Morton Grove though? Do they have 2 locations? I thought they only had the city location on the north side. I thought they were in Lincoln Park. Anyway, you need to go to the one in Lincoln Park.
You need to try Nancy's, Giordano's, Bartoli's, Geno's East, and Bacino's, for deep dish and stuffed. You know there is stuffed pizza and then there is deep dish and they are 2 different, right? And you need to try some other thin crust places like Home Run Inn, Aurelio's, D'Agostino's. Also, a real NYC style Italian Deli called Freddy's in Cicero is a must, where you can get Sicilian style pizza and other types of pizza and authentic Italian Deli items like Arancini, etc. Discovering Chicago food is all about going beyond the tourist trap local chains in the loop and north side by venturing out all over the city and suburbs for those diamonds in the rough.

My favorite pizza is the thin crust tavern style pizza at De Marinis Pizzeria in Menominee Falls. Originally, there was a De Marinis in Bay View. The owners had kids, and the kids split with 2 different locations. The best recipe went to Mama's De Marinis (I think), but it ended up closing. There is still a Dom and Phil's De Marinis, but I don't think they have the authentic recipe. I wish I could find out what the recipe is, as I live in San Diego. I think the best can still be had at the one in Menominee Falls.

Mark, Giardiniera is a mix of veggies and not a style of peppers. It is a mix of chopped vegetables, mostly cauliflower, carrots bell peppers, celery & chile peppers in pickled vinegar first, then olive oil is added later. I grew up in a Sicilian/German family in NYC. My Dads, mom, and dad lived upstairs she used to make this from scratch. I am just 70 years old, and I miss her version of this. The store-bought version of it is a far cry from hers. She passed away back in June of 1968, she passed away just a few days after her 68th Birthday. I was 15 years old, I had just graduated from grammar school and would be going into High School in September.
Cannot tolerate the heat in my old age but there is nothing better than home made giardiniera. When the veggies are gone, you can add fresh to the oil and make more.
Oh yeah, gotta say that i have lived in chicago for almost 30 years and the food scene is awesome. Pizza is something that is pretty awesome at so many great places. Uno's, Lou's, Giordanos, Pequods, sure.....all so good. But dont forget places like Jimmys, Spacca Napoli, Piece and Georges. All amazing. Cant go wrong!
Oh man, that veggie pizza at Lou Monati's looks AWESOME!!! i love meat, but I wouldnt miss it at all on that pizza! love how they they mix spinach with basi and cheese, and the cheddar cheese, and whole layer of rough cut mushrooms, then vine ripened tomatoes, holy cow! then butter crust?!!! I gotta eat here.
I'm usually a Pequods girl but the Lou at Lou Malnati's is unmatched. My favorite is to get the Lou on thin crust - the butter crust is incredible every time. Thanks for coming to our city, Mark! You're amazing :)
Wow, Mark! What a real treat this was! I am from New England, known as the "Pizza Belt", but I also LOVE me a good Chicago-style pizza, both deep-dish & thin-crust! 😁😋
Oh yessssss! Me too and yes it is!!! I love it soooo much I ordered it online n I love in Saint Louis, MO! I also had my friends boyfriend to bring me a pizza when he came up from Chicago…. Paid $73 for a medium I think, but it’s sooooo good❣️it’s the cheese for me😍🙏🏾💪🏾🫶🏽💚
You did a great job of exactly nailing the best of Chicago pizza, Mark! These are our choices as well. I like how you go into the kitchens, when allowed, and show the process! This makes it even more interesting and appreciative of what goes into making a specialty. Carry on!
Chicago tavern speaks for itself. Look at his reaction to nicks pizza, and he’s like making crazy faces, and making sounds. And you see him quickly eating the pizza. It’s also in a weird flavor too, so I can only imagine if he got the pizza in the flavors he likes.
I sat down with my plate of brats and pork n beans w/potato chips, mac & cheese, and a root beer float while it started, smashed that during the deep dish part. Here I sit empty plate during the tavern style and watching got me hungry! Time for round 2! I love this series Mark! Thank you for the awesomely edited instant classic!
Mark this Chicago series was extra special having your brother inlaw team up with you. Always enjoy your culinary explorations- Thanks. Mark in South Carolina
I was surprised Derek didn't take you to get pizza on the last video, but I'm glad you did it this way, hitting up the well known places. Lots of less known outside of the Chicagoland area but all so good. Supposedly tavern style didn't originate in Chicago, but it along with the so called "square cut" (the way Vito and Nick's pizza was cut) is as much a part of Chicagoland as deep dish.
So funny how Mark is not from the Chi but nails the choices for pizza spots while showing native chi towners like myself other places to indulge in on my return home in the summer🥰
I remember waiting for hours outside in the wind and cold in that tiny little pit in front of Pizzeria Uno, and not for one second thinking it wasn't worth it! So fun you went there Mark!! Loved this and the memories it brought back from my childhood!!
I ate at Uno and Malnati's in the early '80s. Disclaimer. I'm a NYC boy. They were both exceptional pizzas! Fresh ingredients and amazing dough. I don't have any complaints. BUT, and you know their would be, there are two kinds of NYC pizza that no one can touch. The basic 2 slices for $5 NY thin crust pie and then nobody makes a pie like a NY Sicilian pie. A big thick Sicilian pie incorporates all those things you talked about such as fresh ingredients, DUH, and a thick crust with a crusty layer of cheese around the outside. I think what makes a NY pie the best is the crust and the fresh in house mozzarella. Tomato sauce made by people who care, NY and Chicago, are amazing sauces.
Us chicagoans eat thin slice pizza on the regular, deep dish is like special occasion pizza and for tourists , but if the Super Bowl on and we order pizza it’s thin slice, we eat deep dish probably once a year maybe twice lol
Being a truck driver from Mississippi. I tried Lou malnatis one time when I was in Chicago and was very impressed ! Def worth the price for sure ! I loved the buttery crust ! I order them online at least twice year just to have them at home. Can remember the taste while watching your video. 😂 what a Great video ! BRB. Bout to go order some online rn
Honestly, they’re all pretty good pizza places my favorite is Lou Malnati‘s, but it’s because I like the thin crust. That butter crust is amazing no matter what.
Mark, I am a Chicago native, and must say BIL Derrick really hooked it up. Crazy to think you have more content with Au Cheval and Ricobenes (Just from the intros, I can tell you really got to the right spots!)
Thank you for showing the thin crust too. Most people just mention the deep dish, but thin is probably more popular with locals. It's the pizza most bars/pubs make. Both are great. There are so many places to get pizza in the city, probably only 2nd to NYC.
More like 2 or 300. Ahahaaaa!!!ahhaaaaaahaaaahaaahaaaagaa!!!ahaaahaaaaaaaaaahaaaahhaaahaa! Cus it’s good. Do you get it!? I said because it’s good! Lmfao ahahhaaaavvlolololol
I grew up eating Vito and nicks. My grandpa called it Nick and Vito’s for some reason. Place looks exactly the same as I remember it 30 years ago minus the cigarette machine that was by the door. Amazing pizza
Lou Malnati's alone has ~75 total locations. A small handful of them downtown have tourists as patrons. We, the locals, have been keeping them in business all these years.
*For some reason i feel that this is the most beautiful video that Mark has ever made. Its like all the history and legacy of Chicago (a city that i love), is encapsulated in this video. And HUGE props to Miss Rose, the owner of Vito's & Nick's, that woman is a LEGEND! Been watching her in food videos for almost 10 years now and she is STILL at it, giving out the same energy and hospitality. Love you Mark and love you Chicago* ❤
I live only a few miles from Vito & Nick’s. That place is legendary and well known for Chicagoans. I love that he didn’t just do the touristy deep dish pizza. Real Chicagoans know it’s all about the tavern cut.
Great video. The Uno guy is right, in most cities with respect to the most popular toppings, pepperoni generally rules. But in Chicago the Italian sausage is king, and this applied to both their deep dish and thin crust varieties.
non nominare Italia questo è semplicemente il vostro cibo noi italiani ste cose le vediamo solo da voi guardano questi video specie chi è a dieta questo cibo ti blocca l'appetito e aiuta a continuare la dieta
Lou’s hands down always makes my mouth salivate. I literally had to hold my chin. The flavor and texture of Lou’s pizza crust is unmatched to others, along with the rest of the amazing ingredients.
I grew up on Vito and Nick's- their sausage has a super-fresh fennel taste to it, and their giardiniera gives the perfect amount of heat (without being overbearing). If you ever do a Chicago SUBURB episode, definitely check out Auerlio's (the OTHER pizza I grew up on).
Now I crave deep dish pizza! It is always great to see you teaming up with Derek. He is also delightful and I'm sure it's great to visit with your sister and him.
Love your videos and have been following you since the beginning but have a bone to pick with you. As lovely as it is that you introduce the staff in the restaurants you visit, many of us have noticed that your lovely wife and gorgeous little guy travel with you most if not all of the time, we kind of see them from an angle sometimes across the table or sitting at another table when your doing your review but you never introduce them and that is extremely rude. We would love you to acknowledge them with a shout out, introduction they could say hi, give a wave and it would be the respectful, loving and courteous thing for you to do (and it was my little daughter who noticed it and that says quite a lot because we're very big on manners)
I’ve had Chicago pizza in Chicago… it’s absolutly amazing! You just can’t get it or make it the same elsewhere. And here in eastern Canada it’s unheard of. Yeah I like thin crust. Yeah I like nyc pizza, but this is different, a true “pizza pie”❤
Have to say, it all looks amazing. Personally, I love the Chicago Pizza & Oven Grinder Co. down on North Clark Street. The Pizza Pot Pie with the mushroom and sausage sauce is to die for.
Love this Chicago series. I am a native New Yorker , however, I do like both very different types of pizza. Chicago is the fork type we are the fold type of pizza. Most people like to choose I can honestly appreciate both types for their authenticity and unique tastes.
More Chicagoans eat Tavern style pizza. Deep dish is for special occasions. Tavern Style is more Chicago. Its the second type of pizza they tried. Thin crust, sqaure cut, hold style Chicago 🍕
Chicagoans love our deep dish, but the type we eat most commonly (on a regular basis) is definitely Chicago tavern-style cut into medium-sized squares. It's a thin crust pizza, and we love it just as much as deep dish. It's the rest of the world that focuses on only our deep dish.
I like both but really can't stand hearing people say stuff like "it's not pizza unless you have to use a fork". Man, just be quiet and talk about your cities pizza instead of trying to knock NY pizza. If I had to choose one for the rest of my life I would choose NY all day but I'm never trying to downplay how good pizza is in Chicago.
Carmen's Pizzeria in Evanston, IL, was the best in its day. Their spinach souffle stiffed pan pizza was unbelievable. Unfortunately, it closed down about a decade ago.
We have to give huge props to the UNO guy…. The way he introduces everyone in the kitchen by name shows so much respect for his company and process. So nice to see.
Yes I agree, very nice and great representation to such a legendary pizzeria.

Lous suck pequads and girdanos my to go places ..hands dwn wnt go any where else except them 2
Nope, that ain’t it. If I’m getting a deep dish it’s not going to be vegetarian 🤌
@@brucearron8798 Lou's is so overrated. I find it disgusting. Giordano's much better!
@@dukey19941 lous suck girdanos all the way
Oooooouuuu I gotta try the Lous on thin crust
Wow, Mark! What a real treat this was! I am from New England, known as the "Pizza Belt", but I also LOVE me a good Chicago-style pizza, both deep-dish & thin-crust! 😁😋
Lou's looks phenomenal.
I was waiting to see some deep dish Chicago pizza. When I visited Chicago, that deep dish pizza from Giordano’s was life changing, it was so good! 🔥🔥🔥
Oh yessssss! Me too and yes it is!!! I love it soooo much I ordered it online n I love in Saint Louis, MO! I also had my friends boyfriend to bring me a pizza when he came up from Chicago…. Paid $73 for a medium I think, but it’s sooooo good❣️it’s the cheese for me😍🙏🏾💪🏾🫶🏽💚
@@michellewinston1363 Oh so it’s good in the mail too! I’ve been meaning to order one!
Giordanos is the best.
Bro I’m hyped about pizza after watching this
His Chicago videos had taken me back so many years as a kid eating great food! I feel like jumping on the highway to go and eat today!

You did a great job of exactly nailing the best of Chicago pizza, Mark! These are our choices as well. I like how you go into the kitchens, when allowed, and show the process! This makes it even more interesting and appreciative of what goes into making a specialty. Carry on!
Your reaction to the taste of the pizza really sells it. My mouth legit started watering when you bit into the Lou malnati 🍕
been watching Mark for years...Makes you feel like you are there with him and his family
Guy says it's not pizza if you eat it with your hands...then proceeds to pick up the pizza with his hands.. 😂😂😂
Waitress says DONT TOUCH THIS ITS VERY HOT. then proceeds to "I gotta pick it up!!" lmao.
But eat it with a knife and fork like he said……
I was surprised Derek didn't take you to get pizza on the last video, but I'm glad you did it this way, hitting up the well known places. Lots of less known outside of the Chicagoland area but all so good. Supposedly tavern style didn't originate in Chicago, but it along with the so called "square cut" (the way Vito and Nick's pizza was cut) is as much a part of Chicagoland as deep dish.
I wish you would do a taco series cause here in Chicago we have a lot of good Mexican restaurants with delicious tacos on both north and south side.
Stick to pizza, southern Cali does tacos

NY pizza is an appetizer and Chicago pizza is a meal
Let’s all appreciate the hard work that goes into making these videos!
I gotta agree with this I literally live 4 blocks away from Lou’s and I absolutely love it that buttery crust is chefs kiss
Have to try...you ordered on online??

Chicago style thin crust is the king of the hill 🙌 👌 to me. ❤ it.
Love the video Mark! I was just there last summer and will need to make another trip to check out your recs. Thanks for all your hard work ❤🤤
Thank you very much, hope you can visit Chicago again soon!
Chicago has such amazing pizza that you need a part 2 and 3 to try more Chicago restaurants

That all meat pie in the thumbnail looks freaking awesome.
Great review!! As a born and raised Chicagoan both styles of za’ have a place in my heart…literally 😂
I grew up eating Vito and nicks. My grandpa called it Nick and Vito’s for some reason. Place looks exactly the same as I remember it 30 years ago minus the cigarette machine that was by the door.
Amazing pizza
I like villa Rosa's better on archer ave!!
37:39 that cheese pull is one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in a long time
As an Illinoisan most will agree when I say that deep dish is for tourists whereas square cuts are for locals.
Lou Malnati's alone has ~75 total locations. A small handful of them downtown have tourists as patrons. We, the locals, have been keeping them in business all these years.
fair enough @@theguyinthesuit903

Every Illinoisan enjoys a deep dish pizza from time to time, especially in the winter 🥶
Love all your content. You are a legend! Thank you for visiting my beautiful city!!

I love a good New York slice, especially with the cupping pepperoni… but damn, the Chicago deep dish also looks delicious.
Y u kussin blood dont u have any manners or wut wuddup
Lou’s hands down always makes my mouth salivate. I literally had to hold my chin. The flavor and texture of Lou’s pizza crust is unmatched to others, along with the rest of the amazing ingredients.
THIS! I was in love with Giordano's from the 80s as a teen, but that Malnati's crust is something to behold!
Yes! Lou's hands down.
Edwardo's was good as if Pizza Hut wasn't good but great once upon a time. So many styles of Chicagoland Pie . mouth watering
So many, Many greats have come and gone.
It's that butter crust 🤤🤤🤤
I grew up on Vito and Nick's- their sausage has a super-fresh fennel taste to it, and their giardiniera gives the perfect amount of heat (without being overbearing). If you ever do a Chicago SUBURB episode, definitely check out Auerlio's (the OTHER pizza I grew up on).
👊
Mark you have a great attitude and spirit you are going to go a long way
Now I crave deep dish pizza! It is always great to see you teaming up with Derek. He is also delightful and I'm sure it's great to visit with your sister and him.
Great selection of pizza spots you chose to represent Chicago. Well done, Mark!
It was my dad's favorite. He was born and raised on the south side circa 1938. Love ya pops! Italian beef sandwiches as well.
Scala beef, on a Turano french roll, pepperocini peppers, onions and melted mozz with a side of beef juice.
Heaven.

Amazing Chicago Pizza Tour !!! Mark and awesome presentation vlog ! Mahalo for sharing !!!
Love this Chicago series. I am a native New Yorker , however, I do like both very different types of pizza. Chicago is the fork type we are the fold type of pizza. Most people like to choose I can honestly appreciate both types for their authenticity and unique tastes.
We can have the best of both worlds, variety is the spice of life as they say, why choose one when we can have both?
More Chicagoans eat Tavern style pizza. Deep dish is for special occasions. Tavern Style is more Chicago. Its the second type of pizza they tried. Thin crust, sqaure cut, hold style Chicago 🍕
@@robertkennedy8503Chicago has multiple types. Its a diverse food city
I don’t know if my last post posted. But, you are one of the most sincere food reviewer out there. Good job!!

Carmen's Pizzeria in Evanston, IL, was the best in its day. Their spinach souffle stiffed pan pizza was unbelievable. Unfortunately, it closed down about a decade ago.
