    Those of us that have been in the military knows that whenever some general or admiral gets the bright idea that we need new uniforms, a huge, long, and very expensive process starts that usually ends up with about a year of mixed uniforms throughout the service. It takes that long for them to be produced, shipped, and issued. Even so, it still happens way too often. This would not be an issue with starfleet, as almost all ships and stations can replicate new uniforms on the spot. All they need is an order from starfleet with the design parameters. It’s amazing that they don’t get a change order every time an admiral gets a new command. lol

    • @Ideo7Z
      @Ideo7Z ปีที่แล้ว

      So true. Flagg officers seem to think spending obscene amounts of money changing uniforms will improve morale. Not quality of life issues like eliminating dangerous mold issues in the barracks, improving the food at dfacs, stamping out toxic leadership behaviors, actually allowing personnel to actually pursue a higher education as promised by recruitement ads instead of being forced to cancel classes because some officer looking to prop up their OER decides to have a field exercise/equipment audit/special detail. Oh better pay and not gutting retirement benefits. But a new uniform I guess solves all the problems in the universe.

      It's just a maternity version of the uniform to be worn by officers who were pregnant, we have some similar uniforms in the military right now and they are only allowed to be worn once the person receives permission from their CO after having received a record from a doctor confirming this. Starfleet while not expressly a military agency would naturally follow this line of thought.

    The flight uniform was simply for the race in that one episode of Voyager.
    The uniforms that Tuvok and Maquis members wore was PT/physical training gear. In the military you wear shorts and tshirts or sweats during PT. You don't wear your duty uniform. So why should Tuvok and the Maquis wear their duty uniform when they are running around Voyager for PT?

  • @christopherdillon7736
    @christopherdillon7736 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    It should be mentioned that Officers in most militaries are responsible for purchasing their own uniforms. You see a HUGE variation of uniform variation among German officers in WWII as they were given extreme leniency when it comes to personal tailored uniforms and I think this is an argument that can be made for the excessive variations in dress uniforms we see in Star Fleet.

    • @GoldPicard
      @GoldPicard 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      To continue on that just also look at the variations of uniforms the each branch of the military has and also the many different variations of way to wear each uniform. I'll reference the US Army for this since I was in for 8 years and have the most experience with their uniforms; You have the basic in-garrison field uniform(and I'm gonna reference the ACU period not this new OCP stuff we're wearing now) the ACU(Army Combat Uniform) which is the basic everyday uniform that's worn when you're not in PT's or a dress uniform and is normally worn with a baseball style Patrol Cap but in some more formal circumstances or by the unit's CO discretion is replaced by the Beret and in colder climates you can also wear your fleece cap from your PT's in order to better protect and warm your head and ears. Now a sub-variant of the ACU exists called the A2CU(Army Aircrew Combat Uniform) which is only worn by aircrews because it is less flammable then the standard ACU and is more in-line with the flight suits you see in the other branches(unless you're in aviation you'll never see this unless you're getting a chopper ride) .
      Next you have the APFU(Army Physical Fitness Uniform) which consists of running shoes, socks, long pants, shorts, short-sleeve shirt, long-sleeve shirt, running jacket, and a fleece cap. Theses can be worn in any configuration and it all counts as PT's which is what you wear when you're working out or at the end of the duty day and aren't authorized to wear civilian attire.
      And finally you have the ASU(Army Service Uniform) which is the dress uniform worn for formal occasions and also has a few different configurations and they are all worn with either the Beret or NCO cap for enlisted and the Beret or Officers cap for the Commissioned Officers(Warrants just wear what ever the hell they feel like cuz they're Warrant Officers).
      Now that is just a condensed list of what just the US Army wears and it just makes sense to have all of the variations of uniforms within Starfleet because there is more than just the fleet and the varies installations they have to support the fleet or be supported by the fleet and within Starfleet being as VAST as it is(I mean we're talking about a space force that is meant to operate across entire QUADRENTS so the force has a size bigger than a few planets total populations so there is bound to be specific groups that differ from the main force in both appearance and operating procedures.

    @6:42
    Grey tends to blend in relatively well everywhere, especially in the dark. A darker grey would likely be better, but even a comparatively light grey will do. However, black (as you mention around the @7:50 mark) is actually the very worst colour you can choose for any situation. This is due to black being absent in nature, it's not a colour, but an absence of colour. Black draws the eye *and sticks out like a sore thumb*. In fact, modern submarines (which were painted black for many years) have recently abandoned that colour for this very reason.
    Modern combat uniforms generally don't have it either, instead opting for greys, dull greens and earthy tones.
    However, that is all undone by 2 things on that outfit. 1, the big red stripe.
    2. The tight fitting nature of that uniform. The best kind of outfit for camouflage purposes and general survival is something that is somewhat loose, but not baggy. You see, when considering camouflage, it's not just colour that must be thought of, but shape, shine, shadow, silhouette and sudden movement. Shape is the biggest problem with that outfit camouflage wise, with it being rather tight and having very unnatural line about it that would be rather difficult to break up with things like natural vegetation. Basically, the shape would stick out first, rather than colour.

    • @OriginalPiMan
      @OriginalPiMan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm guessing a darker grey would be best if you want one uniform for all such missions on a variety of planets and biomes, while a variety of camo colours would be best if you want a different uniform for each biome.
      And since we know the Star Trek universe is one where resource scarcity is a problem, they went with the more conservative option. /s

    • @garethfairclough8715
      @garethfairclough8715 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Such witty sarcasm there +originalpiman.
      Replicating things takes energy, something which was made very clear in Voyager. Indeed, they went to great pains to ration replicator use. It would make sense for them to revert to a more generalised "subdued" uniform type.
      Not to mention, that while we generally only see "one biome planets" (exceptions have included the genesis planet), it's not outside the real of possibility that you really would need a subdued 'camouflage' uniform which would work reasonably well in multiple kinds of environment.

    • @garethfairclough8715
      @garethfairclough8715 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good old one-biomes! :P
      Though there have been exceptions of course.
      Hell, I've heard the theory that the uniforms like that are actually a kind of "adaptive camouflage", but we never actually see that because it'd be too freaking expensive to actually create that effect.
      But black? That's just the worst colour if you want to hide.

    • @OriginalPiMan
      @OriginalPiMan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Aside from the beginning and the year of hell, replicator rationing appears limited to rationing personal use and on rare occasions, plot convenience. They certainly appear to have no trouble replicating new shuttles and Delta Flyers as necessary. I'm sure that if they felt a new uniform would help them survive, then they'd make a new uniform.

    There is also the offical Captain's grey singlet, worn by Picard in First Contact and Janeway in Macrocosm, and occasionally by half Klingon engineers when feeling amorous in caves or seriously pissed off in Malon freighters, basically anywhere a sexy sheen can develop.
    And I think there was a ex Borg drone variant, although Seven's outfits deserve their own video (just realized the implications as I heard a bass solo in my head).
    What was the medical function of Seven of Nine's uniform? besides causing localised high blood pressure in surrounding crewmen (and viewers*), and what medical needs required high heels (Borg implants affected her posture?) and a corset with push up cups?
    *Voyager was available on video tape way before being screened on my local network, and I got the tape of her character introduction as a crewmember about a week after it was released at the video store. The revelation scene of her in her slinky new outfit was distorted and had tape faults from being held on pause for way too long…
    It was a primitive time, before internet porn.
    A bit of trivia, the original Borg drone outfit for Jeri Ryan almost killed her. In the scene where she first appeared, as a independent drone liaison, and stepped out of her alcove, Jeri Ryan turned her head to address one of the other actors and promptly fainted in full costume. Turns out the neck cuff of her Drone getup cut off blood flow through her carotid artery whenever she turned her head, and if a crewman hadn't immediately put her head back to a safe position she would have died or suffered severe brain damage due to lack of blood flow to the brain. And then once she got into her catsuit outfit Jeri Ryan lamented in an interview that she was never eating anything but salad ever again.

I seem to remember a discussion involving Worf on ds9 about uniform comfort, in which it was stated that ships and space stations were maintained at 21C. At that temperature I could be very comfortable in that uniform, assuming I was doing a desk job and that the material was breathable

    Just a consideration but I’m wondering if the variety in admiralty uniforms differed by what department they were in charge of. I.e (non)Combat Admirals I mean Defense Admirals in charge of the 1st-12th Fleets would be assigned shipboard uniforms. Outpost Admirals another uniform, JAG, Logistics, R&D, etc..

    Completely agree, the Dominion War variant is definitely the best uniform, especially the vest alternative for the Captains. You forgot to mention that there was a difference with the white jacket dress uniforms, Admirals and Captains had an all white jacket while low rank officers had the white jacket with the grey middle. Great break down on the uniforms tho.

    I've always imagined that once space travel becomes more common, even in a military environment, they would be somewhat more lax with uniform standards, keep it professional but you can wear something your comfortable with. This would be a thing because of how absurdly difficult, dangerous, uncomfortable and isolated spaceflight is compared to literally every other form of transportation you can put a human through. None of those things are going away no matter what we do or develop so traditions would be adapted rather than the other way around.
    Perhaps actual pressure suits and EVA suits would be more uniform in their appearance.
    As for the uniforms discussed here the flight suits from the very first Enterprise were by far the best, flight suits look pretty good so long as you aren't fat and they have pockets, many pockets.
    Take it from someone who flies for a living, the pockets are key, you can never have too many pockets.

      If I remember correctly, O'Brien changes from the DS9/Voyager uniform back into his old TNG uniform when he returns to the Enterprise D to say goodbye in 'Emissary'.
      By 'Generations' it appears that the DS9/Voyager style uniform was being rolled out onto starships, although it was a bit visually jarring how officers were able to keep swapping between the two styles.

    Just found the channel and have been doing a bit of binging. Nice work out there, and coming from an old star wars fan, I find the 'what is canon' differences adorable, we needed a gradient chart to keep us straight, until disney threw the baby out with the bath water. Nice to see the dedication to primary sources.
    I do agree on the militarization of star fleet for the dominion war as being some of the best written stories, while also being the furthest from what Roddenberry would have liked for his human utopia. The problem with Utopia is that it Doesn't Feel very Human. Maybe it's the cynic in me, but I prefer DS9's imperfections to crystal towers and toga perfection.
    Sort of like the divide with DC and Marvel. DC writes hero's as Gods, to be Inspired by. Marvel writes them as People to Related to.
    Anywho, props to you and your editor for some entertaining work.
    PS, if you ever get around to a new Starship Lore, can you take a crack at the USS Yeager? The kitbash of the Intrepid model and a Maquis Raider? That one just confuses the heck out of me.

      Agreed on the shift in writing when the Dominion War came into play. It showed that as good as things may be, sometimes we have to get down and dirty in order to defend our way of life - especially the whole episode on how Sisko got the Romulans to come on board; a few murders and self-loathing are a small price to pay in order to stop half the galaxy from getting killed, and that we're anything but perfect, either now or 400 years (come to think of it at this point, closer to 350 years) from now.

    The uniform at 6:18 to me was a survival gear uniform. Good for when support and logistics are likely to be scarce or missing for long periods of time.
    My guess is the flight suit at 5:27 is a Tom Paris special. If I remember that episode correctly, they were in a race so it really stands to reason that he would have designed it. Probably heavily basing it on an old designs of some sort and incorporating modern uniform elements into it. Kind of like the control scheme of the Delta Flier itself.

    It seems the Admiralty of Starfleet was allowed a lot of leeway when it comes to uniforms. As long as it's predominantly red on black, has gold stripes on it, and displays your rank at or near the collar, you're pretty much free to make whatever customisations you want.

    To be fair star trek rearly bothers to point out just how much replicator tech would change things. Go from this is the uniform these are a small number of varieties for certain things, because supply lines are an arsenal. Now introduce the ability to print whatever u feel like that day- I'd have uniform standards rather than rigidly diffined, which army already has due to"oh u want better gear and are willing to pay shipping yourself, ok not our problem then just make sure it's all standard on parade".
    I recon the less millatery nature of Starfleet means that unless your in a war zone they'd be lax about this on ship and ok with making new variants up on the spot

    My understanding of the uniform for DS9 was that they were a utility coverall to ease the active, grunt labor aspect of working with and around Cardassian tech on a former ore processing facility. Visiting officers would often wear the TNG style, with the TNG unforms dispearing after TNG ended and Voyager stuck with the newer style.
    The modern equivelent would be starship crews wearing service uniforms while on DS9 everybody wore BDUs/utility uniforms.

    The only things I can find to correct is that Not only Ezri, but Ben, Jake and Older Sisko all wore the Desert uniform in that single episode. Ben had Red division color and I think his father and Jake both wore gold stripes.
    the Combat Uniform, in it;s second appearance added the Department shirts under that much more padded black top with the matching Division color.
    Other than that, I agree, I prefer this uniform to any other 24th Century uniform.

    To be honest I can see value in 2 away uniforms for crew. Type 1 = High vis colours possibly with silver striping for exploration in presumed non-hostile environments specifically so that if something goes wrong you have a decent chance of your fellow away team members spotting you unconcious in the undergrowth as opposed to walking right by you and not seeing you there. Type 2 = intended for hostile or low profile missions where you want to blend in and would be tan or given replicators environment appropriate e.g white for snowfields.

Ill admit my favourite variant of the uniform is the TOS film/ Wrath Of Kahan style uniform followed by the TNG film/ Dominion war uniform for the same reasons you had mentioned. In a sense, the TOS film uniform seemed more of a dress uniform while TNG film seemed more of a duty uniform with all of its variants. I admit the Red Coloure of the TOS film uniform was a turn off, the style was there. Just my opinion.
