I played the role of Joseph in a Catholic high school Christmas pageant. I never realized the importance of that moment until I became an old man. I pray to him every time I remember him with Mary and how he must have taken care of Jesus and Mary during my rosary. Thank you for the narrative.
How special that you got to portray Joseph. But remember this: Nowhere in the Bible does it say that Joseph was old. Artists took liberties to show him as an old man and uninterested in Mary’s baby. Look at some Christmas art. So sad. (PS-Why did they include the story of Joseph, son of Jacob? That’s the wrong Joseph!)
Interesting! When I was in primary in a Roman Catholic School, I was nominated in a play to be Josepeth But it was changed to another person. I was relegated to an angel or onlooker? But it was the most despised people, "shepherds," who first heard from the 'Angles', the incarnation of 'Christ The Lord'. I began to think that Saint Joseph had the most faith of any human. What man would believe his betrothed was pregnant by the Holy Spirit? His faith in God and Mary is profound. He did have the faith and he knew that Mary was pregnant by the Holy Spirit. I never gave Joseph much thought before other than Mary and Joseph at Christmas. That a 60+ y.o. man who lost his wife years ago, married a 13-14y.o. orphan girl that was casted out of a temple bc she got 'unclean' (got her first menustration)...? I mean it was a very noble thing to do, otherwise Maryam/Mary would have ended on the streets becoming a baggar, thief or a prostitute if she wanted to survive only bc her relatives (aunt for that matter) didn't take her into her/their home And the other part of her family, Johns mother (& her parents) & her husband obviously didn't take her either Joseph never had intercourse with Mary & saw her more than a daughter bc she was in the age of his children, 'the (half-) brothers' (& sisters?) of Yashua/Jesus... I believe Joseph was a younger man, a few years older than Mary. An older man would have a hard time walking from Bethlehem to Egypt. He would have worked hard in order to provide for Mary and Jesus during his life.
