There’s nothing wrong with being the opposition in Parliament. What is wrong is when you vote overwhelmingly to hold a Brexit referendum then when you don’t like the result try and reverse it. When on the rare occasion Parliament does ask the people directly to make a decision then you HAVE to abide by that decision. It’s nothing to do with being in opposition or not.

Part of the democratic principle is respecting the minority view, to some extent. Otherwise, you have majoritarialism , where a democratically elected leader like Putin or Erdogan climbs into power and shuts everyone else up. It's not black and white. You do get an "elective dictatorship" like in Russia and Turkey if the winning party makes all the rules without someone else trying to make things tricky for them.

Also, the collective votes by people voting for remain parties were more than those who voted leave. We do not have a system of proportional representation.

Just have a think about that statement for a minute. If they were technically a "leave" party then they would not have had to be dishonest in order to keep their "northern" seats. Unless your contention is that the north is overwhelmingly in favour of remain? That is a rather unique reading of labour's position.
Most in the party campaigned for remaining in the EU and prior to the ref their manifesto supported staying in the EU. It's true that their position and strategy were convoluted and at times incoherent, but I think it's important not to confuse poor leadership with the party position.
When I did 'O' level and 'A' level politics, the purpose of the opposition was defined as "to watch, warn, and criticise". That phrase was heavily highlighted as it was looked for by the examiner. It was Never taught that the purpose of the opposition was to blindly oppose everything and anything. So was I lied to on school on two seperate, recognised courses, or have our opposition benches stopped doing their jobs in order to undermine the government?
