4:25 im pritty sure thats not right,, if you choose the top you get that symbol , likewise for the bottom. but to solve the card you use both symbol runes and throw as meny runes as you have of each symbol
I picked this one up a couple months ago because I'm a fan of the books. I love the art and I think the game is fine. For me, it is more of a part of my Brandon Sanderson collection than my board game collection if that makes sense.
Thanks for the great review, Tom! And thanks for introducing me to Brandon Sanderson's work when you reviewed The Reckoners, he has quickly become my favorite author, so I was really excited to see this as well!
@@elayeth You don't have to worry. Firstly, no YA Fantasy book is over a 1,000 pages long. Kinda defeats the purpose. Secondly, from someone who has read several epic fantasy series, Stormlight Archive is clearly one of the best!
@@elayeth its far from a young adult series, its incredibly deep with a really cool magic system and part of a combined universe called the cosmere, it's not overly graphic or dirty though so you could probably read it with kids if you wanted
Excited to hear that you appreciate Brandon Sanderson as much as I do. Love Call to Adventure and have been thinking about getting this game for a while. Great review as always!
I like all versions of this game, but I have to say I was disappointed by the component quality on this one. In the first game, the XP markers were 3D plastic and in this they're cardboard chits. The player boards were also thicker and more sturdy in the original. Maybe they had to cut costs to keep the overall price down because of licensing or whatever, but I can't help but feeling like Brotherwise cheaped out on the production value this time around. Overall, I love the games, but this was my biggest gripe about this particular release.
I agree, The Stormlight Archive is the best series of all time! Would find it hard to play the game with someone who hasn't read the series though. Or should I rather say because I love the books. There are definitely spoilers for the story, which I would find hard to share or discuss during gameplay with people who haven't read the books yet so as not to spoil there enjoyment if they decide to go read the books (which of course they should :D). So before I consider buying this game I want to be sure I can play it with others who know the story. Damn... cos it does look fun!
If you have a Radiant destiny card like Edgedancer, you reveal it at the beginning of act III instead of the end. So you can use that power in the last act and the fight against Odium.
Not having read Stormlight Archive (yet), the books are on the way, I would love to see this Call to Adventure cover the best fantasy series ever: The Malazan Book of the Fallen. Nothing has ever come close to it IMHO. Thanks for the review, and it also piqued my interest in the books.
I need to reread the first 3-4 of that series since i stopped in the middle. And imo there is no "diving" back into the middle. Its a fairly dense and opaque series from my memory.
@@bp968 Yeah, there ate a lot if moving part's. You may be able to pick it up as the first few books are spent introducing new characters and plot lines. That said, I have read the whole series twice, and probably enjoyed it even more second time round as I knew what was going on, and where it was leading.
I have the regular call to adventure game and I like it a lot. I will probably get the stormlight archive version just because I’m a big fan of the series. I think it’s much better than game of thrones. Saying that, if I was to introduce this game to someone not familiar with the series I’d stick with the original game.
I have the base game, don't see any difference between the two. For me the game is flat, I was very disappointed after the first play, expected deeper experience. After finishing had to watch YT video to check if I played it correctly, unfortunately, yes. Maybe too light for me.
happy to to have sold the original game and expansion since they botched the "expandability" of the system and you can't just mix all cards in but you need to swap sets to balance the mechanics - this one is a stand-alone set which doesn't really makes sense for a game that should be dedicated to expanding its pool of story elements. Plus the rules are full of holes, and as it is a quite simply set collection game I'll just play a better one. I guess they decided to just cash in with fans of great fantasy book series rather than develop a solid game out of a good idea
Call adventure as a story or narrative driven games is just the developer trying to make the game more appealing as it is. It's simply and abstract game much like terra mystica
I'm on book 10 of WoT and for me unless Brandon somehow screws up (highly doubtful) I think SA absolutely crushes WoT. I really really like WoT so far but I agree with Tom that SA is easily the best fantasy series and probably just the best series ever
I agree with Carter. I've read through the Wheel of Time twice and enjoy it quite a bit, (extremely excited for the show) but I prefer almost everything about the Stormlight Archive. The exceptions, maybe, are two specific scenes in the Wheel of Time which blew my mind and barely edge out even the most exciting scenes in the Stormlight Archive so far. ***SPOILERS FOR WHEEL OF TIME BELOW, STOP READING, YOU'VE BEEN WARNED*** Dumai's Wells and Rand and Nynaeve cleansing Saidin are the two I'm thinking of.
@Joseph Pinkley For me is the opposite: WoT has given characters time (no pun intended) to grow organically, while on SA they tend to develop with leaps that are in my opinion less believable and makes the whole less enjoyable; do not get me wrong, I think SA is amazing, but personally it feels to me more like a captivating action movie, while WoT feels like a slower masterful drama, and I tend to prefer that kind of storytelling.
@@TheMastermindX11 the big problem for me so far is that it is in fact TOO slow. I think Brandon just tells a better story in general and even though I actually agree with you on the character part there are no sanderson characters (except maybe shallan I'm still undecided) that annoy me. Most of Jordan's female characters are annoying for large chunks of the story so far and it's disappointing and hard to get through but also he just spends entire books spending time on a whole lot of nothing. Yes he gets to develop more which helps his characters but he also needed to trim A LOT. His pacing is really bad and so you combine that with just sandersons better storytelling and for me it's not even close. I totally get what you mean though

Came here to say the same!
Thank god. Thought I’d been playing wrong this whole time
Definitely one of the best book series ever. I am campaigning to get Orange Nebula to make a Stormlight Archive game!

I would really love to see a Wheel of Time version of Call to Adventure!
Actually might happen once the TV show airs! Until then, it's just "too old" of a property, I think. (Not actually old, but cult of the new, etc.)
Thanks for the great review, Tom! And thanks for introducing me to Brandon Sanderson's work when you reviewed The Reckoners, he has quickly become my favorite author, so I was really excited to see this as well!
I have „The Way of Kings”on my shelf. I'm quite hesitant to try it. Hope this is not a young adults fantasy...

'This is my favorite IP of all time's 🤔
I don't understand that Edgedancer card. If it's face down, how would you be able to use the "once per turn" ability?

@@mikemudrow thank you for the explanation. I guess this is a new mechanic of this version of the game?

Strength Before Weakness!
This is my favorite solo game to date!
Hope they can make a Harry Potter variant
please read another book.

How did this not get an excellent rating? Sort of surprised by the approved rating at the end. haha

WoT was my favorite until SA. A few of the WoT books were a slog to get through and sorta dragged the series down a notch for me.
