Kitten Ringworm AGAIN? Treat it Fast and Simple at Home!

  • Sometimes when you're fostering, everything seems to be going so smooth. Kittens are healthy and adorable, and it's just a matter of time before they are big enough to fixed and go on to their forever homes.
    And then you find out they have....ringworm.
    Yep, my four baby girls were just about to get spayed and were already adopted (two even going to the same home!), but once their bellies were shaved for surgery, the vet noticed a couple of teeny spots of ringworm. This is easily treated and not a danger to the kittens, but it means their new families will have to wait a few more weeks until they can take them home. BUMMER!
    But even here in hot Florida, the holiday spirit is in the (humid) air. My mother-in-law has FIVE Christmas trees up in her house, and every room is covered with lights, holly, and ornaments of every size and color. But her two very active and naughty cats, Orange Blossom and Kaley, are just itching to create a Xmas Hurricane out of all the sparkly, thinly stuff, so we're holding our breath to see if the decor will make it in time to greet Santa Claus.
    And best of all, you'll meet the FLUFFIEST kitten ever to come to Kitten School!

    I foster and had a bad case of ringworm this year. Took months and oral medicine for me, and the kittens had to go to a ringworm clinic.

    • @KittenSchool
      @KittenSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yes, ringworm can take a LONG time to clear up! These kittens are also on both oral and topical meds, plus lime dips a few times a week. It's not a fun thing! I also didn't know there was such thing as a 'ringworm clinic'?!? Is this a place where they specialize in treating ringworm? I should start one of these clinics since I have had a LOT of experience with it! Thanks for the comment!

    We haven't had a Christmas tree in years as our cats would have a field day with it. So all our beautiful ornaments, including many very old and irreplaceable items, remain packed away. We do have some ceramic trees we put out. Of course the cats show no interest in them. Your mother-in-law's very brave displaying all those Christmas ornaments. I wish her good luck.

    • @KittenSchool

      Yes, Judy is very brave indeed. She LOVES decorating for Christmas and is going ahead with it even though the cats are tempted to play with them. So far, so good. I on the other hand don't own one SINGLE Christmas item, so it's no problem here!

      @@KittenSchool Cats don't make Christmas decorating easy. With what you're into, there's not much room for Christmas ornaments.

    Yeah, Caroline, I agree with you, that any cognizant and aware Cat Lover would KILL for a Long Hair Blue. Yeah, me (under my other name) have had experiences with Blues and they've been very favorable. Those things are SWEET, and relatively rare. When I met my Franky (a Parking Lot Dropoff... Fashion Boutique on my Left, Coffee Shop on my Right, and a Smart Phone Internet Shop in front of me... I was lucky to get Franky before they sent Security to chase me out of their Parking Lot for Vagrancy. But Franky Blue is beyond Sweet. It will be fun for you just to Foster a little Sweetheart like that. OH! That UNGRATEFUL Kaley hissing at you... You should jump into your Time Machine and go back and miss a few of her Midnight Feedings... serve her right! Merry Christmas Caroline!

    You work so so hard...my goodness. What a job you have. I've got 5 kittens who were a surprise after I got my adult.. but at least they're being fed by their mama. and you have time to do videos on top of having to bottle feed and nourish. I have a question: what food do you feed them on? My babies will be 5 weeks this Friday, and I've not seen them eating yet...hanging around mama's bowl but not taken a dip yet.

    Strangely enough I've just started with ringworm myself. The pharmacist has prescribed a cream and it's working well. Hope the beautiful kittens have long and safe lives. Well done to you for all your care and love to them. Have a lovely Christmas and happy new year from my family to yours. From Sheffield South Yorkshire England 🤗😺

      Hi Adrian, I have caught ringworm numerous times. I keep a tube of the cream on hand in case I catch it from the kitties. Fortunately it goes away fast once you start treating it! It's no fun with cats, though, since it can spread so fast. I just finished giving the girls another lime dip! No rest for the wicked, eh? Hope you're doing great!

    I remember your mother-in-law adopting the kittens! They're so pretty. Is it already 3 years ago? At 3:47 that's one of the bows you made with Lilly fabric, right? Just perfect.

      Yes, you have a GREAT memory! Those cats were the same bottle babies that were rescued from a construction site here in Orlando, and she adopted two of them. And I did make those Lilly Pulitzer bows for the first event that we did with the store about 3 years ago. xoxo

    My rescue told me eucalyptus and lemon oil are toxic to cats so I’ve been avoiding using in my home. Good to know they’re ok!

    You work so hard...well done. My kittens are 5 weeks old this friday, but their mama is feeding them ! I hope they start eating soon..Poor mama has got quite skinny (she came to me only 2 weeks before she delivered), although I've started giving her my own recipe of boiled chicken, boiled chicken livers, and boiled carrots all blended......expensive. What do you feed your kitties on?

    • @KittenSchool
      @KittenSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What a lucky momma cat to have you caring for her! I feed my fosters a high-quality canned food mixed with kibble, and the brands vary since I get donations or shop for what is on sale. But I look for ones with the most nutritious ingredients. For a treat they get scrambled eggs. Sometimes I will buy some sliced turkey for an extra treat, too, but we are vegetarians so we don't have meat in the house. I also add a bit of safflower oil a few times a week because it has a lot of good fats. Thanks for the comment! Hope your mom and kittens continue to thrive. They should be eating on their own soon!

    Hi there ! If you have the time I would love help with an issue. We just adopted 2 beauties and they are ringworm and roundworm positive. Their foster mom took them to a vet and dewormed and rechecked stool and said there were no signs of ringworm but alas here we are, I guess it happens. They are being treated but it's at least 3 weeks of treatment. The vet is recommending keeping them quarantined in one room until they are no longer contagious, which would be at least 3 weeks. Since they are new to us, we are so happy that they just started letting us play with them and cuddle and they love hanging out with us. I would hate to isolate them for so many weeks. If we change their litter box every day and sanitize it and everything else in our apartment and wash our hands anytime we're in contact, can we continue letting them enjoy the apartment? Thank you and bless you for any help you have to offer. I just want the kitties to be healthy and happy, without me or my husband getting sick. Final question, do you think we should bathe them too? Dr is treating with topical cream, oral antifungal and oral deworming meds for now. I was thinking a bath would help them clear out any spores, eggs but no groomer will take them until they're cleared and I don't have want them to associate us with a torture bath. Thank you again !!

    So wouldnt your whole house be infected with the ringworm and your not getting ringworm cause you’re touching them with your naked hand just asking kinda confused

  • @vanierstreetcats4929
    @vanierstreetcats4929 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can diagnose Ringworm as a rescuer yourself and all cats that have it should be segregated this can also spread to humans.
    I don't know how you work with your vet in your country but where I am I'm fortunate to have information so that I can treat in house, I run a sanctuary I am not a stranger to having over 35 cats in care all at once.
    And now I have just under 20...so if you want to make sure that the fungal infection doesn't spread you need to segregate, and you need to have an anti-fungal cream on hand. In Canada, I can purchase over-the-counter medication for women's yeast infection a topical cream that is the same thing as what the vet prescribes called Canastan or you can also use Monistat.
    I keep it on hand always along with other over-the-counter medications for humans that work on cats that my vet offered as pharmaceutical solutions to reduce my cost but also prevent the spread of a common problem that is very viral in the house.
    There are ways to find out and then cut the costs but also if it's a repeat issue it may not be Ringworm it could be feline HPV which presents similar to Ringworm and can be misdiagnosed without a biopsy.
    BTW I run a cat rescue and have for over 20 years in Canada I'm not giving advice out of thin air and its prudent to always check information but also to discuss it with your vet as well.

    Those kittens were nowhere near old enough to be neutered or spayed. I don’t care what the money hungry clinic told you.
    You should look at the studies for the past 10 years showing that this practice is harming long term canine and feline health as you are disrupting the endocrine system and in males disrupting the testosterone levels which determine bone health and many other long term health aspects.
    It’s really worrisome how uninformed the community in cat rescue is about cat HEALTH, and the vets that don’t help either.
    What the majority of cat rescue are cat “managing” not helping them thrive.
