The U.S. coaches appear to have ignored one simple mathematical reality in constructing the relay lineup: the fact the gap between elite men and elite women in the breaststroke is the largest of any of the four strokes - roughly 7½ seconds on average at this meet. The gap between individual men’s 100 breast gold medalist Adam Peaty of Britain (57.37) and women’s winner Jacoby (1:04.95) at these Olympics was 7.58 seconds. By comparison, the gap between men’s 100 free champion Dressel (47.02) and women’s counterpart Emma McKeon of Australia (51.96) was only 4.96 seconds. Caeleb Dressel dove in and attempted to chase down seven female swimmers whose head starts ranged from about eight seconds to about 2½. Too much to ask of him. He still managed to track down 3 of the women.
@@Cutiemaan So they are saying that in between free male and female there is a 5s gap. So that means that if a woman was 5 seconds ahead of a man and they were both swimming freestyle, he could catch up to her. But, in this case, when Dresel jumped into the pool, the first swimmer was 8 seconds ahead oh him. And even though she was a woman ("slower" than him), it was impossible for him to catch up to her.
Not really. Jacoby had her goggles come off midway through her leg. They still came 5th and only lost by 3 seconds total. They would have been amongst the medals had that not of happened.
These were great. It's most fun when different teams use different male-female orders. Let's hope they don't all settle on F-M-M-F, but we'll see. In athletics, the universal M-F-F-M order has taken away some of the fun. Luckily, in swimming, it'll depend on the relative strengths of the team members in different strokes, so we might expect to maintain some variety.

The biggest margin that comes from using male or female is in breaststroke. That's why most teams will use a male breaststroker whenever possible. USA coaches made mistakes in this relay. But probably they didn't trust Michael Andrew or Andrew Wilson. Fortunately, they finally trust Michael later in men 4x100m medley relay final.
yeah it's just simple math, you absolutely have to have a guy doing breastroke at least and to not put Dressel on fly when he holds the world record by quite a bit? HUGE mistake by USA coaches. There was a reason China, Australia, the Netherlands, the Russian Olympic Committee and Israel chose men in the breaststroke leg to match up against Britain’s Peaty, arguably the most unbeatable swimmer in the world across 100 meters of his stroke. Only the U.S. went with a female, the 17-year-old Jacoby. Peaty out-split her by more than eight seconds.
Great performance by Anna Hopkin on last leg. Imagine knowing that you could lose it after the team gained a lead for you. She was being chased by Australian world womens'champion and Dresel yet she went like a bullet and never looked like being caught. She was a star!!

This race is confusing for both viewers and swimmers in the pool. As this is a mix of male and female, it is difficult to judge by mere look on the gap, esp male vs female. It needs also a calculation of time splits on each legs from which swimmer can estimate how much gap he or she has to maintain, because the next swimmers may vary between male or female. In the case of GB vs China, it happens to be easy to analyse or predict, as the last swimmers are women. Now imagine if the same situation happened between GB vs USA, where James Guy chased and passed Torrie Huske like he did to Zhang Yufei of China. In the last leg, Dressel would have eaten Anna Hopkin. Back to GB vs China, people will tend to think that Adam Peaty didn't do anything because the gap in breaststroke leg was still big. What most viewers don't know is Peaty reduced the gap by 56.78 - 58.11 = -1.33 secs. In backstroke, GB were behind by 58.80 - 52.56 = 6.24 secs. Therefore, when James Guy entered the pool, the total gap was 6.24 - 1.33 = 4.91 secs. This gap is enough for GB to handle in the next two legs. Rough calculation between James vs Zhang Yufei will obtain about 5 secs for GB's advantage, so the remaining gap would see GB ahead of China by 5 - 4.91 = 0.09 secs. This little advantage is enough for Anna Hopkin to finish her job as the anchor. In fact the gap between James vs Zhang Yufei is 50.00 - 55.48 = -5.48. So the total gap at the exchange to the last leg is 5.48 - 4.91 = 0.57 secs. This margin is comfortable for Anna Hopkin to finish the race, because on paper, she was better than Chinese anchor. And she did with 52.00, while the Chinese had 52.71. Overall, GB were ahead by 0.57 + 0.71 = 1.28 secs. In conclusion, each GB swimmers did their job very well as expected.

I loved watching this. The different disciplines within the event take away the ability to simply go M-F-F-M which would be standard if they were all swimming the same stroke. I was surprised to see so many teams with a female swimming the anchoring freestyle leg. Interestingly, the US was the only team to put a man in the anchor position. Lots of variables to consider and it was fascinating to watch.

It was so fascinating to watch especially with the order and the different tactics every team had
Yeah since everyone has different strengths in different strokes it keeps the order different which makes it interesting
The only thing that seems to be definitive is to have a man doing the breaststroke as the time difference between man and woman on that particular style is massive.
@@DakonBlackblade2 Yep USA messed up
Getting out ahead is more crucial.
@@FlameDevily not much point getting out ahead if you can't maintain it though.
honestly, ive done mixed relays in practice and I'm telling you:
this event is DEFINETLY just and ONLY for the swimmers cause this thing is SO fun
Phenominal swim by our team but i think as a nation we need to take a moment to appreciate those 2 underwaters from james guy!! simply unbelievable!! 💪💪🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
when the goggles popped off and the slipped start from the backstroke, its a nightmare
olmypic swimmers don't really need goggles.... they swim for hours everyday and they used to see underwater without goggles
These races are great, adds an extra element to the strategy, and are always fun to watch.
I’m not a fan of swimming but this was really cool to see. Really like the importance it places on effort as a “team” no matter what the gender is. Amazing. This is sport.
Beautiful to watch again and again! Very exciting! High time the world adds more mixed events in each sport!
Please continue using this format in the next game
Yeahh..but please remove israel from the starting list...say no to israel
team gb are outstanding. something to be proud of
7:23 thats was insane، the best comeback I ever seen
It may be contrary to what's politically correct, but that was a guy gaining on and passing 3 girls. Look at the difference between his m/s and theirs...
its a guy passing a girl so yeah
@@amichainachshoni9000 Yes, it is true, but I think he was late from the start of the 50m by more than 25 meters, but he was able to finally move forward because of his speed under the water and Even if it is women, it is a strong comeback I think ❤
@@Nightwolfjor that is true, it was an impressive feat
@@Doogry even if it was against men it still impressive the speed he has...
7:33 Britain won coz of this SHARK . Hes amazing
Theoretically, the best arrangement of this game is male-male-female-female. But Adam Peaty and James Guy were incredibly fast, they made this game dramatic, diversiform and wonderful. What a swim!
This was awesome, a great addition to the Olympics and the strategy was fascinating
Thank you.
Finally the video I have been looking for.
Our country should make a team with me, Dennis Rodman, my sister, and Katy Perry. It'd be perfect
You’re weird
Legendary!! You should totally do it!!

We need more mixed team/relay events like this, really amazing!
I love the different strategies in it
why?

Track would be insane! Pleeeeeease
This race was very entertaining, interesting, and exciting. More strategy seems to be involved, I'm all for seeing more of this
Bro watching Dressel trying to catch up so hard was absolutely hilarious
Well done Great Brilliant. They were so far away in the middle of the race. James Guy are crazy, he is flying in the water.
This is one of the most exciting races I’ve ever seen. Watched it live and i was blown away as to how well GB caught up. Adam Peaty is an absolute beast!
How is this exciting? It's completely obvious what will happen and the only thing that matters is who got the fastest men in the team
@@niri2506 Salty septic alert! 😂
Zhang Yufei looks likable, being a fantastic sprinter at this olympic.
Anna Hopkin is short (165cm) but did her job very well as the anchor for GBR.
wow i didn’t know 165cm was short
@@ayme5868 It is for a swimmer, it is 5ft 4 and lots of male swimmers are over 6ft tall as obviously it gives them an advantage straight away through being so tall and their arm spans are also bigger the taller they are, most women are over 5ft 8 who swim and Freya Anderson is 190cm which is 6ft 2 tall Katy Ledecky 183cm so 165cm is short when compared to other female swimmers.
They should do this more often! I love this
Fabulous races to watch! Planning and tactics become a huge part. It is the sum of all parts that count. Well done!
Love how the pic or order didn’t need to follow specific gender
Enjoyed this event so much!
This is great! Why did they wait till now to include it in the Olympics? They should have done it ages ago! Glad that finally did. Great stuff! CONGRATULATIONS team GB!
Cool! Men and women working together in a team! What a nice feeling it must be! 👍👍👍
Totally support these races! They're very riveting, more diverse, and more tactics and techniques being used. Definitely need more of these!
that was the most exciting race ive watched in quite a while. all the teams did amazing. ofc a big congratulations to australia.,china, and great britain for placing top 3
Need to see Zhang Yufei's full race ASAP!!
Esp in 200m butterfly, she was fantastic.
she was outstanding in this!! truly remarkable

Love these, so happy that the UK won it!
US coaches admitted that they made the mistake here. Although the US swimmers are at their PB here, they put Jacoby vs Peaty and that made the difference. Breastroke is obviously an advantage for men.
All the styles are an advantage for men, they're stronger in faster.
Lmafo, men smack woman no matter what the discipline. Stop making excuses
@@thehorsecockexpress1068 guess not in the grammatical discipline, hey? "Men smack woman"
Bigger chest = More resistance
@@pablovandres mmm yes, Einstein? There’s science behind that obvious reality that literally everyone is aware of.
I feel for the goggles slip. Something similar happened to me at a championship where the goggles flipped into my eyes with the glass pressing into my sockets. But to be honest, something like that doesn't really impact performance. If you swim 10s of kilometers every week, lane after lane, you don't need goggles.
That is why they all swim with them, because they are not necessary.
I swim with contact lenses in, inside goggles. I'd be blind as a bat without them.

Women : in tears
Men : * Viking Noises *
It's an inspiration to me. A team which looked good on paper had the horondous start n then leg 2 n 3 stamped the authority. I watch the video daily once in the morning n once before I go to sleep. This keeps me going.. Where there is a will there is a way.. Well done Team GB 👏👏👏👏
James guy of britain stole the show legit man🙌😍😍🙌🙌🙌🙌
i would cry if i lost my goggles at the olympics
There was a reason China, Australia, the Netherlands, the Russian Olympic Committee and Israel chose men in the breaststroke leg to match up against Britain’s Peaty, arguably the most unbeatable swimmer in the world across 100 meters of his stroke. Only the U.S. went with a female, the 17-year-old Jacoby. Peaty out-split her by more than eight seconds.
yeah huge mistake, you just can't give up that kind of time and expect to do anything
True.. Breastroke is where men and women have huge margin in race time...
What difference does it make? The total time is the same anyway, whichever way you split the times.
@@bartholomewlyons I think the OP is suggesting that a different swimmer might have faired better, although I can't see it having any effect on the outcome...
no it not, just let me explain in simple terms, lets say a men takes 52 seconds in 100 breastroke and a women takes a 1m, thats 8 seconds of advantage, now lets compare free a men takes 49seconds and a women takes 55 lets say, thats a 6seconds difference, so now you see its not the same. if the men had swim the breast they would have 2 seconds of more advantage. and that is huge.
@@bartholomewlyons
I loved watching all these mixed races in the Olympics this time
I really like these mixed races. They make it a lot more interesting and I think it pushes both female and male athletes to be better in things that they are lacking in. When I did dance competitions, they would often score boys higher, so when we saw boys competing, we would perform 110% to beat them, which helped us become better dancers in the long run.
this is wildly fascinating and so ripe for strategy and tactics. MOAR
I hope this stays in future programs. Very exciting.
That turn by James guy was a thing of absolute beauty.
I love watching these mixed events. More more more
I didn't know what to expect clicking on this video. I usually hate swimming but I found this pretty fun!
Come On, Team GB!🇬🇧
Actually this GB Team should Thank JAMES GUY who was swimming Butterfly, When he took over from Adam Peaty, he was behind 3 bodies on 50m, and swam so well on turn over running after Italy and China , body lenght now is the difference on last 50m!
Duh, most of the field had a woman on butterfly that's why he gained so much.
@@surreal7963 ok if you say so, but US Dressler on the last leg was swimming with a swarm of women but they finished 5th
@@hannahratier7428 because he was way further behind than Guy was and the diference between man and Woman on freestyle is smaller than any other stroke, duh.
Big advantage came from Adam Peaty as expected : 1.33 sec over Chinese's men breaststroker. It's a massive margin that China could not compensate. Yes, James Guy did good job with his split of 50.00 sec, because it's enough to take over.
Anna Hopkin performed excellent as their anchor with 52.00 sec over Chinese anchor who had 52.71
@@hannahratier7428 Adam Peaty had 56.78 in breaststroke, while Lydia Jacobi of USA had 1.05.09. From this leg we obtain a gap of 8.31 sec. That's huge to compensate for.
Dressel had 46.99 in free, while Anna Hopkin had 52.00. The gap in this leg is only 5.01.
From this two legs, USA were still behind in 8.31 - 5.01 = 3.30 sec.
Even if Dressel went crazy with 46.00 sec, it wouldn't have helped.
Pure mistake by USA coaches in deciding their best lineup. However, it was still hard to beat GBR with their excellent performance here.
love this. It is so fun and unpredictable

This is the best thing I’ve ever watched
A lot of people from USA blame the coaches in decision making for the right lineup.
A simple mathematic suggested that they should use the following :
1. Regan Smith
2. Michael Andrew
3. Caeleb Dressel
4. Abby Weitzel
And that would still only put them in 2nd
Simone manuel nt abbey weitzeil
@@kehindetitobi6882 no, it would've been Weitzel.
@@kehindetitobi6882 As far as I know, Manuel didn't qualify in US Trials. So, 2nd option had to be Olivia Smoliga.
They def would have been in the hunt for gold with that lineup depending on what the splits would ultimately be. Huge mistake by USA coaches and they are rightfully being blamed for this. It's just simple math and everyone except the coaches could see that.
wow it's really interesting to see the difference between the female and male
this is the most unpredictable and interesting race i have ever seen🙂
James Guy absolutely showed the insane capacity of male swimmers, absolutely mental
Had a swim like that in FINA world championships short course and it was hell, even with wave breakers I was struggling behind the waves from the guys, I was the female swimming fly and was behind when I started
7:19 guy's underwater was super OMG
this is amazing! mixed teams!
Australia really brought it home there, they weren't doing too well in the Backstroke, but when the Breastroke and Butterfly happened you could see them pull ahead. Then in the final 100 M stretch for Freestyle you see McKeown pulling ahead and loosing speed slowly whilst gaining on China. Well played by all teams!
Thoroughly enjoyed watching 👏! Congratulations to all the teams that made it to the final. 🎊🎉🎊🎉💐
These events are common in practice and smaller competitions and they're always great fun.

The woman who lost her googles from her eyes during the start has earned my respect 👍. She continued swimming irrespective of the hurdles that came along her way.
