    The famous formula F = m*a actually explains why heavier cameras shake less. For the same force applied by the operator's shaky hands, the camera with the highest mass will be the one with the less acceleration.

    I have the 6K with the Tilta screen mod. If ever you want the machine for stripped down shooting this is superb. I shoot with a modified strap, no cage, screw on ND filter and a home made screen visor. It goes with me everywhere.

  • @morgondickerson2086
    @morgondickerson2086 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Tilta is offering a mod kit to make the built in screen able to tilt. So that might help if you need to go super light without a monitor. Also, that kit puts a USB-C plug in the empty spot where the screen used to be, and you can plug an NVMe drive in there for even more portability.

    • @kolecava
      @kolecava 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Imho ie invest in a good small 5" monitor. Its brighter so no need for sunhood in daylight and less prone to damage opposed to the tilta mod. The P4K screen is not that bright in daylight.

    • @morgondickerson2086
      @morgondickerson2086 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kolecava I agree. I was only suggesting the tilta mod in the case that you wanted to go super light without a monitor.

    I prefer the monitor mounted without the bracket it just adds vertical height for no reason when you can simply add the monitor to the end of the handle with a smallrig monitor mount, makes it smaller.

    I'm hoping BM will release the battery grip soon. I think the grip is a great way of extending shooting times. I don't mind using different batteries. But, aside from that, I use v-mount batteries. As far as stability goes, I already have the Pana-Leica 12-60mm f2.9 lens with IS from my GH5 days. So, that helps a lot. And yes, making the camera heavier is a great way to help with stabilization as well. I don't mind handheld if its relatively smooth. I don't like floaty (like you're in a boat), or jittery handheld shots.

    I have the Smallrig quick release half cage so I can remove the camera entirely when I want to go incognito. When I do that, I use a stabilised lens (Leica 12-60). The rest of the time I use Meike Cine lenses with no stabilisation and it's fine - gets trickier with the longer lenses - 50mmm is doable hand held unstabilised, 80 isn't really

    • @matteobertoli

      How can you live? I mean we survived 120+ years without a stabilized sensor, I guess you just need to learn how to operate a proper cinema camera. That’s about it. Keep in mind, professional cameras don’t have stabilized sensor.

    Great video! I recently sold my Nikon and got the BMPCC4K, partly thanks to you, as I realized filmmaking is what I want to be focusing on. I’ve been putting together a rig for it for an upcoming trip to Japan. Being new to cinema cameras, there were lots to learn, but I feel like what you said in this video validated a lot of my choices for the rig. Maybe I’ll make a video about how I went about it when I get back.
    Right now, my main worry is what lens to bring. I’ve been eyeing the Sigma 18-35 (original choice, I know), but it’s a bit on the large and heavy side. An alternative would be something native like the Olympus 12-40 2.8 Pro. I think I’d generally prefer a single zoom lens and I’m not that worried about DoF for this trip...

    Okay I shoot with a GH5, but this is video helpful and still applicable to that in many run n gun situations if using non native primes for instance. I have been contemplating a matte box (not for run n gun) but I am unsure of whether it will actually be needed apart from a convenient way to hold filters? Do you think they help with IQ at all or do they just make the camera look more pro?

    • @matteobertoli
      @matteobertoli  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Tucker matte box doesn’t make your camera look more professional, matte box is ESSENTIAL so you can use good filters and yes, the image quality is gonna be drastically better. If you put side by side something shot with a variable ND and nisi irnd in the matte box you are not gonna shoot with the variable anymore. It’s literally day and night.

      @@matteobertoli Okay thanks for your reply, the "professional" comment was a little tongue in cheek because I have seen a few TH-camrs comment that that is all a matte box is good for. Having never used one I was interested in your opinion on the value of them and as I consider whether to invest in one and a set of filters. I have never used a variable only standard screw in ND's.

    Lovely tips video. Of course, shooting wide makes camera shake less apparent. Thing is, sometimes the job requires a longer lens. Try that hand-held with a massive rig. I give it 3-minutes before gyro stabilization is viewed in a different light entirely. Anyway, thank you for taking time to share details of your rig setup. You may have produced the single best video on TH-cam regarding setting up a BMPCC for run-and-gun work which I've seen. Well done! Last thing, what's your opinion of what you'd want to record something with fast action like this - vimeo.com/457151049 - where the distance to the subject is significantly greater and is moving widly? This used an iPhone, which proves good light makes up for small sensors. Anyway, I'm specifically wondering about using a Lumix G X Vario 12-35mm f/2.8 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S. lens (like a 24-70) expressly because of the gyroscopic assist in stabilizing to help me. Thoughts, please?

    • @matteobertoli

      Nathan Casares it slows down the footage cause your project frame rate is 24p. If you keep it 60p you are gonna see the sound perfectly synced

      I’m also curious about this one if you get the chance to reply. I know your full rig consists of NiSi irnd’s but it seems like you’re just running with a Hoya Vari and the black pro mist and no ir cut, is that correct? Has this given you issues with color casts from the Hoya?

    Awesome rig, Matteo!! I love your content. Straight to the point, no filler. Keep it up!
    Off-topic question (I'm posting here because I didn't get to your video last week):
    In the description of this (th-cam.com/video/BAeWPVjM7uY/w-d-xo.html) video, you mentioned how you thought ISO 640 was the sweet spot between noise/color shift and dynamic range. Then, in last week's false color video, you mentioned how you only shoot at 400. Why is that? Is it a noise issue? At 640 you get almost 3/4 of a stop more than 400. That could be the difference between a bright highlight, and a clipped highlight... Just curious.
    Anyway, love your stuff!!
    Thanks.

    • @matteobertoli
      @matteobertoli  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Janana Beats thanks man! Yeah 640 is great and I would use it in extreme dynamic range scenarios, but it’s still a bit too noisy for regular stuff, at least for me!
