  • Today we will be driving westbound on Roosevelt Road through Westside to Forest Park.Roosevelt Road (originally named 12th Street) is a major east-west street in the city of Chicago, Illinois, and its western suburbs. It is 1200 South in the city's street numbering system, but only 1 mile south of Madison Street. It runs under this name from Columbus Drive to the western city limits, then continues through the western suburbs including Lombard, Wheaton and, West Chicago until it reaches Geneva, where it is known as State Street. 12th Street was renamed to Roosevelt Road on May 25, 1919, in recognition of President Theodore Roosevelt, who had died the previous January. In 1928 the new U.S. Route 330 (US 330), a different alignment of US 30, went down Roosevelt Road to Geneva, in 1942 it was re designated as US 30 Alternate. In 1972, after the route had been discontinued, Roosevelt Road outside Chicago became Illinois Route 38. It passes the University of Illinois at Chicago's two campuses and St. Ignatius College Preparatory School between Halsted Street and Damen Avenue. It also passes Douglas Park at California Avenue. Once past Mannheim Road it becomes Illinois.
The distance travelled today is 11.4 miles and time taken was about 38 mins. Enjoy and stay safe.

@8:23 That’s where I went to high school. I took the route via Roosevelt from LSD to get to school practically every day for four years. I don’t miss a damn thing about that place though. My four years at SICP were a torturous hell.

I sorta enjoyed the ride, but only because I grew up in K-Town. Anyone unfamiliar with Chicago’s Westside wouldn’t get much out of this. Should have called out more street names. At the end, we turn left to go South on 1st Ave, so we’d been thru Oak Park and a couple miles of Maywood (Miller Meadows is in Maywood, just West of Oak Park.)

I was born and raised at Roosevelt and Pulaski. in the 50's and 60's, going west of Kostner was taking your life in your hands if you were black. It was ok to cross Pulaski to go to the movies at the Rena Theatre, but to just stroll and sightsee much farther west of that was not safe. There was a Rexall Drugstore on the SE corner (yum; soda counter) and small businesses (including the woods Barbershop where Marie cut my hair) between there and Independence Blvd., where we all were shocked at the murder of Alderman Ben Lewis at the hands of........well,........unknown assailants..... ah, memories.

I grew up on the west side too Roosevelt and Avers. There was a Paint Factory on the corner , BIG BEAR GROCERIES across the street. Hollands was on the corner across from the Drug store. I remember THE RENA THEATER shut down 2yrs after I was old enough to go there alone .I saw Babes in Toy Land , Hercules Unchanged, Flint and Gold Finger. just to name a few. My granny went to church there Mercy Seat.
Marie and Wilma use to cut my hair at Woods Barbershop. Curtis never did . He may be on Pulaski now. My most shocking memories was the Snow Storm that shut down Roosevelt and the Riots in 68. I use to sneak the adult magazines from the newspaper stand outside the drug store. THE GOOD OLD DAYS! OH! How can I not mention the polishes from L&M next to the barbershop. (yumi) Did two years at Henson school then to Lourdes.

@@dhsfema9830 Yes!!! Carl Gorr Color Card company!!! They made those paint strips you get at the hardware with the different shades of paint. Hollands!!!! Yup, I remember that orange and white decor and those good burgers!! I used to go to the Rena too when I got old enough to cross Pulaski by myself. Marie Gassaway did my hair too!!!!! Woods Barbershop!! I had a crush on Marie. I also went to Henson when it first opened; I went to Bryant before that, over across Pulaski on 14th St. My cousins used to hang out at Bop City, a few doors east of the Rexall Drug. Those WERE the days!! Not all misery and violence.
