Actually, from 21secs to under 21, it will take forever (figuratively), timings tends to get low exponentially, so it won't be a big difference like from 21 secs they will go to 19 or something, in 50m they can lower 21.9 to 21.5 or 21.45 types which in itself is a big big improvement, so timing in 50m from 1980s would have been in 21s only.
The fact that Anthony Ervin won the game 2 times after 16 years is just crazy! Remember that it is a super sprint distance, not an endurance game that might grow up when you're aging.
Also the fact that César Cielo WR and OR remains after 16 years too...never a WR or OR remained for too long...the OR will remain for sure at least until 20 years
Just going back to back on the 100 free already puts you in a legendary category. Doing it on boths 50 and 100 is insane. I think he is probably the GOAT sprinter.

This is so cool to watch. Kind of funny, I have Matt Biondi's autograph in my photo album from when I was swimming in Nationals in the Netherlands in 1988.
Jagr and Popov are still the fastest pure sprint swimmers of all time, IMHO. Put a tech suit on them, give them hydro caps and goggles, give them the backstop on the block, teach them to dolphin kick to the surface on the start and their speed would have been insane.

The longevity Olympic Champion, at least. Florent Manaudou did beat him in 2012, admittedly a single year after Anthony Ervin resumed his career. Otherwise, I think Manaudou just edges Ervin just given the fact he won silver in 2021 after a 2 year career pause (2016-2018), and still took Bronze in 2024, despite being almost 34.
