“It’s a horrible combination. It’s gonna be fun” Your spirit of adventure fosters creative genius. Adding that lovely oak lid pulled the whole crazy quilt of colors into balance. What a fun experiment. So whimsical. I keep thinking what an awesome button box that would be.
Such a pretty result from a mishmash of things. Fantastic design as always and I agree that holm oak is beautiful. I never know what you will come up with next! It makes for addictive viewing....
A timeless piece...across a century. You could place that in any era...20's , 30's , 40's .......etc etc and, it wouldn't look out of place. Excellent work of craftsmanship, beautiful too.Nice one Mike.👍👍
I never had the pleasure of working with the holm oak. It’s a beautiful compliment to balance out the “business” of the bottom. Great job Mike, as always!
My dad made lamps & billy clubs from offcuts he got from an in-law. He was trying his hand at making some candle sticks but got sick before he could finish them their still in my garage 😢. I always enjoyed watching him work, so I really enjoy watching your videos 😊.
Mike, I think your videos are really great. Unlike some other woodturner’s who seem to miraculously turn out museum pieces every time without a word of explanation, your practical and down to earth commentaries are very useful to aspiring woodturner’s like me. The pieces you produce are excellent and I intend to use your videos as a guide to some future projects I want to do. Thank you for what you do and please just keep doing it. In my opinion you deserve 10 times the number of subscribers that you have and hopefully you’ll get there very soon. Well done.
Thanks so much David, your words mean so much and I'm so glad I can help inspire people to have a go. I'm not a great woodturner, but I'm always happy to give something a go and share the journey no matter the outcome. All the best, Mike
I reckon the cost of shipping it to the UK would be prohibitive. Not sure if any of the big box stores over here stock that kind of thing, and I don't think Mike does enough resin work to make it viable. Good thought though!
What I think is brilliant are the endless possibilities for ideas using resin, even the waste from the magnificent pot you made could be turned into another item ❤️ it
this turned out just lovely! i thought it was a great idea to use someone else's off cuts, and it was not a silly idea at all to buy them :) glad you did!!!! congrats on 2 yrs, and many more to come!
The green was not my favorite color until it complimented the other colors. The top is absolutely beautiful wood. That grain really brings the grains of the other woods together.
In order to make sure that the Milliput is condensed as much as it can into the epoxy voids, I would recommend using a dental instrument called an amalgam condenser. It comes in a variety of shapes a sizes to properly pack amalgam filling into a tooth. You can probably get used ones from any general dentist or new ones from a dental supply catalogue.
Since I got my shed set up properly, I've made 13 chopping boards, 5 vases, 3 bowls, about 20 tea light holders and a replica Thor's hammer. All made 100% from lovely off cuts off eBay 😁 This video has given me an Idea for how I can use all the little offcuts of offcut I've built up along the way, but I'm still scared to try resin. One step at a time...
Buying those offcuts turned into a beautiful piece of art, with that lid wow! Gorgeous! Well done Mike. You listened to your soul, knowing you would make something incredible out of it.❤😊 x
The colors worked much better together than I expected. I was lunging for the screen crying, "NOOOOOOO!" But it's like all the different wood hues and resin chunks balanced everything out. Good job!
With a few hurdles to tackle you've once again smashed it out of the park. Great choice of colours and i just love it when Artists let nothing go to waste. Thanks for sharing!
Great job. I've done a small one basically using scraps. Was surprised how quickly it was snapped up at a craft fair. There is a lot of interest in these type of unique items. Well done!
Stunning! I gotta be honest, when I first saw that box of scraps, I thought it would be a bit too busy with all the different woods and resins, but the colors that you chose along with that holm oak lid really brought the whole thing together in such an amazing way!
You inspired me to make a totally different form of pet urn. People tend to want more colour in the urns. And the size fits for bigger dogs as well. I'm going to use my own offcuts. Thanks for sharing.
I was doubting the outcome of this bowl at first. Wow, it came out amazing. A very attractive piece, and that choice of wood for the lid just put it over the top! I love the shape of this piece and the finial too. Everything came together beautifully.
Thanks so much, I was looking at this for four days waiting for it to dry thinking I may have made a mistake but as soon as it popped out the mould I knew we would be ok 😀
Well done and inventive. I know nothing about pouring resin but a possible suggestion. When doing the pour fill to about 1/3 and drop the pot down on the bench a couple of times and continue pouring and maybe do another drop. It works well in doing baking certain things and fills in voids. I have no idea if that would work.
This just goes to show it’s not what you’ve got or not got, no matter where the bits come from you have to have an eye to do something beautiful with them! And beautiful is the outcome ❤ this pot.
When you picked the mica colors for the resin, I was concerned the piece would end up looking like a weird yule piece. So glad the green ended up looking more blue in the final form, setting off/being set off by the blues in the offcut pieces. I like the darkness of the red mica against the the different woods and the finial was nice and simple to complement the small pieces of wood in the bowl. Congrats on turning a "really bad idea" into a very pretty bowl.
I liked the box as well. I have resin and all accessories; hoping to try making a bowl soon. Using some white oak burl which is riddled with holes from a yellow jacket swarm living inside. Fortunately, I cut the large dead tree down in winter and the wasps were too cold to come after me.
If you use the rice method very often, you should make yourself a funnel from hardware cloth that fits onto the rim of a 5 gallon bucket. Then you can dump whatever you are measuring with into that bucket in the hardware cloth will catch the pieces in the rice will continue down to the bucket.
Such a beautiful pot, way to prove everyone (including yourself) wrong regarding the resin colors. The blue resin cutoffs go so well too. When cutting your tenons, they look super shallow for placing in a chuck. About how deep are your tenons that you are putting in the chuck? Beginner father/son turners here learning from you one video at a time!
Thanks Charles, this one was quite deep at about 5mm, deeper because of the resin, when it is just wood I make them 2-3 mm. Heavy pieces obviously get deeper ones 😀
This piece really appeals to me. I love it! And the holm oak makes a beautiful lid which contrasts so well with colours in the bowl. Yip definitely one of my "feel good" favourites 😊 Thanks Mike, for sharing your weekly creativity with us. And definitely worked out a good decision to buy 🙃 Have a super evening 🤗
I really like the way that you said these colours don't go with each other, then proceed to prove yourself wrong.
It's a stunning pot.
Haha I know, I was a little disappointed when it worked out so well lol 😀
Ok.. once that lid went on, I was sold! The grain of the wood and design you did with it was just beautiful!
Thanks Alison, so pleased I chose that wood for the lid 😀
absolutely agree
You said it one man's trash is another man's treasure. Good job.
Thanks! 😀
“It’s a horrible combination. It’s gonna be fun”
Your spirit of adventure fosters creative genius. Adding that lovely oak lid pulled the whole crazy quilt of colors into balance. What a fun experiment. So whimsical.
I keep thinking what an awesome button box that would be.
Haha yes I think it would be perfect for buttons 😂
Even when you are doing things you think are “crazy,” and “horrible,” you make true art.
I think I'm just lucky 😀
"these colours are horrible together" then goes ahead anyway 😂 - but it worked! What a great bowl. The holm oak is lovely 😊
Thanks so much, I was slightly disappointed the colours looked so good together 🤣😊
I agree, what’s up with that? Are you actually trying to make something look ghastly? Well you failed so there!
@@MaryHyso I wanted it to make an impact and make more of a statement lol, failed completley
Great video. Clever way of making most if scrap. The lid makes it .
What are the different finishes that you used
Such a pretty result from a mishmash of things. Fantastic design as always and I agree that holm oak is beautiful. I never know what you will come up with next! It makes for addictive viewing....
Thank you so much Rachel, I have no idea either so it's interesting this end as well lol 😀
This has to be my favourite of your pieces. Brilliant way to use those bits left over.
Thank you! Cheers Simon 😁
Just simply gorgeous. Now that I'm retired I hope to spend enough time in my shop to turn and become 1/10th as talented as you are.
Hi William, I'm not that good I'm just not afraid to fail. If you fail enough you become good because you learn each time.

Thanks Pete, appreciate it 😀
I agree with your commentary regarding the color combination and the comparison to buying another person's off cuts.
Thanks Archie 😁
Nice job making a treasure out of it. I can't wait to get equipped for resin work. @@MikeHolton

Beautiful 🤩 looks like it should be a liquorice Alsorts storage pot lol.
Great idea with the rice to gauge the amount of epoxy needed 👍🏼
Thanks so much 😊
I love your initial distaste for the two colours you selected yet the end product is beautiful.
Thank you so much Damian 😃
I'm so happy you're back! I really fancy that lidded bowl. It's very pretty. Thank you for sharing your artistry with us. ❤
You are so welcome Matilda ☺️
I really like how this item came out. All the different colors and grains. Beautiful!!

Thanks! 😀

I do need one but not easy to find in the UK for a reasonable price.

What a stunning pot made from the off cuts. I think the colors are just fine. I enjoy your explanations too.
