@@austinsrna5545 If you are going to sight see, go downtown to Center City near the Broad Street or South Street markets and delis. Plenty of vendors in and around the area selling authentic hoagies, cheesesteaks, rock salt pretzels, and cheese fries (you don't want to go to where I lived in Northeast). Also, it isn't a real Philly steak and cheese sandwich if they aren't using Amoroso bread from Jersey. Have it with a nice Rolling Rock beer, wear some Eagles green, and you will ALMOST be a native.

The first officer, flight attendants and I go up to the hotel front desk and ask "Where's the best Philly Cheese Steaks?" The staff behind the desk (3 of them) get in to this argument that almost came to blows over the best cheese steak. We picked the closest one as we were on foot. Great local bar and the cheese steak were great but, after a couple of beers it was all relative .

I’m in Portland, Oregon. We have the same kind of thing here, it’s called Voodoo doughnuts. Completely mediocre at best but in the summer there’s a 2 hour line to get a crappy doughnut. Almost any other doughnut shop in town has better product than Voodoo. If I ever go to Philly, I’ll try Jim’s or Dellesandros and avoid the Pat’s/Geno’s trap.

That is NOT 7/11 nacho cheese, that is the one, the only, the original Cheese Whiz. It comes in a giant can and is nectar of the gods, especially on fries.
Also, you do have other options for your cheese steak. In fact, the people I know rarely get whiz on their steak. Provolone is the most popular, but I'm a fan of American because of the way it melts into the meat.
Back in my younger days, of course, I would often go with a "Heart Attack"- all three cheeses together. And, yes, these are the ONLY three acceptable cheeses: provy, whiz and American.

    • @ChiroVette

I totally agree! I was in Philly for my niece's wedding, and of course I wanted to try a Philly cheesesteak. So I went to this place because of the rep. Now I want to be clear. It was NOT a bad sandwich. In fact, it was a good sandwich. I am from NY City, so I am used to great heroes. But I remember thinking while eating this hero, "Okay. It's about as good as a cheesesteak hero I can get off a decent food truck or sidewalk vendor here in NY. No better, no worse." Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, since some of the street vendors have awesome food in NY. But I was nonetheless disappointed. I expected a lot more. So I asked a few residents and they gave me the scoop, and sent me to an out of the way place, all the way in South Philly called The Real Tony Luke's (Maybe it was The Original Tony Luke's?). Anyway, this place absolutely blew me away! I was about to order a Cheesesteak, but when I saw roast pork with broccoli-Rabe and fresh provolone, I had to go with that. One of the best sandwiches I ever had in my life. Pat's and Gino's are just mediocre sandwich shoppes making bank on their name, nothing more. Next time I go there I have to try the actual Cheesesteak, because I saw the cooks make them, and they looked like they were practically cramming the meat and cheese into the hero bread with a plunger and a crowbar.

I’m from south Philly. I can tell you, after living in the suburbs and elsewhere, Gino’s and Pat’s are the Worst Philly cheesesteaks ever. Stay away from this tourist trap.

That’s just what I thought. Gino and Pat are for tourists but not for locals who know of way better places to eat a steak sandwich.

Definitely not the worst. They're just the most hated because tourists think they're the best for no good reason. But the actual steaks are just mediocre. There's far worse out there.

If you’re standing in line at either Pats or Genos you should call in an order at Angelos walk up 9th st and treat yourself to a far superior cheesesteak. Johns roast pork makes a great one along with Donkeys across the river.

Thank you Philadelphians for protecting your city and future tourists in the comments. I'm from Chicago and I really have a hard time warning people when it comes to the touristy food traps. Peace and love to all!

If you really wanna sound "hip" to your friends. You can call it a cheese steak.. no need for the Philly part.. dont know why people say Philly cheese steak.. do youse say "Chicago deep dish"? Just curious, I'm pretty sure I know the answer

@@CarsCatAliens a Philly cheese steak is different than a regular cheese steak. Regular cheese steaks come with a red sauce. You can also get California cheese steaks that come with lettuce tomato and mayo on the roll.

That "how to order" sign is very reminiscent of the "Soup Nazi" episode of Seinfeld. I can imagine the cooks saying "NO STEAK FOR YOU!!"

Which cheese is the best is purely personal preference. Why not just try them all and make your own mind up. Unfortunately im from England and probably wont get to taste these cheesesteaks but my mouth is watering watching this.
