  • I got Death Wobble in my WJ! I saw this one coming on my first real test drive so I already had a new Moog track bar ready to go. Thankfully the track bar did the trick but we still have many more suspension parts to replace! #Jeep #GrandCherokee #Deathwobble #trackbar

I have been building and modifying jeeps for decades and have repaired lots of death wobbling jeeps for people. Tie rods, track bar, drag link, any of these can cause death wobble to show up. One reason the xj and the wj are more susceptible to death wobble is their factory caster settings. The come from the factory literally on the ragged edge of what is not enough caster, 3.5 degrees. After repairing the current cause of your A set of adjustable lower control arms is a must do upgrade. Use the adjustability to turn that caster angle up to 5 degrees, even 6-7 on a lifted rig, set the toe properly and even a worn out front end will be much less prone to death wobble.

Nice job Dano. That Death Wobble is no joke,my wife experienced it in our 2001 XJ last year and I replaced the whole front end.I figured the parts were 20 yrs old so why not replace them all....

Dan, you should tight the bolts when the jeep is with the hole weight on the street and you roll it a few meters. Then your axle will center and your bushings will be in the correct Position.

I replaced my track bar on my 2004 WJ because I was getting the death wobble. A year later I got the death wobble again. That's when I watched your video where you replaced the upper and lower control arms and axle bushings. I figured mine needed replacing since it had over 230k miles on it. Sure enough they were all completely worn out. After replacing everything I still had the wobble. My hunch was the one year old track bar was bad even though it was 1 year old. I replaced it again and 5 months later no wobble. It held out for a year but got worn out because everything else was shot. Not sure how long after you replaced your track bar you changed out the rest of the front suspension but if you still get the wobble start with that track bar again.

If you can get a helper, have them turn the steering wheel to shift the axle and line up that bolt.

Heya! You beat me to it - I actually just got done putting a new track bar and steering linkage on my MJ. I got death wobble going 75mph and had to pull over and slow down to 30 to get it to stop. Pretty scary when you're hours away from home, alone, and praying for dear life that everything holds together

Turn the steering wheel to the right to move pitman arm out of the way...New Steering stabilizer is in order as well, Get a heavy monotube job. Get adjustable lower arms, make them 3/4 to 1 1/2 longer bolt to bolt to compensate for lift, no more death wobble. Rear adjustable arms are to correct pinion angle after lift installed. Upper bushings, and ball joint on rear, Also 1" swaybar on rear help with rear end wag. Nice vid Bro. Latex gloves, help with greasy mits.

You need an adjustable track bar after you lift it, that's why your steering wheel is crooked, when you lift it and use the non adjustable track bar it pulls your front differential to the one side, you can see when you measure how far each tire sticks out on the sides

Your videos really help. working along the same line. High mileage WJ Just completed front suspension and brakes . Will be starting rear suspension and brakes when we return from RV trip from Texas. I still need to order track bars and upper rear control arm. Have some lower right quarter panel work to do and gas tank skid plate replacement.

The Niner got all new drag, track, lower control arms and ball joints. A pain but at the time it wasn’t driven much and I’m sure all those parts haven’t been replaced and they sure needed it. Then new tires and alignment cause all that stuff done unless you have lifetime alignment would get pricy each time you replace something lol

When replacing the rear upper control arm, it is easiest to remove it WITH the ball joint still attached. The three 18MM (IIRC) bolts can be easily accessed and removed using a box-end wrench. The arm almost never releases the joint unless you buy the ridiculously priced puller that is specifically for it. Also, while you were working on the axle-side of the trackbar, I did notice the dent next to the trackbar mount @
