      I actually see a number of houses in Visalia with guava trees in their yard. Unfortunately, almost all of them use the traditional blue tarp when covering the tree during winter, which does way more damage than letting the tree face nature.

    • @throughjuanseyes
      @throughjuanseyes 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TropicalCentralValley Can you explain why covering guavas during winter with tarp isn't a good technique? Thank you.

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the tarp directly covering the canopy of the tree, the plastic will transfer the cold onto the foliage and branches.
      Additionally, the tarp blocks sunlight to the tree, preventing warmth.

    I've been looking for a pink/red flesh guava in the Bay Area, but it's been difficult. Thinking of a Ruby Supreme, but only just found someone with a Taiwanese or a Thai Ruby. Do you happen to know the differences in taste, amount of seeds and/or how hard the seeds are and whether fruit flies/worms are a problem? Saw a few of your videos and you sound very knowledgeable. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  ปีที่แล้ว

      Although I have not tried the Taiwanese or Thai red flesh varieties, personally I have been unable to tell the taste difference between my various red flesh varieties. All of mine tastes very similar. That said, I wouldn’t go with tastes as having priority, and instead, go with the variety that you can obtain.
      Between the various varieties, some of the differences are the size of the fruits, the amount of seeds and the level of crunchiness (for the white flesh varieties). Concerning the seeds, to me, the core of the fruit which has the seeds are the best part. In my case, I simply eat the seeds and all.
      I have not had any insect issues with my guava fruits (that are still on the trees), though, once fell to the ground, naturally, the insects, worms and microorganisms go to work on the fruit to recycle it back into my yard.

It gets about 7 hours of direct sunlight but hasn't produced any flowers as yet. I water it everyday and fertilize through the growing season. Could that be a problem? I bought a potted Taiwanese guava 6 months ago. I transplant into bigger pot recently because the leaves were starting to dry and curl with slight discoloration on tips. The leaves haven’t fallen yet. But most leaves are curled 180 degrees. It is a 4 feet tree. No fruit yet. But I don’t know why the leaves are dried and curled. Did I burn it with to much fertilizer or to little/too much water. ? Any input would help. i’m in CA too. When I put it outside a few months ago the leaves started to droop heavily, so I kept moving it inside and outside for a few hours.

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It actually may be a combination over fertilizing and too little water. Guava trees, when young want a lot of water. Curling of the leaves may indicate the tree trying to conserve water evaporation.
      Assuming your growing medium is super well draining, I’d water it every other day while placing the container tree underneath full shade outdoors.
      I’d stop fertilizing it until you see new leaves sprout out.
      My very first Taiwanese guava too died when it was in the ground. In my case, my ground wasn’t very well draining at the time, however, my other guava trees did fine. I find the Taiwanese variety to be a bit more picky on its soil.
      Currently, I have 2 Taiwanese guavas, one in the ground and the other in a container. Both are fruiting and doing awesome.

      Specific to guava trees, give them plenty of water during the first year. Try to keep the soil moist to the touch (not wet). For the long term health of the tree, use an organic fertilizer high in nitrogen, such as 8-4-4 for the first couple of years. When the tree starts to flower/fruit, lower the nitrogen fertilizer and use something like 2-8-8.

      Specific to pineapple guavas, they can be a challenge when it comes to fruiting in the Center Valley. Although the tree is a fast grower and produces flowers, fruiting is a different story. The tree needs to have a sizable trunk before the fruits will stay.

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guava trees aren’t too picky about their soil requirement. Depending on the guava species, many guava sometimes don’t do a whole lot during the first few years. For instance, all of my Ruby Supreme guavas grew slowly the first 2 years then just exploded in growth the following year then started fruiting heavily.
      As long as the guava is being fed and gets plenty of sun, I think you should just let it run its course.

      Guava trees in general grow at a medium rate and generally max out at 15 or so feet when matured. A 3-4 grafted guava tree will generally be about 10 feet tall and should be producing tons of fruits.
      On the extreme side, the Red Malaysian guavas grow at somewhat slower rates, but produces fruits quickly.

      @@TropicalCentralValley Thanks again. One last question. You have lots of fruit trees in the front yard. Do these trees have shallow roots may be ?!

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There exists a large drainage pipe (for collection of rain water from the roof) and sprinkler pipes in my front yard. I have starfruit, papaya, guava, longan trees along with banana plants and a massive sago palm planted directly above the pipes.
      Granted, these plants were young when planted, so, their root systems were flexible and will go around the pipes as the plants grow larger.
      I’ve never had any plumbing issues, as theses plants are small to medium sized plants. This would NOT work for larger trees with more invasive root systems such as moringa or mulberry trees.

      Most guava varieties at Mimosa are in 3-10 gallon containers. As I recall, their price was about $45 - $100. I’d get the smaller guava trees as they do grow quite quickly and being that they’re grafted, will also produce fruits in a year or two.

      @@TropicalCentralValley I just called they want 150 for it I asked if they had smaller trees and he said no...150 is to much for me...but I can grow them graft ithem and sell it on OfferUp to get my money back so I'll think about it.thank you for your time and replying back blessings

      Price must have gone up due to the pandemic. I know their inventory is likely not what it used to be. Anything above $100 is a bit much, particularly with guava trees as they are grafted easily, allowing the whole sellers to propagate them in masses.

    do guavas need to be manually pollinated?

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, all guavas are self pollinating.

      @@TropicalCentralValley Do you know what would cause the flowers to just bloom, wilt, then dry out and darken before falling off?

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s likely an environmental issue. Young guava trees need quite a bit of water. When flowering/fruiting, increase your phosphorus and potassium while eliminating your nitrogen. It could also be the colder than usual weather we’ve been getting. Make sure it gets plenty of direct sunlight.

      That sounds awful high. Is it synthetic by chance? If so, it may burn the roots.

      Unfortunately, I do not sell any of my tropical fruit trees. On occasion, Lowe’s and Home Depot carry them.

    Do you know any big guava growers you can recommend

    • @TropicalCentralValley
      @TropicalCentralValley  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Guava trees are relatively abundant and can be found just about everywhere. I don’t have any recommendations, as guava trees are fuss free.
