So I used your ideas to make a personalised list for my son. When I handed it to him I was expecting groaning but he took one look and said, "Thanks Mom! I think this list might improve my life."

I love the formal lessons in half a day. Personally I like the idea of switching them. In the hot months do outside things in the morning and lessons in the afternoon. In the cold months, flip it. Lessons in the morning and outside in the morning.

Exactly what I came to Comments to say!! We live in Arkansas now, where summers are hot and HUMID! And without central air conditioning. Even with 3 window A/C units and a dehumidifier, it is still quite warm and humid inside the house, and very hot and humid outside. Earlier in the morning is when you go out to feed the chickens and other animals and to tend to the garden, as well as mowing, and building and fixing fences, coops, high tunnels, and garden beds. Not to mention riding bikes and playing outdoor games. Who wants to do these at 2 pm when it's 100° with 60% humidity?! In some climates, it really makes sense to do outdoor activities in the morning during the summer and sit and do book work in the afternoon.

New homeschooling mum, I was struggling with Mr will especially waking up in the morning. I would wake up an throw a school day together or on a bad day simply cancel it😬. So yesterday I watch one of your video “I can, I will, I wish” might have messed up the title lol it was all about will power. So this morning I got up an had a really productive day. However I felt like our afternoon were not that productive we still use technology. so I just went of TH-cam “not looking to research on homeschooling” and guess what was my first recommendation “how to have productive afternoon” my fingers couldn’t move fast enough. I really appreciate all your hard work. Thank you.

You garden in the afternoon?! You definitely don't live in Arkansas! 😆 I'm originally from Minnesota. Arkansas summers are very hard to get accustomed to. 🥵
Loved this week's episode. Lots of great ideas. I would love to see more examples of how to practically get lessons done in the morning, especially when you have a busy household. It seems like our school day drags on due to unproductive mornings. Also it seems like a lot of outings (field trips, checkups, etc...) are done in the mornings - partly because of timing and because of littles napping after lunch. I would love to hear your thoughts on addressing all those "not so normal" days.

Some one said she slips her day. In summer they go out in the morning and school in afternoon.
I have struggled with this for YEARS and asked on forums... with my kids under 10 it was so confusing. Now my kids are a bit older but I am still thankful for this. Thank you so much for these and talking about -not- entertaining the child.

I really appreciate your guidance and encouragement!!! It alleviates a lot of tension from fretting too much. My 5 year old is already reading and can add and subtract. Excellent subject. What is the fruit of being diligent with your time? Something I struggle with as an adult also. Leisure, can be an idol for me. Our lifes should be fruitful. Diligence should result in 'more' fruit.

Our older are doing odd jobs for friends in our community, but many of these jobs must be done in the mornings when it's cooler.
One of the great things about homeschooling is our ability to be flexible with our schedules!

For our family, we live in Phoenix and it hot in the afternoons so I schedule outings/outdoor play in the mornings 8 months out of the year. I would like to take my kids to a nursing home to appreciate our elders.

I live in Yuma, it is hard for me to switch it up, lol. I prefer to do school work in morning; but the hot months make that unbearable, :) So we schedule the mornings for Nature walks too :)

Older students done by 1pm...what time did they start? & any breaks? New to CM :)
Right now we begin around 9/930 but dont completely finish until 2pm. But 2-3 breaks in there (some small & 1 larger lunch)
Edited to add: she is 13 years old
The sample time table Sonya looked at has Charlotte’s students (approx. grades 7-9) starting at 9:00 and going until 1:00 with no lunch break and one 10 min. slot for “play.” So you could look at it as a total of about 4 hours of school work with a 10-minute break. Depending on how long your breaks and lunch are, you’re probably very close to that summary.

We are on our 2nd year of hs & want to start a more CM approach. How do you encourage full attention when a child comes out of public school in middle school?
Hi Dee. Attention is a habit like any other that needs training and effort at any age. You will want to make sure that you have a discussion with your middle school kiddo about the importance of attention, provide examples of when it has helped as well as when the lack of it caused a problem, make sure you are varying lessons so that their mind is being challenged and not getting tired of one effort, and determine consequences for a lack of intention. Some may be natural while others may be imposed by you and your husband. It is important that prior to enforcing a consequence, you have a discussion with your kiddo and let him know what the consequences will be. We've recently started a new series on Habit Q & A. What if you always have babies and toddlers that need to nap in the afternoon? I want to keep our schooling to the morning but often times morning is when we go to appointments and outings because I want to be home for naps. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

How about one toddler
Hi, Thank you for joining us! Charlotte Mason believed that children should have a "quiet growing time" in their early childhood. She did not require formal lessons of children younger than six years old. That being said, there is plenty to do during that time and you can certainly teach your child things informally as they are interested.
