It's all about learning their attack patterns Hell Lehrak was easy as piss to deal with even with the clumsy rock pushing mechanic where Onua looks like he can't get a tight grasp on them
I kind of like the new Armored Core game (AC 6) the boss battles are difficult and you must learn their patterns. Each one is unique and fun! Though, people seem to be complaining about the difficulty for some reason :I
Thank you for the trip down memory lane :-) Paul Arnold and I wrote the music for Lego Bionicle 20 yrs ago! A few things that were new to the developer and to us at the time - we'd come off the back of recording 2 game scores with live musicians and loved it so pushed Argonaut to go in that direction. We didn't really have much of a budget so it was all done on a shoestring - strings in Prague, brass in a local school hall (sorry it's so out of tune!) and Jamiroquai's percussionist Sola Akingbola at Argonaut's studio. They had a clever in-house interactive music system so we were briefed to write the music as full tracks which they'd then cut up into 4 bar looping sections which would alter depending on gameplay - this is long before middleware and completely new to us! I remember finding it hard to write that way so my favourite track was the Glide level of Le Wahi since that was supposed to be one long track as the level was on rails so didn't have to work in 4 bar phrases but watching it here it WAS cut up into 4 bar chunks!! The game was being developed as we scored it so we saw very little of it and we weren't involved in implementing the music. Such is game developement that it's strange but not wholly unusual to say that 95% of this video I've never seen before!!
This is such a cool insight I never expected to get while on this little 4 am nostalgia trip I found myself on. I too write music but just for myself and with friends. I've always wondered how video game music is put together considering the way it changes with gameplay. Cheers!
You and Paul Arnold helped solidify this game into my long term memory with the incredible scores that you guys made in this game. Especially the absolute chaos of that snowboarding level chasing the Bourok before it destroys the village. Thank you for the nostalgia, sir.
I find it hilarious that Gali Nuva teleports in after transforming, Nokama is all "I don't recognise you" but then Gali Nuva's face is on gates around Ga-Wahi.
I liked this game as a kid; but even then, I still thought it could have been better. For one, I hated that Pohatu, my favorite Toa, had a level that was primarily on a mine cart. Also, it was kinda upsetting to NOT be able to play as both the Mata and Nuva forms of ALL of the Toa.
I think it was so you could experience being both a Toa Mata and Nuva in one game but I agree it just makes it annoying you can only play Tahu and Kopaka as Mata. I also hated Pohatu’s level. I even thought my game was broken and had cut out some of the level. He also should have the claws in Nuva form. Still, I nice bit of nostalgia.
21:29 How The six elements of Heroes transforms into new body with six Kranas in the first game? I thought they can collect six kranas the transformation until the golden Android to defeat Evil Monster?
Bro, I never get past the fire level, with the laser scorpion in the lava cavern with the jumping rocks. I never had the hand eye coordination back then, so I just played the first 5 minutes over and over again and then reset.
I got stuck on the lava level for a long time. Couldn't get past the scorpion and then struggled at the boss battle. Then it took me forever to beat the winter level. When I got to the water level, I gave up there. By the time I got to that level, I had been playing the game on and off for who knows how many years, and I just lost all interest in finishing it. It's still nice to see the gameplay of this old classic.
I remember really struggling with the Lewa Nuva level, specifically with the part with the bird. I got so frustrated as a kid and asked my dad for help. One day I came home and my dad had beaten the level for me and I was so astonished. I thought he had to have used a cheat code bc it was so impossible to me. Good times
The GBA version of this game takes longer. You go through each Toa's story as Toa Mata then again as Toa Nuva. The game itself isn't that great but you still have to collect stones and save Matoran but there are no on rails levels that really cut into gameplay that practically omit characters from the experience.
I'll be 28 in April '25, I feel you there. Was completely out of random that I thought of this game to look up a proper playthrough considering I (6-7 yrs) at the time did NOT have the capability to finish the game. The last level I remember was the insane swimming and verticality in the dreaded water level
19:48 You timed that soundtrack perfectly before facing the Bohrok. That soundtrack would cut off on the PS2 version which is why I had to slow down in order to hear the full background music.
Some incredible sound effects in this, from the dying stegasaurus sound of the Makuta taking damage to the absolute nightmare fuel that is the Bohrok scream
The Tahu Nuva level was the bane of my existence back in the day. I think I might have needed my dad to get past it initially. The satisfaction of eventually being able to beat it on my own though...
12:20 Wow. Those screeches are embedded into my memory. As is the awful music mixing (the music itself is great though) and janky UI. What a trip. Thank you. Also, I SPENT SO LONG ON THE KOPAKA MISSION 14:20 - seeing that beginning cutscene again is just something else... I also do NOT enjoy the PTSD of the music at 16:28 ahahah
I remember having this for my Xbox- it felt *impossible* as a kid I remember a few parts in particular that I struggled with: - The Bohrok fight in the whirlpool - The Bohrok chase in the snow - The Rahkshi chase on the lava This does make me excited for Masks Of Power though!
The models may not look pretty, but the gameplay was satisfying. I think it would have benefitted from a longer story, where we could play as all the toa in their original forms, then after collecting all the krana, you unlock new nuva powers. It would have made that whole transition more impactful really, like you're leveling up with the toa, but they tried to smash both stories into one short experience. Still a great time, but man. If only we had more. X)
God I remember having to restart this game so many times as a kid because it kept crashing lol. I was extatic when I finally beat it. Also the bohrok roar still sounds so fearsome and cool years later! Thanks for a trip down memory lane!
Even 20 years ago games had multiple biomes..... The first boss battle was so hard for me when i was younger but once I got past tht point it was a bit easier for me to grasp. The train level was crazy hard.
Lost my shi several times while doing the water level, the snowboarding level chasing the Bourok and the Fn Scorpion boss. This game was incredible on my GameCube back in 2003-4. (I was 6-7)
This brought back some fond memories. I used to be obsessed with bionicle. I read all the books up until the end of the underwater themed sets. I think that place was called Voya Nui? Or maybe that was just before they went underwater. I don’t recall
This was so crazy hard to me as a kid, but I eventually figured it out as I got a little older. The music and sound effects are so nostalgic, I vividly remember trying to control this with the bulky old Xbox controller in my tiny child hands
Honestly it made my fingers beg for mercy as I tried everything to perform a blast BTW did ya know that Onua can also perform that ability despite having no use in his level for it?!
Playing this on windows XP at 10 fps was tough. I don't remember even getting past the first level back in the day lmao. I think I just struggled with the controls.
wait what the heck, you play as the Toa Mata?? I could have sworn you played as the Toa Nova. I mean I thought the whole game was set during Mask of Light, was it not? Takanuva is on the cover!
Nice game. Could be better _if_ these devs didn't tire themselves out and follow what's actually canon in the books, graphic novels, and movies. Edit: Scratch that. Let it be a remaster that connects Bionicle's media from 2001-4.
I just wish the game listed the voice cast.I get that they were trying to go for Mask of Light sound-alikes. And speaking of Mask of Light, I always felt that the aesthetics of this game were a hybrid of that movie plus the LEGO sets.
I heard there were original meant to be 12 levels for this game. 6 for all toa mata and toa nuva. To this day, I wonder if we may find leaks of those intended levels like with the original bionicle PC game and Star fox adventures/dinosaur planet.

@@GavinsGoldenEntertainment2005 Why are you asking me? That's not remotely on the topic I'm on.
As awful as the Gameboy Advance version was, it at least had both Mata and Nuva forms.
In a time before affordable internet, there was this game and an entire day off from school.
I never got past the winter level when I was a kid. Never even played the rest of the game. Still, very nostalgic.

Yeah, I always had trouble with that level, I replayed it recently and got through this whole game in about an hour too.
Fun Fact: Sean Schemmel, the English voice of Goku from DBZ, voiced Makuta in this game.

I know. EA was rushing devs even back in the early 2000s. It sucks more then how short lived Bionicle's revival was.
I never had a memory card so...
What's crazy is that the game was supposed to have even more content and apparently a lot of it was cut
