  • Today, we're taking a look at Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space, a title that released in 2003 during the "Golden Age" of Gundam games that were released for the PlayStation 2 console.
The game includes a fantastic re-telling of the third 0079 Gundam movie/later third of the original anime in its included Story Mode and much, much more. If you were ever a fan of Journey to Jaburo, an earlier PS2 Gundam title, this game is essentially its unofficial sequel.
Thanks for stopping by, let me know your thoughts down below!

Can we also establish the fact this was the ONLY game to feature Stardust Memory's campaign outside of a Super Robot Wars or G Generation game?

Funny enough, "Stardust Memory" was the ONLY campaign I completed in this game. For some reason, I was all over the place with the campaigns and stuff and eventually burned out and moved on to another game. I'm about to connect my Ps2 slim and Play encounters in space in a little, since I forgot how amazing this game ultimately is! I kinda wished G-Gundam and Gundam Wing had small campaigns too, but I do feel greedy for wishing that with soo much content already there!!!

@@adamharits2630 Ok, I can definitely agree with you on that. It DOES have those campaigns (it even has an 08th MS Team campaign!) .....I just wish they had a game in the vein of either Gundam vs Zeta Gundam or even Missing Link that had those campaigns in it. I guess what I'm saying is that it really sucks we don't have that many Gundam Action styled games out there with full campaigns from each story....

Encounters in Space was how I finished the original Gundam show when I was a kid since it got pulled due to 9/11 happening. Played it again about a year back and it really does hold up. Also it introduced me to Johnny Ridden and the High Mobility Zaku II which both are easily in my top five favorite Gundam characters and suits.

I was rushing to the comments to say exactly this. It was how i got to experience the ending of the original show!! Also back at that time Stardust Memory was on the late night time slots so I never got to see it in full, only watching the Kou and Gato fight post Solomon (which is quite the episode to start on!) when I was over a friends house. I got so used to the voices from this game that when I finally got the DVDs a year or so later it took some getting used to.

Ah, Encounters in Space. The game that kept me from seeing the good route in Thoroughbred mode no matter how hard I tried to trigger it.
It's interesting to look back as a somewhat obsessive Gundam fan and see just how many side stories were first officially introduced to the US in this game. There's a Stardust Memory radio drama episode, the Mayfly of Space, Thoroughbred (original and alternative versions), the video game version of Blue Destiny (the one volume manga came out first in the states I think), and the old MSV stories for Johnny and Shin. Combined with the second run variations in the Main story (including more TV series specific elements and crossovers with Johnny, Shin, and Gato) and the pretty brutal but fun mission mode, it really had a lot to come back to. The successor game Gundam Seed: Never Ending Tomorrow, unfortunately doesn't quite live up to Encounters in Space in replayablity and can feel extra grindy with the new assist characters, but it's also a fun game.

I absolutely love this game and i still have my copy. To go along with what you said this game also has a ton of replayability. White base has the movie and TV mode with different allies and encounters, and secret what if senarios based on score. For example one route on Solomon doesnt end with the big zam fight...but against gato and his Rick Dom. Even has two new animated cutscenes. Thoroughbread also has two main routes with a good and bad ending for each.
And a tip for scoring. its not just multi lock but some ships dont explode all the way after being killed. keep hitting them till they explode again for double score.
Great video and sorry for the wall of text, this game just has so much to offer and unlock. it and zeonic front are my favorite two ps2 gundam games. Looking forward to more videos.

I remember playing this game when I was around 2-3 at the time. This was a couple years after its initial release (probably around 2008-2009). This game was what got me into Gundam, and I cannot be more thankful thanks to this game. Although this was my very first game I had ever played as well as my first Gundam game, I remember playing some of the missions. Just some memories which I can remember while some are vague, leaving me curious to learn more about this game I played long ago. I've watched playthroughs which makes the whole gameplay very enticing in my own opinion. As someone who's been a fond of this game, I'm glad that this game is getting more recognition from people like you in the U.S. as Gundam wasn't considered to be that enticing to the western audience. I do hope in the near future, if I get a chance, get a hold of this game again and relive my early childhood. This game will always be in my heart.

I LOVE this game and played it a ton back in the day. I don't remember if I S-ranked every mission, but I tried my damnedest. In addition to being just an all-around blast to play, I also appreciated how it provided tons of history and lore for the entirety of the early Universal Century: you sure as heck weren't gonna be able to play as Shin Matsunaga in any other title, especially at the time.
Being able to create custom pilots was fun, too, and I created any number of different ones. I remember there being special perks for using the names of certain Sunrise staffers: "Mark Simmons" was one that did...something. I don't remember at this point, but it was still a fun bonus.
As much as I love the gameplay of the Extreme Vs series, I miss the storytelling and lore that this title provided. I wish they would revisit this gameplay concept, tighten it up and expand the scope to encompass more of the Gundam universe(s).
All that said, my favorite part of Encounters in Space was being able to play as the Val Varo, which is my favorite mobile armor. It was confined to versus mode, but I still put tons of time into it.

Every cutscenes in this game is actually redone, and remastered, a small taste of the great 0079 remaster that we've never gotten. BUT, the dubbing is kinda bad, removing most of the cadence and emotions from most of the characters.
