I am so glad our original Nintendos were so limited in power and the developers at Nintendo had to use the hardware they had. It made such an amazing and timeless game.
Small correction: the bongos at 5:33 and 6:51 are only supposed to be played when mario rides yoshi. In your version, the music plays the regular version, then the version with the bongos, then loops back over to the regular version. What should be happening is, the regular theme should start playing, then, when mario gets on top of yoshi, it switches to that version. A trick you could do for it is to play both versions at the same time, mute the bongo version, then unmute it when mario gets on top of yoshi and mute the normal version, then reverse it again when mario gets off of yoshi. this is awesome If you were to work on this project again, it would be interesting to add a “swing” to Mario’s runs and an arm opening to the running animation reminiscent of Mario 64. This way the animations become more fluid and satisfying but I repeat that this is awesome
I have a random idea for part 2, if you're interested! What if, when you get Yoshi from a Question Block, the camera pans to yoshi during the hatching animation while everything else pauses for a second, then continues when yoshi can be mounted?
Also, at 5:25, you can see a jarring effect when Mario jumps and the camera moves up and down with him. In the real games the camera only moves vertically once certain height thresholds are met or Mario touches a new platform. I think I remember a Nintendo dev talking about that once
I know this is very picky but these are so well made that I think this detail should be added to make it perfect. Some parts of the song have percussion even when Mario is not riding Yoshi, but maybe thats because the music was added in post. (In the original game the songs only have a bongo drum doing percussion while mario is riding yoshi)
This is beautiful! I think the excessive walls everywhere don't need to be there though as they are a bit unsightly. You could just have platforms and trust the players won't fall off or just have some fences around at the moment. Having a nice skybox that's more visible feels more like the Mario style
Your creativity is spotless and you clearly have an idea here. My nitpick would be the 3D world... I'm not sure, doesn't seem that convincing for a 2D-to-3D Mario game. This was a gem to see in my recommended, you did great! My only issue is the arms when Mario is walking, I think they should swing backwards a little, so it looks a little more realistic
One last suggestion I would be to disable the self-shading on the voxel models so that they don’t reveal all the faces of every individual voxel. Voxel Doom uses the same method to great effect; the shapes implied by the original pixel art are intact while in 3D, bridging the gap between the two styles. Alternatively, if you want to keep both the self-shading without exposing the voxel faces, there exists per-voxel normals/per-voxel lighting techniques that color each shaded voxel wholesale. However the only implementations I know of have been in custom voxel engines, so I’m unsure if they could be translated over to work in Unity.

This is quite the massive project, good luck 🍀there’s an insane amount of content in the game to cover including glitches and various niche item and enemy interactions and physics if you feel like going that deep into it with recreating every mechanic. Looks great so far :)
I see the amount of effort you've gone through, with the standard editing to help viewers enjoy the content easier, as well as the pacing and scripting and good microphone quality. The effort you made to 3D model multiple different things and program the level is also great! It takes a long time for people to be able to get to the stage to make so many assets themselves while also programming functions! I can't wait for more videos. Maybe next time you can do a challenge for making the original Zelda in 3D, since the game has a lot of open design that would work in a 3D environment? If you do that in a month too, it would also be quite a challenge since it has a lot of variety, so maybe you could put into practice efficiency techniques too. You'd do great in Game Jams.
