Nice setup! Quick and easy swap. I use the Pocket 4K on a handheld/shoulder rig and on a MoVI Pro and use that same Manfrotto plate to do the swapping.

@@pierogiannist if you type in “BMPCC Power Supply Mount Plate Adapter for Sony NP F970 Battery” on Amazon, you’ll find a couple of options. All easily screwed to the smallrig plate. I have mine on the smallrig cage whilst handheld. For gimbal, it’s screwed on a quick release 1/4 screw so I don’t add extra weight for the gimbal
I'm glad I found your video, I have a similar configuration and have had a hard time settling on a way to rig it. I like the unconventional way you've mounted your nucleus nano - I'm going to try something similar.
Quick Update: Thanks for the fantastic feedback, really happy about that! In the meantime I have tested and used my setup a lot more and am still enjoying it. The only thing that has been a bit disappointing is the focus motor. It mostly works but sometimes it just fails to connect or simply does not work. Also, DJI has released a firmware update which enables the recording via USB for some cameras. The record button on the Ronin-S Works with the BMPCC 4k but only for starting, stopping does not work.Anyone out there having similar issues? If you guys are interested I might do an in-depth video about the focus motor and the calibration process. If you have any requests for videos let me know!
Love the update! I'm mainly searching for a focus pull solution as well. I like that this adds a dual handle option. It seems like it would be impossible to pull focus using the ronin-s built in function with there only being one handle.
Thanks very much for making this video Piero. Super informative. I assume your focus motor is powered by the included d-tap to usb cable? Could you share how you power your handwheel please? Thanks a lot!
thanks, appreciate your comment! So I initially started with 30 cm rods (about 12 inches) but these are quite long if you don't plan to use a matte box, lens support or anything you'd need rods in front of the lens. So 20 cm (about 8 inch) rods will be just fine.
We ended up doing the same setup on a 6k. We opted for a Andycine monitor and their monitor mount. We like the small rig monitor plate better but it didnt allow easy to spin monitor for selfie or access to the DC power cable on the AndyCine X7 monitor 2200 nits
Hey, thanks for your comment! So the SSD Mount from SmallRig would definitely get in the way of the handle on this setup.. So I would rather consider the SmallRig Handle with the insertion for the T5 SSD.
Piero Istrice cool. If it’s for the hand held side. The gimbal side is what I’m still trying to figure out. Maybe I just get 2 cameras and have 1 with the gimbal & the other on hand held with Uni pod. Thanks.

Will the manfrotto quick release plate work with my Zhiyun Weebill S baseplate? Please let me know as I want to use this setup but I'm not using a Ronin-S.
Great video, really curious to see how you are actually pulling focus with the positioning of this Wireless Nano wheel? is it functional, do you maintain control of your camera when pulling focus?
Only thing missing would be putting this on a tripod or shoulder rig. Would you recommend then that for the tripod to just attach another mannfrotto quick release plate to?
I started with your video first and ended up building the same two in one setup. I did find out later after I bought the DJI R2 it does not power the Tilta Nano. I tried various cables still its a no go. When I plug the Nano Motor into the hand held directly to the V Mount Battery Plate it works great. If anyone else has a solution that would be great. The gimbal set up is already getting extremely heavy with all the extra gear needed to run the BMPCC6K and now have have figure a way adding the V Mount Battery plate as well. Might be time to think about the Sony A7S iii
But when you are on the gimbal setup , how to you charge your bmpcc? If not you need to change the battery of the Pocket every 30 minutes.. . I was thinking to use a smallrig np-f adapter on the top o the Pocket (with that i can have much time recording even on gimbal) but i'm not sure if is to much heavy with that..
Very neat and beautiful! I have quite the same setup. Quick question: you seem to have the Ronin plate off set already in the handheld solution? What happens if you attach hand grips for shoulder rig, mattebox etc.. the lens is not centered compared to rails? :)
@@pierogiannist Ah thats the reason, thanks! Sounds solid. I have thought about it. And I think even if shoulder rig handles attached the offset does not matter that much.
Hey thanks for that, really helpful! You think that the camera fits the ronin-S with a small rig full cage, as from what I can see there is very little free space between the camera and the gimbal on the side of the motor. Thanks!
Not bad but you still need some sort of table to put everything when you disassemble it, + you have to rebalance the plate axis on the Ronin everytime... I had the similar intention of going quickly, I use the QR version of the smallrig half cage, which means I just pull the camera out of the cage to put it on the ronin without removing my handle and monitor ! Even faster :) Only problem is the focus motor I love how you attached the focus wheel to the side handle though
Hey Piero, thanks a lot for this tutorial. I wonder if the half cage can works with the BMPCC 6k PRO, considering the new camera is higher than the 4k/6k and the optional EVF. Any advice?
Thanks man! So I've really only used the camera for shorter takes on the gimbal, that's why I ran it on the LP-E6 batteries. But I'm sure you could plug in a v-mount on a longer cable and maybe just place it on your belt for example if you need it to rung for long takes.
Great Great set up and transition - Question - When Rigged on the Ronin S -Do you put a monitor in the same place as the nano? Sometimes you may not be able to see the screen on the BMPCC and a monitor placed where the focus pull go may be better, yeah?
thanks man! no that won't work. but the ronin-s has 2 mounting options for accessories. so if you put the nuclues-n on the left you can put a monitor on the right!
With the V-Moint batteries I'm always asking myself, how do you use the touchscreen on the back of the camera? Is that really convenient in run and gun situations, when you need to change some settings quickly? Because otherwhise this rig is useless for documentary work.
How much battery life will you have on that ronon gimbal? Bmpcc cameras, especially the 6k one goes through battery life like crazy. If I wanted to shoot on the gimbal, is there a way to attach a batter to the camera with an external sad card (2t card)?
Awesome video!!! Just what I was looking for. Thank you! I imagine you are shooting to CFast cards bc no solution for the Samsung T5 cards. I usually just velcro it to the DJI ronin S Arm, not pretty but works... That Follow focus rail idea is just superb, I was mounting it upside down on top of my half cage which also works great by the way to counter balance. But I prefer your more permanent solution. Genius! What is that little cheese plate for the Dji Ronin S? Thanks!
Hey, thanks so much! :) You are right, I am directly shooting to CFast cards. Maybe have a look at the SmallRig Nato handle with space for a samsung T5 SSD. (Smallrig part No. 2270). Not 100% sure if this works but you could use this one instead of the one I'm using and put the SSD there. The Cheese plate on the Ronin is also from Smallrig. (DJI Ronin-S Mounting Plate) Check the description for the link!
Piero Istrice thanks, love your set up, but the other day I put my manfrotto quick release plate to my small rig u plate like you, but it twist unfortunately and there is no way to attach 2 screws bc the plates do not line up. Do you experience twisting or how have you solved that? Drove me crazy all day and I spent an hour trying to find a solution, but there is no way to screw more than one screw so it will twist. I have all the same parts as you do. Thanks for any help
Thanks so much for the review!! is it confortable to move the focus wheel with the fingers in that position? because i was thinking on getting a side handle focus, but looking at your video I see that is maybe not necesary since I also have the side handle as yours...
Thank you for this video! This looks like it works for the bmpcc 4k with the ronin, but I wonder about the 6k Pro with a lens like the Sigma 18-35mm? Do you think the ronin would take the weight?
Can you connect a vmount battery to the ronin s setup? You transferred them fairly easy but didn't mention anything about having more battery life when you switched to the Ronin s
I personally use LP-E6 batteries. It works fine for me since I only use the gimbal for short durations and I want to keep it light and flexible. I suppose you could attach a v-mount battery to the camera by wearing it on your belt for example but I haven't experimented with this kind of solution. Also you could connect the camera to the Ronin-S' power output via a LP-E6 dummy.
Great video man. Thanks for posting this. Mind if i ask: how comfortable is it to pull focus with the Nucleus M in that configuration on the hand held rig? Is it awkward for your thumb/ hand?
thank you christian! for me it works really well but also I‘ve got quite large hands and can reach the focus wheel easily. not sure how well it works with smaller hands.
@@antonbrabant9929 hello!!! how this work for you? do you prefer the side handle? how is the difference? because I look at this video and I have the same wood handle, but Im a woman and my hans are smaller haha...
Hi Piero, quick question, I heard that having many accessories running of the same power source (v mount) can cause hdmi ports to fry. Did you face this problem with the rig or is the battery usable by many devices at once?. Cheers
I think everything is perfect BUT when switching to the gimbal, you are only running the camera with the lp-e6, that means you have 40 minutes or less of recording time. Any ideas on how to switch to the gimbal while maintaining V-mount power?
cheers for the video, I am running a similar , but If I am doing more ronin work, I got a cable that can power the camera from the ronin as well, and I carry an extra ronin battery with me as well
Nice setup. How well can you focus using the wheel while on a gimbal? Do you have to switch all weight of the gimbal to a single hand while controlling the focus wheel? Would be interesting to see a video on that.
thanks mate! it works really well, you can have a grip on both handles while pulling focus. I must say I have really big hands so I don't know how it works with smaller hands.. I will consider an in-depth video on this
thanks man! well I would not recommend it because the handle would be in the way. Maybe if you get the smallrig handle with the T5 SSD slot and when you switch to the ronin you put in an SD or CFast card. or you try to mount the T5 ssd mount on the camera right but I haven't tried that so can't really tell :/
@@pierogiannist wow didn't knew it existed, it's so slick... Im sure the handgrip can be adjusted to the ronin with another adapter , do you have any idea? I really want to connect the ssd, I was wondering if a full cage could solve the problem, what do you think?
Hello so I want to basically build this rig but with just the half cage the monitor, battery wooden handle. I can’t afford the ronin gimbal yet but I want to build it so that I can finish this build at a later time when I can afford the gimbal. What would you recommend to get first if you could only afford one the tilta focus dial thing or the gimbal. I was leaning towards the focus dial first. Also which one of the tilta focus things do I need the link you put up gives like 3 options on their website ranging from $200 to $600 also do I need any other accessories on that website that you did not list to make it work?!
hey matthew, thanks for your comment. well, initially I would ask myself what you really need (more). It's a weird decision between a gimbal and a remote focus, they're 2 completely different tools. You can definitely make the setup work without the remote focus though, so if you plan on getting a gimbal anyways, why not get it first and save for the remote focus and add that to the setup later? Further, Tilta has multiple focus modules - the one I use is the Tilta Nucleus Nano basic option here: tilta.com/shop/nucleus-nano-wireless-lens-control-system/ You won't need other accessories. Hope that helps!
@@matthewdugger5537 If you mount it the same way I did in this video you won't need it. But if you want to also attach a v-mount plate you will need it.
Hey Glenn, sorry it took so long to answer.. Well you could definitely use the Ronin S focus motor on the Ronin S but I would not recommend it for this kind of switching setup. I assume you could mount the Ronin S focus motor on a handheld rig and also power it but switching the Ronin S remote might be a bit of a struggle and to be honest I'm not sure how it is powered.. So if yo plan to build a flexible setup like this one maybe stick to a "stand alone" focus motor.
It's not tooless if you use the cable clamps to the cage. Still a great vid. I just use the half cage QR. So i take the whole camera out of it and half another QR base clamp on the Ronin-S with the focus motor already on it.

@@pierogiannist Ordered the sidehandle and focus wheel, my hands are tiny. Will post back
@@antonbrabant9929 hello!!! how this work for you? do you prefer the side handle? how is the difference? because I look at this video and I have the same wood handle, but Im a woman and my hans are smaller haha...
Hi Piero, quick question, I heard that having many accessories running of the same power source (v mount) can cause hdmi ports to fry. Did you face this problem with the rig or is the battery usable by many devices at once?. Cheers
good question! so I can't relate, have never had any problems with this. even with all ports used.
to you just charge the camera with the normal batteries when it is on the gimbal?
Hey man how would you go about adding an SSD bay to this setup?
I think everything is perfect BUT when switching to the gimbal, you are only running the camera with the lp-e6, that means you have 40 minutes or less of recording time.
Any ideas on how to switch to the gimbal while maintaining V-mount power?
Does the quick release adapter also take Manfrotto 500Pl base plates, haven’t found this information anywhere, would be awesome at least!
hmm.. that's a good questions. I can't actually confirm because I don't have the long 500PL bas plate but if I had to guess I would say it fits.
Can a nucleus motor / tilta slide handle be used with the ronin r2?
cheers for the video, I am running a similar , but If I am doing more ronin work, I got a cable that can power the camera from the ronin as well, and I carry an extra ronin battery with me as well
I will consider an in-depth video on this
Hi Pietro, thanks for this amazing tutorial.... is it possible to mount samsung ssd over the cage on this setup?
thanks man! well I would not recommend it because the handle would be in the way.
Hi bro. I just got my gimbal, is there a way to put the V Mount battery to the gimbal? or would it throw it out of balance ???
Can you mount the focus wheel directly onto the ronin
definitely!
Piero Istrice my 6K just came in today and this video has me excited thanks man
Hi, thanks for the informative video. What lens do you use, and do you ever use the Dtap in the Ronin S to charge the camera?
thanks! for shooting this video I was using the Fuji X-T3 with the Fujinon XF 35mm f/1.4 R. I haven't used the Ronin S to power the camera so far.
What's the weight of this rig? I would be putting a transmitter on that, wondering if that's overkill for the Ronin, or typically done.
Nice review!!!!
Would that work with the Ziyhun 3S ??
thanks man :) eermmm good question.. I can't say for sure because I've never tested this but I would think you can make it work.
Also do I need the small rig baseplate dual rod clamp thing for the nano tilt focus dial thing to work?
hey matthew, thanks for your comment. well, initially I would ask myself what you really need (more). It's a weird decision between a gimbal and a remote focus, they're 2 completely different tools. You can definitely make the setup work without the remote focus though, so if you plan on getting a gimbal anyways, why not get it first and save for the remote focus and add that to the setup later? Further, Tilta has multiple focus modules - the one I use is the Tilta Nucleus Nano basic option here: tilta.com/shop/nucleus-nano-wireless-lens-control-system/
You won't need other accessories. Hope that helps!
@@matthewdugger5537 If you mount it the same way I did in this video you won't need it. But if you want to also attach a v-mount plate you will need it.
The options for the kit are:
None
W/ P-tap cable
W/ nucleus m motor
When you say the basic option do you mean the kit that says none?
exactly, go with "none"
it looks great but the manual follow focus obstructs the path of the ronin s arm when panning
This is actually genius.
this comment is genius! :) thanks!
Is it possible to use the Ronin S focus motor instead of the Tilta?
@@refokusdk not yet
Have you had any problems since then? I read powering BMPCC4K and monitor form the same source can burn HDMI port. did u experience this?
Nope, no problems there. Never heard of such a problem and I've used the setup many many hours last year.
I do not like how you put the follow focus, but I do appreciate the rest!
Thanks😊
Or have 2 cameras! One for gimbal and one handheld
even better if you have the 💰!
But it's to heavy when you go out!
Is the battery pack a little bit in the way if using the main screen?
