  • Sangita Myska debates with this caller who says that she 'breathed a sigh of relief at Rishi Sunak's speech' and believes that Lee Anderson is 'speaking for Jewish people'.
Giving an address outside Downing Street on Friday evening, Mr Sunak said Britain had seen a "shocking increase in extremist disruption and criminality" in recent weeks and months.
Lee Anderson, the former deputy chairman of the Conservatives, has been suspended from the party after claiming that Sadiq Khan and London were controlled by Islamists.

Wow. I am Jewish too. If you think that you'll be safer moving to a settler state that will be perpetually in a state of war because of the way it has treated the people that lived in Palestine before the mandate and the Shoah then you seriously need to have a word with yourself. If you think that a country that is treating Gaza like the Warsaw Ghetto is the answer then you are asking the wrong question.

“Am I missing something?” Claudine from St Albans asks.
I’m afraid she is missing many things. Here are some points to guide:
    1. As a British, she has called the Israeli hostages OUR hostages.
    2. She has decided to start the clock at 7th October and ignored decades of occupation and oppression of the Palestinians by Israel.
    3. She did not mention (let alone expressed sympathy) for the 30,000 killed, 90,000 orphaned or maimed, and million displaced or starving in Gaza.
Waving Palestinians flags, joining democratic marches for Gazans, expressing sympathy with Palestinians and criticising Netanyahus’ regime is not anti-semantics and should not frighten fair minded Jews.

It's a shame that it is being used by the IDF, but lots of people use that symbol who aren't tied in any way to the conflict or support of Israel / IDF. That kind of thinking is what starts intolerance to begin with. You start saying people can't use symbols they've used for centuries because "look, a terrorist uses these symbols as well". I'd like to agree with the sentiment of the comments on this channel, but most are so tone-deaf or completely absent of any nuance (looks almost like radicalisation tbh). If you understand the conflict that's going on & you're on the right side, fine. Focus on that. There is genuine concern amongst many Jews because they are brought on stories of the holocaust and brought up to fear and hate Palestinians rather than live with them, partly because they wonder how they would react if they had been disposessed as the Palestinians had been. The two histories togerther engender a real sense of paranoia and a self perpetuating cycle of violence that we must get out of. He told me his grandmother always told him that the political Zionists who murdered their family are not the same as the Jewish people or faith. I know my grandmother was not as forgiving of the Germans, and was not impressed I had a German friend. My Syrian-Palestinian colleague also had a Jewish friend in Syria who was not a fan of Israel, his family had lived in Syria for generations but were murdered by ISIS once they occupied the area. The children at Chelsea Hospital School painted plates based on designed painted by kids at school in Gaza. The JLFI made a complaint and demanded their removal because they make "Jewish patients feel "vulnerable, harassed and victimised".
What horrific scenes were painted on the plates that they objected to? Amongst the dozens on the wall, one had a picture of a Palestinian flag on a mural depicting Jerusalem, implying that it would be "part of an independent Palestinian state" and one had a picture of a fishing boat, but had a description that implied the whole coastline was Palestinian - which apparently therefore denies the existence of Israel. A common theme that's developed during this war "you didn't say anything anti-Semitic, but I think you might have meant to".

I hate the misuse of the word "victimhood", no matter how slight or large the claims. She does deserve pity for being in that state of mind and there may or may not be reasons for her fears. The issue is purely one of a lack of education about solidarity and intersectionality and sadly, she and others, usually those in situations of relative privilege, have missed the memo on that. It doesn't fully invalidate what she says though, and while I think anger is understandable (not least at someone so arrogant that they think Lee Anderson is on their side), using the word "victimhood" to ridicule is not a sign of someone who's fully understanding of the struggles of marginalised people either.
