I just purchased a new 2021 Honda CRF300L and it is a superior bike in every way when compared to the TW200. The CRF300L has fuel injection, ABS, an amazing 6 speed gear box (the first 5 gears are great for the city and you really only need to use 6th for highway riding), and the dash has a fuel gauge, tachometer, clock and a host of other useful features.
Having said that, I sold the new CRF300L with a little over 250 miles on it to get a new TW200. The TW just fits me better at 5’9” 185 LBS.
I loved the Honda but mounting the bike was a pain in the ass for me. The kickstand on the CRF300L was too short, so the bike leaned over too far. When I used the cowboy mount to get on the bike by stepping on the left foot peg, and swinging my right leg over the seat, I felt like the bike stood a good chance of tipping over - especially if I had to do this on a sloped hill out on the trails. The CRF300L was a joy to ride once I was on it and the gearbox is by far the best I have ever used on any dual sport.
Itchyboots here on TH-cam is riding her Honda CRF300L Rally from South America to Alaska. But I’m close to 60 years old now and the TW is just an easier bike to mount for me, it’s easier to pick up if I drop it out on a trail, and I’m more confident roaming through the mountains on it. If I was 20 years younger I would have kept the CRF300L.
Buying the TW is one of my first concessions to getting older - but I do love the damn thing - especially the way it takes me wherever I want to go on the forest trails. The TW isn’t the best at anything yet it’s the best dual sport for me.

Hey John! The great thing about the bikes is, I could say that the TW is far superior to the Honda because of the simplicity of it and the seat height. Each of us has our say in what is better and why and I can see that what you pointed out makes perfect sense. Maybe the TW reminds me of my ol' Harley FatBoy. No electronics, no frills or gimmicks, just you and the bike. I can totally understand the features and benefits and not gonna lie, I enjoy them as well. I think the 300L would be an awesome dual sport if I wanted to do more highway to dirt riding. But, like you the TW is the best dual sport for me right now as well. Thanks for watching and for the insightful comment. Hopefully this reply made sense.

    • @johnpost
      @johnpost 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@MOBStreet83 I totally agree and understand what you are talking about in your reply. Yamaha has been making the TW since 1987 pretty much unchanged so there is just something magical about the appeal of the TW. The TW is the only bike I have ever purchased twice. I had one, sold it to buy something different and then realized how much I missed it. So naturally I had to get one again. This one I’ll have until I’m gone.

I actually went and looked at the Honda just out of curiosity. I am 6'2, and 230# so I could ride either comfortably. The one thing I wish the TW had is a rear disc brake. I had researched the TW's and liked the simplicity. After looking at a bunch of Tdubskid's videos, I was sold. I didn't and don't plan on any freeway riding, my use is around town and playing off road. All in all while the TW isn't quite as versatile as the Honda, I feel it was a better bike for my old school thinking. I bought a new one in May of 2020. I have no complaints other than the transmission seems to be not as smooth as most Japanese bikes.

Hey Bill! The Honda is a great bike, but for someone as short as me the TW made sense. It was a toss up for a long time since they were really about the exact same price. The clutch on the Honda feels better than the TW, that's for sure.

Great video, Matt. I have both bikes. The TW I bought new (can’t believe I was able to walk up on one) in October of ‘20 and the CRF I bought slightly used in January of ‘21 with less than 100 miles on it. A guy bought it for himself as a Christmas present and decided to trade it for a 450L. Anyway, I really like both bikes. I’m short, 5’6” with a 28” inseam, and the CRF, even with its very soft suspension, is a stretch for me to get my toes down. I put a Kouba link on the back and raised the front forks up a smidge, and it’s way better for me. I look forward to more videos on these bikes.

Thanks!! That is crazy that you didn't have any issue finding the TW. There is a huge waiting list at the local dealer for them here. I agree, both of these bikes are great and they both have something that the other doesn't. That is a great idea for the CRF suspension and everyone is right, they are a bit soft in the front. I was actually surprised! I am almost done with the street comparison video between the two and it should be posted soon. Thanks for watching!

I owned a 2001 TW200 several years ago. Bought it with 3000'ish kms on the dial and sold it six years later, with over 48,000. I've spoken to the buyer and he tells me that it is still running to this day with no major engine work.
In the time that I owned it, the most severe repair I had to make was replacing the pulse coil....otherwise it was bomb-proof.
After I sold it, I tried several other models; Sherpa...XT225...XT250...DR650....and two years ago I was looking at buying a CRF, but found another TW, so I bought that instead.
Happy with my decision, but if a CRF shows up at a decent price......who knows. After all, you can never have enough bikes!

Seriously the Honda is the better all round bike for the money. They being said I just like the TW for the same reason old timers prefer older vehicles. As far as higher tune that’s the reason the Honda is liquid cooled. It will last. Where I live no one buys a motorcycle for practicality. So TW it is.

I have a used TW and a used (carbureted) Yamaha WR250R, which is similar to the Honda. The WR is water cooled, more powerful, has electric and kick start, and is much lighter than the Honda at 234 pounds dry (about 250 pounds wet?). The bike can be lowered about 1 1/2 inch if necessary and a more comfortable seat is available. Still love the TW, but the WR is more capable.

I have a tw200 and a crf300L rally, and I prefer the tw200. Its just more fun.. the rally while way smoother, better trans, clutch effort is a joke etc. just feels less nimble and the suspension is so soft that when you hit anything significant, it just pogos. the tw200 even though it has less travel, is more comfortable to me with the tires aired down. I ride mine at 55 all the time btw and it handles it just fine. Im also 6' 290.

Water cooled engine does stay cooler than the TW. The only down side is the CRF250L feels heavy and clumsy on rocky single track trails. On dirt or pavement CRF is the best of the two. thanks so much for the side by side video! what you really can't tell when looking at these bikes one at a time online is the scale differences - the CRF250 (and 300) are HUGE bikes! the actual on paper dimensions aside, they look and feel monstrously big in real life.
the weight is a very good point as well. as a new rider, that 50lbs makes a BIG difference - esp if you're off road and picking it up several times a day lol!

Love my TW, but the CRF would be fun to blast around on. That the prices are so close makes me think that either Honda is selling for cost, or Yamaha is making some money on their old as dirt design. If I wanted a fuel injected dual sport I'd consider the XT250 first just because it's still air cooled so it should be a little simpler and lighter.

When the CRF first came out I couldn't believe they were selling it for that low. That's why the battle was between these two. The XT250 is great also. It weighs in at 291lbs.
