  • The philodendron white knight is a an easy and accessible “rare plant” that I recommend for beginners. There’s a lot of beauty in its intricate color combination and it variegates beautifully. I share the full care tips for this plant, as well as propagate this in moss and directly into aroid potting mix. To keep things interesting, I also propagate some in a propagation box! I share lots of propagation tips along the way, and show you a satisfying update of the propagation 3 months later.

    I have a white knight, white Princess, and white wizard all planted together. So I have a white “kingdom,” and I want to make a red kingdom with my pink Princess and plants I’ll eventually get: prince of orange, burgundy princess, and imperial red. Royal Queen (new red) would also work.

    I'm glad to hear about the charcoal on the wound, I've found cinnamon that was recommended by others to not work well. - and yes, I always reuse my potting soil and have never had a problem. The peat moss takes 1,000 years to create, so is not even close to sustainable.

    I keep a lot of planted aquariums and I know that there are a variety of beneficial bacteria in the substrate. I don’t know why so many people are worried about bacteria in the soil. There are a few kinds of good bacteria in the soil will eat up any organics and turn them into food for the plant. Your latest interview with the long haired artist from Shanghai is right on point with beneficial bacteria. It is important for growers to mix used substrate with the new to hasten the denitrifying process to fully benefit the plant.

    • @onlyplants

      True… but sometimes the harmful bacteria especially that manifest on the leaves causing defects, I try to treat where possible - but not always 😀

    Hello, thanks for your video. I have a philodendron White Knight in my home and it‘s really beautiful. I cut it to have a baby knight for my daughter who keeps it ininorganic substrat. Which is also fine. Vut I think it‘s interesting that you mentioned that more furtilizer produces less variegation. As the plants kept in inorganic substrate always gets furtilizer I told my daughter about it. Some of her plants became greener durong the last time even though they started with a lot of variegation. So I am thankful about your experience and that you share it with us all. 😊

    • @sabbirs2423
      @sabbirs2423 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not more fertilizer in general, its the Nitrogen that promotes green leaves, you can use fertilizer mix that has less nitrogen.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Do increase light and use fertilizer with less nitrogen ratio to encourage more variegation. And if it reverts, worth to cut it up and start over the lower nodes should put out variegation

      @@onlyplants it might be a spontaneous mutation from TC or a hybrid between other different cultivars (like Red Anderson which is a hybrid between Pink Princess and White Wizard). This plant has so many cultivars it seems it mutates easily. There are the ones I know of: Pink Princess, White Wizard, White Knight, White Princess, Red Anderson, Golden Goddess, Painted Lady, Black Cardinal, Chocolate, Ruby, Imperial Red, Red Emerald and Green Emerald... but I can feel there are many others. It's almost like Epipremnum aureum!

    • @alexisthorne4407

      @@onlyplants Unfortunately - as often - there's no patent to be found. As far as I know though, the 'White Knight' - along with the Princesses and the Wizard - are ascribed to Robert McColley. He created an insane amount of different hybrids in his nursery in Florida, mostly in the 70's. Some of which he had patented, most he had not. Some of his patents include the 'Painted Lady' and the 'Black Cardinal'. Almost every patent describes the parentage as follows: "[...] parentage included Philodendron hastatum, erubescens, wendlandi, imbe and an unidentified species."
      For those who are interested: You can find copies of each patent on google by simply tiping the name of the cultivar and/or "Robert McColley" resp. "Cora McColley" (some patents were formed by his wife after his death)+ "patent".
      Isn't it frustrating not to know the parentage... always bums me out a little 🙄
      Last but not least: Love your videos, Sean! Please keep up the great work. You're one of the few that offer in depth knowledge. Your love for plants really comes across in your videos and that's just heart warming ☺

    I reported my white knight, scared to propergate, it has grown so tall, not any white leaves on it, did accidentally break a leaf off and what looked like blood came out. On one video I watched of yours you suggested if that happens to put charcol on the spit to stop it from spreading. Have lots of noise on the plant to start new ones, but scared I may damage it. I love this plant, I have one I bought for $15 AUD last year as a 3 leaf cutting, it's now growing massively. It has aerial roots growing every where, but I cant get my self to chop it. It's too pretty, I know I have to do it soon, and I will when summer starts here. I find that the pure white variegated part of the leaf is actually stays a little longer and I can enjoy looking at it longer than a variegated Monstera leaf that seems to die off. quicker.

      Sebenernya propagating plants tidak butuh fertilizer, malah kadang bisa bakar akar nya. Tapi untuk slow release fertilizer kayak osmocote aman karena dia butuh waktu bulan2an baru ada efek nya. Sifat nya slow release.

    Love your videos Sean! Informative and always entertaining. I’ve had a White Knight for about 10 months now, it’s put out half moon leaves, a few pure white ones and even a half moon that was green and pink. Unfortunately every time that happens those white and pink parts always start to brown in spots slowly going over the whole leaf causing them to shrivel up and die off. Never the green part. All the other leaves look great. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would incorporate fungicide spray on the leaves as a routine.. every 1-3 months will do. I find it cuts down these fungal infections a lot when I treat all my plants with this spray. They are not particularly harmful to us too.

      It can be a variety of reasons… from the environment, stress from sudden change, insufficient or over fertilizing etc…

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use chemicals or natural pesticide. But actually fungus gnats are signs of overwatering. Try to keep the surface of soil dry, you can do this by bottom watering or letting the plant dry out more. Dry topsoil will prevent gnats from laying eggs, breaking their life cycle

    I just got my first white knight (and white princess) days ago as top cuttings so this could not be more perfect timing!! I'm down south in the USA so I moved them outside for the higher humidity to help them grow roots. I'm a little worried since they have lots of nubs but no aireal roots. I'm rooting them in perlite. After watching this I'm thinking about moving them right to my aroid mix. Thank you so much for this video! You are always so wonderful and informative! After watching this I am much less nervous 😊 Thanks Sean and happy planting 🌺

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Higher Humidity will encourage healthy aerial roots, which makes propagation easier later 😀 but I find they dont need nearly as much humidity as other aroids

      @@onlyplants Hello Sean. Oh man, I am such a mess. I got a greenhouse to encourage growth like I mentioned, and killed like 10 of my favorite plants 😭😭😭 My white princess, white knight, verri burle Marx, philo silver sword..and so many more. I am such a mess. The money wasted is a whole separate issue. They were my favorite ones! I thought I had acclimated them well but apparently not. SO stupid! Most of them are crispy and just crumble away when you touch them. Some, like the white knight, had no roots yet. I don't think there is any life in them, but how can I best help them recover from sun stress if there is? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Sean. (Not so) Happy planting, lol 🌺

    Can I apply activated charcoal on a wound and then propagate it in water without any issues?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I usually dont sterilize wound when propagating in water. I felt like it the water would wash away the charcoal anyway 😅

    Thank you for the video. It is very informatove. I do have a question about lighting. What do you do for the White Knights at night. Do you have to have a light on it 24/7 so it does not lose the variegation? Besides days time indirect light... what kind of lighting can you or do you meed to use?
    Thank you again for the very helpful video.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ohh no you dont have to light it at night. Ive never measured light but you really want to give it very bright conditions without it being direct light. Artificial light of any kind works too its a matter of strength of bulb and distance from it. With some experience you can be able to gauge a good light level for the plant. It can actually thrive in a wide range of light level

    Hi Sean, do your white knights tend to get brown spots? They don't spread to other plants in my cabinet though.

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes they are a bit prone to bacterial spots. But after few sprays of neem oil and fungicide, Ive never seen those come back. They are somewhat infectious. Some philodendrons like the birkin is prone to the same bacteria
