiarity (any live version) by Punch Brothers. I'm only being annoying about it because I feel strongly that you will enjoy it. Cheers!
🎵🎸Moody, atmospheric, instrumental, one-man-band prog? Right this way 👇

This one gives me a real "Eulogy" sequel vibe. In a good way though. Same with "" pneuma" a sequel to "lateralus".
I really really pity the fans who aren't into this album. I hope one day they find themselves in love with it too because it is absolutely epic.
Yes!!!
What fan isn't into this album??? I suppose I don't browse any tool boards or anything, but all of my peers fucking love this album.
It took me a couple of tries. I realized I was trying to hear what I wanted to hear and not what I needed to hear. Now I absolutely adore it.
I'm biased to it because it was the album that introduced me to Tool
So, by this point, with Tool being one of my favorite bands/artists, I get a little hesitant with each new release in case they finally release one I don't like. "sound the dread alarm" still gives me chills, and the whole verse that follows. So powerful
Same. Most powerful and goosebump invoking passage on the album
Stay alive!
Through the primal body…
You said you "got vibes of 11 there" right at 11:11 in your video, which is maybe the most Tool thing ever lol
Hahahahaha - 💯
This song makes me cry nearly every time. Not because I’m sad, it’s because I can’t believe what my ears are hearing.
the same.... how it's beautiful.. idk
Same here, it’s embarrassing sometimes lmao
totally understand this :')
I've never known another band whose otherworldly brilliance will literally bring me to tears.
You described it wonderfully
Been a die hard fan for 27 years this is the greatest song I've ever heard
Ah yes. The greatest song ever written.
So true
How such a dire message for humanity can sound so achingly, majestically resolute and beautiful...wow. Just a masterpiece.
I still think tool should have written the song for bill and Ted that unites the universe. I was wholy unimpressed by the song at the end of the new bill and Ted's movie.
That's TOOL in general for me.
By far the best comment 👏👏👏
Speaking of Floyd. I would love to hear Gilmour and Roger's takes on Tool!!!

The true gem of Fear Inoculum, absolutely stunning piece of music.

The best among a pile of gems.
For me it's Invincible, Pneuma, and Descending.
Revising my comment. As I play this video I can say Descending is my favorite. Any of those three is my favorite at the time I'm listening to it :'D
@@angelcarrion2042 Those three are the peaks of the album for sure.

Adam is absolutely beast mode on this track. He went to another level . Incredible.
Thank you very much, Steven! 🤘Have a happy new year, dude.
Fun fact. When you said "Slide guitar" adam is playing through 5 different heads (amplifiers to the lay person)
With this one I feel it's a pretty direct call to arms on climate change. Heedless in our slumber, madness of our own making. Human voice stops pretty abruptly half way through and rest is just other instruments speaking the part of nature. In the end it's just water again
Adam was FX for Aliens i think.
That's a bad ass intro THANK YOU!
great job on this one
Envious of your talents...lots of hard work put in.
Cheers!
The Sound at 9.35 of the Song instantly reminded me of Rosetta Stoned one of my absolute favorite Songs of Tool :)
👍👍👍Best of luck to this kid and his family for all the years dedicated to the sport!!!
This song gives me a thought of Erwin giving his last speech in attack on Titan before his final war charge. Just the vibes immediately attached.
