BMW GS 6-axis IMU Explained - Inertial Measurement Unit - Gyroscope and Accelerometer sensor 6-Axes

  • BMW R 1250GS - Motorbike / Motorcycle 6-Axis IMU “Inertial Measurement Unit” explained. The six degrees of freedom or also called The six degrees of movement.
What does an IMU do ?
What does an IMU measure ?
In this episode we explore Roll, Pitch and Yaw, plus Thrust, Heave and Sway. I use the BMW R 1250GS as an example in this episode to help you understand the 3-axis that the Gyroscope measures - Roll, Pitch and Yaw, and the 3-axis the Accelerometer measures - forward-backward, up-down and right-left directions, which is sometimes called Thrust, Heave and Sway. However, a lot of what I share will apply to many different motorcycles from a wide range of brands. BMW S1000RR or the Ducati Panigale for example.
It’s important to understand that some manufactures only use a limited selection of the sensor systems they install on a motorbike to control its movement. Just because a manufacturer has a 6-axis IMU doesn’t mean they all provide the same level of performance or control… There is in fact a huge difference between them and the safety features they offer.
For some of you that have been following the channel since it started (Thank-you), you will recall I explained the basics of the IMU back in episode 12B, but due to the number of questions I still get asked I decided to make one video that explained things in a simpler way including some examples of how the software development engineers can use the data received from these sensors.
My hope is that you will have a better understanding of the 6-axis IMU from this video.
If you have any questions, just leave me a comment and I will reply…
    BUT:
If you would like a much more in-depth understanding, and if enough subscribers ask for it, I will make a longer video to help viewers understand more of the systems and the algorithms that the software designers use to help control our motorbikes and create the increasing number of ride modes and track modes.
Hopefully you enjoy the content I create, so by Subscribing you are letting me know, that you appreciate the effort and time I invest in creating these episodes, and it also helps to grow and develop the channel.
    Best Wishes, Carl

Thanks Carl. I followed that perfectly because of the way you explained it. I'm a programmer and an electronics technician but that doesn't mean I disrespect the effort you have provided for increasing our understanding, or BMW's effort for providing the technology.
I'm not sure if this was an example, but I was rolling down a steep, mossy and slippery driveway. The bike (R1250GS) started to slip as I had both brakes applied, but it seemed to self correct and I continued as if there was no problem. The only time I've ever dropped her (my bike) was at a complete standstill due to a fail on my part with the foot stand. Thankful for the crash bars and only a single scrape under one crash bar which you would have to be underneath the bike to see. Always put crash bars on these beauties guys!

Hi Michael, thank you for leaving a message it’s nice to hear the videos I make are useful. Technically there is a lot more to it as I’m sure you are well aware, but I try to keep it simple and easy to follow and cover the basics so riders have a better understanding of the systems. Finding a balance between full detailed explanations and still engaging viewers is something I battle with while making each video, this particular one was originally much longer and in more depth but I decided to reduce it this time.
Thank you for leaving a comment 🙏

The physics and technology in this sensor is amazing.
The only issue is BMW should place a huge warning notice on it saying "don't touch"! I once had to advise a keen diy expert who had unscrewed the sensor and placed it under the rear cover unsecured in order to fit his ezcan 😮

Hi Carl, I’m sure you’re already aware but wanted to put it out to fellow GS/GSA riders that yesterday 19/04/24 Hex have updated software and firmware on gs911 so you can now turn off both front and rear running lights effectively concerting your 22/23/24 indicators back to 2021, just good old fashioned orange turn signals . I believe you can also adjust large rear light brightness for tail and brake light .
Sleep happy fellow GS/GSA riders . And thanks Hex for sorting such a dangerous lighting system out !!!

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Peter, good morning and thank you for letting me know about the update, a couple of subscribers have already highlighted this to me . Overall, I think its great news, but we also need to think about the bigger picture. If we as owners add an accessory or product to our motorbikes it does not generally affect warranty. BUT if we make ANY changes to the OEM coding or software that is installed on our motorbikes, we immediately invalidate any warranty.
So, although the GS-911 device can add additional screens and make changes to the OEM coding that affect our indicator functions, owners need to be fully aware that any change will immediately invalidate our warranty.
I have had this confirmed by two separate dealerships.
Providing owners are aware of this and are prepared to accept the responsibility then that’s great. But each of us individually, need to make this decision.
Thank you for reaching out to me, much appreciated, and I think this whole topic perhaps needs its own video.
      kind regards Carl

Absolutely fascinating! Despite riding bikes for the last 45yrs I still get nervous about apply the brakes when wet….but it’s great to know that when I do someone has engineered the bike to initiate the most appropriate response!
One quick question though? Towards the end you mentioned that the algorithm used the performance of the tyres as part of the equation. This being the case, is it safe to assume therefore that the difference in tyre brands when considering traction/adhesion is relatively small or is it that the tyre performance characteristics don’t have a significant “priority weighting” in the overall algorithm?
    Keep up the great work!

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi great question, years ago when you and I started riding motorbikes, there was a lot a difference between tyre brands, some good and some horrible 😉, but now things are very different and they are all pretty good. The testing and breakaway point for tyres would have been set using standard tyres that bmw supplied on the bike from new plus a little extra margin so doubt any of us mere mortals would exceed the limits set during testing. Although I personally would not want to test that with full off-road tyres but I’m sure the testers did.
But then again bmw do state that when using Enduro Pro to only full off road tyres should be used, so I would imagine the abs setting is different in that mode.
      Hope that helps
      Kind regards Carl

Hi Peter, thank you for your feedback 🙏, all the manufacturers are doing well, but possibly BMW and Ducati are currently at the top of there game with regard to electronics and system control.
I would imagine the guys who take their bikes on track would say Ducati for system control.

At the back of my mind I’m thinking so much clever electronics, all likely to go wrong eventually, expensive to troubleshoot and replace, aware of diagnostic tool. Now I know why I’ve been advised never let a new bmw go out of warranty.
