    After dropping multiple tanks in the summer, I decided to try one in the coldest part of a Missouri winter, you were right, way more fun! So I am on my way out to cut a fancy access port like yours. (No $hits given) Thanks for the video, it is much appreciated!

    Just did mine today. Dimensions were great, plenty of space. I just cut three sides though - and bent it back in the middle of the bed. Bloody pump fought me at every step though. Ended up breaking off both fittings on the old pump, but at least that let me put a socket and a breaker bar on 'em! That's the only thing that saved my butt today. Getting the old one out was hell. Pretty sure it was the original (97 Sierra) ... and there was no hope I'd EVER break the bolts loose to life the bed. Even the bolt for the ground wire was as one with the frame. I drilled a new hole in the crossmember for the new pump. I didn't go the hinge and latch route though. I riveted some flat iron across the opening and riveted the flap back down to it. Then used trusty old urethane to seal up the cuts. Ain't the prettiest thing, but it worked great! I've seen some people complain that the one cut is too far back, because the crossmember is under it ... but like you said, shallow angle on the reciprocating saw works a treat. Thanks for posting. It was the difference between me having my truck back and walking all winter. It's Canada. Nobody wants to walk in the winter if they can avoid it.

    • @cbgreenbay
      @cbgreenbay 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Yes they should ! It all comes down to the bean counters and the lawyers and insurance people . They all told GM allowing consumers access to fuel pumps in gas tanks would be a bad ideal and dangerous and the bean counters quickly concluded that the dealerships would rake in big bucks selling overpriced GM delfi fuel pumps and charging for many more hours of labor to remove fuel tanks and install new ones . One simple access panel that would have saved consumers million in repair cost and would have cost GM about $7 per vehicle . But instead they screwed everyone who bought a GM vehicle and then took government bailouts . Killed off Pontiac and oldsmobile and destroyed the GM brand. Their done , I won't buy another new one. They violated my trust in the brand. Still going to seek out the oldies and the goodies and drive GM. Just not buying new anymore !

    Suggestions by others for access door are great as well.
    My suggestion:
    Edit your description to share the dimensions.
    While in the bed behind the cab, from the drivers side, measure 11" then to the right mark 29 1/2". Then from the back side of the bed (behind the cab) measure 4 1/2" then 13" for the corners of your access door. Follow the video.
    Thanks for making this, I'm restoring my truck. 180k original miles 2 owner.

    LMAO I'm a retired mechanic and you don't know how many of these I've done over the years and I've seen a lot of different ways to replace a pump but this has to be the coolest. I have a 91 and my pump just went out, I can't believe already, I know it hasn't been over 20 years since I put the last one in.HA. Anyway I have a youngster who is gung ho on doing this job so I think I will show him the tilt bed method just so he can say he has done one that way. Cheers. p.s. I love the price of the new pumps nowadays, 37 bucks for the whole thing. What a deal.

    Well here it is middle of January in Idaho, and mine just went out. This will be my fourth one. I replaced the factory electrical pigtail the last time, and I got several years out of it. I believe a bad electrical connection at the factory pigtail was the main reason these things were going through so many fuel pumps. Anyhow, I'm in I don't give a shit mode on this one and doing it your way. I lifted the damn bed off my pickup the last three times by myself, and I'm done with that. I got a 98 jimmy that I paid $350 labor plus $150 for a new pump to have it replaced . It lasted less than 1500 miles. Then I said screw it and cut an access hole just behind the left rear seat . Very easy to do if you know where . Replaced the pump with a cheap $28 new pump off ebay and sealed and replaced the access panel , but made it easily removable if needed. Put carpeting back down and flipped seat back up , good as new. I have a spare $28 ebay pump in the back I could change out in 15 minutes if I needed to . But so far I haven't needed to do it . P.S if you get a new pump spend $10 bucks and get a new filtter also. It cost me $500 because my mechanic didn't replace the filter when he put the new pump in . That's probably why the original pump failed and then also the first replacement pump.

      @bobby6631 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      cbgreenbay Same thing for me $650 job found out six months later when the New pump failed never replaced the fuel filter or suggested it no wonder I went through three pumps in five years. I guess my fault too. But hell I’m not a mechanic....last one I put in was $175 Delco. And a New filter(couldn’t even blow through the old filter I almost blew my eardrums out, lol).been on for seven years no problem... replace the filter twice since then going on the third just in case....

    I've done that to several of my older chevys. I cut the door and welded a lip under the cut creating a ledge for the cut door to lay on. Also gives me a place for 4 stainless screws to attach it to. After a fuel pump change I throw my bedliner in and cover it up. Nobody the wiser. I've got a much newer chevy and the fuel pump is leaking and I'm debating cutting a door in it. Problem is I hate to cut a truck up that's only a couple years old. But if it's old enough to rust out a fuel pump its probably old enough for me to say the Hell with it and fire up the welder.

      merc marc That’s my problem I’m always broke and running it close to the E it’s sucking air and partial gas it’ll clog the crap out of your fuel filter & you will eventually hear the pump whining loud like a power steering pump whine. blew through three pumps in five years I learned my lesson to stay at half a tank and change the fuel filter every couple years

    A better fix for the floor is to cut the appropriate number of 3/16 X 1 1/4 steel to bridge the hole, drill four 1/4 inch holes in each strap, 2 to screw to the door and 2 to screw to the floor. Counter sink each with 1/2 inch. Sand the top end edges of the straps so they have a nice transition to the floor. Place the straps over the door in the indented areas and Drill 1/8 holes in the door and attach with counter sink type #14 screws, place over the hole in the floor and drill 1/8 holes in the floor and attach with screws, spray rubberized undercoat over seems, straps and screws.

    The bed is held on by four bolts and super easy to tip up... much quicker to undo four bolts than to cut a hole and put hinges on and locks...

  • @Tungoon
    @Tungoon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The reason these pumps were and are failing quickly is because they are cooled by the fuel in the tank and most of us broke people run low on fuel all the time which makes it burn up and not last that long .

    I've got a diagram from what you cut yours out to see if my measurements are right. okay the bottom of the driver's side 29 and 1/2 across. From the back of the bed down was 4 1/2 inch go down 13inchs. I'm doing this on a 98 Chevy k 1500 extended cab. I hope the measurements will work thanks for any help.

    The reason a lot of pumps go out is a bad fuel filter restricting the flow, I’ve never had problems but have always changed fuel filters on time, have had many Chevy trucks from 1989 to 2011 ,Bought a older Chevy lately and the pump was making noise, sure enough,took the filter of and could barley blow through it .

    • @Deaddoginc1
      @Deaddoginc1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The fuel filter wasn’t ever the problem, I changed mine a few times when I had the truck I think it was mainly the wife driving it short distances and always below 1/4 of a tank… but who knows !

    Bro are you constantly running your truck below a quarter of a tank ? Because fuel is the only thing that keeps them liberated. So always try to keep it above a quarter of a tank.

    • @reactions_with_will
      @reactions_with_will ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you're keeping plenty of fuel in the tank, then this modification isn't necessary.
