About 10 years ago, My wife was Pharmacist in charge and she had the final say so when it came to all hiring, a woman came in with holes in her jeans and a red pocket t-shirt, way underdressed for the job. My wife gave her the job anyway because she met qualifications and liked her personality. We moved on from that place but recently my wife received a letter from that woman telling her thank you for giving her the chance she is now the head technician. At the time of the interview she had been homeless living in her car and those were her nicest clothes.

That guy who won't hire people unless they ask a lot of questions sucks. I hate people who hold you to unspoken standards like that. What if you don't

To any company who sends the "thanks, but no thanks" letters, I actually appreciate it. Finding employment can be challenging. Waiting in limbo wastes time and the rejection letter may help with self reflection for improvement/growth.

The ones that dressed bad because they couldn’t afford clothes I really feel for. Here they are trying to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and they have to worry about being discounted before they’re given a fair shot. I would suggest looking for organizations that offer clothes for job interviews in your area if you’re ever in that predicament

When you go into a job interview, you’re interviewing the company as well. If you get a bad vibe during the interview trust your instincts. Even if the employer offers you the job you’re not obligated to take it.

In America it’s illegal for an employer to ask for a photo in a resume for anyone who needs to know

He came in to the interview, said he wanted to start out the interview with a joke, proceeds to tell a very racist joke, got asked to leave.

Realized that I've been listening to this for a suspiciously long time. Realized it's been 1 h and 20 min lol

To any hiring manager who rejects potential employees with "Sorry, but due to your 'bouncy' job history, you're not a good fit...", consider these: 1: expand asking for more than the last 3 jobs; 2: realize people leave jobs for reasons they don't wish to divulge and 3: People do move cross country for personal reasons and cannot stay at 'mom-and-pop' jobs if they don't exist in their new home. Was super confused because no one else cared about it...I do have a job, just not the place I wanted...

When i was seventeen I went to a high end restaurant to get an application on my way home from school. It was a completely split second choice and didnt even factor in what i was wearing (leggings that "looked" like jeans, pink flip flops, and a full face of makeup.). Another woman was there dressed appropriately and was applying as well. Im pretty sure I got the job over her because she was being picky and only wanted to be a bar tender and I put "any position available" on my application. Once she left the GM asked me if I would be able to come back in an hour for a sit down interview with an appropriate outfit . the called me at 9pm that night and told me to start the next day lol

When I was interviewing for my current job, I admitted when I didn't know what the hiring manager was talking about. She said that was alright and I could be trained, and she asked me what kinds of things I did at my old job. After I told her how I basically single-handedly ran the McDonald's drive-thru from six until eight every morning, she hired me on the spot.

On the flip side I was the bad interviewee. Well, I wasn't bad. I was going through it at the time and basically homeless. I had gotten a job interview and he was asking me the basic questions. He asked me about what struggles I've overcome and I basically broke down crying to this poor man who had no idea what to do. I didnt get the job because I didnt actually have all the requirements but he was really nice about it

Watching those videos before an important interview is actually really helpful and relaxing. Helpful because for the more subtle stories, it helps you prepare and possibly avoid making a mistake, and relaxing because for the more crazy stories, it makes you smile and think "at least, I'm not going to do *that*".

Back in the day, I worked at a place (small business, very blue collar) that would advertise job openings in the local newspapers - applicants were asked to drop their resumes off at the front desk. They could have done it online, but this was a deliberate choice. There was one woman at the front desk who would usually receive the resumes that were dropped off, and she was a damned fine judge of character. There would be a surge of people dropping of resumes and some of them self-selected out of the running right away (a resume handwritten in pencil, stuff like that). But since the business was all about direct customer service it was important to weed some of the applicants out right away, and the boss trusted her instincts. Come to drop off a resume and be drunk, high, dressed in clothes that have been slept in for weeks, reek of BO, get all testy about why the interview can't happen right now, or just have that blank look of stupidity that says "I don't give a crap"? She would take the resume (without reading it) and say, "Okay, you're number 110, and I''l make sure the boss gets this." She would write the number 110 in the top corner of the resume in front of the applicant then, after they had left would make a quick diagonal stroke through the two ones so that it now read "NO", and would put it in the pile. Primitive system but it worked. Also a reminder that when going to a job interview one should treat everyone on site - parking attendants, security guards, receptionists and just random people walking around working there - with the same respect one would give to the interviewer. Many employers will check with the people they trust for their opinion, and some of those "lowly" people can make or break you

That namedrop thing...one of my big fears is that I'll mention that I know a specific person and they aren't a good reference so the interviewer now thinks I'm a poor employee.

I know if an Interviewer told me to come in "and dress casually" I'd be pretty wary about that too. Honestly the story with the late interviewer seems like a bullet well dodged.

I sat down and first question from the perspective boss was, “How old ARE you?” With an edge to his voice (I was 43 at the time and in great shape.
