In case it's not mentioned, This song written by singer Rik Emmett, was a reflection on the lessons taught to him by his Aunt's life as she fought and eventually succumbed to cancer. Really good, thoughtful reaction.
Triumph is so underrated in my opinion. The musicianship of each member is top shelf, the vocals are seriously amazing, the lyrics are good, and the arrangement of their songs are outside of traditional rock formula while still being super catchy. I heard these guys in 83 or 84 and was instantly a fan. I don't know how more people aren't aware of them. Rush is my favorite trio out of Canada (hell, anywhere) but these dudes run a close second. Nice reaction, and channel!
I was at that concert and 15 years later I am walking down Argyle Street with some friends on a warm summers evening and I could hear Rick doing this song in an acoustic set in The Attic. Super talented and grounded individual.
You need to look into their whole catalog what a great band so underrated I listen to Triumph my junior high and high school years love this band so much talent 🔥🎤🎸🇨🇦
Lay it on the line- same show. ❤️🎼❤️ the quality guitar and vocal coming from Rik Emmett- that’s genius level skill on both, facts. Enjoy your journey into rock, you’ve only scratched the surface……also from Canada- Rush. Have fun 🤘😎🔥 They ended the show with this….then an encore. Saw them live in Baltimore, 80’s…didn’t disappoint- and not much tech back then.
@@theonlychrisanddanshow I totally agree. Been a Triumph fan since this album came out. Magic Power is either = or >. Great review, enjoy your honesty. Cheers!
@@theonlychrisanddanshow As someone who owns every Triumph album (on vinyl and CD), they have an amazing catalogue but if one song is going to beat this for a 10, it's probably Magic Power. Although if you like vocalists trading off, Follow Your Heart might also be it - written by Rik but Gil (drummer) wanted to sing it so he does most, with Rik helping on the chorus.
if you mean providence 85 then me too and 87 and it was incredible .there are only a few bands that sound better live than studio and triumph is on the short list
Triumph was always a bit different from the hard rock and metal scene in the late 70's/early 80's. While most of those acts had darker/ medieval themes, Triumph leaned towards positive uplifting messages in their music.
Another great Canadian product from Toronto and as I said many times which would make me the trillionth person' in history to repeat it What a voice ...the great Rik Emmett'
I grew up in Toronto in the 70's and 80's and had the pleasure of seeing Triumph SEVEN times, including when they played my freaking High Scool back in 1976!! Oh and did you know that after this tour Rik Emmett quit the band and taught music at Toronto's Humber college for the next 20yrs??? No?? That's okay, not many people do!! But that's the truth and as they say! That's Rock and Roll baby!!!
Rik Emmitt left the band in 1987 and they made one more album 1993 without him. Last show they played was in 2008 but Rik Emmitt has released several solo albums.
Only Rick Still tours and plays there songs. He's an awesome guy, hasn't lost a step...I have had the opportunity to talk to at leanth on a Few occasions when he's in my area.
Great band. check out "WHEN THE LIGHTS GO DOWN (LIVE 1983) Remastered in ZOO HD", where the drummer is the lead singer, or. "Never Surrender - Live at US Festival 1983 (Remastered) 1080p". They killed it there, so any song will blow your socks off.
You actually wanted them to cut it down to 03:09 ? Ever hear Billy Joel's 'the entertainer'? "It was a beautiful song but it ran too long if you want have a hit you've got to make it fit... So they cut it down to 3:09."
THe most uplifting band in the realm of arena rock. Normally a three-piece with an occasional extra guitar player, Triumph was pure positivity in an era when rock could get gloomy at times.
Rik Emmett wrote this song for his aunt who had cancer at the time!! Rik Emmett is one of the nicest guys out there too!! None of that attitude like so many rockers!!
I bought Triumph’s 1981 album, “Fight the Good Fight” and they became my 2nd favorite band (of many) for the time. We went to the US Festival in May of 1983 which was funded by Steve Woz of Apple Computer as they had the just about to be released Mac on display. Woz was selling us on computers. I couldn’t understand what they had to do with the jams!! We saw; Quiet Riot, Motley Crew, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Triumph, The Scorpions and Van Halen - Scorps took the show!! They became my new 2nd favorite band. You guys misunderstand that this is usually their encore song so it’s longer than others. Listen to the studio version. Rik Emmet is virtuoso. Btw, Lay it in the line is my favorite Triumph song because of emotions attached to experiences in high school.
Gil Moore is the reason I have played Tama drums and Paiste Cymbals forever. Started in High School with a Pearl White set like I saw during the Never Surrender Tour. Maybe 1982 or 1983
I don't like it because it feels like getting up and going up for a drink in the middle of some artist's solo, but it's not the end of the world for me. But it is for guitar players. So just a heads up, that when your channel is bigger, you'll get a ton of grief for pausing on guitar solos. Otherwise, channel seems good. Congrats.
another great Canadian power trio to add to Rush, Tea Party, and Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush (tho at times later in his career Frank added another guitarist on rhythm)
If you like guitar players go back a ways. Terry Kaths Poem 58 from 1969's Chicago Transit Authority. He died in an accident in 1978 right before recording his first solo album. A sample of what might have been was recorded in 1977 with Chicago. It's called Takin It On Uptown. No horns. Check his baritone voice out on this song. A little Joe Cocker and Ray Charles.
This thing of yours of swigging from that thermos thingy every time you're about to grace us with one of your nuggets of wisdom is why you get a nuclear thumbs down.
Well I have a tune you will either give a 10+ or a 0. It is the Midnight Special Live Version of Focus's Mega Song "Hocus Pocus". They played a 7 minute song in 4 and 1/2 minutes as that is all the time they had left in the show. Midnight Special was a phenomenon back then. It started at 1230am Saturday Morning and went to 2am. Everything stopped. Universities and College Party's Stop Dead, and everyone put on the show, as then there was no way to see groups except at Concerts. In the 9 years of the show, this was the only Full Standing Ovation given, and well deserved. Subscribed, thanks guys.

Great band, criminally underrated, seen them in the UK in 1980.

This song was inspired by Rik's aunt who was dealing with cancer at that time.

You should listen to Lay it on the line from this concert, better than the studio version that you've already reacted to.
WAY better...
Rik Emmett is just an amazingly talented singer, guitarist, lyricist.
Magic Power is probably the ten you're looking for.
gonna be tough to beat this one nearly flawless- Dan

@@theonlychrisanddanshow Try Lay it on the Line or Magic Power from the 1983 US festival live, by Triumph. Check out the crowd size there, as well.

I became a huge Triumph Fan in 79' got to see them live 9 times live Incredible Band only Wish there was any real music like this today !
Check out the album, "THUNDER 7." It's a fantastic display of the whole band's talent. The big hit off that album was, "Follow Your Heart."
Seen Triumph at least 6 times and always wondered how the hell he hit those notes live, but he did every time

Led Zeppelin and Rush had a baby and named it Triumph!

Great band live great energy

Watch them live at the 1983 US music festival
I think the fact that there are only three guys in the band should push it to a 10.
There are four guys here, as they hired a rhythm guitarist to join them in the final years on stage.
You need to listen to the official TRIUMPH! FOLLOW YOUR HEART VIDEO...EXCELLENT

Rush Red Barchetta
this song was written for Rik's grandmother who had been battling cancer.
There’s nothing wrong with liking talent.... it’s hard to play lead guitar and handle lead vocals at the same time...... live to boot.....
