    During the middle section 10:40, he goes from using 5 drums, down to 4, 3 then finally 2 before the end of the section. It creates a build up you don't consciously feel. Genius.

    His snare is made by VK drums and is 14"×8" made of cast bronze and weighs 44lbs. A little info on his Mandala pads they have 128 strike points arranged in 7 concentric circle zones with each zone able to be programmed tonally individually. He also uses a Korg KD-1 wave drum that he has programmed to give the sound of a tabla. The keyboard instrument above his 40" Paiste symphonic gong is called a Marimba Lumina, you'll be able to hear it being played in Invincible. Probably more info then you wanted.🤣 Really enjoying your reaction since I've found you. Will definitely be back for more.✌🤘

      And he plays it like it's nothing - a walk in the park. His doubles slay me with their perfection. I started playing drums a year and a half ago, and doubles are my kryptonite.

    I love the musicality of Danny. His playing is not only physically impressive with his crazy independence, but what he chooses to play just fits the songs so well. We couldn’t imagine Tool without Danny just like Zeppelin without Bonzo. Not true for most bands… would anyone notice or care if say Bon Jovi changed drummers? I know I wouldn’t, but maybe that’s just me.

    • @Marnee4191
      @Marnee4191 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      All of the bands I love would definitely not be the same without the drummer. Maybe that's why - when I finally decided to learn to play an instrument as an adult - that I chose the drums. Any band where the drummer is interchangeable is not a band I like - with probably a few exceptions.

  • @onestitate
    @onestitate 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    It sometimes almost feels like Tool has a rhythm singer and a lead drummer. That's what I love about this band, every member is an individual with an own mind and sometimes it almost feels like they are dragging the listener into four different directions, and just before you feel like it's falling apart, they come together again.

    • @bruun1974
      @bruun1974 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's jazz-like really! Each musician doing their own thing rythm count wise, that would throw off most mortal musicians and then Danny who manages 4 time different time signatures, one for each limb. How the F does that even work inside his brain...

    • @Marnee4191
      @Marnee4191 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I saw a comment here on TH-cam somewhere that said something like In Tool, all the band members are doing a solo, all at once, and somehow make it work.

    He's the metal version of Bill Bruford, one of his influences. Bill used to mix electronic with acoustic drums, Rototoms and various percussion, and in his last years with Earthworks played a center hi-hat.

  • @crystalscolza1663
    @crystalscolza1663 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I love how it seems like he's just jamming out, but there is a circular movement to the whole thing he spreads out with the doubles on almost every drum in his peripherals and as it starts coming to its Crescendo you start seeing him come back to Center he starts with just one note on that drum right in front of him and then he starts coming in more and more incorporating the drums directly in front of him until it's time for the full boom.

      @@Marnee4191 This show was 4 1/2 years ago (holy shit, where has the time gone??) so I don’t recall exactly; but his drum set is elevated above the main level of the stage, plus his kit as you know is massive. I could see enough to tell he was wearing a Celtics jersey. After intermission he comes back out in a Lakers jersey and plays it up to the Boston crowd, haha. I did see Danny, Justin, and Adam prior to the show after they did sound check. Oh and many years ago I met Danny at a Pigmy Love Circus show in Boston at a local club. That was a lot of fun. For the final song they had everyone jump on the stage and dance around with the band.

    Recently found you via Tool reaction, analysis, decomposition etc. As a musical enthusiast and mathematically oriented lurker, have to say your rich experienced introspective lends such great depth to the fabric of what Tool weaves seemingly effortlessly.
    Your honest reactions are eye watering to us as well, keep it up; never be embarrassed PLEASE. Thing is, you capture the essence of what us neophytes are experiencing, cleverly explaining it. Your explanations are just as succinct and direct as Tool is in their arrangements.
    Keep it going, and looking forward to exploring your channel. You have ridiculous talent and it shows in your explanations. (As a Shakespearian aside, looking for Miles Davis, Coltrane, old Sabbath, Zeppelin what have ya. Greetings from NZ)

    Love that you do analysis of songs. It is a much richer video than just reactions like some other channels. Always fun to watch someone else who is a musical fan first and foremost.
    There are a couple bands I would love to see you breakdown that would be new to the channel. Album versions are probably best:
    Thank You Scientist - Jazz fusion band. "Feed the horses" is a popular one.
    Death - As a metal fan you have probably heard them before. I think their final album is best. Would be great if you can analyze "Spirit Crusher" or "Flesh and the power it holds."
    Deftones - "Passenger" is one of my favorites. Love the chorus in this song. Great melody to it, great build up, and interesting lyrics.

A couple of suggestions if you want to delve into the heavier prog stuff, assuming you haven't heard these before (either for reaction of just personal enjoyment) - The new Rivers of Nihil album > the Work, Slice the Cake's epic concept album (very Lord of the rings) > Odyssey to the West, The Ocean's three album series charting the geological ages of the earth > Pelagial & Phanerozoic I & II and Wilderun's 2019 album > Veil of Imagination. Enjoy and keep up the great work.

    I love your reaction channel, and humbly offer this piece of nomenclature. At about the 11:37 mark you mention double strokes...he's been using what's called a Swiss Triplet for nearly this entire section.
    I started drumming when I was 12. I toured for a few years with a Latin jazz ensemble after high school. I'm still learning how to make an acoustic guitar sound good while playing Pneuma. It's a lifelong pursuit I suspect. Thank you again for your posts here.

    Just in case no one has said it, that's likely Danny's signature snare drum, made for him by Sonar (14" wide by 8" deep). Consumers can buy this snare drum. So if you want to look it up on the internet, I'm sure you can find a picture of it out there, if you want to see what it looks like. It's so beautiful!

    One of the more impressive things about danny/this song is that all the drum pads are programmed with different sounds. Up to 4 different sounds on each pad and he has to hit them in the right spot in order to get the sound he wants...He does it effortlessly without even looking. Amazing

    Danny Carry is a master! Poetry in motion…. For me Luke Holland (so young… so good could very well become the next up and coming master) Danny Carry his entire body seems to breathe into the next beat flawlessly! As a trained musician it’s easy to recognize greatness in others when you know they have a gift you could never attain no matter how hard you worked! I have seen this so many times and as a musician it’s was a very long time ago I realized I would never be anything other than mediocre… because the greats are born with a “gift”!

    @JWSoundworks2, you should watch the rig rundown if you haven't done it by now. It's completely awesome. And the part on the reaction you said "they are channeling something"....Well, when Danny explains the drawings on the drums, it's quite clear where some of this might come from. I mean, we are transitioning to a new era and these guys are helping us gaining roots with a "fear innoculum" and saying "become Pneuma". You might not be a lyrics guy (I am a bit, given that I write a lot lol), but check the lyrics out. This seems a heavier prog than Pink Floyd with a lot of existencial human energy. It's awesome.

    He doesn't play to a click. I don't remember who it was, or which song, but I saw a YT video where the TH-camr ran a Tool song through sound software to help transcribe it. There was a definite human variance to the tempo that would not have been there if Danny played to a click.

      Same thing has been done with old Van Halen albums. The songs vary in tempo.

    Danny Carey has picked up the torch from Neal Peart as the Drummer's Drummer. I hate to use absolutes like "greatest drummer alive" or GOAT, because I'm sure there are some amazing drummers out there. Still, Carey is the guy everyone just loves to watch play.

    Danny loves electronic sounds and knobs. He had a huge setup at home. Also, I know you talk about Lateralus but then you dropped off. Did you hear the album 10,000 Days from Tool?

      Yeah, I have Lateralus, Aenima and 10,000 days on cd from years ago!

    Just take all the albums and songs and put them on a dart board or archery target. Close your eyes and shoot. Whatever is hit will be a hit and it's actually that simple. Get many arrows in the quiver because you can keep shooting over and over and still hit.

    Danny Carey rubbed a genie lamp, and his first wish was to be the GOAT at drums,and the genie asked for his other 2 wishes, and he just said "nah, we're good."

    One of my biggest inconsequential disappointments in life is that they've never had a drum cam for him while playing Aenima, the best song ever written - and with the best ending of a song that ever existed. Anyway, thanks for the reaction/analysis! I do like your later videos where you do more in-depth analysis. Seems the channel is evolving for the better! But no complaints!
