  • After about 6 years of random wobbles here and there, I finally have EVERYTHING replaced on the front end. Looking back, this should have been the very first thing I did.

    The Trackbar and Drag link should be parallel to each other. They should be at the same angle in relation to the axle as well as the chassis. This allows the axle to articulate evenly at both the pitman arm and the chassis mount of the Trackbar. Another often overlooked consideration when lifting a Jeep. Measure the height from the ground of both the Drag link and Trackbar bolt at the axle and then at the pitman arm and chassis mount of the Trackbar. The difference between the two pairs of measurements should be the same for correct Drag link and Trackbar alignment. A misaligned combination will cause bump steer and put undue stress on the bushings leading to premature wear allowing the Death Wobble to return.

    I have replaced everything on my JK once I moved up to 37's still get DW every once in awhile. Seems to happen in the winter time it doesn't get that cold here AZ. I installed entirely new lift on it my old one was 7 years old. Seems if I inflate the tires to max tire pressure helps winter time they go down. It only happens on street driving around 45mph if I'm on the highway at 70 I don't get it. I do have a steering gear brace the one that braces the sector shaft I probably also need that one you have braces the housing. I tell people don't go over 35" on a JK unless your willing to spend lot of money do it right. Maybe the JL is better to lift on 37s to do it right really need D60 and long arms. At that point if you need that much jeep just buy some crawler someone already spent ton of dough on has a V8 in it. I won't build one of these again reality a RZR is the way to go downside is eat dust on trails here in AZ behind someone.

    NEW here, ha---I just bought a 2005 ford 1500, long story short it was a 78 bed but now owner before me made bed longer--now i know what yr saying--frame is messed up but not it, i measured from the axle to a frame mount on the front of frame-both sides and its dead nuts, Also it drives straight down the road--it dont dog walk on you--its straight so i assume all is good with frame job,, NOW my problem is this--going around 50-70 mph truck is ok -little vibration but not bad--but when i go slow--15-to 30 mph i hit bump or pot hole my seat vibrate -doors vibrate---again its as soon as front wheels hit the bump or hole--I took to place for inspection--he said struts and 1 wheel barring--but still have this very bad left to right wobble,, DID the guy over look something at inspection as all they do is check for normal stuff-ball joints-shocks and etc,PLEASE help--why this truck wobbles bad at slow speed that my seats vibrate---txs for any infor..

    Where did you mount your camera? I'd like to try this to diagnose where my DW is coming from; I replaced my front and rear track bar, all 4 front control arms and my tie rods, inspected the hubs and ball joints, had the tires balanced and the wheels aligned, and it persists. Maybe if I can see what's going on when it actually happens, I'll be able to sort it out.

    • @thebak4d
      @thebak4d  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was mounted to the drag link with the gopro handlebar mount pointed at the track bar. I would verify all your connecting points. Just because things are new doesn’t mean the old holes aren’t bored out or have loose mounts. I’m sure a camera down there will help you figure it all out. 👍🏼

      @robertware8643 sounds about right. Tie rod ends and steering box will pop. Also the track bar will for sure pop if it’s loose or the holes are wobbled out. • @thebak4d
      @thebak4d  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It could be a few things. What vehicle?
      Control arm bushings prevent the “front to back” movement. The track bar prevents side to side movement. But there are other things that effect it.
      Ball joints
      Balanced tires
      All your joints up front
      Steering stabilizer
      Basically, everything plays a part. It’s a team effort in your front end. Everything plays a part.
      If you notice in the video, I mention that EVERYTHING in the front of my Jeep had been changed out. So the trackbar officially fixed it.

    • @evi6907
      @evi6907 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a 2011 Jeep Wrangler Sport 2dr. After the lift and the alignment, I noticed how off it was and my steering just felt so soft. I got that done at a shop but wasn’t too happy about it as the passenger wheel would rub off on the lower arm when making full right turns. Then took my Jeep to DCD Customs, they told me I could get some wheel spacers which I did and that solved the rubbing. When I ask them for a quote to fix my wobbly steering, they quoted me $1375. In my opinion that’s way too much, so I’m trying to figure out ways to do it myself and saw your video.
      I appreciate the input and advice, I’ll start with the trackbar on Monday and see if that makes a difference.

    • @thebak4d
      @thebak4d  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right on, I’m sure it will help the wobble. I don’t know how you could leave a shop and have it do that. Did the lift not come with a trackbar? Most lifts will come with them since it needs to be longer once it’s lifted.

    • @alvk3996
      @alvk3996 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is normal. It's not supposed to be pressed on all the way, you will damage the axle mount it you do. There is a raised lip on the bushing and you press the bushing in up to the lip.

I tried heating it up and using an air hammer and it won't budge. Now I'm trying to find something with the same diameter as the bushing outer sleeve so I could try to use that to press it out.

    What a piss poor design from the factory, a ball joint, what the fk were they thinking? the new design is what they should have done the first time, glad you were able to fix it, I was going to suggest taking out the ball joint till I saw the new track bar.
    After watching the end of the video, the only thing that concerns me is the fact that the bracket is bolted on, with my 79 Bronco the bracket was similar to the new one you put in, except it was also the shock mount, I dropped it down 2" welded it, something I think you should have done, I don't trust brackets bolted to the frame, especially when they have the greatest amount of stress on them , anyways , good luck with the new setup, It definitely was your problem.

    Trust me on this one, 40 plus years fixing autos. The death wobble is NOT from worn parts!!! It IS due to Too much Negative caster. Have a real alignment done and move caster as much positive as possible with keeping the camber to as close to zero as possible.. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!! Also toe set at 1/16 in on both sides. No more wobble and tires will last much longer.

    Track bars do not cause death wobble.
    A bad track bar will let it deathwobble easier.
    Tha root of deathwobble is your front tracking, (toe).
    You don't want any toe in on a straight axle.
    Start neutral, if you get deathwobble, toe it out slightly, a little at a time, until it stops deathwobbleing completely.
    If you go to far it can dw still.
    The crown of the road will make a vehicle with neutral toe track inward, due to the tire contact patch being on the inside of the tire.
    If you could take your wheel, tire combo off, and somehow give it a contact patch, like it's on the truck, and pushed it, it would go in a circle.
    The road crown constantly changes, therefore you have to split the difference.
    When the tires aren't tracking together, the tread bends in the direction it's being pulled, and loads the tires for deathwobble.
    As soon as you hit a bump, certain speeds, or sometimes with sticky tires with a big footprint they'll deathwobble at 20mph like crazy.
    All can be fixed with a simple tierod adjustment.
    Brand new vehicles can dw if the front tracking is wrong.
    With good tires and proper tracking , the only thing a loose trackbar will do is give you play in your wheel and a wondering problem.

    • @KoryTams
      @KoryTams 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dude, what do you think a track bar is? It in no way connects to the wheel or causes "wander"... also, I'll personally Venmo you $20 if you can get a brand new vehicle to deathwobble just by turning tie rods... I await your video!

    • @KoryTams
      @KoryTams 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikegreer9041 oh I get it, and I can tell you right now that if trackbar bushings are shot, drag link joints are loose, control arm bushings are oblong and tie rod ends have been compromised, you are not going to fix deathwobble by dicking with the toe of your tires... you may want to worry less about your sticky rubber and more about the geometry involved in keeping your axle centered and stable during impacts. I'm going to assume you've never disassembled a solid axle front end before and reassembled it with new components to compare the results, because you sir, don't get it...
