If I had a dollar everytime Bandy used a defend buff move for a SPECIAL atk move I’d be rich.
Honestly, until scrolling through this comment section I forgot Harden only improves physical defense, or that it exists. Honestly Nathaniel is just playing like someone who isn't necessarily good at Pokemon, like he stated at the beginning of the video. At least he was being truthful

@@sethmichel6138 keep in mind defense boosts are from Gen 1. where there was NO special defense. which avoids this confusion. to raise you defense against special, you had to raise special.
@@user-yz2kp7vj5x Just playing devil's advocate here, he said every time Bandy did that not every time he sees him doing it on a video. These sorts of technicalities are important to ponder in case you ever get a monkey's paw or genie lamp or whatever on real life.
I hope he realizes that harden doesn't defend him against special moves.

5:15 harden only increases your defense and water pulse is a special attack. You would need a move that increases your special defense to take less damage from it, which unfortunately wasn't available during your run, given the criteria you set

Onix, uses rock tomb, a super-effective move , with a hard stone: does not even half of damage
arcanine, uses fire blast, a not effective move: almost kill onix
Just so you know because Nathaniel didn’t say it in the video (which, if he didn’t, he should’ve put it in a pinned comment, which he also hasn’t done), it’s because both Growlithe and Arcanine have Intimidate, which lowers Attack when they’re sent out.
Though considering how much damage Rock Tomb did, it’s kinda funny how a STAB, Hard Stone-boosted move wouldn’t even have been a 1HKO even after being that overleveled. Just goes to show just how much Onix sucks.

Great Run! The crit and miss brute forcing is a classic that's always fun to see.
It hurts a little bit to see someone do a challenge run without understanding the difference between special and physical attacks. That said, pokemon never explains it, and they actually changed how it worked between gen 3 and 4. Most people take for granted their in-depth knowledge of pokemon without realizing people learn it from wikis or other people. The games don't help you at all here, and you can go your entire life without ever realizing it. Case and point, this video, and many many other people.
In gen 1 through 3 (including fire red and leaf green), special and physical is decided by type. Very simplistic but also counter intuitive (i.e. Ghost is a physical type). Understanding this, in this game Harden only mitigates Onix weakness to Ground and Fighting type moves. He remains forever weak to grass and water without special defense boosting items. And I think Sandstorm counts as a sp.def buff, unless that was a gen 4-5 change.
Then starting in gen 4, physical vs special is decided on a case by case, per move, basis. Fire Punch is physical but Flamethrower is special.
Sandstorm's buff to Special Defense was a Gen 4 buff, yes.

Looks like you gave Geodude the X Attack to hold. That doesn't work unfortunately, none of the man-made items do anything when held
So Bandy a few things, good on you for trying something new!
Same type attack bonus also stacks with super effective which is why Onix and Geodude go down so hard vs Misty/Erika
Onix and Geodude have horrible Special defense which is why they go down so often, even against fire moves.
Onix’s and Geodude’s base stats are awful I’m sorry you had to deal with this, I am glad you didn’t give the rival Bulbasaur it would have been worse.
EVs are an issue in gen 3 forward... Gen 2 and Gen 1 all EVs can be maxed out. EVs can alter your Pokémon significantly. EVs are gained based on the Pokémon you have fought.
Gen 1 bide is typeless you can use it vs ghosts but absolutely do not do this, it is absolutely awful to do.
Seriously though good on you for completing this insane idea. I just hope you don’t dislike Pokémon after this.

You can actually get through Lavendar Town with only normal type moves, but you have to have no PP so you can use Struggle
This is true in fire red and leaf green, but in red blue and yellow, struggle is a normal type move, so it doesn't do anything to ghost types.

@@ale-xsantos1078 Brock didn’t have Happiny until Diamond and Pearl series. But in the Kanto series he had a vulpix (temporarily but he had it for quite a while and raised it well) and he a pinecco too. He could get away with using Onix, Geodude, Vulpix, Pinecco and Zubat evolving it Golbat and finally Crobat exactly like Brock’s team. I would only evolve the Pokémon that Brock did, have the moves Brock had and have the Pokémon Brock had in Gen 1 & 2. That way you still have a challenge while staying true to Brock’s team.

It isn't Rock tomb's issue, it's onix - onix's base attack is lower than oddish's.

Oh boy -
1) Onix's attack stat is horrible. When said that rock tomb is a "weak move" in reality the lower attack stat matters more for the low damage output
2) Both Onix and Geodude have very low Special Defense, which is why you kept getting OHKO'd with super effective special moves. High level can't really overcome this
3) There is a thing called an X Special Defense item that actually would have bulked up your team from the Special-type water and grass type moves. X Defend did nothing
4) Similarly, Harden is a move that increases Defense, not Special Defense (you need high Special Defense for water and grass attacks)
5) At one point Geodude was holding an X Attack. These are consumable items used in battle and not hold items, so that doesn't do anything
Study and a careful nature which lowers special attack but raises sp def would have also helped a bit

There is an item called the guard spec that prevents your pokemon from getting their stats lowered for five turns, speedrunners use these so then they can set up without having their stats lowered

welcome to the world of pokemon challenges, im maybe late, but it was quite refreshing to see someone who hasnt played pokemon since he popped out of his mum and has some real struggles, yes, its hard, but its way more entertaining than "yeah, and i beat this gym and that trainer, and i pretend that i struggled at the top 4 but i beat them first try" than other pokemon "challenges"
