      And that’s exactly what people talk about when they criticize the reality of that lifestyle. Nobody is saying it’s wrong for a woman to choose that. But it’s always misunderstood or misrepresented as shaming them. A lot of women end up being burnt out and unappreciated eventually. Then they have to start all over again and rebuild their lives from the ground up. But no matter how many people this happens to, there’s always someone who thinks they are special.

    I grew up Mormon in Utah, and the women’s youth groups (called young women’s) would literally have us take “field trips” to try on wedding dresses as CHILDREN. And have us imagine our weddings. Then tell us we have to be “worthy” in order to find a husband. Mormons brain wash women from a young age that it’s our job and duty to get married and have children.
    And honestly it’s not just women, when men go on their missions they’re HEAVILY indoctrinated that when they come back they need to immediately find a wife and start a family. This is why in Utah people get married and settle down from 18-20. It’s a cult. It’s a cult. It’s a cult.

      I grew up in Idaho.... went to a Baptist church and Mormon events for girls. They teach just about the same stuff. Purity and that woman's sole purpose is to get married and have children that's it. Girls are given "hope chests" which is a trunk that over time your family and you would fill with things to take with you when you get married. Like its programed in you at a young age that your only hopes should be finding a husband and having lots of kids. Boys are not given a hope chest, but girls are. I remember going to Mormon youth groups and summer camps where we learned how to put on makeup modestly at 10, sew and cook. Countless events about staying pure for our future husband. Were there any events about male purity and staying pure for their futures wives. Noope. It is a cult. It is brainwashing and grooming. It is creepy and harmful and something that stays with you forever.

Funny enough, I had this exact same conversation with an American conservative, because I told her she "mentally masturbates to struggle and hardship-- a decent sign she's not REALLY struggling at all". The obsession with having an 'organic' family has to be rooted in a lack of identity, especially one that causes you to consitently aestheticize and brand a lifestyle that DOES NOT translate the same based on country or soci-economic status.

They have a completely romanticized view of the relationship between the sexes back then, when gender roles were less fluid, and want to recreate that. There is a certain stability when all the rules are clear and the roles in a partnership don't have to be negotiated. However, they forget that this requires the partners to bend where they don't fit the role. Like the wife in this case.

In mormonism there is one way of life and it’s presented as if other options for how to live your life are inherently evil and made to dissuade you from the life god made for you. To her giving up her dreams and getting married and having kids was the only option that was ‘godly’. There is very little choice in mormonism, and i think not many people know that.

All readers always consider themselves to be completely unbiased. So a journalist who writes something that doesn't fit into their world view must be up to something. As a little girl (as early as 3 years old) I always dreamed of being the perfect stay at home mom to six kids and wife to some nice man… because Mormonism told me that would be my “highest calling and purpose.” It told me that I needed to have as many babies as I could. I changed my degree so so it would take less time for me to be able to get married. In Mormonism, if you’re not married by 22, what are you even doing in life? I wanted to homeschool all of my kids partially so I had control over what they were learning and partially because that was considered “the most righteous approach.” I wanted to cook everything from scratch and basically be super trad-wife-y because that’s what I’d been TAUGHT!
    Thankfully, I’m 19. I got out soon enough that I still have a chance to live my life for me. Now I’m thinking about getting that masters I wanted. I’m considering becoming a therapist and having my own career. I want a cozy safe place with someone that I love who loves me, a cat, a dog, a couple of house plants, and a lot of books. We’ll see if we have kids, and if we do we’ll only have 1-2. I don’t want an especially large house (just enough space to meet our needs + maybe an office) but I would consider a small backyard. I want to cook more from scratch because it’s good for me. Not because it’s “what I’m supposed to do.” And I don’t want to cook literally everything from scratch anymore. I don’t want to homeschool my kids. This is likely the life I would have chosen if I’d never been Mormon at all. Compare the two. 🥲 Additionally, I don’t desire to be all dressed up around the house all the time and when I do dress up to stay home it’s to make me feel good about myself. I wear things I actually like instead of what’s “modest” now. Mormonism really messes up every bit of your life.
    Edit: I’ve seen this happen to so many women in my life. I’ll preface this with I love my dad. My dad’s not the problem. Their religion is. My mom has two degrees and she was a fantastic seamstress and artist when I was little. She doesn’t sew or draw anymore. She runs but that’s about her only hobby. She gave up everything for her kids and she probably wouldn’t have had five if it hadn’t been for religious reasons. I could see her having maybe 3. We used to hang out with her friends and their kids all the time. She maybe has like three now. *Women in Mormonism give up their personalities, hobbies, gifts, friends, and careers for their children!*

    As a practicing Mormon that escaped an abusive marriage, this is an unfortunate cultural thing that can develop, especially in "rich" families. The church DOES NOT condone the abuse of its women. And this woman is being abused. And you can also be abused and still want and love your children.

      The church is perfectly clear on its position that the man is the head of the family and a woman's primary purpose in life is to raise children. They can say they don't condone abuse all they want, but they do create the perfect environment for abuse to flourish. This may be difficult to see from the inside, but that's what it looks like from the outside.

      Totally. It kinda reminds me of those MLM schemes, where the higher ups convince (often sad/lonely) people to join up, at which point they make like 3 dollars a year or lose thousands, no in-between. Obviously the newbies with no money are victims, but the people who convinced them to join are too, in a sense. They are essentially forced to put people under them to survive because of how much time they spend on the scam, they can’t even afford another income source. But at a certain point, they become predators too. Really it’s sad for everyone, and they all suffer under the manipulative, super-rich, company owners who are taking advantage of them. Coincidentally a lot of MLMers are also Mormon.

    Hi, Im a member of the Mormon church, and I don't usually come on to do things like this. I wanted to say that this is not what our church stands for. Ive read some of these comments and they've been saying some things that are not true. In our church there is a high focus on community, and we believe our families to be our best and most important source of community and family is very sacred. Yes, from a young age we have been taught how to love, support, and care for those whom we love in our families and we believe that parenthood is a great gift. WE DO NOT CONDONE ABUSE. We believe that all marriages should be an equal partnership and full of respect each other and their wishes. WE DO NOT BELIEVE that birth control is bad. WE DO NOT BELIEVE that all families should have children if they do not want to. WE DO NOT BELIVE that women should leave their careers or passions to become a mother if they do not want to. This is a case of a strange situation that does NOT reflect our religion and its values. Please remember that people have their own beliefs and even if it is not something you feel to be true, others do.

      I don’t think anyone believes LDS causes A-> B. People are pointing out it causes A -> B -> C.
      The Family Proclamation written only by men stating men are the head of the household and every Mormon’s goal is to have a children, Personal Progress training only the girls take training them to be wives since they are kids, only men holding the priesthood, only men making up all the upper hierarchy of the LDS church, the Women’s Relief Society needing men’s approval to make any decisions, the general conferences telling BYU students and young adults to marry while they are studying before their brain is fully developed and to marry quickly, girls encouraged to marry young before their brain is finished developing while boys stay in longer mission trips, etc. How does this indoctrination not lead to abuse?
      Just because the LDS church “doesn’t condone abuse” doesn’t mean it doesn’t teach and create circumstances that enable it and provide power and authority to the abuser.

    As someone who was raised in a mormon household (left the church many years ago) of 6 children, including me. Her parents wouldn't try to save her cuz thats what mormons want for their daughters. To be married and baby makers. It's so obvious this guy doesn't love her let alone see her as a person. Also I just know this guy doesn't accept no as an answer as he's proven himself in the past by stalking her. I remember my mom telling me stories of a friend of hers (mormon bride) who locked herself in the bathroom on her wedding night cuz she didn't want to be touched. My mom found the story funny, not scary 🙃

    This is icing on the cake. I cant imagine how many women may be in similar situations just not on social media. I have respect for religion so long as it doesn't harm people, so this is not a dig at mormonism as a WHOLE, but my heart truly aches for women who ARE trapped in relationships like this, who are seen as no more than birth givers and expected to wait hand and foot on children as though she is not a person herself. No dig at stay at home parents, this is not that, again. My heart hurts for people who are in situations JUST LIKE THIS where women may truly feel their only value is to give birth (again no shade to people who want to be mothers/parents, not who I'm talking about), and that they are only seen as people (barely) if they do x y and z. Religion can be so helpful and empowering in helping you live your life how YOU feel you should according to your religion. But this woman gave up EVERYTHING just to be treated as a birth machine and essentially work around the clock. I don't think people also realize how TRAUMATIC childbirth and pregnancy is for many people. It's not an easy feat to have ONE kid let alone EIGHT. This is scary. I hope she can get out of this and find new value in her life. I hope the kids turn out okay and get the therapy they need (and the mom).

    It's good that these conversations happen about the dangers of making yourself completely dependent on another person. That way people can at least be warned before making certain decision. Ultimately though I believe that if there are no threats of financial/societal ruin, violence or death, then simple pressure is not a sufficient reason to categorize someone as a full victim of another person. Hannah was not some helpless creature with no opportunities in life, being forced into this situation. She could've still not gone on a date with him, not married him, not given up dance, not have had so many children. She did however and while she might have been pressured to do those things, she was not forced. She either completely chose to do those things, or chose to go along with them. Yes, religious indoctrination can convince people to go against their best interests, but those people are still choosing to go along with that doctrine. My point is I see no reason to feel sorry for Hannah, because she chose this life. She might actually be quite happy with it, but maybe she regrets only specific choices in it. That's allowed without having to infantilize her to the extent that she's being framed as a full victim.
