If you’re getting oil past the rings on cyl 1, maybe a ring land is cracked from that event that broke the electrode letting that oil pass by. Often times when scoping the piston, it can look fine from the top but have damage to the ring land.

@@accordv6er The EA839 platform is 5 years old now, plenty of cars above 100k miles, and major issues/failures seem to be a rarity. Even more rare in folks who are not beating the absolute death out of their cars. If your plan is to buy an SQ5 as a daily, and occasionally rip it on a backroad, there's no real reason not to. I bought a used '18 S5 this year, and apart from moving the maintenance schedule up 10k (to account for unknown maintenance from previous owners,) I don't have any real concerns about this thing. If your plan is to take it to stage 3+ and hit the track constantly, just make sure you get one with low mileage and do all the preventative work up-front (intercooler, injectors, etc.) I would comfortably call Adam a pioneer in the platform, and he has used the hell out of his machine, upgraded it beyond what 99.9% of owners have, and only just now run into a major concern. That's pretty good for any modern platform, honestly.
I sold my 19 s5 8 month ago because of similar issues. I was on pure750 for more than a year and first 6 month were trouble free. Then had a failed stock injector, month later car would start misfire on 3 cylinders. Spark plugs were completely black when i pulled them out, replaced them with aftermarket ones. Nothing changed, later i noticed oil in my cylinders. Decided to sell it before ill need a new angine and transmission. It was my weekend car and loved to drive it, but going stage 3 we gotta know the risk of it. Good luck with your s4 and i hope nothing major is wrong with it.
Similar situation here, sold my 18 B9 S4 around 8-9 months ago, turbo failure and a few other things, the price they wanted to repair just wasn't worth it, they only value these cars at like $40k or so anyways and when repairs are like $10-12k, it's better to just walk away then to spend like 20% of the cars value on repairs.

Did you compression check the cylinder? Wouldn't be surprised with DI injector problems, Bmw B58 guys are changing them out as preventative maintenance now.
Can you inspect cylinder 1 from behind? I know the Porsche community often check for bore scoring from the sump because this is where it start and you may not see it from the sparkplug hole. Bore scoring is also a cause for higher oil consumption.
I would be assuming that you popped the piston rings and the only way to confirm that is pulling the heads and dropping the pan… but I’m sure that has already been talked about
My b9 with 51k miles just blew up. Blew up a spark plug. One cyl. at 40psi and scoring on cylinders. IE tune stage 2. Downpipe, intercooler, intake. Sucks

@Vancity Audi thank you buddy, I'm working on 11's, and funny enough my last drag day hit the news. They referenced both me and Theo beating the same Hellcat Durango! Good times!!! 🤣
@Vancity Audi auto evolution. Okay, maybe not local news, but everyone made me aware of it two days after the race. They took a video filmed locally from the drag race and made a story on it. Took some liberties on it. It's kind of a funny story.
@@SouthdownGarage Ahh, so an online digital publication. The few times my cars made it on those, they reported so many incorrect things. I reached out to them to have them all corrected.
I was having weird up tics in rpm’s in first when coming to an stop and then got a bank 1 lean check engine light. Carter modified the tune and it seems to be running a hell of a lot better but now I’m worried about it after seeing this.
To me it looks like the plug tip was consumed (i.e., burned away) rather than broken off. Without compression (due to non-firing cylinder) the rings won't seal properly, letting some oil blow by. That's probably the best case scenario. Let's hope it was a loose spark plug or some other easy fix!
@@VancityAudi Not an expert, but have screwed up and owned plenty of bum engines in the past: Oil low by on a plug thick and crusty and happens almost immediately. The first replacement plug (6:48) has a thin matte coating as if though it's running cool or the A/F was too rich. The second replacement plug (7:38) looks fine to me. The top two rings are compression rings and the oil control rings sit further down on the piston. So damaging only the oil control ring(s) and not the compression ring(s) seems unlikely (that static compression is within 10% across all cylinders says the compression rings are likely OK). What happened to kick this all off? Might never know and there might have been multiple failures. If it were me I'd redo the static compression test and then do the leak down test. If both are within factory spec for all cylinders I'd continue to check the plug every few days of normal driving.
@SAL Ninethousand ya, a leak down test is definitely in my future. I'll be pulling the spark plug again tomorrow, but from what I've seen over the past couple of weeks, it continually goes back to being black.
Same thing happened to me, weird compression, replaced plugs and packs, no dash lights, but you could hear the misfire, took a scope to it and nothing, just a little bit of oil, but my poison rings went, after replacing the rings (6k later) drove it for 5 months, checked my plugs again and was missing the bottom of the plug, did a scope and walls were scratched ☹️
Did you do a leak down test? I had a similar failure in my RS3. I lost an electrode and whilst it didn’t do any harm to my ring gland, it crated a hot spot on my head which caused misfire - have you inspected your head?
Cracked piston/damaged land. Pushing pressure behind ring, land is wallowed, ring edge starts to roll and bleed. Surprised there's no timing correction. Stupid n14 mini engines were awful about out of round cyl leaving lots of oil/vapor in combustion. Wish you the best sir. Sucks when it's a daily
I popped my motor last November. Was still under cpo warranty and extended warranty. First dealership tried to screw me on the motor. Had it towed to another dealership that thankfully got the motor approved by Audi. Now I'm just waiting for it to make the boat ride over.
It was still stock, turned out it was the NON ISSUE rocker arms lol. Audi would not let them open the motor, but we could see at least three broken rockers from the exhaust ports.
This is a really tough situation especially with a DD. Definitely appreciate the PSA as many of us have experienced similar situations where our DD driver somehow turned into our race track money pit. It's actually pretty amazing how much power we can get out of stock motors these day, finding the balance for the DD is the real challenge as we all want to go faster....... I truly hope you can find a "a cost effective" solution that fits what you're looking for. After I saw your video I dialed back all of my cars to 93 octane tunes.
@@VancityAudi Do you think the pump gas(what octane) contributed to this failer? bad Gas on boosted cars is a quick recipe for disasture. when you first mentioned the issue my first thought was pump gas strikes again
@jeffzuccarell9420 nope. When running an E70 blend, only 30% of the fuel is actually pump gas, and I always run Shell's new to us V-Power Nitro+ 93 octane fuel. I've done extensive testing and it's the best fuel we have locally.
Adam quick question for you is there any real benefit to a full exhaust setup like the Milltek sport/ or IE midpipes or is it more for sound. I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth putting the money into it.
@portershredz of course! The main reason I made this channel was to help others get better performance out of their cars, as well as to prevent future problems. My failure was cylinder 1 though, not 6.
I've been daily driving it since the failure. I've downgraded to the 91 octane tune. Still oil in the cylinder. Car has trouble starting sometimes. I haven't put more than 10lbs of boost through it. Drives totally normal though. Once my RS3 is fixed and on the track we'll look into fixing the B9.
What spark plugs were in the car (the one that failed)? Also, did the injector shop give you any flow data that you could compare to a reference to see if it was maybe partially clogged? Sorry to hear about the motor.
I showed a photo of the spark plugs I was using in the video, along with their part #. As for flow data, I haven't picked up the injector yet from testing. Plus, they have nothing to compare it against. When I get a chance, I am going to bring in a brand new AQ injector and have them test against that.
@@VancityAudi I can only see a partial number on one of the pics and google doesn't pull anything up. Was curious what plug it was as there seem to be a lot of RS7 plug tip failures across many VAG platforms.
Hate to break it to you, but every tuner out there now has B9 S4's, S5's and SQ5's that have blown up. Stock, APR, Unitronic, Integrated Engineering as well as 034 Motorsport have all had blown motors.

Appreciate the quick reply. Guessing you left this platform which is unfortunate as I enjoyed your vids. enjoy the MK8. Such a fun, tuner friendly platform.
I’ve heard from reputable engine builders that excessive cylinder pressures can cause hyper-wear on spark plug electrodes. It very well may have electrically burnt to that length over the course of thousands of ignition events at high rpms.
@Cuprone if either of those things took place you would have heard about it on the channel. We've found a replacement engine and will be doing the swap next week!
Maybe the block is split somewhere…for vw/Audi motors usually 100 pound feet per cylinder is where the limit is…you’ve been sending it at over 600 lb.ft for a while now so maybe you just found the limit.
Highly, highly doubtful. There are a sh$t ton of B9's running at the same power level I am, some for even longer than I have been with nothing happening that extreme.

I have! I've seen people buy plugs like that from Amazon and Ebay. Luckily, we buy all of our parts through dealers and well-known automotive suppliers, so we know that wasn't the issue.
Maybe the broken spark plug piece damaged the valve guide/seal on its way out? That may cause oil leak too isn’t it? Anyway, hope nothing is too serious and you’ll be back to 100% in no time!
Thank you very much for the offer. Would the flow rates be affected by running water rather than fuel? Are these injectors meant to have water flowing through them?
@@VancityAudi Water and fuel have similar enough density and viscosity so I wouldn't expect flow to be affected. I'm sure it isn't recommended by the manufacturer but as long as there is plenty of time to dry before placing them back into service.

Sadly no, I suffered another catastrophic failure the following week, which I'll be sharing on my channel this week.
Happy I traded my ADs back for AQs before I installed a month ago. If there's a revision, there's a reason
Glad to hear it
I felt so bad when I heard this news from Marcus when we were filming a review.
I hope your able to get your vehicle up and going again soon.
I also will not run my Explorer without data logging, 100% watch your stuff, take care of your car, my buddy blew up his Explorer by not watching the data, had oil pressure issues for a year.
Yes you know the guy I'm talking about 😂
🤣 Yes, I do know who you're talking about. All the best with your Explorer build.
@Vancity Audi thank you buddy, I'm working on 11's, and funny enough my last drag day hit the news. They referenced both me and Theo beating the same Hellcat Durango!
Good times!!! 🤣
@@SouthdownGarage the news?
@Vancity Audi auto evolution. Okay, maybe not local news, but everyone made me aware of it two days after the race.
They took a video filmed locally from the drag race and made a story on it. Took some liberties on it. It's kind of a funny story.
@@SouthdownGarage Ahh, so an online digital publication. The few times my cars made it on those, they reported so many incorrect things. I reached out to them to have them all corrected.
Thank you. much appreciated. Good luck.
You're welcome and thanks
I was having weird up tics in rpm’s in first when coming to an stop and then got a bank 1 lean check engine light. Carter modified the tune and it seems to be running a hell of a lot better but now I’m worried about it after seeing this.
Just do a quick check on all your spark plugs. Glad Carter was able to help you out.
To me it looks like the plug tip was consumed (i.e., burned away) rather than broken off. Without compression (due to non-firing cylinder) the rings won't seal properly, letting some oil blow by. That's probably the best case scenario. Let's hope it was a loose spark plug or some other easy fix!
Any idea why my plug would be turning black still then if there was no damage and the spark plug was consumed?
@@VancityAudi Not an expert, but have screwed up and owned plenty of bum engines in the past:
Oil low by on a plug thick and crusty and happens almost immediately.
Any updates on the S4?
Same thing happened to me, weird compression, replaced plugs and packs, no dash lights, but you could hear the misfire, took a scope to it and nothing, just a little bit of oil, but my poison rings went, after replacing the rings (6k later) drove it for 5 months, checked my plugs again and was missing the bottom of the plug, did a scope and walls were scratched ☹️
Uggggggh, so sorry!
Did you do a leak down test? I had a similar failure in my RS3. I lost an electrode and whilst it didn’t do any harm to my ring gland, it crated a hot spot on my head which caused misfire - have you inspected your head?
We haven't yet, no. We will eventually though.
Thank you very much.
check your roller rockers as its a well known problem on the range of the turbo s4 and turbo rs4
There is nothing wrong with my rockers. I talked about this in the video.
Adam VAGtechnik made a video of the b9 s4 engine tear down with roller rockers. Def worth the watch. Hopefully just injectors bro 🤞🏽
@@JoeyS5 This has absolutely nothing to do with my rockers.
@Joey those cars with shit rockers falling apart and breaking cam shafts are on 2017 an 18 cars I believe. Audi fixed the issue for 19
@@HVACRTECH-83 my car is an early model 2018 build and I don't have any rocker issues.
I popped my motor last November. Was still under cpo warranty and extended warranty. First dealership tried to screw me on the motor. Had it towed to another dealership that thankfully got the motor approved by Audi. Now I'm just waiting for it to make the boat ride over.
Was your car tuned, or was it still stock?
It was still stock, turned out it was the NON ISSUE rocker arms lol. Audi would not let them open the motor, but we could see at least three broken rockers from the exhaust ports.
@@bryanpopp7878 Brutal! Glad it was eventually taken care of!
@@bryanpopp7878Hopefully you got everything worked out. What year is your car?
So it had plug failure on cylinder 1 but is oiling cylinder 5? Where does the pcv system join the intake manifold? Could be pulling oil through that
You must have misheard me somewhere along the way. Cylinder 5 has always been fine visually. I just see corrections on the logs.
@@VancityAudi ah makes more sense, hope it didnt have ringland failure
This is a really tough situation especially with a DD. Definitely appreciate the PSA as many of us have experienced similar situations where our DD driver somehow turned into our race track money pit. It's actually pretty amazing how much power we can get out of stock motors these day, finding the balance for the DD is the real challenge as we all want to go faster....... I truly hope you can find a "a cost effective" solution that fits what you're looking for. After I saw your video I dialed back all of my cars to 93 octane tunes.
Thank you. I hope so too. Please keep in mind these failures happened to pump gas tuned local B9's as well.
Just sound. No power will be gained.
Did you get rid of the b9 s4?
No, I've shared on IG and FB what we tried to do with it recently.
Hello adam, i see you're going with a new daily driver. Are you departing from you're s4?
And if so, is the tte810 for sale?
We will be attempting to fix the S4 and running a 9 second 1/4 mile before we sell the car.
Sounds good, I'm working on my b9, I'm always looking for deals. Pure turbo has 50% off for black Friday. Might get that 750 for discounted price.
Any updates on this? Was it the Cyl 6 timing pull issue that caused it rather than injector failure?
Sadly I don't have an answer for you yet. We're doing an engine swap next week and I'll be back at it with some more content with the B9 S4.
When you do have an answer, will you divulge what the cause of the failure was? @@VancityAudi
@portershredz of course! The main reason I made this channel was to help others get better performance out of their cars, as well as to prevent future problems. My failure was cylinder 1 though, not 6.
Hi Adam. Any updates on your s4?
@@dirk5950 clear as day at 5:26. You can't run RS7 plugs in this motor. The required plugs are very specific.
@@VancityAudi Ah, went by so fast I missed it. Sorry and thanks for clarifying.
@@dirk5950 You're welcome. I just assumed people would pause the video if they wanted the part #. Thanks for watching.
Do a leak down test on that cylinders
how many miles are you at?
51,000 miles
Are those oem spark plugs
I show in the video which spark plugs I was using.
We’ll looks like all IE B9s are blowing up, 034 it seems to be the way to go.
Hate to break it to you, but every tuner out there now has B9 S4's, S5's and SQ5's that have blown up. Stock, APR, Unitronic, Integrated Engineering as well as 034 Motorsport have all had blown motors.
may have a tweaked rod or damaged ring land..
Damaged ring we think
From what I’ve heard , aftermarket market coils are a downgrade vs oem. They fail often.
I have the aq injectors so finger 🤞🏻.I’ll be datalogging the car more often thx to your video. Hope everything turns out positive with your s4.
I’ll be trying mine for the 1st time on e with dr2’s. Hope I’ll get a 9 second pass 🤞🏻
You'll need to remove some weight and cut a solid 60ft to achieve a 9. Changing to the CTS coil packs eliminated some of the corrections I was seeing so in my case, they helped.
@@VancityAudi passenger seat and rear seats are gone. Everything in trunk is removed as well. It’ll be my first time on e and dr’s so I’ll try my best.
Good decision!
That’s crazy, just had this happen about a month and a half ago in my mk7 gti and the motor is blown
Faaaaaaack, I'm really sorry to hear that.
What fuel were you running when this happened?
E70
Appreciate the quick reply. Guessing you left this platform which is unfortunate as I enjoyed your vids. enjoy the MK8. Such a fun, tuner friendly platform.
@@spacecased91 I haven't left. I've shared in multiple social media posts that were repairing this car, will run a 9 and then sell it.
I’ve heard from reputable engine builders that excessive cylinder pressures can cause hyper-wear on spark plug electrodes. It very well may have electrically burnt to that length over the course of thousands of ignition events at high rpms.
It broke off and damaged the rings.
@@VancityAudiYou have finally sold the S4 right?
Did you repair the engine or how did you make the sale?
thank you
😢
@Cuprone if either of those things took place you would have heard about it on the channel. We've found a replacement engine and will be doing the swap next week!
@@VancityAudi good luck and thanks for answering!!!!
Thanks and no problemo
My b9 s5 had an injector fail; corrosion all on the end of it. Unfortunately new injector didn’t fix it.. have to dig deeper 😐
I'm very sorry to hear this. Good luck with the repairs!
Any updates 👀

I traded my B9 in. Was eating metal from the cam sprockets. If you're stage 3 you're just asking for problems.
Sorry to hear that!
My car is literally sitting at 034 right now, TTE810 and everything else going in.... then this video pops up, yikes LOL :D
Good luck!
oh man...sad to hear.
Hey Adam, Have you ever heard the story of the fake chinese NGK plugs that look almost identical to the real ones? Even the boxes are almost identical
That could be it as well.
Its the E fuel wrecking the injectors and then obviously resulting in engine damage.
Considering we've seen multiple failures of the exact same nature running pump gas, I'd have to disagree.
What Ethanol content does your pump fuel have ?
Yeah man you fried a ring
That's my guess too
dang detonation! need just betta software
As I mentioned in the video, we've seen it in stock cars, Stage 1 cars, and Stage 3 cars. It has nothing to do with the software.
@@VancityAudi too much ignition timing, also ignition retardation table too much recalibrated, so there is 0 knock correction, but there is knock.
@4TK RACE guess you'll need to speak to Audi about their calibrations, seeing as we've seen this issue on stock B9's as well.
Detonation is always top of the list for most engine damage. That a part can fail stock at a different rate does not change that.
Bummer dude, always scary modifying your daily to this certain extent.
Ya, it's always a risk, no doubt. I'm just very surprised this is happening to so many other people as well.
We can test your injectors at 300psi (with water, not fuel), but my company is in Texas. Shoot me a message if you are interested.
❤
Its a love hate relationship with the b9’s :(
Agreed
I didnt even watch the video but the thumbnail dont look goodd 😮
If watching this guy taught me it’s to not buy an Audi 😭😭😂
I'd think the same thing! lol
DAZA ftw
LMAO. You won't be saying that when you see one of my upcoming videos.
So keep my b9 s4 stock then yeah 😂
As I mentioned in the video, we've had a completely stock B9 S4 fail in the exact same way.
Looks like motor kaput...🙄
LOL
What's so funny? Don't think I made one joke in this entire video. If anything, it was boring and not funny.
