  • The United States broke the world record for the second time in as many days in the mixed 4x400m as Michael Cherry anchored the squad to a new benchmark of 3:09.34*, taking almost three seconds off the first-round performance and delivering a 12th world gold to their second-leg runner, Allyson Felix.

    • @caperider1160
      @caperider1160 4 ปีที่แล้ว +142

      @cyoungrun1 But.... isn't this a fair game for every participating team? Each team has two BMX(female) and two Nascar(men). Every participating members of the teams cover the same distances to finish a 1.6km distance.
      Its just a matter of tactical choice each team makes as to when to deploy the BMX or the Nascar.
      Besides, the Polish did better than some other teams that used the conventional tactics.

      It was a gamble which didn't pay off. The athletes male, weren't in peak condition so they put them up front. The women were easily the fastest of the women, but putting them last was a bad idea.
      At that level, every small detail matters.
      The 1st runner needs to be a specialist 400m as that person has to run the big ellipse.
      The 2nd one needs to be a fast bend runner for the 100 m curve.
      3rd one needs to be able to run over 400 m to give the 4th person good lead and smooth baton pass.
      The safe order is to put . . .m f f m.
      In a 4x100 m mixed relay, similar strategies are there but the order of the athletes won't matter.

      The only problem is if you want to win, the order should be male-female-female-male. As Poland showed here, the female anchor will get runned down even with a 30 meter lead. To learn about the differences in running between men and women you just have to see the records. But to see the all time superstar Allyson Felix, because she is indeed a superstar, start her run with about 2 meter advantage only to finish about 35 meters behind a unknown male is very instructive, very visual.

      @johnlironix2184 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Rafał Omelko is not that unknown, he was in the Polish team that broke the World Record at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham.
      Allyson Felix ran here really well, she had a split time of 50.4. Most men can't run that fast.
      So Allyson would beat any average dude. The same can be said about Justyna Święty (the Polish anchor) - she had a split time of 50.1.

      @Treptune tbh, I think it worked because it is still their national record. Its just that indivisually their first runner(male with males) and third runner(female with females) both just arent the best. I mean their times are still very respectable but just not good enoigh for a medal indivisually. I would argue the strategy was a success as it did improve the team's time. Simply, Poland were not going to get a better time woth any other combination. The reason being they managed to get a very quick inside lane in 2nd leg and easy takeovers from 3rd and 4th leg as they were alone and in the inside as opposed to some of the mess that Brazil, India had in those takeovers.

      @@NovaTheDark the guys who change their gender to compete with women and then dominate their sport will beg to differ. Apparently their is no advantage when it suits them.

    The Poles came up with a great idea - to get away from the crowd and to have a clear track so as to focus on the running. It would have given them an advantage, but not enough to clinch a medal.
    I bet this idea would be employed by many in the years to come.
    Thank you, Poland, for thinking 'out of the box' !!

      it actually is somewhat detrimental. running a race in the lead is significantly harder for most athletes. I promise you it wont start a trend lol.

      It’s just amazing to see how powerful those men are to be able to close such a large gap. Don’t think that method could ever work though. Men to start and finish
