The main thing that limits MS that cannot directly be compared to electronics is the issues of material strength and efficiency of construction. Electronics do not have to manage massive amounts of movement and the stresses that their own weight put on them as they do.

From a mechanical standpoint teducing the size is advantageous. Mid UC mobile suits got larger because the reactors got largers. Once they managed to decrease the size of the reactors while maintaining, and even improving the output, the MS got smaller. If the miniaturization trend continued mobile suits would have been eventually replaced by the Power Armors we saw in Sunrise's Starship Troopers anime.

    • @elfbait3774

I'm not saying the size change doesn't make sense. I was just saying that mobile suits and other military hardware shift in scale based on very different factors when compared to handheld electronic.
Tanks would be a better comparison.

@@arx3516 speaking of miniaturization, in UC, there's the Petit and Draken (WiTP). In SEED 1st episode, Kuzzey is seen inside what it seems to be a power suit, which has similar basic design to a power armor. AGE has Asemu and gang building a 8-9 ft tall mobile suit for a school competition. Tomino's original concept was a power armor, hence the term "mobile suit". It would be interesting to see a mobile suit growing in size due to powerplant or energy source and advancement in material science. Varieties in MS size should be a welcome one.

The size increase in late UC can be similar case to our mobile phones. As tech gets better, people want to cram more in the thing, so despite it being the same size as before again, the machines of super late uc are just far superior.

A more fun and proper size comparison. The RX-78 is just shorter than an F-18 Super Hornet is long; an F-22 and F-14 are 62ft. If you've been to an airshow you've seen something close in size to a Gundam. The animators play it fast and loose with the scale on screen imo. Gundam scale feels like Godzilla at times rather than sleek fighter jet. I think other shows like FMP, Macross and Patlabor scale the best visually but, their MS are supposed to be shorter than Gundam.

    Lore-wise in UC Colony.
They made the MS smaller around the time of F91 series bc the increasing size of MS make their development more costly for companies.
SNRI started this revolutionary trend of smaller MS with smaller costs but almost has the same production to rival Anaheim Electronics in the market.

try comparing 1/144 kits with anything else and scales are thrown out the window. tanks and cars will vary from 1/72 to 1/35,
planes would go from the rare 1/144 to the more common 1/60.
while naval ships would fly from the miniature 1/1700 to the gigantic 1/350
this makes a diorama builder's worst nightmare as standard scales are ignored for companies hyping their own franchises or products

few else has been made into gunpla.
even gundam ships scaled to 1/144 (used strictly as diorama) are only partial sections.
as for scenic vehicles, N scale (focused for the train hobbyist) stuff are the closest to 1/144 scale, and HO scale train models are about 1/72 versus Gundam's 1/60 perfect grade and 1/100 master grade.
the closest franchise rivals to gunpla being the Macross's unscaled kits, and their 1/72 kits from the late 90's.
Kotobukiya's Muv-Luv Alternative unscaled (est. 1/72 or 1/60) and 1/144 Tactical Surface Fighter kits.
Bandai's Evangelion unscaled kits (estimated scale around 1/200 scale)
      Zoids solid 1/72 models.

Amazing video and topic! I do wish you had mentioned some more outliers here, like the Wad (MRC-U11D Walking Dumpling) from turn a Gundam at just 7 meters. The wikia page on the AMX-109 Kapool (Turna a Gundma verison) actually has a gif showing a captured Wad, which is recolored red and renamed Armadillo, being catched in the arms of a Kapool as if it was a doll, and with the Turn A Gundam towering behind the Kapool.
Speaking of the Kapool, Turn A Gundam claims it is 14m tall, unlike the Capule from ZZ which is 16.5m tall in MS mode, and 9.9m in MA mode When the Kapool is in the later mode, it is the only MS that can kind of fit in the smaller Gallop's hatch from Turn a Gundam: it needs to retract its arms & head, while keeping the legs to the front.
And not leaving behind the ZZ/Turn A references, the AMX-102 Zssa (ZZ) or G-M2F Zssan (Turn A) has a head height of 15m in ZZ, the same number being given for its overall height in Turn A Gundam, essentially making it a miniaturized size MS decades before the concept was properly introduced (same goes for the Lotos on Unicorn).
Anyway, if you want to see the atrocious case of gunpla getting in the way of MS design, look no further than the Geymalk. If you google ANIMEDIA’S GUNDAM ZZ PART 2 TIDBITS, you will be taken to zeonic republic's site, where among many odd bits of info he points out that the Geymalk was originally meant to be a Queen Mantha/Psycho Gundam size (40m range) unit...BUT in order to make a model kit of it ,the request was put to turn it into 22m MS. The worst part? The model kit got cancelled, so the Geymalk was miniaturized in vain. As a weird detail: according to older sources, both the Geymalk and Queen Mantha were classified as "mass production MS", despite their size. This is one of the reasons that I consider that Haman's Neo Zeon was the peak of Zeon remnants movements, where their resources were the most plentiful, but the quality of their pilots left too much to be desired.
Didn't want to skip this part: the SNRI was the driving force behind the miniaturization of MS, as a way to reduce costs and improve mobility of MS, a topic that is central in the F90 mangas. This involve SNRI and Anaheim Electronics being constantly at odds with this idea, with the SNRI considering Anaheims first attempt at the concept, the RGM-109 Heavygun, a failure, little more than downsized Jegan, leading the SNRI to its now jab at the concept in the form of the F90 Gundam.
Moving on, before the events of F91, we had a couple of Oldsmobile Wars, where Mars bound Zeon remnants used their OYW era size MS (though completely modernized on the inside) against the EF's mix of older large MS (ex: Jegan) and handful of miniaturized MS, with the older models perform bad against the Oldsmobile units, while the miniaturized ones performed better.
A fellow fan of Vagan MS! I also like their unique take on MS, and specially like the 3rd era units like the Danazine and Reganner that completely broke the mold of the humanoid MS. There are a few questionable designs (like the magical girls MS and space lemon with arms MA), but I generally liked most of them. Also, love their ship designs!
On a similar note, despite the bad reputation of the film, G-Saviour actually had more pieces of media, which I generally consider much better than the film, including a novel version of the later which sought to better integrate it with the previous 2 universal centuries. The prequel radio dramas are short, but help provide a better world context, and the sequel PS2 game is a completely unrelated story (set a year later in UC 0224) that is more centered around the use of AI with MS, in other words, the Mobile Dolls of U.C., which I think not many people realize exist, even among those who watched the film, as the CAMS-13 MS Rai used by the main enemy pilot is actually a MS version of the mass produced CAMW-13 MW Rai, an autonomous mobile weapon (the AI computer can be replaced by a pilot cockpit). The PS2 includes their (IMHO much better looking) successor models, the CAMS-14 MS Raid and CAMW-14 MW Raid. But I digress.
These are all MS on the 17-19 meters height range, with the most notable case being the RGM-196 Freedom, which at some point we got lineart for its U.C. 0196 blue EF incarnation, which show us how the EF began going back to larger MS (Freedom is 17.01 meters tall) from their previous known mass production model, the RGM-122 Javelin (14.5m tall) introduced in U.C. 0133. Crossbone Dust (U.C. 0169) tries to fill the gap between Victory Gundam (UC 0153) and Gaia Gear (UC 0203) /G-Saviour (UC 0223) adding Mad Max like setting that is meant to explain the technological regression that took place during the later half to the 2nd U.C. It do should be noted that despite the regression in size, these MS do have beam shields, even the early EF Freedom, but the almost 3 decades old units used by Gaea have lost many of the parts that allowed them to sue them, forcing them to resort old & much worse equipment.
One more unexpected thing to add: the pitch video for G-Saviour, long considered lost, resurfaced on youtube a few years ago, with many people considering its CG better than the film, and with a different plot, involving a crime syndicate using CCMS-03 Bugus (in this version their rifles are beam weapons) to attack the New Manhattan colony. It's very short and there are some placeholder assets, but I almost wish they had gone with that kind of story instead. Similarly, the PS2 game story is more about a military unit hunting down an enemy CAF unit across the Earth sphere, which takes them to locations such as the Sydney crater, Kilimanjaro and the ruins of Angel Halo.
Lastly: can't believe you mentioned the incomplete Zeong, but not the (Perfect) Zeong with legs, which stands at 30.1m, making it the tallest MS designed during the OYW, half the size of the Big Zam.
Would love to talk more on the topic, but this comment is long enough as it is.

theres also quite a few lore reason for the sizes as well..
tho im not very knowledgeable in UC, from OG to zeta and ZZ, they basically just size up the engine to get more output, having more and more powerful beam weapons n stuff without having enough tech to miniaturize the them..
the SEED, most designs are derived from the main 5 suits and or stolen data of them, so its not too surprising..
for Wing, almost all suits were made from the data of Tallgeese.. the Leo and all the grunts were mass-produced copy of it, while the scienctist who designed Tallgeese later use the data and their own research to create the Gundams, you can pretty much call the Tallgeese the Grand-daddy of the Wing timeline
