  • BMW R 1300GS DSA Suspension - Evo Telelever & Variable Spring Rate Explained. Forged Wheels on a GS? & Adaptive Vehicle Height Control. BMW R1300GS vs R1250GS (R 1300GS Trophy, Triple Black, Option 719 Tramuntana)
    In this episode we are going to explore the benefits of DAS, EVO Telelever, Variable Spring Rate and Adaptive Vehicle Height Control in relation to suspension performance and how you can get the best from the new system on your R-1300GS.
    We are also going to look at some of the options you may like include when ordering your new motorbike and I will explain why I would choose the Forged Wheels for a new GS.
    We will continue with the comparison between the outgoing R1250GS Rallye (my own bike) with the new R1300GS Triple Black.
    The Press-office here in Germany have been great, and agreed to let me test and review a second GS for a 2-week period, which they later extended to 3 weeks. In this episode we look at how to make adjustments within the DSA system to improve suspension performance, and explain about the new EVO Telelever with the Adaptive Vehicle Height Control system.
    Part 3 will be available very soon and is 100% focused on testing and comparing the comfort levels between the R1250GS and this new R1300GS… The results are very interesting.
    If you have any questions, just leave me a comment and I will reply…
    Hopefully you enjoy the content I create, so by Subscribing you are letting me know, that you appreciate the effort and time I invest in creating these episodes, and it also helps to grow and develop the channel.

    Great explanation, as always! Wish my dealer had known about the multiple advantages of the EVHA. If he'd asked whether I wanted the self-levelling suspension capability I would have said yes - instead I said no to EVHA because I didn't need the lowering ability.

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Chris, yes it’s a shame it not clear to new owners, I think the main problem is that if they had explained it to new buyers they probably would have said =
      wait … what, I need to pay extra for a feature (self levelling) that was standard on the old 1250 !
      That’s probably why it’s not clear to everyone which is a shame and poor marketing.
      But the good news is you do have variable spring rate and DSA which are both brilliant
      Best wishes Carl

      On the 1250 we only get self levelling on the rear which is fine, but the 1300 is dynamically much better

    Thanks for your detailed and very useful video, I'd seen and read a number of comments from different people saying that the new bike seemed to be a bit firmer and lacking the loping "easy" ride feel that characterised the old bike. Evidently they had not tried the settings adjustments you highlighted. Like a few others I'm hanging fire to see what the GSA replacement turns out to be, and pretty happy with my 1250 anyway. I'll definitely be in a much better position to assess the 1300 though, off the back of this video, when I get around to test riding one .

    Hi Carl as I'm currently riding both my R1250GS Rallye and a R1300GS Trophy Enduro version back to back now for 9 months l found ur vid interesting. My 1300 has the taller Enduro package which suits my size and off ride riding too. With the higher bars suspension and the brilliant new lighter forged alloys this bikes a transformation both on and off road. I've fine tuned my suspension and also the throttle responsiveness of the 1300 in all modes again this works well especially for Enduro Pro mode a much softer throttle position helps you. Keep up the good work looking forward to ur next update. #caledonianbiker

      You’ll generally find the sales peoples’ skill set is about selling things rather than knowing much about them. The training they get goes through the basics but most are just trying to flog enough bikes to make their commission target. I’ve bought BMWs from 8 dealers around the midlands and southern UK and except for my current longer term relationship with my local dealer most purchases have been somewhere between indifferent and totally uninterested. I guess they still sell bucketloads so no need for customer service - but will it be like that forever?

      Note that these are not truly forged wheels... it is very misleading branding on BMW's part. They are technically hybrid- or cast-forged. Also, BMW states that they are not as off-road durable as the wire spoked wheels; they fall in between the normal cast and the spokes.

      Hi Alan, what you say about muscle memory is true, but the seats are not great on the new 1300, in episode 3 ( up next week) it’s all about comfort and my wife and I spend 8 hours going between the new and old… conclusion is it’s the seats that are the problem.
      I’ve tried the standard comfort seat (not great) but the tall comfort seat might be better due to the extra foam.
      Suggest to your friend to try one “Without” the height adjustment lever underneath the seat.

    Hi Carl, very informative. Two questions:
    1. One of the weaknesses of many electronic suspension systems is that the preload is set for a minimum weight that is typically around 80-85Kg for the rider. I’m a fair bit lighter than that and I get bounced around on many electronic suspension bikes, although the 1250 is one of the better bikes. You cannot manually set up static sag on electronic suspension as far as I am aware. Does the 1300GS address this? You’ve only mentioned adding weight via a pillion or heavier rider.
    2) The forged wheels are lighter than spoked wheels but are they lighter than the regular cast wheels? I’ve not been able to find a conclusive answer.
    The 1300 seems like quite a piece of engineering but with that has come more complexity so your video has made quite a few things clearer.

      Hi MH, thank you for your feedback 👍
      Yes Forged wheels are lighter than the alloy ones but by how much I don’t have an exact figure.
      No manual adjustment is possible on the 1300, it might be better to get a pair of correctly weighted springs if your very light. But keep the variable spring activation so you can still add +20 stiffness if required.
      It’s hard for manufacturers to pitch a bike in terms of spring weight for all rider weights.
      The 1250 21 onwards can be manually set to minimum, which is a nice plus.

    Well explained as usual Carl.im still struggling with its looks, I don’t doubt its a superior machine to our 1250s but for me its lost its muscle , the old GS & especially the GSA just ooze / command the road .

    Do your videos have adaptive height as well? Because they always seem to get to a higher level 😂.
    As always brilliant, Carl!
    I have ordered a 1300 last week and will take delivery in June. However, coming from a 1250GSA I found the 1300 to be a little bit on the small side and a bit low. I’m 1,87 but have relative long legs so I opted for the sports suspension option which, next to making the bike higher, should improve handling both on- and off-road according to BMW. That rules out the adaptive right hight option since they can’t be combined. Will it have the variable spring rate with the sport suspension?

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Michiel, I think you are correct and the sports suspension versions also have variable spring rate.
      Please come back and share what your bike is like. I have asked to review one with sports suspension but they have none within the press fleet. Shame.
      Have a great weekend 👍

    Thank you Carl for this precious info! My question: Would I see a noticeable difference in my riding experience on my GS1250 if I switched my factory aluminium wheels to the new forged wheels (lower unsprung weight) supplied on the GS 1300? Is it worth the money? Thanks, Marc, Quebec,Canada 🇨🇦🏍😉

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Marc, sadly we will never know because the wheels on the new 1300 do not fit on the 1250, for example the front wheel spindal has increased in size / diameter, so it will not fit on the early models.
      I hope to test a GS with them and sports suspension later in the season.
      Have a great weekend, Carl

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Simone, I’ve tried the 1250 with sports suspension and it’s great, more travel and better ride quality on the road. But I’ve not tried that option on the 1300 yet, I hope BMW will arrange one for review. But the official description is now it’s more Off-road focused.
      So I’m unsure!

      @@justthewayitis My wallet isn't empty, partly because my test ride was pretty short. It's a bit of a long story but the test ride I signed up for was delayed so they sent me out on an Enduro pack model, not the normal one and I didn't quite gel with it like I do with my current R1250RS.
      I was a bit surprised, but the 1300 engine didn't feel as smooth as my 1250, though my 1250 has 14k miles on it at this point.
      I'll definitely try another and maybe in a year I'll look for a very low mile used model. Thanks again for all the great content.

    Not sure about that 3rd benefit of height reduction as even without that option the bike still has the dual spring rate so surely would be same?

    • @justthewayitis
      @justthewayitis  หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi Frank, correct it still has variable spring rate if it’s got dynamic ESA and 7 ride modes, but AVHC brings the other benefits especially when riding off road. BMW technical office was only willing to disclose and share up to point… the system was developed by ZF.
      Also the spring rate control and AVHC are in fact two separate systems which are controlled independently. It’s a little sad that if we want auto self levelling which we had on the rear of the 1250, we now have to pay extra for it on the 1300.
