Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Sir, you are a great painter. You remind me of a great English painter, Terence Cuneo, he specialised in steam trains. Like you he made complicated subjects look like fun. At one time he’d painted the Queen more times than anyone, mainly for the dining rooms for a host of regiments of the armed forces. Don Gilburn, retired graphic designer. Now an enthusiast painter

Love that painting and love the comment 'sneak up on it' so so true and that took me ages to grasp as I always went straight to 'it has to look finished from brush stroke one' :) Thanks for sharing

Really loved watching you paint and how you skip from one area to another. Thanks too for showing a close-up at the end showing us the details of the boats behind.

I've been watching your videos for a while, and now going back to catch up. I found your pear and value painting interesting, .. I'm a watercolor artist for the last 30 or so years.. However, as a young girl I started in oils, and now I'm looking to get back into it. Not that I could ever give up my watercolor. Your videos are helping me relearn oils.
Thanks so much .. Barbra Joan, Tallahassee, Fl

First off, thank you for all of your valuable and generous insights. Love your channel. I was curious if you could explain your studio lighting set-up? Usually I paint by window light (a large window) but would love to have the option of painting in the evening. Do you have any recommendations on studio lighting? Beyond daylight colour temperature, overhead positioning , diffused light to combat glare, what do you like to use? Thank you in advance :)

Beautiful painting as always. Just one thing though, the walkway on the left doesn’t look quite right, it looks a little vertical.

this time i could draw better. darkening is easy, finding the right value for sky and the sea was more practice by matching with the reference, painting the boat and the reflection on the water was challenge to mix the color that matches with the reference, painting the sky which is lighter than the water, the clouds, painting the house with its value

Hi Chris, love this painting. Could you confirm you used just the primary colours and white for it, or were there maybe other ingredients (eg the Burnt Sienna for initial block-in) ?

I really enjoy watching you paint and seeing your progression. Love this painting! I find it difficult to have good control of my strokes when I hold the brush back so far. Any tips, or is it just a matter of practice?

I like to take seven or eight short deep breaths, followed by a loud, sustained exhalation through my teeth - and I also compress my abdominals very tightly. The Weaver stance is best. Hope this helps.

I try to use as much natural window light as possible but I also have on of those over head lamps on a bendable arm right over my easel and a ring light that I bounce off the walls to be softer. The key is to try and have as much even natural soft light as possible. It might take some adjusting to get it right without glare and such but do what you can. Everyones studio set up is different
