Direct and to the point, thank you i will get on mine this weekend. Love that its straight to the nitty gritty, not 5 or 10 minutes of a person talking.
The 97's don't have enough fuel lines to drop the the fuel tank without causing even more damage. Takes 10 minutes to remove 6 bolts from the bed, disconnect electrical wires from the tail lights, and have three people to remove the bed as you have so much easy access now. Shifting the bed is also optional.
thanks for taking the time to do the video, I did the same on a dodge because I am in the rust belt. I just used an engine crane a bit more crude but it is an old truck so wasn't worried about marking up the bottom of the box edge on front. We left the rear bolts in loosely to keep alignment just lifted the front. Cheapest fuel pump I could find and it's lasted years lol
A lot of work!. I can't understand why not the manufacturer made an access hole to replace the fuel pump. Thanks and best regards from Mexico. Roberto.
Nice video of showing that there is more than one way of changing out a fuel pump in one of these trucks. One thing I would have done is changed out the rubber hoses held on with clamps while I was in there.
Tank is nearly full, and truck is in deep gravel. This method was pretty easy. The only downside for me is my truck came with 5th wheel mounting rails in the bed... These were much harder to access and required hand wrenching to remove 4 more nuts AND locknuts... 8 more NUTS!
I changed the pump on mine a week ago an had to drop the tank. Turns out the thing was pretty loaded with scum in it. Cleaned the tank out but i think i messed up and didnt hookup the extra wire off the pump because the gauge reads zero gas.
@@魏森 not really. You're using more tools than is necessary and wasting more ti.e than necessary.2 hrs max if you have all the proper parts and no digging too deep into rusty parts you might have to replace in the process
To lower tank, must wrestle with fuel removal, where to store that gas? then unstrap the tank and lower same. Am doing it right now on sloped driveway ugg.
I think it’s worth cutting the hole in the bed and doing it from the top. If you have any type of rust under your bed, I suggest cutting. Your rig looks pretty clean on the other side though.
Did hitting the lock ring clock wise break it better going counter? I do that technique on certain applications. I got to do this in the coming weeks to my 88 gmt400.
This was a good way but why not just get a piece of 2x4 and small jack stands instead of doing those long bolts it will make it a little faster not judging just my unsafe opinion 😁
@@lonewulf5150 Hi, all good.I would say neither way is really easy. It's just that I'm a mechanic been working on cars everyday of my life for +- 23 years, with a pair of really big hands by now(lol)..and just don't waste time doing unnecessary work. Hey people, as long as we keep the Chevy trucks going, they're worth it.
I agree. Just drop the tank. Especially if you have running boards and a fiberglass camper shell on top. Mine wasn't that difficult but I have a lift and a helper.
Last time I did this years ago I dropped the tank it only took an hour and a half. That was about 15 years ago now I need to do it again. I'll see how fast this is old guy can do it now.
After 97 GM changed the fuel lines and made them long enough to drop the tank down before you have to disconnect them. I've got a 96 I've got to finish tomorrow because I'm having trouble breaking the rusted fittings loose. I may have to cut them and tell the owner he needs yo buy the whole assembly which is what I recommended in the first place. Earlier then 98 and you can only move the tank aside but not lower to access the fuel lines. I'm trying to avoid what he's had to do here. I didn't price the job out for those hours. As clean as this truck is dropping the tank should have been easier.
Apparently, you've never dropped one of these tanks? Takes 10 minutes to remove the bolts from the bed. Takes an hour to wrestle with the tank and the fuel lines.
I agree. But there's always people like Larry Woodruff. With those dumb ass comments. Larry Woodruff, thats like telling someone who found a shortcut on a track, to try a longer a route where theres mud everywhere. Why would they do that.
I agree Larry, Just tried to drop the tank on my 95 chevy work truck, turned the bolt about an inch on the front strap mount before the weld broke loose holding the nut so it looks like im gonna have to do what this guy done to make the necessary repairs
Dropping the tank is easier but those comments get buried because they want the bed to fall on you while working in there so you can get hurt = more money to them.
NAILED IT !!! Even took off tail lights LOL .A truck this old i would cut access flap through floorboard or bed and drop in new pump ..30 minutes tops !! WTF ????

Just took my bed off in 15 minutes. Super easy
Watched many repair video's on this subject, but this one is BY FAR THE BEST ONE!!! Thank you so much for your help!
What is really good about this video. You didn't waste my time talking my ear off. You just showed me how to do it. Thank you! Great video!
Best video on TH-cam so far to search for! Great angle ! And straight to the point!

That's what I did on my truck and is the best way to do it THANK YOU for showing every single strap
the underside of that truck looks beautiful! definitely not in a snow state
where's the rust
A lot of work!.

Thank you man. Alot of people skip right over the actual pump install.
Great video ingenious idea with the all thread
I got tired just by watching this lol

Pump replacement work is a task that I don't really want to do. I also replaced it again a year later because of a bad pump.
good vid, ignore the haters. sometimes its better to drop the tank sometimes not.
I can see why some don't want to drop the tank. But it seems a lot more work this way imo.
This way was easy peezy japanesey
This way is by far easier

Did he leave the other bolts in on opposite side but just loosen them? If not whats keeping the bed from sliding off at that angle ?
@@christopherreyes4030 I didn't remove the bolt on the other side.
I'm replacing mine for the 3rd time. Damn you Chevy 😂
He is doing it the best way for him its ok to do the same job different

Nice video! What length rod did you use and what size/thread count?
Does this apply for the 98 chevy k1500 5.0l v8 in terms of the pump inside the tank?
I having to do it myself also and this is a great video, but how is the bed not sliding off?

I CUT A HOLE IN MY BED OF 67 CHEVY TRUCK , ABOUT 1 HOUR . PATCHED THE TRUCK , DUNE .
Did hitting the lock ring clock wise break it better going counter? I do that technique on certain applications. I got to do this in the coming weeks to my 88 gmt400.
I made a mistake.Remove the ring turning it counterclockwise.
Who ,what, when and why!! Talk to us😮
Nice I gotta do this job tomorrow
wouldn't dropping the tank be easier and faster?
I'm sorry I don't know.
I can't lift a vehicle highly,so I lifted a bed.
No sir
Dropping the tank is an absolute pain in the azz. Takes 10 minutes to take the bed off.
can anybody tell me if 1997 was the year they had the fuel pumps in the gas tank?
Yeah man, they're in the tank for a 1997 C1500. You can see in the video at 13:48 that he pulls the fuel pump out of the tank.
most fuel injected have pump in the tank
why didnt you just drop the tank it takes like 5 mins?
I can't drop the tank in 5 mins.
@@kane-kk its 2 bolts and all you need is a 5/8 and a jack if it has gas and you can sit straight up under it
Never seen a mechanic drop a tank in these trucks in 5 minutes, but I have seen them remove a bed in 5 minutes.

I get to do this in mine except I’m cutting a hole in my bed but that’s because I don’t care plus the truck will get a new one anyways
Dropping the fuel tank is a lot less effort, and note that the big lock ring in the video isn't centered, barely holds the unit down.
I disagree I've done it by dropping the tank. Very difficult to replace lines and hoses with little space for the hands.

Why is it that you never say a word through the hole video. Like maybe what size socket your using?
He is over working his self
Drop the tank takes half hour by myself.
He must be getting paid by the hour, lol
Why? This is the quickest way
Well...I didn't get paid much if that's what you think...I did mine in less than a hour
What a waste of time an effort 2 bolts for the tank straps and tanks on the ground ummmm some people make shit way harder then it needs to be
Not all of them has straps.

What ??? A truck this old Just locate pump and cut access flap then drop in new fuel pump .30 minutes Done Deal !!
5 year old could do this on a rust free sissy truck, try it on a manly man salt covered rust heap, I dare ya.
