Today, we're checking out Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation.
The 2007 title was launched as, to the surprise of many, an Xbox exclusive title. But, setting this aside, how does the game compare to previous entries in the series?
Does it hold a candle against the PlayStation 2's "Holy Trinity" of games? Ace Combats 4, 5, and Zero?

ACE6 is definitely carried by its gameplay more so than its story, but I always found the story to be serviceable. It got the usual Ace Combat heart and sincerity to it which makes the story work well enough but it surely won't win any writing awards. What I like the most about it though is the setting since it's one of the rare instances where we're taken away from Osea and get a chance to see other unrelated nations get into conflict. Hope ACE8 does something similar with its gameplay and story setting.
This, also I hope AC8 gets a coop mode, because AC7 not having one is a shame and absolutely unacceptable.

The story is a bit goofy but in that charming way a B action movie is.
May have been an Xbox exclusive but DAMN The Liberation of Gracemeria slaps.
The in cutscene story definitely need more time to cook, like O know what they trying to do but it just too much for the story run time to be good. The in mission story (chatter between ally units) is actually pretty good it's make you feel how tight nit the Emmeria military is especially airforce.
And in my opinion I think the game play and mission structure here is the peak of Ace Combat hope they bring this back in the next game.
I agree that the game's cutscene story is probably the weakest end of the game, but the mission story more than makes up for it. Really, without all but like three cutscenes you really don't lose anything. The thing that resonated with me with 6 is that your nation is written to be, although caught unawares at the start, entirely logical and more or less competent. You actually feel like you're part of something rather than tugging the plot forward by your sheer force of will and defiance of g-forces. You're clearly the best of Emmeria's pilots, but your allies are useful and actually down enemies quite regularly even without the allied attack function. The missions just felt good, generally the right amount of stress but with an actually generous time limit so you can plan your moves.
The lowest point for gameplay for me was the Pasternak fight. It's fairly easy when you're not going for score and it's the biggest pain in the neck when shooting for S rank, pretty much impossible to do without the CFA44 for yourself. Strigon SU33s weren't bad to fight, but them having higher acceleration rates and speeds than any player aircraft leads to less engaging dogfights and more hit and run jousting, which I find far less enjoyable (or just pressing the I Win button by using allied attack).
I was initially not a fan of the Shoot mechanic, but I warmed up to it in how it can make for interesting off-aspect shots and rewards patience and positioning in a dogfight. It does, however, make multi-locks and QAAMs mostly worthless, since they're not afforded the same guidance and are generally insanely slow and incredibly dumb. Semi-actives or air-to-ground stuff would be my go-to specials for almost every case. The fact the gun is actually useful in this was also a lovely feature, especially coming to it after playing a lot of 7. If I could mix 7's missiles and graphics with 6's everything else, it'd be a perfect gameplay experience to me. It would probably also melt every console on the market because 7 on its own tried to melt my One and stuttered on my PS4 on big missions, but that's beside the point.
6 is a mixed but overall positive bag. It and 4 have the best overall tone to me, and the music of 6 has just stuck in my head. Chandelier is haunting in a way a lot of the other final missions aren't.
I had issues with the game but I still like it.. I got it at the end time of the 360 life cycle and the the Servers were going down for Assault Horizon. I found the content you bought had a Server Check, so even though I still have the OG game, and I haven't deleted my Files and the DLC files is there, the game can't check the Servers which means it can't confirm my DLC, so I can't use any of the special skins or jets I bought. (I want my anime girls and my purple F-14 that shoots cherry blossom pink missiles darn it.)
Anyways. The game, I always kinda called Ground Combat 2 Most of the missions were 4-5 ground based objectives with 1 objective of Air to Air Combat that wasn't kill bomber squadron from blowing up your tanks. It made most of the Air Superiority fighters obsolete for most missions. While with Multirole, because of the High G Turns, and Squad Attack Commands, the enemies were so high tuned that at times you struggle and will fail several of the sub objectives cause you wasted so much time, which can make you get a lower score or fail the mission entirely.
I S-ranked most of the game just by going on a A-10 forgetting the AA objectives
The other thing that annoyed me was the Smoke. For it's time it had some solid graphics, but because of this a lot of the missiles had very thick plume clouds. It made it easier to see where missiles are shooting from and doesn't entirely bother you when dogfighting and turning a lot, but if you doing Tunnel Runs or gunning a target that goes in a straight line, holy crap I don't know how many times I faced planted into the ground, walls, or even other jets cause being smoke blinded. 90% of my deaths came with the line "oh crap I shot a missile"
Even then it was a good experience and I did like playing this game a lot, and if my 360 didn't make my fire alarms go crazy I still be playing it to this day.
Honestly for an exclusive they really had something here. I was impressed about how fun it was to play and how good the aircraft looked. I especially loved looking at the afterburners since the heat waves from the engine would actually distort the look of the thrusters. A really cool detail. Sadge I couldn't get the CFA or the ACE difficulty because I believe they are DLC, and that DLC is no longer sold so i cannot 100% this game anoymore. But still really enjoyed it nonetheless.
The CFA isn't dlc. You just have to complete the game on hard difficulty on a new sp playthrough

I have very fond memories of AC6. For all its faults, the story had a certain charm to it that’s hard not to find endearing, and it has some of my favorite missions in the entire series. The Battle of Silvat STILL gets me amped when I play it today.
For my money it has the best gameplay and combat mechanics of any game in the series. I really wish the Allied Command feature had carried over into subsequent games. That’s one thing that’s always kind of bugged me about Project Aces: each game has cool features that never carry over to subsequent entries. Hell I’m still waiting to have a full squadron to command ala AC5.
i played AC6, on the very same emulator actually and i agree, the story as well as some gamplay features made the game subpar compared to the PS2 era. having said that, the game is still fun.

6 is probably my second favorite, just behind 5 and ahead of 7.
Solid take, personally my top spot is between 4 and Zero as of right now, but honestly every game I've played in the series has unique strong points.
@@JarboeGaming in all honesty, those are three of the 4 that Ive played, the 4th being Assault Horizon. I never got much of a chance to play some of the earlier ones. I also just prefer being able to choose my wingmen’s jets.
I really liked the screen showing the target view, and it could have been improved and be on one of the MFD's when in cockpit view in AC7. Why was AC6 so yellow? And then Assault Horizon came along with better graphics, if nothing else.
But, I really enjoyed AC6, having control of team strategy and felt closer to his wingman on this, especially Shamrock attacking first on the last mission and getting shot down, amusing how nobody cares about the backseater though!

I think the story is alright, but every time the children are in the scene it's just groan worthy.
I don't know why they needed them in the story like at all.
I only played once it became emulatable. I enjoyed it quite a bit the missions were quite fun though a sever lack of a2a only missions, and, however the pasternak fight on the highest difficulty was not at all interesting and it was banging my head against the wall until i beat him, doubly so because i got screwed by his introduction cutscene while i was without health on a runway.
Solid gameplay and being able to chose what part of the map to approach to give it replay value is a solid addition as well as landing on airfields was pretty cool for the series.
I think however the enemies are bit too much i would often end up flying about the battlefield with a ton of red arrows behind me all pumping out missiles which was kind of ridiculous to see.
It can run now on Emulators? Awesome!
The “god forsaken reason” why it was on 360 was because the PS3 was infamously hard to develop.
Indeed + Xbox 360 was released earlier so developer kits for it became available earlier. Considering how Ace Combat 6 was released in 2007 and that was only the first full year for PS3, its no wonder it only came to Xbox 360, plus at the time Microsoft was pushing heavily to get Japanese developers to support Xbox more. Lets not forget that original Dead Rising and Lost Planet from Capcom were originally Xbox 360 exclusives too so Microsoft really managed to convince Japanese devs to jump onboard at the cost of Japanese developers ignoring PS3 early on
I never compare any other AC to the holy PS2 trinity, but 6 honestly holds a place on my ranking above 7 for sure. It's really weird because everything you mentioned good and bad about 6 is the complete opposite of how I feel about 7 aside from 7's graphics and whatnot.

Ah, where it all began as far as my Ace Combat journey is concerned.
I still play it to this day on my Xbox One (thank you, backwards compatibility!).
Damn only 700k sales???? I’m only of the lucky ones then, still have my stick/throttle set that came with the special edition when I preordered my copy. Definitely a fan of the guns power, way more realistic than previous and follow on games with how easily the guns shred other planes as they should.

In 2006-2010 pretty much no dev knew how to make games for the PS3 because they made it so hard to develop for in the hopes that devs would make their games exclusive to the PS3 since it was supposed to sell twice as much as the PS2 did. That didn't happen & in fact the PS3 sold incredibly poorly until like 2011 & because of that no dev wanted to make games for it. Which is how you end up with things like AC6 being Xbox exclusive. Would it have sold better on PS3? Maybe? But that version would've been worse then what we got on Xbox & probably would've done more damage to the ip then Assault Horizon would. But yeah the 360 was dominating the PS3 until the end of it's life so alot of Japanese devs took the chance with the Xbox since it had the larger audience & cost less to make games for & it didn't work out very well most of the time as Japanese games market was on the decline during the time with western games like Gears of War, CoD, & Halo dominating the market on a US focused console.
I think Melissa losing her husband, Shamrock losing his wife and daughter, and then having them meet at the end was the most evil thing Project Aces has ever done lol

In terms of ace combat I'd gave to place this at my number 1 with the only game ranked higher being Project Wingman
I still hated the idea of this being only Xbox exclusive I originally thought they struck a deal with Microsoft to make it an exclusive to show off the 360. But I will say I love the gameplay and sure only 15 aircraft but having multiple weapons make up for it and something I like that Zero didn’t have was having the ability of switching your wingman’s plane. Even the missions the way they are designed are better than what Zero had but yeah comparing a PlayStation 2 to an Xbox 360 is unfair but I wish we could of have those features 6 had that Zero should of had.
I feel the story suffers from something that I like to call "Other M Syndrome". They tell us everything that they show us in such overly-padded and descriptive monologues as if they didn't trust the audience's ability to pick up on subtext.

I mean if they would have cut the crap with the woman searching for her child and the bunch of soldiers chasing after a treasure and just focused on the history or Gracemeria and Estovakia and put more emphasis on the background of the war, it would have been just fine like that. Because when the story did focus on that in some or the mission briefings, that was actually something I did find myself interested about

Considering in Japanese Super GT racing the Hatsune Miku Goodsmile Racing team is one of the most successful teams in the series anime girls do increase performance of machinery. Joking aside it’s more related to the fact the crowd fund sponsorships and weebs tend to blow a lot of their money on such things. Also it is referred to itasha in Japanese which translates roughly to “Painful Car” clearly a name from those who are not fans of such things.

The one hope I have about Xbox N Microsoft drastically reducing their expensivity is that this will make it onto other consoles. This is in my Top three.

So I only recently played this, and it was by using backwards compatibility on my Series X. Lemme tell you, those bumped up framerates and polished graphics made the gameplay an amazing experience!
Can't say the same for the story, though. My second playthrough, I ended up skipping all of the cutscenes lol
100% agree with your assessment of the game! Ace Combat 6 was made infinity better by just, skipping the cut scenes entirely the namco/project aces melodrama and cheese was in overdrive unfortunately. Coming off Ace Combat Zero i loved the new higher density gameplay, checkpoints, and bosses as much as i HATED the story. Zero set the bar so high, 6's story, acting, and art is a low point in the series from my perspective. That said, the Kelly's Heroes reference with the tank crew side plot was probably the only part of they story i enjoyed.
I hope Ace Combat 6 gets ported to PC one day.
I hope all of the Ace Combat games get PC ports/remasters, but AC6 especially-given how it prevented the largest number of Ace Combat fans from ever being able to play it solely due to its exclusivity.
Doubt it since the licenses on the planes used in the games have expired similar way the car licenses expire in racing games.
So unless they decide to do like a remastered collectionz which I think is rather unlikely, they are never gonna see direct ports to PC

videogame from bandai namco called Idolm@ster and they shared something in common, is the soundteam, some member from the idolmaster series are composer for Ace combat Too, audio design too , and well another factor idolmaster is a flag series on japan too , is a recurrent meme at this point and that the repeat the story with Assault horizon too, some people have hope for aCE COMBAT 7 SKIN TOO , still waiting here

What settings were you using on Xenia Jarboe, I cant for the life of me to get it to run properly with my high end shit box.

Did you have issues with running on Xenia? Last time I tried a few years ago I was getting visual issues in mission (black triangles all over the ground) and cutscene video playing at super speed
So the only issues I had were with cutscene audio, the audio will cutout at times, and the music sounded wonky.
Smoke and clouds are a bit pixillated too, but it's VERY playable I would say.
If you do some googling of AC6 on Xenia, you'll find there's a build floating around out there that rectifies the black triangle issue.

@@JarboeGaming The cutscene audio isn't emulator-exclusive, I don't think. I played it backwards compatible on my Series X, and the dialogue audio quality still sounded really crunchy.
have you ever talked about ace combat assault horizon 3ds becuase that game has a lot of nostlgia for me and i remember playing that for hours and hours
I remember as a kid i asume this was in 2007 or 2008 going to a Costco and back when they sold games on discs , and in this pastic cover was a copy of Ace Combat 6, i didnt grew up with games and ive always loved aircraft, i didnt had a 360 and i knew it but i still wanted ,why?the art on the cover and the screenshots at the back blew my mind and in the 40 to an hour that we where at the store my mind was creating the plot of the game , stuff like "who are you? ,"what are you fighting ?" i fell in love with the art style reading the small parts of info on the box , i didnt want to leave it , but i had to because of course my parents wouldnt buy it , felt kinda sad ,that little box was a wonder for me, something new .Guess i was just carrying it around so they would see it and buy it :)
And for the next 12 years Ace Combat 6 was a few trailers on yt and eventually i knew what the story was about and knowing how it ends , and a few years ago finally got a 360 and one of the first games i got was AC6, at the time i got it i was in a deep depression, some heavy stuff and scary (im better now ). When i had the box in my hands , for a Few moments i felt happy, i felt like that that kid at the Costco, i ignored my problems for a few mins .Sadly i got back to reality lol, but when i Played 6 i would forget eveything again , that was 3 or 2 years ago , Also my xbox did a weird sound when i played this game in particular so couldnt play it (kinda like a curse lol) but i got it fixed (i think), i havent finished it , Im at the start mission button for the final one , i feel like if i finish it , i will loose the connection with that kid all those years ago but on the other hand i wanna move on .
Kinda cheesy maybe lol,but just like the AMAZING song of this AMAZING!!! OST , im looking foward to a "Brand New Day".

EDIT- 2 weeks ago i finished the game (its the start of march now ). A part of me wanted to move on and i think step by step im accepting that some parts of my life are in the past , for better or worst .I think/hope that in the future i can experience things that i didnt allowed myself because of fear of the future or hoping that everything would go back to when i was a kid but thats just no way to live .
Besides "A Brand New Day " is beautiful and gave me some clarity even if it wasnt the first time i heard it .......imagine that

Games can sometimes be surreal experiences, doesn't matter which one it is. They have the power to transport us to another time in our lives, whether better or worse.
I try to keep that in mind when I'm making these videos, something like: "You know, I bet somewhere out there, this is someone's favorite game EVER". Experiences are subjective.

@@mrandrossguy9871 Thank you so much for asking and yeah before something big (in a big way) happened in my life i decided to finish it (on og 360, looks wonderful) and my inner kid is happy , to use the game as an example i kinda felt like Shamrock when he is at Gracemeria during the Ending cutscene "feeling pretty good about this " i guess im starting to move on with baby steps
I got a 360 because of Ace Combat 6 and Project Sylpheed. 7 came out and got AC6 on Xbox one X I have way more hours in AC6 than AC7. THE GAME PLAY IS TITS and the CFA-44 is peak

Awesome rewiew 👍👍. I bought a 360 becouse of this exclusivity 😅. The cutscenes was cringe, but the radio story better. the graphics? awesome but I hated the gameplay loop. Their is basically to much enemy at some places and it's impossible to take them out without the "super attack" so all you had to do is attack a dozen target that are separated to charge the super then use it on the big group, and repeat the process. A big downgrade for me, it's eather impossible to progress or to easy. I'm glad it's gone because you don't have the choice.
0:27 since the ps3 was selling poorly on the early days and the development on it was burdened AND the XBOX 360 sold at least 10mil devices. Grasp the cause of exclusivity now by yourself
Pretty much plus since 360 was released earlier, its developer kits were available earlier and thus the development of next gen Ace Combat game could begin earlier on 360. And on top of that Microsoft was really pushing hard to get more Japanese developers support Xbox 360 back then when original Xbox was lacking that support from japs

I bought an xbox just for this game and I have no regrets, I will die forever dogfighting Pasternak. My favorite AC game after AC7 tbh. Also to me the 30fps still feel incredibly smooth, sure there is added input lag but even that wasn't too bad in my opinion, to be fair though I am used to playing games at low frame rates.

Yeah 30 FPS isn't a huge issue, the more and more I played the more enjoyable I found the core gameplay.

@@JarboeGaming I'll let you experience it for yourself but if there is one thing I want to say about it, it's that the DLC and VR missions (which sadly most people can't play) are what make it my favorite (also multiplayer but you have to be really into it to enjoy it). If those didn't exist then I'd prefer AC6. I don't think anything is beating the story telling of the PS2 games however.

Kids these days..... my first flight sim ran at like 3FPS on an Atari XEGS.
While the cinematic story was dumb, it's the corny kind of dumb and not AC7 dumb. The game looks gorgeous and I would assume they couldn't get it to run right on PS3 or Xbox sent them a nice big check.
The only real issue the game suffers from is the A-10... It's main gun doesn't sound like the Gau 8 and it doesn't do any more damage than every other gun. Plus the flying characteristics are so bad it like the plane is floating on the map.
Series X owners can get a digital copy for buying the AC7 bundle but I'd recommend just finding a used disc because it's far better.

🤔You mean only for the A-10 as to which a DLC Literally has the Thing drift sideways due to Over-exaggerated Inertia, Or the Christmas A-10 which aerodynamics have no affect on it 😅😂
Throughout your video and especially at 7:12 you show off DLC aircraft that are no longer available to buy, so I'm suspecting they came packaged with your Xenia. I own a physical copy of the game too, but would it be so bad to obtain a digital (pirate) copy of the game? It's not officially available anywhere, so i consider it vaporware. Is it bad to pirate vaporware games, but fine to pirate vaporware DLC? It's all vaporware. If Namco Bandai cared they would rerelease it.
The iDOLM@STER planes (anime/itasha) are optional to fly. Performance of all DLC planes change compared to the base planes, not just the anime ones. The iM@S A-10 has very unique flight characteristics. You do full time drifting. It's very fun to fly it with rocket launchers on ground attack missions. I like to let go of realism and just have fun sometimes. It's because of AC6 that I learned about THE iDOLM@STER, and have enjoyed watching every season.
What version of Xenia are you using? Basic, or AC6 specific? What version (date) is it? Where'd you get it?
So if you google "Ace Combat 6 Xenia build" you'll find it. It's a specific build just for the game.
Other versions have various issues.
The emulated version isn't perfect, with cutscenes most notably having audio cut outs, but otherwise it's very playable.

As in 7 you can’t Keep “High-g’ing” Until you stall but as a Freaking Cool down or only “high-g” for like 2 seconds then you have to Reapply that combo smh And it doesn’t even make your plane Turn tighter Or Increase the AOA yeah look that up ..

What's the xenia build you're using? Mine still doesn't really load textures and audio properly
If you do a search for "Xenia Ace Combat 6" you'll find a build specifically for the game.
It doesnt fix issues with audio in cutscenes and the music is a little wonky, but it fixes the black triangles and the other biggest issues.

Well the good news is that if you ever do, it's backwards compatible with Series X/S so even though the game isnt available digitally, you can atleast play it on modern day hardware instead of finding Xbox 360

When you 1st look at Ace6 You Immediately are Overwhelmed by its HD Visuals and Overall Makeover That and Super Photorealistic Visuals and High End Graphics Which To me was The Selling Point !
And the Fact that it was Exclusive to only the 360 Made me Envious And NEEDED to have an xbox360 FOR That game Plus FREAKING HALO3
So of course 360 was Getting more Hype than all other consoles at that time
I still don’t know what game that the PS3 was known for But the Wii was known for Zelda/Wii Sports/ Super Smash Brawl And Plenty of Other Immersive Physical games As Nunchucks for controllers !

Xbox 360 instead
But a lot of ace combat fans
Didn't like the storyline
Until they released ace combat assault horizon for the PlayStation 3
Ace combat was in competition with call of duty franchises and battlefield franchises
But most of the ace combat fans loved the original storyline like ace combat 4,5,0
My friend loved the ace combat 6 for Xbox 360 but I didn't like it either especially the MP and storyline
