  • Dr. Lera talks about anal glands with Ginger, one of his very own dogs who is a Cavapoo.
    Anal glands - or more accurately, anal sacs - are scent glands located on both sides of your dog’s rectum. Typically, they’re in the four o’clock and eight o’clock positions. When your dog passes a stool, these glands usually express themselves naturally. They put your dog’s scent in his stool. Dogs need their anal glands periodically expressed. Be on the lookout for the following signs: Your dog is scooting on the carpet. Your dog is licking his bottom a lot. If your dog’s glands are really full, they may leak out a stinky, pungent smell. Sometimes you’ll see spots of brownish material in places where your dog has been sitting, such as on your carpet, your furniture or your lap. Eventually, the glands will rupture. You’ll see some bleeding from that area. Keep in mind, if you’re noticing either of the behaviors described above, it’s important to visit a veterinarian. There are other issues that can cause these symptoms. It’s important to rule them out!

    Great humor, good info. I have 3 doxies, and this is a constant battle. Vet tech showed me how to express it one time, and I have decided I will always pay the money to have it done at the vet clinic.

    Six months ago, my 9 year old papillon dog developed a/g infection over the weekend. I didn’t notice scooting but she seem to not sit comfortably. Once I investigated the problem and parted her long hair, saw the swollen area. At the ER visit, vet used a needle on the right gland and drained it then sent her home with antibiotic. The needle hole drained until I could see my vet the following week. Since that time I’ve had to take her weekly or monthly to my vet because her right gland now gets thick. After a $400.00 ER visit and watching her suffer, I’ve been more proactive in checking her butt. Thanks for explaining and hope other pet owners will learn from your wisdom and my experience.

    THANK YOU. i’m a longtime petsitter with no official training worried about a dog’s anal gland treatment at the moment and videos from veterinarians have been so comprehensive and definitely saved me from messing up with a lot of clients’ pets. it’s a lifesaver and i don’t have to harass my clients or their vets after hours. keep being awesome yall

    Basically a he did not show put on a pair of gloves and properly express. Yes many large dogs will also have this over the last 30 years not a pleasant thing to do, but unfortunately it’s becomes necessary and you know that smell it will need to be done
    Did I miss where he put gloves on and showed how to properly do this at home procedure?

    You said 4-6 weeks if your dog has problems, how often should you do/have it done if your dog doesn’t have any problems that you noticed? My dog doesn’t have any issues, should I look into having this done? She’s a Bichon Frise..

    hi! love your channel! question- do does age have any factor with this? What about constipation? my frenchie is about 14 mos old but she has been doing the scooting thing only once in a while but for a longgg time now. she also started doing what i call chasing her imaginary tail cuz thats how it looks. shes been going into episodes of looking uncomfortable, pacing while sometimes squat-walking and at times she goes outside and it seems like she cant go. her poop is really hard and drydespite our efforts to help her with that. does sge maybe need this expression done? I also heard once its done for them, you have to continually keep having it done for them, is that true?

    Can dogs scoot their butts like that on occasion when they’re playing? My frenchie started scooting her butt about 1-2 times only when she plays though. Not sure if this is her marking her territory (toys) or if she has an anal gland issue.

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Could be the anal glands or potentially an issue with a tail pocket

    My Corgi is fishy smelling. I know it's the glands. I usually have the groomer do it. But he seems to need it more often than that. I was hoping for a demo of how to do it safely at home. Thanks for the video and your humor adds to it. This is stressing me and my buddy out.

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes cats do have anal glands as well. I don't think that cat need their glands expressed anywhere near as much as dogs do.

    OK this is so weird because at four minutes and five seconds you said that is mostly happens with smaller dog breeds, and I’ve always had smaller dogs. To shih tzus that lasted 16 years. (Rip Snickers and Missy) 🥹 but they never ever 🙌🏼had this problem!
    Well we recently rescued a 1 year old Aussie doodle 🐩 and he’s doing the booty scoot a lil bit😂🤢🤮 and I’ve never experienced this anal gland thing owning a dog before 😬😫GROSSSA!! I already have to clean 🧽 🧼 everyone else in my houses shit 💩My six year old sons, plus grown adults that seem to be shatting and blowing up the toilet 🚽 pissing in every vicinity of the toilet except the actual bowl 5 seconds after I clean it, just like a cat does I swear!!😳😤🫠
    Speaking of cats I’m also the only one who keeps up with the litter box for our 🐈🙄
    I can do pimples & tonsil stones, I can watch the most gruesome horror films, but THIS??? Nahhh😂😂😂😂😂NOPE ✋

    What does it mean if a dog’s anal glands come out in a greenish color?

    • @DrLera
      @DrLera  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nothing. The only thing that we have determined to be abnormal with anal glands is if there is blood present

  • @mr.iforgot3062

    I use the anal gland fluid as a sauce for hot dogs, hamburger, ramen noodles, stuff like that. It's pretty pungent on it's own, but if you gingerly put it on your favorite food, it tastes good.
