So interesting. I also originally felt most interested in classical, and got the Well Trained Mind and started reading through and buying stuff also. But there just started being things I didn’t like in that book, and I shelved it and kept researching it. I found “For the Children’s Sake” and loved that, and the more I delved in the more I loved it. I just finished reading “Consider This: Charlotte Mason and the Classical Tradition” by Karen Glass, and it was great for showing how well Charlotte Mason did match the classical tradition, though her method of does not match the “neoclassical” style popular today with the divided trivium based on Dorothy Sayers essay/speech given 25 years after CM died. The trivium was never traditionally divided into 3 separate stages like neoclassical does today. Another idea I got from the book was that at ages 15 years old and up, classical and Charlotte Mason are going to start becoming more and more similar, and CM students would be well equipped to tackle the quadrivium in university level coursework. Trivium was not traditionally open to children under about 15, so CM is an excellent foundation for entering / joining the classical tradition as the grow.
And, Charlotte Mason method does treat them as a complete person in the early stages better than neoclassical, but at ages 15+ they would be treated the same. Charlotte Mason method gets more difficult as the forms progress, to quite difficult and impressive in the upper forms! A Delectable Education Podcast really details the amazing things those older forms were assigned and able to do, while it seems like a lot of people talking about CM do focus on the gentler early years.
I think you are correct about formal instruction of writing. That is minimal, it is mainly gained through the eyes with reading and reading and reading great books, and living and breathing those beautiful writing styles. Written narration prompts in higher forms will ask the student to write their answer in the style of the poet or a writer they have been reading that term. Karen Glass talks about how this all works in some excellent podcast episodes with the Literary Life Podcast - absolutely beautiful method ❤ Really, very inspiring, and she says and has seen evidence that it all starts coming together for students in the last 2-3 years of school.
Great conversation! I really love thinking about Charlotte Mason and classical and learning more about it all!

I have come to a similar conclusion. I am a part of a classical coop which is great for both me and my child at the current time. At home I can present the material in the curriculum in various ways since we like variety. I can choose to do unit studies or find 'living books' to further explain any facts. We can act out history events or visit museums to get more of a visual. I can even use lapbooking and play games...I have only been using the classical method for almost a year so I realized these things a bit late, and this approach requires planning which is a strength I am growing in. : ) Thanks for the video, it gave me an idea of what the classical method is like for the older years

C Charles I love how many different ways we can make classical learning fun and alive. Your approach sounds so fun to me and not the dreary idea of classical education that so many believe it to be (myself included). I am starting to see that approach is everything. Your coop sounds fun also. We used to be part of a group called Classical Conversations that we attended weekly and presented material at home to supplement. Field trips are always a fun way to liven things up and unit studies also. Thanks so much for for stopping by to watch!

Lol, so did I. I found the well trained mind book and I bought all of her recommendations. I couldnt do it. It was hard to implement. I ran from all things too. And ran from one method to another. This year we did classical conversations and it was a huge change for me. I am learning how to implement it. I am finding classical education to be very relaxed.

    • @momzestlife

Just Sew Trish we must have had a similar journey! 😅I hopped around from different methods also. I didn’t realize Classical could actually be relaxing but it really has been this year. I’ve enjoyed embracing and settling into it.

Thank you so much for creating this! It helped answer some questions that I had. My husband came from Europe and was raised with a classical education. Until I started learning about different methods of homeschooling, I didnt even know what that was. Lol. I was taught with the traditional method which is what my schooling leans towards. Learning about the various methods of education really helped us understand why we had different expectations of what homeschool should look like for our kids. I love a lot of things that I am learning (and trying to implement) about Charlotte Mason, but I have the same concerns about methodology and and structure in the older years. I think we will be putting our oldest child into CC next year for the benefit of the reasoning, debate, etc...I think a blend of the different methods really is the best. Blessings.

Charlotte Mason did advocate formal composition instruction in the high school years.

This is correct. I know that this was done before the book Know and Tell came out by Karen Glass but it mentions a great deal about the process of composition.

I appreciate this video so much! I've read The Core but it's been so long that I've forgotten exactly what classical education is. We've just recently started First Language Lessons with my youngest kiddos and they're actually loving this part of school the most. I had to look more into Classical again because I'm just loving watching my kids get excited and also at 6 years old able to remember what they're learning. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us!!!

I really love how honest and real you are in your videos. Sometimes I feel like I’m seeing depictions of methods like CM that are too idealized. As my kids have gotten older, I have gone more CM not less. But I am really an eclectic homeschooler. I design my own curriculum. CM has given me permission to let some things go light and easy. I’d think narration is supposed to move from oral to written. I have my kids do both. I have always made my children write from the earliest age. Not dictation. I made them write their own thoughts. I guess where CM demands no twaddle in the reading materials, I demand no twaddle in the writing assignments. Begin the way you intend to go on is my motto. 😉

Such a great conversation. Thank you so much for taking the time to share all of your thoughts & experiences on this subject. I truly have an appreciation for both methods..even though I tend to be more CM at my core. However, due to a handful of life factors.. I have not 100% implemented either method. With that said, this yr I am realizing that CM truly is the best method for my kiddos. For me personally, I had a huge mental block on how to have a true CM Homeschool, and fulfill our State Homeschooling requirements.. ie: a Homeschool Portfolio.. it's taken me a while, but I think I finally got this now... TY again for sharing..

I love this so much!! I am totally leaning toward some kind of combination of the two because I am torn. There are so many good things about each as I'm learning/reading about each. One of my concerns with Charlotte Mason is def that I'm skeptical about the depth/rigor of academics as they approach the older years, while it is such a great fit for small children. Thanks for making these videos!!

Thank you for your video. I homeschool our oldest, we just finished our first year and we use classical. I have heard of CM and was trying to understand it and learn from. Since it was our first time I used a box curriculum from Memoria Press for Kindergarten. Watching your video helped me see that maybe for that age group Memoria used CM methods as well. We had art appreciation which included painting, sculptures, and music. We had a copybook for writing out memorization. We had once a week dictation. We discussed character traits and things we read in books. And now for summer my son reads books and writes about what he read in a journal and draws a little picture. I might want to incorporate more things like that

We are first year homeschooling using Charlotte Mason curriculum, my kids love the science so much! But somehow I feel like their grammar is kinda weak. I feel like for homeschool families like us who mostly use languages other than English at home need more than CM to help the kids to build a good foundation

    • @momzestlife

I definitely agree. We needed a bit more as my kids got older as well. I’ll forever appreciate what CM did in our family but we did grow out of the method eventually.

I was classically all the way. I was taught that way and when I couldn't find a school that taught that way, I chose to home school. Classical conversations was my first choice but throw on the brakes. I am not religious. So nope didn't buy it to any of it. The thomas jefferson method reader it's head and the Robinson curriculum. Dang it cds really, nope. I am a book junky. Lol then from there I found konos. I didnt get it at first because It was as old as me. Lol I have all three volumes now but that was after I learned about Charlotte Mason and figured out how to scrap religion and use a philosophical approach to pedagogy. I have story of the world and writing with ease. But I prefer logic of english by Denise Eide because I loved her video of the engineer who like myself didn't get english at all. I had to go to summer school to learn to read in the fifth grade. I came to the same conclusion after reading Charlotte Mason companion. At first don't shove it down the child's throat. Slow and steady wins the race. I do a trivium thought the year. We have three semesters. The grammar semester is basically where we get the vocabulary and memorization in for the science, history and philosophy courses and the dialectic semeste,r my youngest loves this semester because we do a lot of experiments.. The rhetoric semester, My oldest loves it because he gets to do show and tell. I use a book time line called our family tree and integrate historical events and art and music, and all that rig-a-ra-ma-roll

I thought this was so helpful. Thank you for making this video. My daughter will be a kindergartner this year. I did ABC Jesus Loves Me with her before she started school, she had pre-k in private school while I taught high school English (same school) and her teacher was very Montessori inspired. Now we are moving overseas and I want to homeschool. Some of the things I heard about Charlotte Mason really tugged my heart strings but I’m a writing literature teacher myself so I obviously care about ELA. I don’t want to overload our schedule; I want her to develop a love of learning and strengthen the strengths that I see she has so far. I’m glad I found your video, thank you again.

I am in our 3rd year homeschool journey now and may give you some more ideas. We do not really follow any education way. Main parts in our homeschool are Bible, math and arts. I read through every education ways and pick the best part work for me. I use video-led structured learning (Bible, math, english), parent-led (English reading, Chinese, Spanish, Latin, art, Sports), coop(english grammar, history, science, music), outsourcing(piano, Hebrew). I know we have a lot. However, based on my kids and family function, they are in the golden age of memorizing. Actually, they are different creature to remember facts from adults. I throw as many as languages I can source to my kids and they can remember them in seconds, which is amazed me. If you teach kids piano, you will be amazed how fast they pick up a piece and cooperate their both hands. My suggestions to all homeschoolers who has a big dream is try as many as you can and do not limit yourself.

Hey there! I have been following you for the last 5 years, ever since we started homeschooling ,starting with oldest coming out of public at 2nd grade. I am similar in I want to evolve my teaching stayles and my approach to educational methods as my kids grow and their learning stlyes and needs change. That being said I have always been eclectic, as i can see the benefits/drawbacks to each method we use, but as I grow as a teacher I try to change things up not because I personally feel comfortable teaching a method ( as I would once only teach something I was personally bent toward) but now a change will come because I see thats what my child needs and learns best with. Ok, so I have had a back and forth love/dislike with both Classical and CM but find myself choosing curriculum publishers that often fits into one or the other and cycle through both, sometimes without realizing it. LOL. I would LOVE to hear your part 2 on this subject as I am now finding that I may have one son bent more toward Classical (yet not sooo boxed in where he cannot explore deeper the areas he enjoys the most) and the other son more toward CM ( but not sooo free flowing, as he likes structure but also likes the Living Lit and narration approaches). Hearing your perspective and getting ideas from you and from the listeners comments helps so much!😊

Hey Jennifer- thanks for watching, and YES. I am in the same boat as you with one kid leaning very much toward classical. I'm honored that you would follow me for so long! Your oldest would be in 7th grade now? Anyway, I'll leave a link to my latest video on the topic: th-cam.com/video/CF3aUiLeyEE/w-d-xo.html

I have not taken to Charlotte Mason at all, it seems very old fashioned in my opinion. Though there are elements I agree with, such as living books and time to explore nature. A. Smith CM has several anthologies, and I have read a few of them. I have also studied under a CM instructor for six weeks ( the instructor privately taught me how to apply Charlotte Mason to my homeschool). I don't think I come off as underestimating the approach. This is never what I said in the video. I do appreciate the worth and value of CM. As I stated in the video, it doesn’t work for me in this season of our life, but Classical is working out beautifully for us. I am appreciative of the difference I see in my kids now that we have made the switch. (Also I saw your second comment below about the Well Trained Mind and CC being shallow and I acknowledge your opinion, though I do not agree with you). I actually appreciate both WTM and Charlotte Mason’s approach for different reasons- the main one for us: stage of life. Which Charlotte Mason book did you enjoy the best? I read Home Education, volume 1 a few years ago. Let’s keep the dialogue open ...

The book really turned me off Susan Wise Bauer, CC seems extremely shallow and pretentious.

Sorry it turned you off. I enjoy both CC and Susan Wise Bauer's materials. Please see my above reply.
