Letting you know the reason yours looks better is that Mario's face takes up the whole head which makes for appealing characters. It wasn't an accident.

Your recreation has some ominous feeling about it. It's like I'm discovering old beta footage that I shouldn't have access to. Would love to see this continue, it's really cool
This was shockingly well done. Some of the textures like the doors and HUD elements you absolutely nailed; even if they weren't entirely accurate, they were stylistically consistent with the original game. It's funny how different minds remember the same thing, I couldn't remember any of these textures for the life of me but when you modeled the castle and bridge I could immediately tell it was too big, having speedrun the game for so many years.
I think some people just see the world differently, if that makes sense? Some people might focus more on the overall shape and proportions of an object, and some more on the color or texture, or small details. It's really interesting how various minds differ.
a lot of textures nintendo used for a lot of their games came from old texture disks which were real life photos that nintendo would scroll through at 16 by 16 to find a good one

Very cool but graphic design is a very different skill being tested than remaking something from memory, hopefully once you are done making textures more of the focus can be on the level geometries - I am so eager to watch this process that I subscribed immediately!
Being completely honest, I hate how underbaked (lack of ambition/content time constraints vs quality maybe?) so many of these concepts end up being. The idea that they're gonna recreate a whole game from scratch, and having to always realize that the creator I'm watching exaggerated that claim by the time they show the end result, or that they prioritized the content part over respecting the game recreation itself. The way you've chosen to do the concept here, was vastly more entertaining to me honestly, even as you revealed the deeper meaning to the title. The end result having accurate mechanics helps it already immensely, but the core concept of recreating an area itself just felt way better structured for viewing in general than some other videos titled similarly.

It would be a ton of fun to hear a soundtrack recreated from memory to go alongside this game (whether by you or someone else), to really give it that uncannily similar feel!
As an environment artist, this is incredible. I love this.
This was a really awesome video, you have a very good feel for texturing and level design, and video editing. I'm glad someone knows how to do all this and make it easy to see what you're doing. That level editor looks very hard to use.
This will be an awesome series if you continue rebuilding the game level by level. I subscribed, and I can’t wait to see more. Freakin’ sweet job, man. This video really shows your love for such a classic game. 👏👏👏
This was really well done, honestly. I'd like to see some content like this from people who have little to no experience with Blender or 3D modeling, as it's clear you're pretty capable of understanding with a lot of this. It would be interesting to see what someone with little knowledge could come up with.
This is really cool. I actually might like your Mario model and icons better than the original, and the HUD overall looks great. Even if you don’t end up redoing that much of the game, I’d be interested in seeing a hack just using your textures and Mario model imported into the original game.
this is so fascinating! hope you upload more of this
this is geniuenly crazy impressive, also love how it's more or less only free programs that you used so technically anyone could do the exact same thing for themselves! still so underrated
