    I radomly bought this on DVD years ago not knowing anything about it other than Dan O'Bannon directed and it was an H.P. Lovecraft film. I was rather blown away by what a great adaptation of the book it was. All the actors do a pretty good job as well. I'm genuinely surprised at how relatively unheard of this one is.

      He did another. But Deus's been a little busy due to Covid pandemic and studying. He needs more time before he does another Lovecraft month, and that's alright, as I feel with his scheduling, it'd be fine if he kept it to one or two reviews to save on stress and give him more time to rest and work. Also he's kept us plenty entertained with NBC's Hannibal Retrospectives, as well as reviews of Sin Eater, Frailty, Jumanji, Mindscape, and Return to OZ.

    The whole "I have drawn down daemons from the star" speech is a direct steal from HPL's "From Beyond", there spoken by Crawford Tillinghast. Both a nice little nod to what is likely the earliest example of a truly cosmic background in Lovecraft's stories, and perhaps a way of bringing that tale into the Mythos through the back door, so to speak....

      I wouldn't either. The Cenobites, while a bit vauge, have rules about what they are and how they work. A lovecraftian horror is best characterized by a quote from Deusdecadons Oculus review. All you know about it is that its fucking evil and its gonna kill you!

  • @camerondodge2070
    @camerondodge2070 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I still prefer the first adaptation of "The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward", 1963's "The Haunted Palace". The reason it's called such is that it was marketed as an adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe's "The Haunted Palace" as the series of Roger Corman Poe films were still ongoing at the time. It's the first major movie to bring some of Lovecraft's creations to the silver screen, and besides, it's Vincent Price, how can you not like it?

So very much so that I had to track down the actual games soundtrack/score just to confirm they weren't the same piece of music..Did anyone else hear it and think the same as I did by chance? At the very least, it must be admitted that they sound remarkably similar.

    Thanks for the vid. Agree on most points. One of my biggest complaints is the weak handling of the visual tone, the equivalent of HPL's use of baroque phrasings for mood-setting. But I still like much of this film. (I keep thinking---and saying----that I think Lynch has the right feel for Lovecraft, but maybe not the subject matter? That "baby" thing in ERASERHEAD??----very much out of the realm of HPL's grotesques.

    Job 14: 14 If a man die, shall he alive again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
    Makes more sense in full NGL
    Also the before verse and after are very encouraging for being in a bad place that make you think of suicide. Because its from job. Where the devil is allowed to torment a man of God to see if he will turn against God for the harships.

  • @RSEFX
    @RSEFX 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dubbing is necessary in the case of shooting on locations with bad acoustics (hard surfaces and no place to hide sound dampening material, or no time to do so on a budget). Also in case where the sounds of crew/cameramen etc are audible, or lots of exterior noise (planes, cars etc) can't be eliminated....many many reasons.
    A shame but probably couldn't be helped that so much of film---including that flyover---takes place in sunny cloudless ie bland/non-atmospheric conditions. A stationary, darker establishing shot instead of that flyover would've been better tone-setting for the story, I think. But, this could've been entirely out of O'Bannon's control.
    Bland -looking lead actor.
    I think Lovecraft works best a little removed, a little distant in time---as in, say, a film like ANGEL HEART. Weird goings-on, practicing magic, people talking about spells and curses etc. come across a bit comically under florescent lights, flashing police cars, tv broadcasts and such. Seems to me---and may just be me---that the Lovecraft "patina" would work better with a bit more or a tea-stained air, and the subtraction of modern means of communication, modern day slang and manners of speech. Of course, it is not very practical for low budget films to come up with antique cars, decorations and such (plus the need to go through real life locations looking to eliminate and/or replace everything from light fixtures, furniture and window casings, but modern appliance cords, outlets and wall colors...to say nothing of signage and markings on stores and streets on outdoor locations.
    Ok enough "complaints".

      " In Media Res"A narrative work that opens in the midst of the plot, latin for "into the middle of things"

    The private dick finding the documents in the suitcase wasn't really all that shocking or convenient. An investigator like him should have basic knowledge of how and where people hide stuff. Basic tradecraft really. Suitcases or briefcases with false sides and the like are pretty common so if he just felt the padding, he would have found the stuff easily.

      it wasn't that he found them i had issue with it was just that he found them that so easily i personally was a bit convenient, after all he'd only seen the chest once very very briefly

    Hello. I have a movie I quite liked but it is older and considering the era offers production it falls prey to a number of fallacies.
    Periodically I look back and wonder if this movie was more one of the instances that you get what you put into it, which leads me questioning myself as to everything I liked is something I either
    Consciously or subconsciously put into it
    I am interested in your opinion or to see whether or not the movie inspires you to diagnose the weaknesses or the strengths of this movie.
    Last I heard it was available on Netflix if you're interested.
    Mr. Frost with Jeff Goldblum.
    Near as I figured this story doesn't do your thinking for you. You have to understand the nuances to get it.
    I am interested in your thoughts. Not being a gamer the other subjects don't River my attention like some of your other cinema pursuits. Hope you're inspired but I do understand that a confrontation with a manifestation of the devil may seem small when the Outsiders are your more normal dissertations.

    I thought trying to turn metals into gold and creating philosophers stones are alchemy, not magic. So, is alchemy a scientific form of magic?

    • @deusdeaconReviews

      its protoscience, so in a way its science before science was, the more practical stuff became science and the more esoteric stuff was magic.

    To be fair, the story TCoCDW itself is hardly a simple, sequential narrative itself either. It jumps backwards and forwards all over and through, so I gave the film a pass for relying on it this time.
    All in all, I kinda enjoyed this, except for the obvious moments the film struggles because of its choice to restage the story in a modern setting. A lot of the mysterious/blatantly criminal aspects of Ward's character and the horrific murders (lol, wild animals turning a guy into skeletal paste) are easier to write off in an older setting where communities and such are more "isolated" and methods of policing and medicine less thorough and such. It's harder to swallow when you know it's the 1980's/90s.

    Will you be doing a review of Cthulhu (2007)?
    The film is loosely based on the novella "The Shadow over Innsmouth" and features a gay protagonist. I guess that was a marketing thing to exploit the metaphor for the horrors faced by a gay person returning for a relative's funeral and having to face the horrors of small-town life.
    The film premiered June 14, 2007 at the Seattle International Film Festival and officially opened in select theatrical venues August 22, 2008.
