- Yoshi’s Island is a game that I hold very near and dear to my heart. The art style, great platforming, challenging level design, and nicely hidden collectables, culminates into one of my favorite games ever. And even though developmental information is hard to come by, as it is for many SNES titles, the vast amount of unused objects left in the game show us many scrapped ideas, modified enemies, and some very strange unused sprites.

If you're playing a Japanese copy on a us SNES, the cart might be thinking its a pirate copy, which is why it's erasing itself.
Earthbound does something similar.
They do, there's a small technique Nintendo made in the SNES as a region lock. Notice how the inside of the SNES slot has thin rectangular humps near the sides while the cartridges have holes to allow them to slide in. The Super Famicom cartridges are a bit more round but don't have the slots for the humps making them unusable for an SNES unless you were to work on removing said humps to make them usable.

I think I know why the developers put a star on Raphael the Raven.
Raphael the Raven's death animation is him turning into a constellation star in the sky. You see the star in the middle of the constellation. They probably put the star on him to make it visible when he died, but made sure it was invisible when he was alive by making it the same color as his body.

That is actually a good theory. But the star that appears on Raphael’s constellation is angled differently so it’s either the sprite for the constellation is a completely different sprite to Raphael or the star on Raphael is on a different layer and when the constellation appears it gets rotated

You can tell this was Miyamotos passion project. There is so much love and care put into this game that I haven’t seen since in any Mario game. The backgrounds are some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen in any game.

Could I just ask, what is everyone's problem with Yoshi's Island DS? I felt that there was nothing wrong with it, It is exactly the same style as the old Super Nintendo one.

It's not exactly the same. They added new stages and characters like Baby Wario and Baby Peach. It's not bad. It just wasn't the same experience I had with the original.
I loved Yoshi's Island DS
It kept the same basic formula, but added new gameplay elements. If it was exactly the same as the last one it would just be like New Super Mario Bros and just be too repetitive.
Did you really want the game to be no different from the last one? Either way, can we agree that Yoshi's Island DS is way better than the 3DS one?

I think that he should wait a bit. You know, just in case new stuff is found in their files.
Going to rewatch this while actual beta version gameplay is still fresh in my mind - just to see what stuff was noticed here and may or may not have been in that particular build.
it seems to me with the tree and mushroom they tried to implement stealth, and it didnt work so they got canned
this might be a bit of a stretch
but imagine this
a section where you have to sneak past enemies to get past (maybe like the sign guys in yoshi's story so you can't just jump over them?)
if they spot you, they smack you back to the beginning of the stage, but if you have the transformation and stand still, they don't notice you, so you can move past when they turn around
i dunno maybe i'm overthinking it, i can't imagine anything else they could be used for since mushrooms and trees don't particuarly have any interesting abilities (and the mushroom has a sprite where it's just a mushroom, which gave me the idea)

The Super FX chip could be defected. I had my game delete my save files. Tested the battery voltage it was just fine. It would boot but for some reason when you get to the spinning cylinder or the falling doors it would freeze the game.
Maybe you got a bootleg version?

Also, why do you explicitly mention Mario not being on Yoshi's back on the skiing sprite? They are 2 separate objects, so of course they don't occupy the same sprite.

well since you own the physical copy of the game, just download the rom and use it on the sd to snes or an emulator. since you own the game, it is legal

Remember playing this at a friend's house, along with the DKC trilogy, when I was young. His mother sadly passed away before my 11th birthday and the memories I had there and at another friend's house during my preteen years, were timeless! I grew up with the SNES at the first friend's house and then the N64 at the second friend's house. It was between 1993-2003 where I had my childhood at both friends' houses. The second one was during the Pokemon craze of 1998-2001 and I'll never forget the time I saw the first Pokemon movie in theaters! I remember almost getting lost and crying because I couldn't find the family I saw the movie with. Thankfully I found them. I'm so glad I grew up in the 90s!

You're not alone. My Yoshi's Island cartridge liked to delete my saves too. It happened rarely, but it was really frustrating when it did that after I had finally gotten 100% completion.
I remember playing Yoshi's Island on the SNES classic edition nonstop! Those were some really good times
As far as the problem goes, a bootlegged copy of yoshi's island for GBA that i have does a similar thing (deletes my save files)

It was interesting re-watching this having also watched streams of people playing an actual beta build from the gigaleak. It answers a few of the details here, such as the crawling baby Mario sprite. In the beta, Mario never went into a bubble when you got hit, but instead fell to the ground and crawled around until you pick him back up. Enemies would also pick him up and try to run away with him too. The crawling around glitches out sometimes though, so maybe the developers just found it too hard to debug this mechanic for all situations and went with the bubble instead because a floating bubble doesn't have to take the various terrain (or lack thereof) into account.
The racing mini-game map has also been shown to be a game with two carts going along the tracks, and Yoshi transformed into a helicopter using a hook to collect eggs from the bandit's cart and drop them into the other cart, which is being ridden by baby Mario.

I know that it's been a while since you've asked why the cartridge does this, but I remember encountering the exact same sort of problem when I was tilting my F-Zero cartridge once. This cartridge would always, always boot up and still does, but after a specific cartridge tilt that removed all options from the title screen, turned the screen black and white, froze the game and stopped the music entirely, it took me 3 to 4 different times to get the cartridge to boot.
I feel that there is an internal connection error occuring with your Super Famicom version of Yoshi's Island...I wouldn't be able to figure out which pin it is for you as I'm no sort of expert on computer architectures or wiring for electronic devices, but if you were to have a friend that's good with said situations open the cartridge and do a full checkup of all pin integrity on both chips and connector, it would most likely explain it. Sure, a permanently flashed chip can have data loss of it's own over time, but extremely few cartridges for any cartridge-accepting console have approached such a fate just yet.

I've had your same problem on many of my SNES games! Thing is, sometimes when you get a black screen, some of the pins are still going. The result of this is corrupt data trying to be read by the SNES, which can occasionally affect the cart's save data, corrupting the data there. When you finally get a clean boot up, the game checks the save data, notices its corrupt, and automatically deletes it.
This can happen a lot more often with complex, high memory games like Yoshi's Island, since there's a whole lot more that can go wrong when you boot it up. The older age of your save battery doesn't help things, unfortunately.
*Raphael the Raven's* chest star is seen after he is defeated and becomes part of the constellation background. Of course, it only shows on an outlined version of the sprite. My theory is that they were planning to use the main sprite (maybe with filters applied) for the background and, for what ever reason, it didn't work out. Maybe it took up a lot of system resources to apply filters and so they may have resorted to using a separate sprite entirely.

@@dustyk01 They most certainly can be. Cartridge bootlegging wasn't all that uncommon back in the day, and there were plenty of games that had anti-bootlegging measures. It wasn't uncommon at all for anti-bootlegging measures to behave exactly as described in the video, however some were more creative (like the Earthbound anti-bootlegging, which was just plain evil)

This is hands down my favorite Mario game ever. I got it at a flea market somewhere around 1999 and have stuck to that statement ever since. The control is amazingly fluent and spot on which enhance the game play to max. So there is no blaming the controller on this game. People use to complain about the baby and yeah.. it might be annoying. But when you master the game you rarely loose the baby long enough for him to cry. Anyway, great video. I really enjoyed some development on the backstory of one of my all time favorite games ever.

The star on Raphael was likely to assist in his death animation. After being defeated in the final version, Raphael spins and flies around before becoming another of the constellations in the background. The lone star that forms said constellation is in the exact same position. :3
Raphael: I've used something similar in small experiments to assist with collision detection.

The only reason I knew this game existed, is when my mom miss-purchased super Mario world. However, I was not disappointed.

Im actually glad to see you adding more enternatining jokes/skits in the video. No all of them were gold but it's a good start! In a very fact driven series, a joke or two can act as a nice break from all the info. Keep up the good work!

It's been released in the Nintendo eShop - just look up Snes games and you can find the cartoon version from the snes for a cheap $7 fee in the Nintendo store :)

This is a incredibly cheesy episode, I love it!
The save file deleting might be A: A contact failure in your SFC/SNES on one of the SuperFX chip pins (the extra ones left and right) or B: Some glitch in the circuitboard maybe SFX chip related.
The black screen problem is probably just usual old-game problems like dust.
The save gets corrupted when you turn the snes off and on again quickly when trying to fix the problem.

I had sometimes problems with the European Version of Yoshi's Island, but the problems were rare. One or two times the game crashed with a black screen (on the world map?) and one time the save files were deleted after booting the game. There were strange symbols for the savefiles and after starting one I was on the map on world one and all progress was lost.
Seen things like what you described happen to gameboy games. Try reflowing the solder on the chips on the board. This brought my Pokemon Snap to life that I bought on ebay.

At 1:16, it's probably the sram chip that hold the saves that is damaged, or a capacitor is failling (dried electrolyte)

Idk if you know this or not, but the snes classic is out and I included that game among others including starfox 2 and it provides that experience. Try getting it and see what happens.
Faulty SRAM chip? Got that on mine, removing the battery "fixes" it, but saves are gone. Replaced the SRAM with a new one, works like a treat.
