Ringworm in Cats

  • Dr. Lera talks about ringworm in cats with Pearl, a seven-year-old Persian cat.
    Ringworm is the common name given to a fungal infection of the superficial layers of the skin, hair, and nails. Ringworm infections can occur in humans and in all domesticated species of animals. The name comes from the classical appearance of the round, red, raised 'ring' marking the boundary of inflammation in people infected with the disease. The common name of ringworm is somewhat misleading, in that it is not an infection caused by a worm, and the infected areas are not always ring-shaped. The organisms that cause ringworm infections belong to a specialized group of fungi known as dermatophytes, so the medical name for this disease is dermatophytosis.
    Some species of dermatophytes are species-specific, meaning that they will only infect one species, whereas others can be spread between different species of animals or from animals to humans. In cats, one species of dermatophyte, called Microsporum canis, is responsible for almost all ringworm infections. This species is also infectious to dogs and humans. Occasionally ringworm infections in cats may be caused by species such as Trichophyton mentagrophytes. This species is also zoonotic, meaning that it can also infect humans. How can I tell if the ringworm lesions are new or if they are healed/healing? I acquired a kitten that was positive for ringworm, but was treated before I brought him home. I found some lesions on his ears, but I am not sure if they are old and healed or if it is an active infection.

    My cat has been dealing with ringworm for 7 months. It's all over his body. He's been on grisofulvin for weeks and no change. He's SO itchy. And licking all his fur off. We clean, give him his pills, wipe him with pet fungicide spray. I'm so depleted and he's miserable. The vet told us lime sulfur dips aren't that effective

      If indeed your cat does have ringworm lime sulphur is the most effective topical treatment that is available. Persians do tend to be predisposed to getting ringworm. It is usually recommended that both systemic and topical treatments are used in cats. Lime sulphur dips should be done twice a week for a minimum of 6 weeks. And in cases where the owners are having difficultly resolving ringworm it is also recommended that the cat be shaved. If you have a cat that continues to get ringworm it could potentially be a result of a contaminated environment

    Hi, thanks for this. We live a bit into the country and apparently people like to dumb animals :( there is a cat that seems to have decided this is its home. The night that she came i brought her in because we had a sudden freeze and couldn't leave her out. But we have a bird and the house is a mess trying to find things to sell (been a rough year with no work plus my health has gotten worse so trying to not lose our home and just get necessities) anyway...but then had to have her outside but she stays right at the door. Bought a small bag of food and a bowl and she eats an insane amount, like she can't get enough. Looked in amazing shape, which is why I believe she was an indoor cat and loved...not sure what changed...but noticed a crusty thing near the back/bottom part of her mouth and thought maybe an abscess from a tooth or injury. But all the hair is gone once the crust came off, and now I see a tiny bald spot on top of her head :( her ears and back and everything look great...but...I literally have like $5 in the bank, so can't afford a vet or meds. Shes scratched up the front door wanting to come in🥺 its breaking my heart cuz I don't know what to do. I want her healthy and fixed cuz can't deal with kittens, and no ring worm and hopefully nothing wrong with her stomach to eat SO much....but I'm not even sure how to find the money to buy her another bag of food. But she's so sweet!! Anyway....I've just been looking for ideas or some cheap or free way to magically make it all better. I'm handicapped and love animals so much and the idea of a cuddly kitten or puppy is so wonderful...but...I know with my health and our money issues we couldn't do an animal justice, so I've curbed my desire. So now...just a bit stuck. Anyway...sorry for the babble...but thanks for the look at ring worm :)

    13. Year old calico long hair I was given by someone moving out of country a few months ago. Cat is obese with elevated liver function and mild pancreatitis even diagnosed prior to ring worm outbreak. Cat is already very fearful and scratches and bites when being held or picked up. Giving pills a big challenge. Ringworm is extensive. She was shaved. But management of treatment is too expensive to take to the vet for weeks on end. I’m concerned that I will go to all this trouble and expense only to see another infection in a few months. Am I wrong to consider a trip over the “rainbow?”

      If you are considering euthanasia because of ringworm disease alone I would say that would be a very uncommon reason. If the cat is suffering because of other diseases that's another story. Ringworm as i have said can treated with lime sulfur dips which shouldn't be all that expensive. And it looks like you can get a he shampoo on line. That being said I would consult with your local veterinarian as they should be best able to advise you on how to dip the cat if that is what you are looking for since you are running into financial issues. Hope this helps. Have a blessed day

    Can a new puppy get ring worm from a cat?

  • @singinmumindun

    Our grey short-haired cat has been licking anything and everything (our legs, chairs, other furniture) for weeks. Is ringworm the most likely diagnosis? Does ringworm go away without treatment?

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ring worm in dogs is very uncommon. It is diagnosed typically through culture. Ring wrom will go away on it's own but the longer the infection is active the more it is to infect other hosts.

    Hi Doc!
    I have 2 cats, 1 adult and 1 kitten.
    We found out that the kitten has ringworm and it has spread to the adult cat and us. We are in Day 5 of giving the cats their medication.
    So far, we have quarantined the kitten to stop further spreading within the household. But we can’t quarantine the adult cat since she’s a big girl and needs to roam around.We try our best to disinfect the house but she does like to sleep with my mom and dad.
    Do you think by us not putting both cats in quarantine, will the ringworm continue to spread even while we put both cats on medication?

    Hi! Can you please give me some answers about microsporosis, I would really apriciate it.I found 3 week old kitten near the dumpster so I took him home. We washed him. During the next two days he played with other cat and we played with him (not too much because he was scared. I took him to the vetenerian. He said that he has microsporosis and gave me Itrafungol to gave him every day for a week and Oronazol to wash him with every 3 days. I desinfected the whole house and I separated him from us (he is in large cage in the bathroom).Is the therapy that they gave him good? Also how long he must be separated from all of us and when will it be safe to bring him to live with us normaly? It's been 10 days since we isolated him and non of us has any simptoms. Thank you in advanse 😊

      Hi Miljenka, typically for very young cats, the dermatologists have mentioned that lime sulfur dips are extremely safe and effective in treating ringworm (Microsporum is one of the 3 common species of ringworm). Typically we do anywhere between 5 to 6 lime sulfur dips, one dip per week. If you looking for as high a level of certainty that the cat is negative then you will need to have 2 negative culture before saying with a high level of certainty that you kitten no longer has ringworm. Please make sure to discuss that with your veterinarian to see if he agrees & recommends that treatment as well.

    I was scratched by my cat who might have ringworm... what should I do ??

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't directly make a recommendation as to what you should do for yourself. I know that I've been scratched in the past and not have issues but there is something called cat scratch fever which refers to an infection that sometimes can't be transmitted by cats. When I was scratched I just made sure to keep clean and checked in on a daily basis
