    Here is a video about shooting handheld with the BMPCC4K / 6K.
    Do you guys prefer to shoot handheld or on a tripod ?
    Cheers,

      To be sincere I prefer shooting on my shoulder rig but for low shots I use the cage. And for mobility, a cheap steadycam. Never used a gimbal. And i shot on a tripod when it’s absolutely necessary. You have beautiful content! Keep it that way!

      I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of hand held. I always find it distracting. I prefer smooth floating camera movements.

    I found that having my battery (an np-f) sticking out the back of the camera about 15cm on rails a great option for stability. It means I can hold the camera grip and lens, and press it against my chest for a much more stable base than my arms at the expense of making the camera footprint a fair bit bigger. Definitely find it much more stable than using the top handle, for me anyway :)

    Insightful content as usual. I have noticed that, as neat and as fun as it is to use gimbals, external monitors and focus wheels, I never actually end up using them or get bothered by the extra time I need to set up. I'm glad to hear I'm not alone with this discovery, so thanks for reassuring that less hardware doesn't have to mean less beautiful shots. :)
    In tip #7 you mention that you stabilize in post; coming from phone cameras and doing my first few shots with my brand new BMPCC4K at the time, I was almost devastated looking through the footage afterwards and noticing - even though I was even using a gimbal - how "shaky" things looked. Stabilizing in post almost felt like "rescuing" the material I thought I screwed up, so having you mention that you're stabilizing in post to get the final touches done just took a huge load of my chest.
    I'm not sure what would be the right format to present it, but I'd love to see how some of the establishing shots you showed here look before applying the post-stabilization.

    • @OfTwoLands
      @OfTwoLands  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks a lot for watching !! Yeah I think gear is fun but only when it helps and doesn't get in the way.
      Haha yeah I stabilise a bit, but like I said only for certain shots. I don't really any video that show before and after apart from the Crane 2S video.
      It is mainly micro shakes when it comes to establishing shots.

  • @BrianArtka

    Great tips as always Flo! I just want to reiterate a few you mentioned for the filmmakers just starting out.
    1. Weight.. SO important for steadier handheld work (as Flo said, Handheld doesn't just mean your hands. Handheld in Hollywood, for what its worth, usually involves a shoulder rig) More weight = Steadier shots. Just make it comfortable for you.
    2. Points of Contact. People don't talk about this as much, but it's so important for steady shots. Left hand on left part of camera, right hand on right side, maybe a EVF, or elbows in and rest the camera on your belly... all help with making stable shots.. and go with the flow.
    3. Movement. I keep saying "steady" but too steady as in, pure gimbal work, unless its motivated in the story, just seems fake. When you walk, you are seeing like a gimbal. Movement is natural, and it should assist the story you are making. Love the fact you mentioned it should be organic, and what you are filming it totally fits.
    Anyway, love the tips, reiterates what I try to do on every film shoot ;)

    hell YES this is the guide i need. it still dosent really help when im trying to film while riding a bike though...
    although one thing i find useful is if youre using a DSLR or mirrorless with a camera strap, shorten it if possible, and put it around your neck and pull it taught to get better footage. helps a lot especially if youre in a situation with a stock camera, meaning not a lot of size or weight. like a kit DSLR or mirrorless

    you, and other videos shot with your hands on a movie set, inspired me, you have great material. For some reason, such a hand-made picture is better perceived, closer to us by nature. And, after 9-10 years of shooting on a gimbal, I want to start shooting with my hands, because I have tried shooting like this many times, and I understand what freedom of movement it is, as well as the convenience of choosing a composition. tell me, is this object 16-35 enough for you to constantly shoot with your hands? do I often have to connect a teleconference?

    Would love some input in a couple questions,
    Should I invest in a wireless follow focus with the idea that I will also be able to use it on a gimbal or have an AC or is that mechanical one way better and more responsive?
    How do you deal with rolling shutter? Especially with the pockets usually when I see handheld its all jellowy
    Do you think the sigma 18-35 is a good alrounder for the 6K? or would it be better to get a similar 4/3s lens and get the 4K?

    • @OfTwoLands
      @OfTwoLands  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      - I have never used a wireless follow focus but have heard only good things :).
      - Rolling shutter has never been an issue for me. I don't shoot with a lot of crazy movements or quick pans though.
      - The sigma is an excellent lens and a must have for any 6K owner in my opinion. However it's much easier to find an all rounder lens for the 4K like the Lumix 12-35.

    Useful advice! I honestly prefer using some kind of tripod or monopod but as you pointed out it isn’t always possible. I’ve recently been practicing handholding using a top handle while focusing manually. I kind of suck at it, so I probably fork out the $ for the follow focus. from Tilta. That’s how I found your channel, by looking for focus follow (follow focus) reviews. Glad I happened upon it.

    • @OfTwoLands
      @OfTwoLands  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you !! The reason I use the 16-35 is that I shoot photos with a full frame camera and the sigma 17-50 is for Aps c sensor.
      I use the sigma 18-35 for video only (interior, interviews and youtube mostly) and is hard to beat for range, aperture and price.

    Great video. I'm wondering about your exposure method since you're not relying on ND filters apparently, for what I see on your setups. Are you using just the camera settings? I'm not experienced with black magic cameras so forgive me if the questions sounds dumb.

    I used to sit down and pan a camera on my knee, then stabilize it lol. Slowmo really makes it hard to have bad looking handheld footage. I recently got my R5 RAW footage to match the RED's really good, so I have been filming more with the R5 now. That IBIS is so nice, especially with a lens that has IS, I was able to walk down a rocky trail and it looked fine lol.

    Great tips - a note on breathing though - Breathe! I mean settle the rhythm of your breathing and breath deep, natural intercostal diaphragmatic breaths. The same way an actor breathes. Tremendous stillness can be achieved. The idea is to avoid shallow, jerky breaths that only open the top of the lungs. This shallow and uncomfortable breathing can be exacerbated by too much tendency to hold your breath. Sometimes a controlled holding on breath can really focus movement (or stillness) but unless the out breath is equally controlled it will follow that the shot gets fidgety. If I (rarely) want to emphasise my presence as metapraxis (a great deal of you tube content screams 'camera' rather than subject or 'atmosphere' and is dull as a result - regardless of technical virtuosity in post), I can let the rhythm of breath and steps gently undulate into a hand held move. Most of the time however I am interested in calm and centred movement that favours the subject and not the presence of the camera. Tai chi is useful as a starting point! Thanks for the thoughtful and experienced tips.

  • @narrativasavulsas
    @narrativasavulsas ปีที่แล้ว

    Just one thing. Holding your breath is not the way you can better stop shaking. The best moment is when you just breathe out. That's a natural pause for the body and that's the moment when real snipers shoot their target.

      @@OfTwoLands I love it so far. Light, compact, the 7” screen is a game-changer. I think for longer lenses, I’m definitely going to need some rails and matte box w/ NDs to make it as heavy as possible, but for getting out there and shooting I’m so happy to finally come home with images that I don’t have to fight. That’s a camera thing, not necessarily a rig thing, but thank you for sharing with us the rigs and your footage. Helped me finally make up my mind. • @OfTwoLands
      @OfTwoLands  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's actually a lot easier than it sounds but it depends on the lenses you use too. I found that focusing can help you being steady since you essentially touch the lens so it adds another point of contact. It becomes with lenses that have a long focus throw. Canon EF for examples are super easy.
